  • This paper describes the design of size-reduced ring hybrid couplers (RHC) using a common defected ground structure (CDGS). The proposed RHC consists of double-sided microstrip line and the CDGS patterns which are placed in the common ground plane of the double-sided microstrip line. The effects of DGS as a periodic structure are imposed on both microstrip lines, so the advantages of the existing DGS are doubled. The normal RHC is designed first and folded by the half reference plane with the CDGS realized on the common ground plane. So another trial for size-reduction is performed by folding the RHC and inserting CDGS besides to the conventional DGS. In order to show a design example, a 2GHz RHC is designed and miniaturized using CDGS. The size of the miniaturized RHS is around 50% of the normal one, while the performances are well preserved even after the size-reduction.

  • This study presents a 3-dimensional flow-structure interaction analysis of subsea risers in water flows. Two structural connectors (flat and circular couplers) were intentionally devised and numerically tested using ANSYS CFX to investigate how these couplers behave under the water flows. In the flow analysis, the water field was constructed with an inlet, outlet, and symmetric boundary conditions. As a result, the responses (drag coefficients and pressure fields) were obtained and the pressure fields were applied for the structural analysis. Finally, the structural responses (displacements and equivalent stresses) of the risers were measured to demonstrate the efficiency of the riser connectors.

  • A novel ultracompact polarization beam-splitter (PBS) combining two plasmonic multimode interference couplers (P-MMICs) and DFB guiding structure is implemented. The $2{\times}1$ and $1{\times}2$ P-MMICs are designed to collect the polarized powers of TE and TM modes reflected by or transmitted through an internal DFB structure. The simulation results show that the designed DFB-assisted PBS is very short (about $75{\mu}m$), and has a low insertion loss, a high extinction ratio, and a broad bandwidth of 20 nm.

  • A grating-assisted fiber coupler(GAFC), which consists of a thin-film waveguide with grating and circular optical fiber, is proposed and the optimized power coupling is evaluated by using a technique amenable to rigorous longitudinal modal transmission-line theory(L-MTLT). In addition, novel criteria to couple an optical signal incident through the grating waveguide to a single-mode optical fiber are proposed. The numerical result reveals that the optimized power coupling occurs at minimum-gap condition between rigorous modes rather than for the conventional phase-matching condition.

  • The partial discharge (PD) measurement is a very effective method to assess the winding insulation condition of high-voltage machines, since most of the insulation failure processes are directly or indirectly caused by PD. On-line PD measurements, which can detect insulation defects of winding in the early stages on rotating machines in operation, have been accepted as the most important technique. The epoxy mica capacitive coupler is currently and extensively used for on-line detection of PD pulses of high-voltage rotating machines. To evaluate the feasibility of developing a capacitive coupler that is easier to manufacture at a lower cost compared to epoxy mica couplers, a 100pF capacitive coupler made of ceramic material is designed, fabricated and tested for on-line PD measurements of 23 kV electrical machines. A series of electrical tests and accelerated aging tests are performed on the ceramic coupler to evaluate the performance requirements, long-term reliability and thermal stability for in field application. The test results show that the newly developed ceramic coupler provides equal and improved performance at a lower cost compared to epoxy mica couplers, and estimated voltage life is anticipated to surpass 100 years.

  • Directional couplers are widely used in RF and microwave applications to distribute or monitor signals. This paper presented a new structure of microstrip branch line directional coupler with coupled lines. The loose couplings of microstrip branch line directional couplers are impractical for the high characteristic impedance values required for the shunt branches. To overcome this limitation, the parallel coupled lines with the shorts were used for the high characteristic impedance. The results of the simulations and measurements were presented for the proposed branch line directional coupler. Measurement of the 10 dB branch line directional coupler shows that the return loss is higher than 30 dB over 10 % bandwidth and the isolation is 35 dB or better over 8 % bandwidth.

  • Microstrip directional couplers using microstrip lines do not have good directivity characteristics because the dielectric constant of the substrate is different from that of air. To solve this problem, a compensation capacitor is sometimes attached between the coupling lines to improve directivity. This paper proposes a directional coupler with high directivity using interdigital capacitors implemented with transmission lines instead of lumped capacitors. The directional coupler designed and fabricated using the proposed method showed a coupling factor of 20 dB and a directivity of higher than 30 dB at 2.14 GHz. This directional coupler can be used as two directional couplers because it has two coupling ports and two isolated ports.

  • Recently, prestressed concrete(PSC) bridge structures with many repetitive spans have been widely constructed using the segmental construction method in many countries. In these segmentally constructed PSC bridges, there exist many construction joints which is required coupling of tendons or overlapping of tendons to introduce continuous prestress through several spans of bridges. The purpose of this paper is to investigate in detail the complicated stress distributions around the tendon coupled joints in prestressed concrete girders. To this end, a comprehensive experimental program has been set up and a series of specimens have been tested to identify the effects of tendon coupling. The present study indicates that the longitudinal and transverse stress distributions of PSC girders with tendon couplers are quite different from those of PSC girders without tendon couplers. It is seen that the longitudinal compressive stresses introduced by prestressing are greatly reduced around coupled joints according to tendon coupling ratios. The large reduction of compressive stresses around the coupled joints may cause deleterious cracking problems in PSC girder bridges due to tensile stresses arising from live loads, shrinkage and temperature effects. The analysis results by finite element method correlate very well with test results observed complex strain distributions of tendon coupled members. It is expected that the results of this paper will provide a good basis for realistic design guideline around tendon coupled joints in PSC girder bridges.

  • A RF microstrip balun having low transmission loss for the balanced receiving dipole antenna is designed and fabricated using a three-section Wilkinson divider and two 3-dB quadrature couplers. It considers two types of the three-section Wilkinson dividers, the Cohn's optimum three-section structure and the miniaturized three-section structure, for wideband power splitting. Also, two 3-dB quadrature couplers for 180 degrees of phase difference adopt a twist-wire coaxial cable. The fabricated first balun having the Cohn's optimum three-section Wilkinson divider has 0.5 dB of transmission loss, $\pm$0.2 dB of amplitude imbalance, and 180$\pm$2.3 degrees of phase imbalance over 400 to 1000 MHz by measurement. The second one using the miniaturized three-section Wilkinson divider shows 1.0 dB of transmission loss, $\pm$0.7 dB of amplitude imbalance, and 180$\pm$8.8 degrees of phase imbalance over the same frequency band.

  • By defining a power distribution ratio (PDR) and coupling efficiency (CE) amenable to the rigorous analytical solutions of newly developed rigorous modal transmission-line theory (MTLT), we explicitly analyze the power coupling characteristics of TE modes propagating in GADCs. The numerical results reveal that the incident power is optimally coupled into the desired guiding channel if the powers of rigorous modes excited at the input boundary of grating-assisted coupler are equally partitioned.
