  • Densification behavior, microstructural evolution, and mechanical properties of hot-pressed specimens using $\beta$-SiC and $\alpha$-SiC powder with Al2O3 additive were studied. Beta-SiC powder was fully densified as 205$0^{\circ}C$, but $\alpha$-SiC powder was at 210$0^{\circ}C$. The maximum flexural strength and the fracture toughness of the specimen hot-pressed using $\beta$-SiC powder were 681 MPa and 6.7 MPa{{{{ SQRT {m } }}, and thosevalues of specimen hot-pressed using $\alpha$-SiC powder were 452 MPa and 4.7 MPa{{{{ SQRT {m } }}, respectively. The strength superiority of specimen hot-pressed using $\beta$-SiC powder was due to the finer grain size, and higher density. The higher toughness of specimen hot-pressed using $\beta$-SiC powder than $\alpha$-SiC powder than $\alpha$-SiC powder was due to the crack deflection mechanism arised from the difference of thermal expansion coefficient between $\alpha$ and $\beta$-SiC phases which were co-existed in the sintered body.

  • Al2O3/SiC hybrid-composite has been fabricated by the conventional powder process. The addition of $\alpha$-Al2O3 as seed particles in the transformation of ${\gamma}$-Al2O3 to $\alpha$-Al2O3 provided a homogeneity of the microstructure. The grain growth of Al2O3 are significantly surpressed by the addition of nano-size SiC particles. Dislocation were produced due to the difference of thermal expansion coefficient between Al2O3 and SiC and piled up on SiC particles in Al2O3 matrix, resulting in transgranular fracture. The high fracture strength of the composite was contributed to the grain refinement and the transgranular fracture mode. The addition of SiC platelets to Al2O3/SiC nano-composite decreased the fracture strength, but increased the fracture toughness. Coated SiC platelets with nitrides such as BN and Si3N4 enhanced fracture toughness much more than non-coated SiC platelets by enhancing crack deflection.

  • An analytical-numerical procedure has been presented in this paper to take into account the nonlinear effects of concrete cracking and time-dependent effects of creep and shrinkage in the concrete portion of the continuous composite beams under service load. The procedure is analytical at the element level and numerical at the structural level. The cracked span length beam element consisting of uncracked zone in middle and cracked zones near the ends has been proposed to reduce the computational effort. The progressive nature of cracking of concrete has been taken into account by division of the time into a number of time intervals. Closed form expressions for stiffness matrix, load vector, crack lengths and mid-span deflection of the beam element have been presented in order to reduce the computational effort and bookkeeping. The procedure has been validated by comparison with the experimental and analytical results reported elsewhere and with FEM. The procedure can be readily extended for the analysis of composite building frames where saving in computational effort would be very considerable.

  • In the present day scenario, concrete construction is rapidly becoming uneconomical and non sustainable practice, due to the scarcity of raw materials and environmental pollution caused by the manufacturing of cement. In this study an attempt has been made to propose recycled aggregates from demolition wastes as coarse aggregate in geopolymer concrete (GPC). Experimental investigations have been conducted to find optimum percentage of recycled aggregates (RA) in GPC by replacing 20%, 30%, 40%, 50% and 60% of coarse aggregates by RA to produce recycled aggregate geopolymer concrete (RGPC). From the study it has been found that the optimum replacement percentage of recycled aggregates was 40% based on mechanical properties and workability. In order to study and compare the flexural behaviour of RGPC and GPC four beams of size $175mm{\times}150mm{\times}1200mm$ were prepared and tested under two point loading. Test results were evaluated with respect to first crack load, ultimate load, load-deflection characteristics, ductility and energy absorption characteristics. Form the experimental study it can be concluded that the addition of recycled aggregate in GPC causes slight reduction in its strength and ductility. Since the percentage reduction in strength and behaviour of RGPC is meager compared to GPC it can be recommended as a sustainable and environment friendly construction material.

