Marine ships have played an important role as a carrier, transporting much more than 80% of all international trading, and marine transportation is an internationally competitive, strategic, and great national important industry. However, those marine ships have the characteristics such as voyage of long distance, large-volume and lower speed than the other carry system. Therefore, it is important to manufacture a larger and faster ship, however, the steel plates which are consisted with most of those ships has brought about many corrosion problems in sea water such as general corrosion, localized corrosion, cavitation and erosion corrosion etc.. Most hulls of the ships have been protected with paintings, sacrificial anode, marine growth prevention system, and impressed current cathodic protection methods against numerious corrosion problems mentioned above. However, these conventional methods are not very effective because the rudder of ships stern are exposed to very severe corrosive environment such as tides, speeds of ships, cavitations and erosion corrosion, etc.. In this study, electrochemical and cavitation characteristics was investigated for the rudder material of ship which is exposed to serious corrosive environment. As a result, it is considered that the optimum cathodic protection potentials of rudder material is the range of -0.6 V ~ -0.8 V(Ag/AgCl) in static seawater.
The characteristics of cavitation-erosion damage with changes in the amplitude of 5052-O aluminum alloy for ships were investigated in a seawater environment. In the cavitation-erosion experiment, the cavitation environment was created using a vibration-generating device with a piezo-electric effect. The amplitudes of 5 ㎛, 10 ㎛, and 30 ㎛ were created by changing the geometric shape of the cavitation horn. The resistance characteristics of cavitation-erosion damage were evaluated by weight loss and pitting area. The damaged surface was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and 3D optical microscopy. As the amplitude increased, the amount of damage and the area of the damaged surface increased, and the damage was concentrated at the center and edge of the specimen. The pit was created after the initial incubation period with increasing experimental time, and then the pits were merged to grow and propagate into craters, and eventually, the surface was detached and damaged. The cavitation-erosion damage after 30 minutes with amplitude of 10 ㎛ and 30 ㎛ was 1.48 and 2.21 times compared to 5 ㎛, respectively.
Ships and offshore structures are exposed to harsh marine environments, and maintenance and repair are becoming increasingly important to the industry and the economy. The major corrosion phenomenons of metals and alloys in marine environment are pitting corrosion, stress corrosion cracking, crevice corrosion, fatigue corrosion, cavitation-erosion and etc. due to the effect of chloride ions and is quite serious. Methods of protection against corrosion can generally be divided into two groups: anodic protection and cathodic protection. Anodic protection is limited to the passivity characteristics of a material in its environment, while cathodic protection can apply methods such as sacrificial anode cathodic protection and impressed current cathodic protection. Sacrificial anode methods using Al and Zn alloys are widely used for marine structures and vessels intended for use in seawater. Impressed current cathodic protection methods are also widely used in marine environments, but tend to generate problems related to hydrogen embrittlement caused by hydrogen gas generation. Therefore, it is important to the proper maintenance and operation of the various corrosion protection systems for ship in the harsh marine environment.
Marine transportation by ships is characterized by remote, large-volume and lower rates than the others carry system. Ships account for over 80% of all international trading, and marine transportation is an internationally competitive, strategic, and great national important industry. The construction of larger and faster ships has brought about many problems such as cavitations and erosion corrosion. Cavitations and erosion corrosion make damages on materials and leads to break down members due to continuous physical contacts with shock waves and fluids from the generation and extinction of air bubbles in sea water vortex. The steel used for ship constructions was spray-coated with Al wire, and additionally sealed with fluorine silicone sealing material. Results of experiment, corrosion resistance of sealed thermal spray coating was improved, however in cavitation resistance, the large effect was not appeared. Accordingly, this study applied for thermal spray coating to provide better electrochemical characteristics and corrosion resistance in marine environment.
Some feasibility studies are conducted to produce an advanced ceramic coating, which reveals superior chemical and mechanical strength, on metal base structure used in chemical plant. This advanced coating on metallic frame can replace ceramic delivery pipe and reaction chamber used in chemical plant, which are operated in hi-temperature and corrosive/erosive environment. An dual spraying is adopted to reduce the residual stress in order to increase the coating thickness and the residual stress is estimated by in-situ manner. Then new methodology is tried to form special coating of yttrium aluminum garnet(YAG), which reveals hi-strength and low-creep rates at hi-temperature, superior anti-corrosion property, hi-stability against Alkali-Vapor corrosion, and so on, on iron base structure. To verify the formation of YAG during thermal spraying, XRD(X ray diffraction) technique was used.
Stainless steel is widely applied in many industrial fields due to its excellent anti-corrosion and durability characteristics. However, stainless steel is very vulnerable to cavitation attack caused by high speed flow of fluid in the chloride environments such as marine environment. These conditions promote intergranular corrosion and cavitation-erosion, leading to degradation of the structural integrity and service life. In order to prevent these problems, the stabilized stainless steel is applied to the offshore and shipbuilding industries. In this study, Ti was added to 19%Cr-9%Ni as the stabilizer element with different concentrations (0.26%, 0.71%), and their durabilities were evaluated with cavitation-erosion experiment by a modified ASTM G32 method. The microstructural change was observed with the stabilizer element contents. The result of the observation indicated that the amount of carbide precipitation was decreased and its size became finer with increasing Ti content. In the cavitation-erosion experiment, both weight loss and surface damage depth represented an inverse proportional relationship with the amount of Ti element. Consequently, the stainless steel containing 0.71% of Ti had excellent durability characteristics.
Most of sewage in our country has been made by concrete, and currently they shows gradual deterioration. One of serious problems happened in the sewage is a corrosion of sewage itself. Namely, biochemical corrosion is the most important one. Deterioration phenomenon in concrete used in sewage is occurred by environment condition of sewage, such as erosion by the acid, erosion by sulfate, corrosion by carbonation and so on several factors. However, at present, investigation data on durability of Kangnung city sewage is not sufficient. In addition, the prediction of repair time and selection of rehabilitation method is also not easy. Accordingly, in this research, investigation on durability of sewages located in Kangnung city was carried out. It will also supply the basic data for repair and rehabilitation.
The fresh water and sea water in present ships is used as cooling water for marine engine. Therefore, corrosion damage in seawater system is frequently occurred. In particular, in the impeller of pump, the performance and material span due to the corrosion and cavitation erosion has adverse effects. Most of the pump impellers in vessels are used Cu-Al alloy. Cu-Al alloy which having the excellent mechanical properties and corrosion resistance is widely used in marine environments. However, despite the excellent characteristics, the periodic replacement parts due to the cavitation damage in seawater is vulnerable to economic viewpoint. In this study, Cu-Al alloy used with impeller for centrifugal pump were conducted various experiments to evaluate its characteristics in seawater and fresh water solutions. As an electrochemical result, the dynamic conditions that exposed to the cavitation environment presented high corrosion current density with collapse of the cavity compared with the static conditions. Cavitation test results, the weightloss and weightloss rate in fresh water are observed more than those of seawater.
