A stabilization/solidification (S/S) process for lead (Pb) contaminated soils was evaluated using waste cow bone containing apatite like compounds. Soil samples obtained form firing range were treated with waste cow bone. The effectiveness of stabilization was evaluated based on the Korean Standard Leaching Test (KSLT) and soil pH. The leached concentration reduced with increased in dose of waste cow bone. Overall, the KSLT results showed that Pb concentration in soils are significantly affected by amount of waste cow bone. When soil amended with 20 % of waste cow bone, less than 0.1 mg/kg was leached, and soil pH was increased from 6.5 to 8.4. Same results were obtained when finer waste cow bone was applied. The reachable concentration of Pb in soil showed in inversely proportional to solid/liquid ratio. Aging periods indicate improving mix design was applied. Relatively high lead concentrations was observed at the first 1 days, however leaching profile are reduced significantly over time for all mix designs.
Osteopontin (OPN) is a secreted phosphorylated glycoprotein. It has an important role in multiple biological processes including cell survival, bone remodeling, inhibition of ectopic calcification, as well as, is thought to have potential immune modulation activities. In this work, we isolated and characterized a full-length open reading frame (ORF) of Korean native cow's OPN from Korean native cow's (Hanwoo) kidney, and successfully cloned firstly on Hanwoo's OPN. The sequencing results indicated that the isolated cDNA was 1190 bp in length containing a complete ORF of 837 bp. It encoded a precursor protein Hanwoo's OPN consisting of 278 amino acids with a signal peptide of 16 amino acids. Amino acid homology was found to be 99.3% as compared to the corresponding sequences of Holstein bone marrow OPN. Hanwoo's kidney OPN and Holstein bone marrow OPN are different only in two amino acid residues 42 and 56, amino acid residue 42 is Thr (T) ${\leftrightarrow}$ Ile (I), and amino acid residue 56 is Ala (A) ${\leftrightarrow}$ Thr (T) respectively. These results from the present work would be helpful to elucidate the biological function of Hanwoo's OPN and provided a foundation for further insight into role of Hanwoo's OPN.
The effects of water extracts of cow bone(WECB), and crab-shell powders(CSP) on the fermentation of kimchi were investigated. WECB has not a great effects on pH, titratable acidity, ratio of lactic acid bacteria against total microbe, and the number of Leuconostoc and Lactobacilli, but has on sour taste, and flavor and overall taste. The kimchi prepared by adding the 0.03% WECB and 1.5% CSP together showed more effective than the control and CSP-added kimchi in pH maintenance, buffer action ratio of lactic acid bacteria against total microbe. The sensory profiles such as fishy and garlic flavor, crispness and overall taste showed in the control and CSP-added kimchi were improved in the kimchi added no only, and CSP and WECB together.

Purpose: Recent mechatronics technology is the most appropriate high technology in agricultural applications to save repetitious labor. Method: Cow's body parameters were measured by several traditional measurers. Image processing technology was used to measure automatically their parameters to reduce labor and time. The parameters were measured form a small model cow which is easily measured, instead to a real cow. The image processing system designed and built for this project was composed of a PC, grabber card, and two cameras, which are located on the side and the top of the model cow. Tests of verification had measured 10 dairy cows. Result: Nine parameters of the model cow's body were measured, and the difference between the real data and the data by image processing was less than 16.7%. Based on the results of the research, the parameters of a real cow had measured of chest depth, withers height, Pelvic arch height, body length, slope body length, chest width, hip width, thurl width, and pin bone width were compared with image processing data. Conclusions: In the Demonstration test, Result had obtained similar data of cow model experiments, and the most of errors were shown less than 5% relatively good result.
The phenomenon of 'soil sickness' is one of the most important limiting factors for ginseng(Panax ginseng) production in Korea. The principal cause is known to be due to the root rots caused by Cylindrocarpon destructans and Fusarium solani. Attempts were made to control the root rots with non-polluting cultural methods or soil amendments. Among the nine soil amendments tested, crab shell, cow bone and pig feces were selected for further testing. Each of the three amendments increased the populations or various actinomycetes in the range of 10-25 times over that of non-amended soil, whereas the population of C. destructans was reduced to about $50-70\%$ as compared with the control. Five isolates of Streptomyces with clear zones on chitin-agar medium were selected and then tested for their antagonistic effects on C. destructans. When anyone of the five isolates of Streptomyces and C. destructans was grown together in a modified peptone broth, growth of the latter was highly inhibited. When three levels of crab shell, cow bone, or pig feces were used to amend potted soil infested with C. destruetans, the root rot ratings of ginseng seedlings were reduced to less than one half in all the treatments as compared to the control. In another similar experiment, crab shell and cow bone amendments resulted in almost complete control of the seedling root rots in soil infested with C. destructans or F. solani. In conclusion, biological control with soil amendments of ginseng root rots caused by C. destructans and F. solani was successful. Further basic studies should be pursued using soil amendments for better control. In addition, field experiments are needed to complement the soil amendment control measures in an integrated pest control program.

