An Improved Pipe Hoop Stress Formula

  • The ASME B3l.4〔1〕and B3l.8 〔2〕codes use the thin wall formula to predict hoop stress in a pipe. To account for the external pressure, the above codes simply subtract the external pressure from the internal pressure. The thin wall formula using this differential pressure does not give the same hoop stress as the thick wall formula. This paper proposes an improved equation to predict pipe hoop stress subjected to both internal and external pressure. Compared to the conventional thin wall formula, the improved formula has additional terms, which improve the agreement with the thick wall formula and account for external pressure. The improved formula is less conservative than the conventional thin wall formula, but slightly more conservative than the thick wall formula. The formula is simpler and easier to use than the thick wall formula and will save pipe material cost as well as installation cost compared to using the conventional thin wall formula. The savings will increase as the water depth increases.

  • Recently, solar control facade systems are highlighted due to its low cost and outstanding applicability for green remodeling. However, it has not been long time since the systems were introduced. Therefore, the application study of the solar control system also has been insufficient. In this study, simulated models were developed and three types of solar control systems(i.e., overhang, blind, and screen)are installed in the models. The efficiency of energy savings and investment payback period according to the application of solar control facade system were analyzed.

An Economic Analysis of Potential Cost Savings from the Use of Low Voltage DC (LVDC) Distribution Network

  • The proposed technical work attempts to compare the two key technologies of power distribution, i.e. direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC) in a fiscal manner. The DC versus AC debate has been around since the earliest days of electric power. Here, at least four types of a low voltage DC (LVDC) distribution are examined as an alternative to the existing medium voltage AC (MVAC) distribution with an economic assessment technique for a project investment. Besides, the sensitivity analysis will be incorporated in the overall economic analysis model to cover uncertainties of the input data. A detailed feasibility study indicates that many of the common benefits claimed for an LVDC distribution will continue to grow more profoundly as it is foreseen to arise with the increased integration of renewable energy sources and the proliferation of energy storage associated with the enhanced utilization of uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems.

Minimizing environmental impact from optimized sizing of reinforced concrete elements

  • The construction field must always explore sustainable ways of using its raw materials. Studying the environmental impact generated by reinforced concrete raw materials during their production and transportation can contribute to reducing this impact. This paper initially presents the carbon dioxide emissions from reinforced concrete raw materials, quantified per kilo of raw material and per cubic meter of concrete with different characteristic strengths, for southern Brazil. Subsequently, reinforced concrete elements were optimized to minimize their environmental impact and cost. It was observed that lower values of carbon dioxide emissions and cost savings are generated for less resistant concrete when the structural element is a beam, and that reductions in the cross section dimensions of the beams, sized based on the use of higher strength concrete, may not compensate for the increased environmental impact and costs. For the columns, the behavior differed, presenting lower values of carbon dioxide emissions and costs for higher concrete strengths. The proposed methodology, as well as the results obtained, can be used to support structural projects that have less impact on the environment.

  • Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) skill is becoming a technology that might deliver a response to manual glitches. The use of tags, receiver and wireless surfs to join with each other would mean that RFID in combination with the EPC would speech these pain opinions and offer many welfares in different sectors such as production, distribution, trade, logistics, and security. Potential benefits include increased visibility rising supply chain, enlarged proficiency and cost savings through improved data harmonization, better responsiveness to actual prominence change. Trendy the case of the textile or industrial applications, recent systems used by the industry to control the supply chain in addition strength discernibility are being studied, besides improvements in the overall perceptibility of assets are anticipated through labels, readers, drivers, POEs, etc. this model will be developed with new situations and a lively construction industry. It will be focused on Cost, Hardware compatibility, security and maintenance issues.

