  • In this paper, we investigate array calibration algorithms to derive a further improved version for correcting antenna array errors and RF transceiver errors in CDMA smart antenna systems. The structure of a multi-channel RF transceiver with a digital calibration apparatus and its calibration techniques are presented, where we propose a new RF receiver calibration scheme to minimize interference of the calibration signal on the user signals. The calibration signal is injected into a multi-channel receiver through a calibration signal injector whose array response vector is controlled in order to have a low correlation with the antenna response vector of the receive signals. We suggest a model-based antenna array calibration to remove the antenna array errors including mutual coupling errors or to predict the element patterns from the array manifold measured at a small number of angles. Computer simulations and experiment results are shown to verify the calibration algorithms.

  • The paper provides a review of the analysis methods currently being used to perform seismic analysis of free standing high density spent fuel storage racks for PWR. On the basis of the analysis techniques obtained by KAERI from the design experience of Yonggwang unit 3&4 and Ulchin unit 3&4, the analysis procedure and modeling methods are discussed. The analysis of free standing fuel racks requires consideration of complex phenomena such as hydrodynamic coupling, impact through gap between fuel assembly and poison box and racks, frictional effect, rigid body sliding and tipping and etc. The present modeling of these factors is reviewed in comparison with the recommendation of regulatory group. Further improvement of analysis method and the current issues for the development are discussed.

  • This paper presents an application of fractional order controller for the control of multi input multi output twin rotor aerodynamic system. Dynamics of the considered system are highly nonlinear and there exists a significant cross-coupling between the horizontal and vertical axes (pitch & yaw). In this paper, a fractional order model of twin rotor aerodynamic system is identified using input output data from nonlinear system. Based upon identified fractional order model, a fractional order PID controller is designed to control the angular position of level bar of twin rotor aerodynamic system. The parameters of controller are tuned using Nelder-Mead optimization and compared with particle swarm optimization techniques. Simulation results on the nonlinear model show a significant improvement in the performance of fractional order PID controller as compared to a classical PID controller.

  • In recent years, various types of partial discharge (PD) methods such as capacitive, inductive, electromagnetic, and acoustic coupling techniques have been developed for diagnosing rotating machines. An electromagnetic (EM) probe, which is an inductively coupled type of sensor, is required for detecting corona and internal discharges during off-line tests. In this study, a new technique for enhancing the measurement sensitivities for corona and internal discharge based on an EM inductive position sensor is proposed. An EM probe that winds wires around horseshoe-shaped and cylindershaped ferrites as helices is designed and optimized for the implementation of off-line PD monitoring of the stator winding of a rotating machine. The measurement system based on this design is implemented, and it is verified from the results of the experiment performed in this study that the probe provides similar performance as existing commercial products.

  • The prevalence of osteoporosis has been increasing globally. Recently surgical indications for elderly patients with osteoporosis have been increasing. However, only few strategies are available for osteoporotic patients who need spinal fusion. Osteoporosis is a result of negative bone remodeling from enhanced function of the osteoclasts. Because bone formation is the result of coupling between osteoblasts and osteoclasts, anti-resorptive agents that induce osteoclast apoptosis may not be effective in spinal fusion surgery, necessitating new bone formation. Therefore, anabolic agents may be more suitable for osteoporotic patients who undergo spinal fusion surgery. The instrumentations and techniques with increased pullout strength may increase fusion rate through rigid fixation. Studies on new osteoinductive materials, methods to increase osteogenic cells, strengthened and biocompatible osteoconductive scaffolds are necessary to enable osteoporotic patients to undergo spinal fusion. When osteoporotic patients undergo spinal fusion, surgeons should consider appropriate osteoporosis medication, instrumentation and technique.

  • m-Phenylene-linked biscarbenes, bisnitrenes and carbenonitrenes can be formed photochemically from appropriate nitrogenous precursors. Generation of such reactive intermediates under matrix-isolation conditions allows for their characterization by spectroscopic techniques such as ESR, UV /vis and IR. The latter method is also useful in characterizing secondary products derived from these reactive intermediates. Computational chemistry methods complement experimental IR data, aiding, thus, in identification of such compounds. In addition electronic structure calculations help in developing qualitative and semi-quantitative models, which can be useful in predicting ground-state multiplicities. The parent systems of m-phenylene-linked carbenes and nitrenes have high-spin ground states, but a switching to lower multiplicity can be achieved by chemical substitution. The ground state and various low-lying excited states of m-phenylenecarbenonitrenes can be reasonably approximated by simple valence-bond depictions. Finally, m-phenylenecarbenonitrenes are photoreactive in the inert matrix isomerizing to cyclopropene derivatives.

  • Theoretical analysis on the transient torsional vibration was started from early 1960's for high power synchronous motor application. As for marine engineering, simulation and measuring techniques of transient torsional vibration have been steadily studied by manufacturer of flexible coupling and designer of four stroke marine diesel engine. In this paper, the simulation method of transient torsional vibration for four stroke marine diesel engine application using Newmark method is introduced.

  • The boiler feed pump located at a power plant has been experienced a severe vibration since the plant began to service in early 1980. The research is focused on the field measurement and implementation of simple signal processing techniques in order to provide realistic and effective solution which could be implemented into the plant. Based on the root cause analysis for the trouble-making pump system, the driving part gear in the fluid coupling system is identified as a potential source. The followed verification test confirms the analytical result. The test result shows that vibration reduction obtained after the gear replacement reaches up 15.8 dB, which is 1/6 times of the vibration level compared to that of the troble-making pump. The measured vibration level of the pump satisfies the manufacture criteria and guarantees the smoothed operation.

  • This paper is concerned with the development of useful engineering techniques to detect and anlayse nonlinearities in mechanical systems. The methods developed are based on the concepts of higher order spectra. The study of higher order statistics has been dominated by work on the bispectrum. The bispectrum can be viewed as a decomposition of the third moment(skewness) of a quadratic phase coupling(QPC) can be analyzed by bicoherence function. Finally, the application of these techiques to data from actual mechanical systems will be performed insecond report.

  • Transient hygrothermal stresses in an infinitely long hollow cylinder subjected to heating in hygroscopic environments at the surfaces are studied. The equations of hygrothermoelasticity based on the plane strain assumption are formulated by considering the coupling effects between heat and moisture. A closed form solution for the transient hygrothermal stresses is obtained by using decoupling techniques and the method of separation of variables. Numerical results including distributions of temperature and moisture concentration are presented. Effects of transient hygrothermal characteristics are clearly shown in both displacements and stress distributions in the wall of hollow cylinder.
