  • We report theoretical investigation on the polarization selective coupling characteristics of a side-polished fiber directional coupler with a thin metal interlayer. Based on normal mode theory the coupling properties of the device under various structural conditions are analyzed. It is shown that the coupling strength between TE modes weakens rapidly with increase or metal interlayer thickness, whereas that between TM modes becomes stronger. The design conditions of the polarization splitter using the coupler to achieve high extinction ratio and low insertion loss are presented.

  • A coupler is a microwave passive component used for power coupling or dividing. Regarding the trend of current telecommunication systems it is highly desirable for monolithic integration of passive components as such LTCC(Low temperature cofired ceramics) technology offers potential advantage in size, cost and performance. Utilizing LTCC technology a 2012 size type dual band coupler for DCS and EGSM band was fabricated. Its characteristics such as coupling, insertion loss, isolation and directivity was measured and compared with simulation results

  • Nowadays, the study on the ceramic components and modules used in telecommunication system is being performed. Coupler is a microwave passive component used for power coupling or dividing and directional coupler is designed to be possible optional dividing percentage. In our research, We developed 14dB and 19dB directional couplers of DCS band. The good characteristics, the target insertion loss and high isolation, of couplers is obtained by LTCC processing using a ceramic material.

  • It is challenging to achieve sufficient hearing gain in patients with mixed hearing loss. In chronic middle ear diseases, conventional passive reconstructive surgeries often result in suboptimal hearing gain and additional hearing aids may have limitations due to insufficient sound amplification, occlusion effect, acoustic feedback, and skin irritation. Middle ear implantation (MEI) using Vibrant Soundbridge (VSB) is another option for auditory rehabilitation in mixed hearing loss as well as sensorineural hearing loss. The floating mass transducer of VSB can be placed on various middle ear structures either directly or using different types of couplers in order to deliver vibratory mechanical energy to the cochlea. We report a patient who presented with bilateral mixed hearing loss due to chronic otitis media and had limitations using conventional hearing aids in the worse hearing ear. The patient was successfully treated with MEI using the Bell coupler together with middle ear surgery in a single step.

  • This paper presents the design of a dual band branch line hybrid coupler(BLHC) with different power division ratios at two bands. In the proposed design, transmission lines of the BLHC are transformed to $\pi$-type equivalent circuits which represent different impedances and $\lambda/4$ electrical length at two frequency bands. In order to verify the proposed method, a dual band coupler with different power division ratios is designed for 0.9 GHz and 2 GHz applications. The desired power division ratios are 1:1 and 1:3 at the two operating frequency bands. The measured results show excellent performance with an insertion loss of less than 0.33 dB, a return loss of less than -18.07 dB, and good isolation characteristics.

  • By using LHTL(Left-Handed Transmission Line) which is a form of a metamaterial and conventional RHTL (Right-Handed Transmission Line), we designed, fabricated and tested a broadband $90^{\circ}$ coupler which is a basic circuit for I-Q vector signal generation. Synthetic LHTL and RHTL were implemented with capacitors and inductors only, that the size is minimized. Also, by implementing a Wilkinson power divider which is required for the suggested circuit using a synthetic RHTL, the size of whole circuit is only $11mm{\times}12mm$. For the frequency range 0.8~1.25 GHz, the phase difference at the outputs maintained $90^{\circ}{\pm}5^{\circ}$ and thus, a broadband $90^{\circ}$ coupler could be made in a compact form. for the same frequency range, the insertion loss is less than 1.6 dB and return loss is more than 10.1 dB. To the best of our knowledge, this is the smallest and broadband $90^{\circ}$ coupler for the frequency range and if the circuit is made with MMIC(Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuit) technology, the size will be reduced much further.

  • This paper presents a power detector circuit which monitors the transmitting power for the application in CDMA cell phones. The proposed power detector are composed of coupler for coupling output power and detector fur monitoring output power. The designed coupler has low loss characteristic because it adopts the stripline structure which consists of two ground planes at both sides of signal plane. The design frequency is 824-849MHz which is the Tx band fur CDMA mobile terminal, and the coupling factor of the stripline coupler is -20dB. A schottky barrier diode is adopted for detector design because of its high speed operation with minimized loss. The required impedance matching is performed to improve the linearity and sensitivity of output voltage at relatively low detector input level where the nonlinear characteristic of diode exists. The package parasitics as well as intrinsic diode model are considered for simulation of the detector. The predicted performances agree well with the measured results.

  • The generally six-port phase correlator is comprised of a wilkinson power divider and three $90^{\circ}$ hybrid coupler, got bandwidth performance of less than 10%. in this paper, the six-port phase correlator using two section power divider has 33% bandwidth and external matching hybrid coupler has 15% bandwidth was designed with the center frequency of 2.5GHz. Analysis of the simulation result indicates that RF port and LO port got frequency bandwidth of 13%. Insert loss performance of fabricated six-port phase correlator is incremented, but bandwidth resembles simulation result. And phase tolerance within bandwidth is less than $90^{\circ}$.

  • The general six-port phase correlator is comprised of a Wilkinson power divider and three $90^{\circ}$ hybrid coupler, which has less than 10 % bandwidth. In this paper, the six-port phase correlator using two section power divider has 33 % bandwidth and external matching $90^{\circ}$ hybrid coupler with 15 % bandwidth was designed at the center frequency of 2.5 GHz. The simulation result by ADS2003A indicates that RF port and LO port of proposed six-port phase correlator got wide frequency bandwidth of 14 % for VSWR of 1.5. The fabricated six-port phase correlator has a bandwidth of 12 % similar to the simulation result. The maximum phase discrepancy and insertion loss are $6^{\circ}$ and 2.5 dB over a bandwidth, respectively.
