Vibration isolators and anti-vibration mounts are ideal, for example, in creating floating floors for gymnasiums, or performance spaces. However, it is well-known that there are great difficulties on isolating vibration transmission in structural steel components, especially steel floors. Besides, the selection of inertia blocks, which are usually used by engineers as an effective vibration control measure, is usually based on crude methods or the experience of the engineers. Thus, no simple method or indices have been available for assessing the effect of inertia blocks on vibration isolation or stability of vibratory systems. Thus, the aims of this research are to provide further background description using a FE model and present and implement a modal approach, that was validated experimentally, the latter assisting in providing improved understanding of the vibration transmission phenomenon in steel buildings excited by a velocity-source type of excitation. A better visualization of the mean-square velocity distribution in the frequency domain is presented using the concept of modal expansion. Finally, the variation of the mean-square velocity with frequency, whilst varying mass and/or stiffness of the coupled system, is presented.

The rapid development of road transport has increased the number of bridges that require widening. A critical issue in the construction of bridge widening is the influence of vibrations of the old bridge on the casting of wet joint concrete between the old and new bridges owing to the running traffic. Typically, the bridge is closed to traffic during the pouring of wet joint concrete, which negatively affects the existing transportation network. In this study, a newly developed microscopic traffic load modeling approach and the vehicle-bridge interaction theory are incorporated to develop a refined numerical framework for the analysis of random traffic-bridge coupled dynamics. This framework was used to investigate traffic-induced vibrations at the wet joint of a widened bridge. Based on an experimental study on the vibration resistance of wet joint concrete, traffic control strategies were proposed to ensure the construction performance of cast-in-site wet joint concrete under random traffic without interruption. The results show that the vibration displacement and frequency of the old bridge, estimated by the proposed framework, were comparable with those obtained from field measurements. Based on the target peak particle velocity and vibration amplitude of the wet joint concrete, it was found that traffic control measures, such as limiting vehicle gross weight and limiting traffic volume by closing an additional traffic lane, could ensure the construction performance of the wet joint concrete.
The research was conducted for the purpose of examining the dynamic characteristics of train wheel at the running state and preventing the vibrations of the high speed railway. The stress at the boundary surface of web and rim, .sigma./sub c/, was analyzed in consideration of the uniform In-plane compressive stress depending on the conditions of rolling and the rotation of train wheel. Then the equation of transverse vibration of the annular plate with the stepped thickness was analyzed by Rayleigh-Ritz's method.

In this paper, an active vibration control of a tensioned elastic axially moving string is investigated. The dynamics of the translating string ale described by a non-linear partial differential equation coupled with an ordinary differential equation. The time varying control in the form of the right boundary transverse motions is suggested to stabilize the transverse vibration of the translating continuum. A control law based on Lyapunov's second method is derived. Exponential stability of the translating string under boundary control is verified. The effectiveness of the proposed controller is shown through the simulations.
The purpose of this study is to propose a procedure for evaluating quantitatively the increase of the equivalent damping ratio of a structure with passive/active vibration control systems subjected to a stationary wind load. A Lyapunov function governing the response of a structure and its differential equation are formulated first. Then the state-space equation of the structure coupled with the secondary damping system is solved. The results are substituted into the differential equation of the Lyapunov function and its derivative. The equivalent damping ratios are obtained from the Lyapunov function of the combined system and its derivative, and are used to assess the control effect of various damping devices quantitatively. The accuracy of the proposed procedure is confirmed by applying it to a structure with nonlinear as well as linear passive/active control systems.

One of the challenging problems with bicycle simulators is to deal with the inherent unstable bicycle dynamics that is coupled with rider's motion. For the bicycle dynamics calculation and the real time simulation, it is necessary to identify the control inputs from the rider as well as the virtual environments. The six control forces of the Stewart platform-based motion system are used for estimation of the rider's action force, which is one of the important control inputs, but of which the direct measurement is impractical. For the effective estimation of the rider's action force, the dynamics model of the motion system is derived incorporated with both analytical and experimental methods and the sliding mode controller with perturbation estimation is developed.

Most of shear wall structures require openings in shear walls and thus shear walls are linked by floor slabs or coupling beams resulting in the coupled shear wall structures. When these structures are subjected to seismic excitations, excessive shear forces are induced in coupling beams. Accordingly, brittle failure of coupling beams may occur or shear walls may yield first. To avoid this problem, damping devices can be installed in coupling beams. It can increase the vibration control effect and improve the seismic resistance performance of the coupled shear wall structure by avoiding stress concentration and the brittle failure of coupling beams. Based on this background research, an LRB (lead rubber bearing) was introduced in the middle of the coupling beam in this study and the authors investigated the seismic response control effect and stress distribution of the proposed system. To this end, a modeling technique that can effectively predict the structural behavior of coupled shear wall structures has been proposed. With this proposed technique, time history analyses of the example coupled shear wall structure subjected to seismic excitation were performed and the vibration control effects of the seismic responses were investigated.
This paper presents the series multiple tuned mass dampers (STMDs) to suppress the resonant vibrations of railway bridges under the passage of high-speed trains (HSTs). A STMD device consisting of two spring-mass-damper units connected each other in series is installed on the bridge. In solution, bridge is modeled as a simply-supported Euler-Bernoulli beam with constant cross-section, and vehicle is simulated as a series of moving forces with constant speed. By the assumed mode method, the governing equations of motion of the beam-TMD device coupled system traversed by a moving train are obtained. The optimum values for the parameters of the STMD device are obtained for the criterion based on the minimization of the maximum dynamic displacement of the beam at its midspan. Single TMD and multiple TMDs in parallel are also considered for demonstration of the STMD device's performance. The results show that STMDs are effective in bridge vibration suppression and robust to parameters' change in the main system and the absorber itself.

The electromagnet in Maglev vehicles controls the voltage in its winding to maintain the air gap, a clearance between the electromagnet and guideway, within an allowable deviation, with strongly interacting with the flexible guideway. Thus, the vibration characteristics of guideway plays important role in dynamics of Maglev vehicles using electromagnet as an active suspension system. The effects of the guideway's vibrational characteristics on dynamics of the Maglev vehicle UTM-01 are analyzed. The coupled equations of motion of the vehicle/guideway with 3 DOFs are derived. Eigenvalues are calculated and frequency response analysis is also performed for a clear understanding of the dynamic characteristics due to guideway vibration characteristics. To verify the results, tests of the urban Mgalev vehicle UTM-02 are carried out. It is recommended that the natural frequency of the guideway be minimized and its damping ratio in the Maglev vehicle with a 5-states feedback control law as a levitation control law.
This paper deals with a uniform cantilever Euler-Bernoulli beam subjected to follower and transversal force at its free end as a model for a pipe conveying fluid under electromagnetic damper force. The electromagnetic damper is composed of a permanent-magnet DC motor, a ball screw and a nut. The main objective of the current work is to reduce the pipe vibration resulting from the fluid velocity and allow it to transform into electric energy. To pursue this goal, the stability and vibration of the beam model was studied using Ritz and Newmark methods. It was observed that increasing the fluid velocity results in a decrease in the motion of the free end of the pipe. The results of simulation showed that the designed semiactive electromagnetic damper controlled by on-off damping control strategy decreased the vibration amplitude of the pipe about 5.9% and regenerated energy nearly 1.9 (mJ/s). It was also revealed that the designed semi-active electromagnetic damper has better performance and more energy regeneration than the passive electromagnetic damper.
