Sampling plan using yellow sticky traps for the major strawberry flying pests - western flower thrips Frankliniella occidentalis adults, cotton aphid Aphis gossypii alate and greenhouse whitefly Trialeurodes vaporarium adults was developed to determine the initial occurrence time. The analyzed trap data were obtained from three commercial strawberry greenhouses for the whole growing season (September to May of the following year) during 2013 to 2017 in Jeju province. Three flying pests showed the aggregated distribution patterns resulted from commonly used regression techniques - Taylor's power law and Iwao's patchiness regression. Taylor's power law was better description of mean-variance relationship of the western flower thrips and the cotton aphid than Iwao's patchiness regression, otherwise greenhouse whitefly was better described by Iwao's patchiness regression. There were highly significant correlated among mean density per trap, maximum density and proportion of traps with more than 10 individuals. To estimate 4.0 heads of mean density per trap, the minimum number of traps were required 13 traps for western flower thrips, 11 traps for cotton aphid and 10 traps for greenhouse whitefly. The sequential sampling plans at the fixed precision level 0.25 were developed using parameters of Taylor's power law for western flower thrips and cotton aphid, and of Iwao's patchiness regression for greenhouse whitefly.
Beauveria bassiana can be used as a biological insecticide to control a number of pests. It has been known as that B. bassiana TBI-1 have a insecticidal effect on the twospotted spider mite (Teranychus urticae) and the greenhouse whitefly (Trialeurodes vaporariorum) these days. The biological pest control agent, B. bassiana, showed somewhat insecticidal activities against the cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii, too. After treatment with biological insecticide, the mean of increasing rate of aphids was at around recorded at around 0.21 while at around 0.24 in non-treated TBI-1 biological insecticide condition during 1 week. Consequently, it was found that treatment of Beauveria bassiana reduced an increasing rate of aphid population. Also, we could visually observe dead aphids changed as a reddish mold due to this insecticidal fungus. B. bassiana TBI-1 can significantly reduce an increasing rate of aphid population, so effective biological control against the cotton aphid are possible.
Leaf-spray in vitro bioassays appraise new aphicidal formulations for managing deleterious plant-feeding aphids. The formulation may utilize alternative and integrated strategies. However, leaf spraying even under controlled conditions may affect aphid reproduction and mortality. This study examines leaf spray applications for optimum and reproducible aphicidal results using tobacco leaves overlaid on cotton fabric or water agar surfaces. Infestation of the undersides of tobacco leaves with nymphs of green peach aphids was used in the assays. Spray distance and volume were optimized using water-sensitive paper to ascertain the best surface coverage. Overlays of the leaves on water agar caused less mortality and greater reproduction than the use of cotton fabric. The relative humidity of the insect-rearing chambers changed with the watering regime for the insect - rearing chambers with cotton fabric; 60% relative humidity was optimal. Relative humidity was not affected by the concentration of agar in the water agar chambers. Applications of the chemical aphicidal standard, Sulfoxaflor, under the optimized conditions exhibited similar times for lethality although the rate was faster with leaves on the cotton fabric than on water agar. These studies establish reproducible and sensitive techniques for assessing the lethality and effects on reproduction of potential aphicidal products.
The aphid-eating gall-midge, Aphidoletes aphidimyza (Rondani), as predator of aphids was wildly used as one of the biological control agents for control of several kinds of aphids. Their some kinds of biological characteristics were examined. The developmental periods of A. aphidimyza from egg to adult with the green peach aphid as prey were 40 and 12 days at 15$^{\circ}C$ and 30$^{\circ}C$, respectively. Supplying the cotton aphid as prey, their developmental periods were shorter than with the green peach aphid. In case of the preservation of pupa in the cold condition, emergence rates were over 90% for 1 and 2 weeks at 5$^{\circ}C$ and l0$^{\circ}C$, respectively. Adult females of A. aphidimyza began mating and laying eggs at 2-3 days after emergence, and they laid about 200 eggs for lo days of average life span. Most of adults were emerged from pupa at 6 to 8 pm during a day, and they mainly acted in the early night.
