In this study, the effect of planform curvature on the stability of coupled flow/structure vibration is examined in transonic and supersonic flow regions. The aeroelastic analysis for the frequency and time domain is performed to obtain the flutter solution. The doublet lattice method(DLM) in subsonic flow is used to calculate unsteady aerodynamics in the frequency domain. For all speed range, the time domain nonlinear unsteady transonic small disturbance code has been incorporated into the coupled-time integration aeroelastic analysis (CTIA). Two curved wings with experimental data have been considered in this paper MSC/NASTRAN is used for natural free vibration analyses of wing models. Predicted flutter dynamic pressures and frequencies are compared with experimental data in subsonic and transonic flow regions.
To investigate the effects of central buckles on the dynamic behavior and flutter stability of long-span suspension bridges, four different connection options between the main cable and the girder near the mid-span position of the Aizhai Bridge were studied. Based on the flutter derivatives obtained from wind tunnel tests, formulations of self-excited forces in the time domain were obtained using a nonlinear least square fitting method and a time-domain flutter analysis was realized. Subsequently, the influences of the central buckles on the critical flutter velocity, flutter frequency, and three-dimensional flutter states of the bridge were investigated. The results show that the central buckles can significantly increase the frequency of the longitudinal floating mode of the bridge and have greater influence on the frequencies of the asymmetric lateral bending mode and asymmetric torsion mode than on that of the symmetric ones. As such, the central buckles have small impact on the critical flutter velocity due to that the flutter mode of the Aizhai Bridge was essentially the symmetric torsion mode coupled with the symmetric vertical mode. However, the central buckles have certain impact on the flutter mode and the three-dimensional flutter states of the bridge. In addition, it is found that the phenomenon of complex beat vibrations (called intermittent flutter phenomenon) appeared in the flutter state of the bridge when the structural damping is 0 or very low.
In this study, computational demonstrations for the flutter suppression are presented for the 3-DOF airfoil system with oscillating flap. Advanced computational methods such as computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and computational structural dynamics (CSD) are used and a simultaneous coupling method has been developed to accurately conduct flutter analyses. In addition, optimal control theory is integrated into the CFD based flutter analysis method to construct the coupled aeroservoelastic analysis system for the airfoil with oscillating flap. For a well-defined typical section model, fundamental unsteady aerodynamics and flutter characteristics are investigated. Finally, to show the effectiveness of flutter control the physical aeroelastic responses are directly compared between the open loop and the closed loop systems.
Passive control of the flutter condition of suspension bridges using a combined vertical and torsional tuned mass damper (TMD) system is presented. The proposed TMD system has two degrees of freedom, which are tuned close to the frequencies corresponding to vertical and torsional symmetric modes of the bridge which get coupled during flutter. The bridge-TMD system is analyzed for finding critical wind speed for flutter using a finite element approach. Thomas Suspension Bridge is analyzed as an illustrative example. The effectiveness of the TMD system in increasing the critical flutter speed of the bridge is investigated through a parametric study. The results of the parametric study led to the optimization of some important parameters such as mass ratio, TMD damping ratio, tuning frequency, and number of TMD systems which provide maximum critical flutter wind speed of the suspension bridge.
The presence of traffic on a slender long-span bridge deck will modify the cross-section profile of the bridge, which may influence the flutter derivatives and in turn, the critical flutter wind velocity of the bridge. Studies on the influence of vehicles on the flutter derivatives and the critical flutter wind velocity of bridges are rather rare as compared to the investigations on the coupled buffeting vibration of the wind-vehicle-bridge system. A typical streamlined cross-section for long-span bridges is adopted for both experimental and analytical studies. The scaled bridge section model with vehicle models distributed on the bridge deck considering different traffic flow scenarios has been tested in the wind tunnel. The flutter derivatives of the modified bridge cross section have been identified using forced vibration method and the results suggest that the influence of vehicles on the flutter derivatives of the typical streamlined cross-section cannot be ignored. Based on the identified flutter derivatives, the influence of vehicles on the flutter stability of the bridge is investigated. The results show that the effect of vehicles on the flutter wind velocity is obvious.
In this study, transonic flutter response characteristics have been studied for the AGARD 445.6 wing considering various turbulent models and several angle of attacks. The developed fluid-structure coupled analysis system is applied for flutter computations combining computational structural dynamics(CSD), finite element method(FEM) and computational fluid dynamics(CFD) in the time domain. The flutter boundaries of AGARD 445.6 wing are verified using developed computational system. For the nonlinear unsteady aerodynamics in high transonic flow region, DES turbulent model using the structured grid system have been applied for the wing model. Characteristics of flutter responses have been investigated for various angle of attack conditions. Also, it is typically shown that the current computation approach can yield realistic and practical results for aircraft design and test engineers.
The flutter characteristics of long span bridges are discussed from the point of the unsteady pressure distribution on bridge deck surface during heaving/torsional vibration related to the aerodynamic derivatives. In particular, it is explained that the coupling terms, which consist of $A_1^*$ and $H_3^*$, play a substantial role on the coupled flutter, in comparison with the flutter characteristics of various structural sections. Also the effect of the torsional/heaving frequency ratio of bridge structures on the flutter instability is discussed from the point of the coupling effect between heaving and torsional vibrations.
The coupled time-integration method with a staggered algorithm based on computational structural dynamics (CSD), finite element method (FEM) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has been developed in order to demonstrate physical vibration phenomena due to dynamic aeroelastic excitations. Virtual flutter tests for the spanwise curved ing model have been effectively conducted using the present advanced computational method with high speed parallel processing technique. In addition, the present system can simultaneously give a recorded data file to generate virtual animation for the flutter safety test. The results for virtual flutter test are compared with the experimental data of wind tunnel test. It is shown from the results that the effect of spanwise curvature have a tendency to decrease the flutter dynamic pressure for the same flight condition.
The paper studies the effect of neighboring blade rows on flutter characteristics of cascading blades. For this purpose the computation program to calculate the unsteady blade loading based on the un-steady lifting surface theory for contra-rotating annular cascades was formulated and coded. Then a computation program to solve the coupled bending-torsion flutter equation for the contra-rotating annular cascades was also developed. Some results of the flutter analysis are presented. The presence of the neighboring blade row gives rise to significant change in the critical flutter condition when the main acoustic duct mode is of cut-on state.
A passive control using flaps will be an alternative solution for flutter stability and buffeting response of a long suspension bridge. This method not only enables a lightweight economic stiffening girder without an additional stiffness for aerodynamic stability but also avoid the problems from the malfunctions of control systems and energy supply system of an active control by winglets and flaps. A time domain approach for predicting the coupled flutter and buffeting response of bridge deck with flaps is investigated. First, the flutter derivatives of bridge deck and flaps are found by experiment. Next, the derivation of time domain model of self-excited forces and control forces of sectional model is reported by using the rational function approximation. Finally, the effectiveness of passive flap control is investigated by the numerical simulation. The results show that the passive control by using flaps can increase the flutter speed and decrease the buffeting response. The experiment results are matched with numerical ones.
