Design and Construction of Hybrid Bridge with Corrugated Steel Web by Incremental Launching Method (압출공법에 의한 복부 파형강판 복합교량의 설계 및 시공)

  • This paper presents how to design and construct the Il-sun bridge, the first PSC box girder bridge with Corrugated Steel Web(CSW) in Korea, including 3D analysis results according to construction steps. Also, the 3D analysis for the beams with CSW was performed for the purpose of verifying the role of the flange plate. As the results of this analysis, it is founded that the flange plate plays a role to resist the flexural strength in the nonlinear region. In the near future, we are plan to carry out the load test for these beams with CSW.

Shear resistance of corrugated web steel beams with circular web openings: Test and machine learning-based prediction

  • This paper presents an investigation on the shear resistance of corrugated web steel beams (CWBs) with a circular web opening. A total of five specimens with different diameters of web openings were designed and tested with vertical load applied on the top flange at mid-span. The ultimate strengths, failure modes, and load versus middle displacement curves were obtained from the tests. Following the tests, numerical models of the CWBs were developed and validated against the test results. The influence of the web plate thickness, steel grade, opening diameter, and location on the shear strength of the CWBs was extensively investigated. An XGBoost machine learning model for shear resistance prediction was trained based on 256 CWB samples. The XGBoost model with optimal hyperparameters showed excellent accuracy and exceeded the accuracy of the available design equations. The effects of geometric parameters and material properties on the shear resistance were evaluated using the SHAP method.

  • Major engineering requirements and technological developments in the steel construction industry are discussed to support a new innovative system, namely corrugated web beams, for future structural projections. These new-generation steel beams, fabricated as welded plate girders with corrugated webs, are designed to combine large spans with very low weight. In the present study, the flexural capacity of optimally designed trapezoidal and sinusoidal corrugated web beams was aimed at. For this purpose, the new metaheuristic methods, specifically hunting search and firefly algorithms, were used for the minimum weight design of both beams according to the rules of Eurocode EN 1193 15 and DASt-Ri 015. In addition, the strengthening effects of the corrugation geometry at the web posts on the load capacity of fabricated steel beams were tested in a reaction frame. The experimental tests displayed that the lateral capacity of trapezoidal web beams is more durable under flexural loads compared to sinusoidal web beams. These thin-walled beams were also simulated using a 3-D finite element model with plane strain to validate test results and describe the effectiveness of the ABAQUS software.

Sound Insulation Performance of the Panel Structures in High Speed Train: Transmission Loss of the Corrugated and Extruded Panels (고속철도 차음구조의 차음성능: 주름 및 압출재의 투과손실)

  • Sound transmission characteristics are investigated on the corrugated steel and aluminium extruded panels used for railway vehicles. Sewell-Sharp-Cremer(SSC) model, equivalent orthotropic plate model and equivalent mass law are applied to predict the sound transmission loss. The predicted values of the sound transmission loss are compared with the measured values. The reliability and the limitation of the prediction models are investigated. For the corrugated panels and honeycomb panels, the coincidence and local resonance severely deteriorate the sound insulation performance around the corresponding frequency bands. The result of the study shows that the equivalent orthotropic plate model and the SSC model can be used as good prediction models, if the coincidence frequency or local resonance frequency is correctly applied.

Optimum Structural Design of Sinusoidal Corrugated Web Beam Using Real-valued Genetic Algorithm (실변수 유전자 알고리즘을 이용한 사인형 주름 웨브 보의 최적구조설계)

  • The underlying advantages of using thin-walled corrugatedwebs instead of plate girders with stiffeners are the elimination of instability problems associated with buckling of the thin-walled flat plate, and elimination of the need for transverse stiffeners, which alsoresults in economic advantages. This paper focuses on two aspects related to the structural design technique forsinusoidal corrugated web steel beams, and the optimum design of the beams using real-value genetic algorithms. The structural design process and design variables used in this optimization werecomposed with EN 1993-1-5, DASt-R015 standard and Pasternak et al. (2004), and the valid design capacity of shear buckling of the standards were compared. For the optimum structural design, the objective function, presented as the fullweight of the sinusoidal corrugated web beams, and the slenderness, member forces, and maximum deflection of the beam, were considered constraints. Finally, the simple beam under the uniform load was adopted as a numerical example, and the effective probability parameters of the genetic operators were considered to find the global minimum point.

Strength and Stress Distribution Behavior for the Connections of Corrugated Steel Plates (파형강판 이음부의 강도 및 응력분포특성에 관한 연구)

  • This paper presents the numerical results in strength and stress distribution behavior for the connections of corrugated steel plates (CSP). The results obtained using the finite element method indicate that the CSP with =30mm of longitudinal edge lap, by the current standard specification, has very conservative values. The results also indicate the difference of strength behavior from the bolt arrangement. The strength behavior of standard corrugated type with staggered holes is only affected by circumferential edge lap, but the edge lap and bolthole spacing have an effect on the strength behavior for the deeply corrugated type with parallel holes. Based on these results, this paper examines the current specification of the connections for CSP.