영농형 태양광 경제성 제고를 위한 정책 방안 (Policy Directions to Enhance Economic Feasibility of Agrivoltaics in Korea)

  • This study analyzes the economic feasibility of agrivoltaics in South Korea. The key findings are as follows. It was ascertained that an amendment to the Farmland Act, which currently has an 8-year permit period, is necessary to ensure the economic feasibility of agrivoltaic projects. Furthermore, economic feasibility improves when agrivoltaic projects are financed, as against cases without financing. Furthermore, the availability of low-interest loans through financial support programs significantly enhances economic feasibility. Scaling up projects leads to cost savings due to economies of scale, while community-based agrivoltaic initiatives generate higher revenue through the acquisition of additional Renewable Energy Certificates. These factors can help improve the economic feasibility of agrivoltaic projects. These incentives are emphasized as they can serve as a source of funding to foster community acceptance of agrivoltaic projects.

조직의 자원을 고려한 RFID 도입단계별 영향요인에 관한 실증연구 (An Empirical Study on the Factors Affecting RFID Adoption Stage with Organizational Resources)

  • RFID(Radio Frequency IDentification) is a wireless frequency of recognition technology that can be used to recognize, trace, and identify people, things, and animals using radio frequency(RF). RFID will bring about many changes in manufacturing and distributions, among other areas. In accordance with the increasing importance of RFID techniques, great advancement has been made in RFID studies. Initially, the RFID research started as a research literature or case study. Recently, empirical research has floated on the surface for announcement. But most of the existing researches on RFID adoption have been restricted to a dichotomous measure of 'adoption vs. non-adoption' or adoption intention. In short, RFID research is still at an initial stage, mainly focusing on the research of the RFID performance, integration, and its usage has been considered dismissive. The purpose of this study is to investigate which factors are important for the RFID adoption and implementation with organizational resources. In this study, the organizational resources are classified into either finance resources or IT knowledge resources. A research model and four hypotheses are set up to identify the relationships among these variables based on the investigations of such theories as technological innovations, adoption stage, and organizational resources. In order to conduct this study, a survey was carried out from September 27, 2008 until October 23, 2008. The questionnaire was completed by 143 managers and workers from physical distribution and manufacturing companies related to the RFID in South Korea. 37 out of 180 surveys, which turned out unfit for the study, were discarded and the remaining 143(adoption stage 89, implementation stage 54) were used for the empirical study. The statistics were analyzed using Excel 2003 and SPSS 12.0. The results of the analysis are as follows. First, the adoption stage shows that perceived benefits, standardization, perceived cost savings, environmental uncertainty, and pressures from rival firms have significant effects on the intent of the RFID adoption. Further, the implementation stage shows that perceived benefits, standardization, environmental uncertainty, pressures from rival firms, inter-organizational cooperation, and inter-organizational trust have significant effects on the extent of the RFID use. In contrast, inter-organizational cooperation and inter-organizational trust did not show much impact on the intent of RFID adoption while perceived cost savings did not significantly affect the extent of RFID use. Second, in the adoption stage, financial issues had adverse effect on both inter-organizational cooperation and the intent against the RFID adoption. IT knowledge resources also had a deterring effect on both perceived cost savings and the extent of the RFID adoption. Third, in the implementation stage, finance resources had a moderate effect on environmental uncertainty and extent of RFID use while IT knowledge resources had also a moderate effect on perceived cost savings and the extent of the RFID use. Limitations and future research issues can be summarized as follows. First, it is difficult to say that the sample is large enough to be representative of the population. Second, because the sample of this study was conducted among manufacturers only, it may be limited in analyzing fully the effect on the industry as a whole. Third, in consideration of the fact that the organizational resources in the RFID study require a great deal of researches, this research may deem insufficient to fulfill the purpose that it initially set out to achieve. Future studies using performance research are, therefore, needed to help better understand the organizational level of the RFID adoption and implementation.