An abnormal Korean native cow of six years old with extra legs was observed macroscopically and radiographically. The results were summarized as follows; 1. External features included two normal forelimbs and hindlimbs, and two extra forelimbs which were underdeveloped. The extra forelimbs of different length attached laterally to the cranial regions of neck on right scapula. 2. The large extra forelimb had scapular meromelia. It consisted of underdeveloped humerus, antebrachial skeleton, several carpal bones, metacapal bone(MC3+4) and two digitis with each pairs of hoof and a rudimentary hoof of dewclaw. 3. The small extra forelimb had scapular and antebrachial meromelia. It consisted of underdeveloped metacarpal and carpal bone, severely deformed humerus, fused carpal bones, and two digitis with two hooves, and a rudimentary hoof of dewclaw. 4. The dermoid cyst was observed between the large and small extra forelimbs.

To get the nutritional data of hot water extract from imported kangaroo tails, research was done about contents of collagen, chondroitin sulfate, protein, fat, mineral ions, and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) in tails. Collagen content of sulfuric acid digested sample was way higher at bones than meats in both kangaroo tail and cow tail. Comparing kangaroo tail and cow tail, meat of kangaroo tail have 1.7 times higher collagen content than that of cow tail. Content of collagen in bone parts of kangaroo tail was also higher 1.2 times than that of cow tail. Meat sample of kangaroo tail (liquid extraction) have 1.3 times higher content of muco-polysaccharide than that of cow tail. In the born part, kangaroo tail was 2.4 times higher than cow tail in its content of muco-polysaccharide. The CLA content of the kangaroo tail showed the content that was higher than 0.9% of the cow tail for 4.9% and showed about 5.3 times high ratios. Especially in kangaroo tail, a band with high content of CLA was found between C18:1 and C18:2.

This study investigated the nutritional components of jokpyun. Jokpyuns made with cow feet and two kinds of jokpyun were added 30% of chicken and dry codfish to 70% of cow feet, respectively. There was no difference in moisture contents among three jokpyuns. Crude protein content was higher in jokpyun made with cow feet than in those added chicken and dry codfish. Contents of lipid and ash in jokpyuns added chicken and dry codfish were higher than those of jokpyun made with cow feet. The ratio of unsaturated fatty acid in jokpyun added dry codfish was the highest, but, that of linoleic acid was the highest in jokpyun added chicken than the others. Amino acid contents were higher in the order of glycine, proline, alanine, glutamic acid and composition of essential amino acid was similar to soupstock made with beef shank and leg bone. The contents of glycine and alanine in jokpyun added codfish and that of glutamic acid in jokpyun made with cow feet were the highest. Especially, among essential amino acids lysine was the highest in all jokpyuns. Methionine and valine were higher jokpyun added chicken and jokpyun made with cow feet than the others. Calcium and phosphorous were higher in jokpyun added chicken than in others. From these results, jokpyun, especially added chicken, was seemed to be more nutritious than other jokpyuns.
Transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs), also termed prion diseases, are a threat to food safety and to human and animal health. Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) in humans is caused by the consumption of meat contaminated with bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE, mad cow disease). The BSE epidemic in the United Kingdom was shown to be related with the extensive use of BSE-contaminated meat-and-bone meal (MBM) and bovine offal. Many countries worldwide use MBM, as well as meat from cows, for aquaculture feed. This raises concerns about the safety of farmed fish, a major protein source for humans. The present work reviews recent studies on fish prion protein and the transmissibility of mammalian prion agents to fish, providing insights into the future direction of fish prion research.

Background: The objective of this study was to evaluate xenograft degradation velocity when treated with 4-hexylresorcinol (4HR). Methods: The scapula of a cow was purchased from a local grocery, and discs (diameter 8 mm, thickness 1 mm) were prepared by trephine bur. Discs treated with 4HR were used as the experimental group. Untreated discs were used as the control. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), antibacterial test, endotoxin test, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were performed on the discs. In vivo degradation was evaluated by the rat calvarial defect model. Results: The XRD and FT-IR results demonstrated successful incorporation of 4HR into the bovine bone. The experimental disc showed antibacterial properties. The endotoxin test yielded results below the level of endotoxin contamination. In the SEM exam, the surface of the experimental group showed needle-shaped crystal and spreading of RAW264.7 cells. In the animal experiments, the amount of residual graft was significantly smaller in the experimental group compared to the control group (P = 0.003). Conclusions: In this study, 4HR was successfully incorporated into bovine bone, and 4HR-incorporated bovine bone had antibacterial properties. In vivo experiments demonstrated that 4HR-incorporated bovine bone showed more rapid degradation than untreated bovine bone.