  • The microstructures and mechanical properties of Tetragonal Zirconia Polycrystals (TZP) sintered bodies, which made by pressureless and spark plasma sintering techniques, were investigated using XRD, SEM, and TEM techniques. In the spark plasma sintered samples, the TZP grains were equiaxed type including many sub-grain boundaries regardless of sintering conditions. The biaxial strength of TZP having an average of 80 nm grains in diameter was high in value with 1025 MPa, but fracture toughness showed a low value due to the absence of a fracture toughening mechanism such as transformation toughening. In the Pressureless Sintered (PLSed) samples, the grain size of TZP was strongly dependent on the sintering temperature; i.e., it gradually increased as the sintering temperature increased. The value of fracture toughness increased as the grain size increased by the stress-induced phase transformation and Borne crack deflection.

  • To investigate the effects of Mo addition on the microstructures and mechanical properties of Al_2O_3$ ceramics, two kinds of Mo particles with average sizes of 2-${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and 6-${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ were used as additives. It was shown that Mo particles inhibited the grain growth of Al_2O_3$, and the smaller Mo particles were more effective. In case of 2-${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ Mo dispersion, the bending strength and the fracture toughness were increased. Dispersion of 6-${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ MO did not increase the strength but improved the fracture toughness a little. The toughening mechanisms of Al_2O_3$-Mo composites are thought to be the crack deflection and microcracking mechanisms.

  • The objective of this study is to identify the quantitative relationships among the important physical factors associated with failure of steel members under strong seismic excitations through very low-cycle fatigue tests. Very low-cycle fatigue is meant to be structural fatigue causing cracks and rupture in about 5~30 cycle ranges. The angle specimen was subjected to repeated axial Ioad after undergoing inelastic buckling. The test results reveal that the energy absorption capacities vary heavily with the history of loading and the failure mode. The maximum values of residual local strain at the initiation of a visible crack due to the very low-cycle fatigue were of the order of 25~40%, regardless of loading patterns, deflection modes, and width-to-thickness ratios.

  • The effects of scrap content on the impact and fatigue properties were investigated in AC4A alloy. The impact absorbed energy of as-cast specimens were 3.61, 3.56, 3.47, and 3.08 Joules, respectively, when scrap contents of the specimens were 0, 20, 35, and 50%. And, the corresponding energy levels of the T6 heat-treated condition were 3.66, 3.48, 3.25, and 2.96 Joule. In the same way, the fatigue strength values of the as-cast specimens were 53.2, 52.0, 48.4, and 43.8MPa, respectively, and the corresponding fatigue strengths of the T6 heat-treatment specimens were 85.4, 75.7, 60.6, and 51.2 MPa. Impact absorbed energy and fatigue strength decreased as scrap content of the specimen increased. It is assumed that impact absorbed energy decreased owing to the presence of oxide films, which act as branches of 2nd cracks; fatigue strength also decreased with decreased deflection of the fatigue crack path as the scrap content of the specimens increased.

  • This paper presents the design, fabrication and performance of a reinforced concrete beam strengthened by GFRP box plate and its possibility for structural rehabilitations. The load capacity, ductility and failure mode of reinforced concrete structures strengthened by FRP box plate were investigated and compared with traditional FRP plate strengthening method. This is intended to assess the feasibility of using FRP box plate for repair and strengthening of damaged RC beams. A series of four-point bending tests were conducted on RC beams with or without strengthening FRP systems the influence of concrete cover thickness on the performance of overall stiffness of the structure. The parameters obtained by the experimental studies were the stiffness, strength, crack width and pattern, failure mode, respectively. The test yielded complete load-deflection curves from which the increase in load capacity and the failure mode was evaluated.

  • In this study, the flexural behaviors of full-scale prestressed concrete box girders are experimentally investigated. Four girders were fabricated using two types of concrete (compressive strengths: 50 MPa and 70 MPa) and tested under four-point bending until failure. The measured parameters included the deflection, the stress and strain in concrete and steel bars, and cracks in concrete. The measurement results were used to analyze the failure mode, load-bearing capacity, and deformability of each girder. A finite element model is established to simulate the flexural behaviors of the girders. The results show that the use of high-performance concrete and reasonable combination of prestressed tendons could improve the mechanical performance of the box girders, in terms of the crack resistance, load-carrying capacity, stress distribution, and ductility.