Cost Analysis of Using a Closed-System Transfer Device (CSTD) for Antineoplastic Drug preparation in a Malaysian Government-Funded Hospital

  • Background: Apart from reducing occupational exposure to cytotoxic hazards, the PhaSeal(R) closed-system transfer device (CSTD) can extend the beyond-use dates (BUDs) of unfinished vials of antineoplastic drugs for up to 168 hours (seven days). In this study, the total material cost incurred by its use in a Malaysian government-funded hospital was calculated. Methods: A list of vial stability following initial needle punctures of 29 commonly-used antineoplastic drugs was compiled. The amount of the materials used, including drugs, infusion bottles, the PhaSeal(R) CSTD and other consumables, was recorded on a daily basis for three months in 2015. The total cost was calculated based on the actual acquisition costs, and was compared with that of a hypothetical scenario, whereby conventional syringe-needle sets were used for the same amounts of preparations. Results: The use of the PhaSeal(R) CSTD incurred a cost of MYR 383,634.52 (USD 92,072.28) in three months, representing an average of MYR 170.5 (USD 40.92) per preparation or an estimated annual cost of MYR 1,534,538.08 (USD 368,289.14). Compared with conventional syringe-needle approach, it is estimated to lead to an additional spending of MYR 148,627.68 (USD 35,670.64) yearly. Conclusion: Although there was a reduction of drug wastage achieved by extending BUDs of unfinished vials using the PhaSeal(R) CSTD, cost saving was not observed, likely attributable to the wide use of lower-priced generic drugs in Malaysia. Future studies should further evaluate the possibility of cost saving, especially in health settings where branded and high-cost antineoplastic drugs are more commonly used.

도시철도 노선의 비용구조 분석 (The Cost Structure of the Lines of Urban Railway)

  • 본 연구는 우리나라 공공기관이 운영하는 대도시의 도시철도 노선에 대하여 비용 비효율성의 정도를 도출하고, 이러한 비효율성의 발생 원인을 파악하고자 하였다. 이를 위하여 도시철도 노선을 노동, 동력, 유지보수의 세 가지 생산요소를 투입하여 열차-km의 산출물을 생산하는 형태로 상정하고, 확률적 비용변경 접근법을 이용한 초월대수 함수형태의 가변비용함수모형을 설정하였다. 확률적 비용변경 접근법을 적용한 도시철도 노선의 운영비용 비효율성 분석 결과, 노선 전체의 6년간 절감가능 비용은 약 6,672억원으로 추정되었으며, 비효율성이 높은 상위 5개 노선은 부산1호선, 대구1호선, 대전1호선, 광주1호선, 대구2호선으로 파악되었다. 비효율의 발생원인은 노동과 유지보수 요소에 기인하며, 본 연구의 결과를 활용하면, 도시철도 운영에 있어서의 인력 및 유지보수 비용 절감을 위한 대책의 우선순위와 구체적인 방안 모색에 있어 참고가 가능할 것이라 사료된다.

주문량에 따라 종속적인 신용거래 하에 퇴화성제품의 최적 가격 및 재고정책 (Optimal Pricing and Ordering Policies for an Exponential Deteriorating Product under Order-size-dependent Delay in Payments)

  • 신용거래(Trade Credit)는 제품 공급자가 중간유통자에게 제품 구입비용에 대하여 일정 기간 동안 지불 유예를 허용하는 거래 행위로 일반적으로 경쟁 기업과의 차별화 수단으로 허용되어 진다. 이와 같은 신용 거래는 고객의 거래량(주문량 크기) 증대를 목적으로 거래량의 크기에 따라 종속적으로 허용되는 것을 흔히 볼 수 있다. 또한 중간유통자 입장에서 보면 신용거래가 허용되면, 제품 구입비용에 대하여 일정 기간 동안의 지불 유예가 가능하여 재고투자비용의 절감 효과를 기대할 수 있고, 이와 같은 재고 투자비용의 절감은 최종 고객의 수요를 늘릴 수단으로 판매가격을 할인하는 요인이 될 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 공급자가 중간유통자의 거래량에 종속적으로 지불 유예 기간을 허용하는 상황 하에서 최종고객의 연간 수요가 중간유통자의 판매가격에 지수적으로 감소하는 가격탄력함수(a price elasticity function)의 경우를 고려하여 중간유통자 관점의 최적 판매가격과 주문량을 결정하는 모형을 분석하고자 한다. 문제 분석을 위하여 제품은 시간이 경과함에 따라 일정율로 퇴화하는 경우에 중간유통자의 재고 모형을 수립하고, 퇴화가 중간유통자의 재고 정책에 미치는 영향에 대해서 분석 해 보고자 한다.