A Study on the New Type Rib of Steel Deck Plates (새로운 형태의 강바닥판 리브에 대한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to propose an economic new type rib by applying plate stiffening methods of the corrugated plate and the honey-comb sandwich panel to the steel deck plate and comparing the new type rib with existing open and closed ribs. The trapezoidal corrugated type, ㄹ type, honey-comb type and ㅁ type ribs are considered as new type ribs and the moment and the steel volume are compared with that of open ribs and closed ribs. The results shows that the honey-comb type and ㅁ type ribs are good in aspects of economic feasibility and the ㅁ type is better than the honey-comb type. To make the ㅁ type rib applicable to the steel deck plate, the sensitivity analysis and parametric study are performed and the system to select the proper section under the particular stress condition is established. The closed rib of real bridges is compared with the ㅁ type rib of the proposed system and it is known that the new type rib is more economic. Therefore, more economic steel deck plates can be achieved by using the system proposed in this study for the plate stiffened with the new ㅁ type rib.

A Study on the Geometric Parameters that Influence the Trapezoidally Corrugated Webs Under Partial Edge Loading (제형파형강판의 지압 거동에 영향을 미치는 기하학적 인자에 관한 연구)

  • The corrugated web is a plate that was manufactured with a corrugated shape. It is widely used in bridges, buildings, and culverts. A girder with a corrugated web can be crippled by local, in-plane compressive loads. Due to its high out-of-plane strength, however, a stiffener is usually not needed in trapezoidally corrugated plates, and the corrugated profile of the web can change the boundary condition of the edge load. Some researchers have studied the strength of the partial-edge loading of the trapezoidally corrugated web, but they have not considered the profile of corrugation in their studies. This paper investigates the influence of the corrugate profile. A parametric study was conducted on the shape parameter using the finite-element method. In this parametric study, the relationship between the corrugated shape and the partial-edge strength was also investigated by dividing the partial-edge strength into the web capacity and the flange capacity.

Experimental study on seismic behavior of two-storey modular structure

  • Due to the unique construction method of modular steel buildings (MSBs) with units prefabricated fully off the site and assembled quickly on the site, the inter-module connection for easy operation and overall performance of the system were key issues. However, it was a lack of relevant research on the system-level performance of MSBs. This study investigated the seismic performance of two-storey modular steel structure with a proposed vertical rotary inter-module connection. Three full-scale quasi-static tests, with and without corrugated steel plate and its combination, were carried out to evaluate and compare their seismic behaviour. The hysteretic performance, skeleton curves, ductile performance, stiffness degradation, energy dissipation capacity, and deformation pattern were clarified. The results showed that good ductility and plastic deformation ability of such modular steel structures. Two lateral-force resistance mechanisms with different layout combinations were also discussed in detail. The corrugated steel plate could significantly improve the lateral stiffness and bearing capacity of the modular steel structure. The cooperative working mechanism of modules and inter-module connections was further analyzed. When the lateral stiffness of upper and lower modular structures was close, limited bending moment transfer may be considered for the inter-module connection. While a large lateral stiffness difference existed initially between the upper and lower structures, an obvious gap occurred at the inter-module connection, and this gap may significantly influence the bending moments transferred by the inter-module connections. Meanwhile, several design recommendations of inter-module connections were also given for the application of MSBs.

Behaviour of soil-steel composite bridge with various cover depths under seismic excitation

  • The design codes and calculation methods related to soil-steel composite bridges and culverts only specify the minimum soil cover depth. This value is connected with the bridge span and shell height. In the case of static and dynamic loads (like passing vehicles), such approach seems to be quite reasonable. However, it is important to know how the soil cover depth affects the behaviour of soil-steel composite bridges under seismic excitation. This paper presents the results of a numerical study of soil-steel bridges with different soil cover depths (1.00, 2.00, 2.40, 3.00, 4.00, 5.00, 6.00 and 7.00 m) under seismic excitation. In addition, the same soil cover depths with different boundary conditions of the soil-steel bridge were analysed. The analysed bridge has two closed pipe-arches in its cross section. The load-carrying structure was constructed as two shells assembled from corrugated steel plate sheets, designed with a depth of 0.05 m, pitch of 0.15 m, and plate thickness of 0.003 m. The shell span is 4.40 m, and the shell height is 2.80 m. Numerical analysis was conducted using the DIANA programme based on the finite element method. A nonlinear model with El Centro records and the time history method was used to analyse the problem.