Infestations of Aphis gossypii per leaf in greenhouse cultivation of cucumbers were investigated to develop binomial sampling plans. An empirical $P_T-m$ model, $ln(m)={\alpha}+{\beta}ln[-ln(1-P_T)]$, was used to evaluate relationship between the proportion of infested leaves with ${\leq}$ T aphids per leaf ($P_T$) and mean aphid density (m). Tally thresholds (T) were set to 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 aphids per leaf to find appropriate T in greenhouse cultivation of cucumbers. Increasing sample size had little effect on the precision of the binomial sampling plan. However, the precision increased with tally threshold. The binomial model with T = 5 provided appropriate predictions of the mean densities of A. gossypii in the greenhouse cultivation of cucumbers. Using a binomial model with T = 5 (sample size = 200), a wide range of densities (1.2 - 222.8 aphids per leaf) could be estimated with precision levels of 0.346 - 0.380 for $P_T$ values between 0.15 and 0.96. Binomial models were validated at T = 5 and 7 using 12 independent data sets. Both binomial models were robust and adequately described aphid densities; most of the independent sampling data fell within 95% confidence intervals around the prediction model.
Aphidius colemani and Orius laevigatus aree natural enemies of the control cotton aphid and western flower thrips, which are the major pests of cucumber plants. We evaluated the low toxicity of 47 fungicides against A. colemani and O. laevigatus, and we investigated the simultaneous effect of the natural enemies with fungicide of low toxicity on the pests. The toxicity of DBEDC, hexaconazole, pyraclostrobin, tribasic copper sulfate, triflumizole, chlorothalonil, flusilazole, folpet, carbendazim+diethofencarb, cymoxanil+fenamidone and trifloxystrobin to A. colemani mummies was more than 50% and to O. laevigatus was low toxic. Among the fungicides with low toxicity, azoxystrobin 20% WP was selected because it could be used simultaneously with A. colemani and O. laevigatus and as a fungicide to control powdery mildew and downy mildew. In 2011, the densities of western flower thrips and cotton aphid increased rapidly in early-May in Gongju and Cheonan, Chungnam Province. When azoxystrobin was used at an interval of 10 days in spring, A. colemani and O. laevigatus were released at an interval of 7 days at the early occurrence of the pests. The natural enemies decreased the densities of the pests; the maximum number of A. colemani mummies was 18 per lower leaf, and the maximum number of O. laevigatus was 0.5 per flower. Azoxystrobin did not influence the densities of A. colemani and O. laevigatus. The results show that the selected fungicides can be used with A. colemani and O. laevigatus for the intergrated pest management of cotton aphid and western flower thrips in cucumber polyvinyl house cultivation.
The cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover, is known as the most important vectant vector of citrus tristeza virus, cucumber mosaic virus, potato virus Y and potato leafroll virus. This study conducted to investigate the life history of cotton aphid at Suweon, Korea$(Lat.37^{\circ}16'N,\;Long\;126^{\circ}59'E)$. The aphids were reared in small cages placed over twig of hibiscus and on the leaves of cucumber. The results obtained were summarized as follows: 1. Overwintering eggs hatched from mid to late April, with a hatching rate averaging seventy-nine percent. 2. The early-born progeny have 22 generations and the late-born progeny have 6 generations on hibiscus and cucumber from April to October. 3. The fundatrigeniae leave tile the primary host in late May to early June and migrate to the secondary hosts. 4. From early to mid Oct., the gynoparae migrate from the secondary hosts to the primary host. 5. The average length of life was about 29 days and they produced an average of 70 nymphs each. 6. The maximum number of aphids produced per female was 117 in the spring. 7. The developmental period ranged from 6 to 16 days (average 8 days), the reproductive period from 12.2 to 24.6 days (average 19 days). 8. The average number of nymphs produced by a female per dys was about 3.7, with a maximum number of 17.

This study was carried out to develop a controlled-release insecticide formulation for the control of rose aphid (Macrosiphum ibarae) in rose and cotton aphid (Myzus persicae) in chrysanthemum (Dendranthema grandiflorum var. Meibung) in greenhouse. Imidacloprid[1-(6-chloro-3-pyridylmethyl)-N-nitroimidazolidin-2-ylideneamine] was chosen as a toxicant. Two synthetic polymers, low density polyethylene(LDPE) and ethylene vinyl acetate(EVA), were used as polymer matrices. The tested plastic sheet formulations were prepared by heat-aided extrusion procedures after mixing imidacloprid technical and the polymers of three different combinations, and physicochemical properties as well as efficacy of the formulations were investigated. The amounts of imidacloprid recovered and incorporated in the formulations were recorded over 90% and 80%, respectively. Release of the active ingredient from the formulations was remarkably affected by mixing rates of polymers. The active ingredient in the formulations was chemically unstable with over 10% degradation rates after 90 day storage at $50{\pm}2^{\circ}C$. The residual amounts of imidacloprid in the soil treated with the formulations were paralleled with the release pattern of the formulations. Efficacy of the formulations on rose and cotton aphid was maintained over 90% even 120days after treatment under greenhouse.
