Image Blurring Estimation and Calibration with a Joint Transform Correlator

  • The Joint Transform Correlator (JTC) has been the most suitable technique for real time optical pattern recognition and target tracking applications. This paper proposes a new application of the JTC system for an analysis of the blurring effect of the optical images caused by a defocused lens. We present the relation between the correlation peak, optical transfer function (OTF), and the amount of blurring caused by focusing error. Moreover, we show a possibility of calibrating the blurred image by simply measuring the correlation peak.

  • An acousto optic correlator system for performing real-time correlation of two signals is constructed. It uses AOD is described. The statistical analysis for correlator's output SNR is presented and experimental procedure for implemention of this technique are result shown. Since the correlation intergration is performed in time rather than space, the SNR of this system can be greatly improved.

Amplitude Correction Factors of KVN Observations Correlated by DiFX and Daejeon Correlators

  • We report results of investigation of amplitude calibration for very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations with Korean VLBI Network (KVN). Amplitude correction factors are estimated based on comparison of KVN observations at 22 GHz correlated by Daejeon hardware correlator and DiFX software correlator in Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institue (KASI) with Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations at 22 GHz by DiFX software correlator in National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO). We used the observations for compact radio sources, 3C 454.3 and NRAO 512 which are almost unresolved for baselines in a range of 350-477 km. VLBA visibility data of the sources observed with similar baselines as KVN are selected, fringe-fitted, calibrated, and compared in their amplitudes. We found that visibility amplitudes of KVN observations should be corrected by factors of 1.14 and 1.40 when correlated by DiFX and Daejeon correlators, respectively. These correction factors are attributed to the combination of two steps of 2-bit quantization in KVN observing systems and characteristics of Daejeon correlator.

  • GPS provides two services which include SPS(Standard Positioning Service) and PPS(Precise Positioning Service). While SPS users can navigate in more precise due to cancellation of SA(Selective Availability), SPS users has still less precision navigation than PPS users. L1/L2CS integrated receiver can provide more precise navigation to SPS users because the delay of Ionosphere will be cancelled by using two frequencies (L1 and L2). This paper designs an integrated L1/L2CS digital correlator to prepare the L2C signal that will be provided in 2003. Also L2CS transmitter is designed to confirm L2CS correlator.

  • In this paper, we proposed new algorithm that improves the acquisition performance of the PN code searcher used in DS-CDMA systems. Using the mean deviation computed from the correlator output of the PN code searcher, it is possible to estimate received channel environment. To satisfy the required acquisition performance in estimated channel environment, the PN code searcher changes the correlator tap size adaptively. Proposed algorithm shows improved performance compared with conventional algorithm using the fixed correlator tap size.

  • In this paper, a binary phase extraction joiont transform correlator (BPEJTC)system is proposed as a new phase-type optical correlator in which the correlation errors and DC component are dramtically reduced and optical efficiency and correlation performance are also improved by reconstructing the joint transform power spectrum (JTPS) of the conventional joint transform correlator (JTC)system form which the autocorrelation and crosscorrelation siganls generated in each self-plane are removed, and the binary phase function is extracted from the phase value of the reconstructed JTPS. Through some computer simulation and optical experimental results, the possibility of the implementation of the real-time multi-target tracking and recognition system is also suggested.

  • The objective of this paper lies in presenting in theory an interpretation of how signals are detected from the real-time A/O correlator, and scrutinize by experimental processes, thereby to devise a method by which correlation function can be detected in a favorable way in time. An A/O system for real-time correlation function of two signals has been constructed. This optical correlator when at work in intensity modulation mode by acousto- optic device renders higher output signal to noise ration, as compared with the traditional optical signal detection, has simple system as compared with existing optical correlator in amplitude modulation mode.

Effect of Doppler Bandwidth on the Performance of Channel Sounding (도플러 대역폭이 채널 추정의 성능에 미치는 영향)

  • In this work, we consider the effect of doppler bandwidth on the performance of channel sounding. We develop the mathematical formulation of the problem and compare the MMSE channel estimator to the simple correlator. Examples of the performance of the MMSE and correlator estimators are presented for the single-input single-output (SISO) case with various values of Doppler bandwidth to assess the impact of time variation. The results show that as the $f_dT$ product increases the performance of both the MMSE and correlator estimates gets worse, and that the performance of the MMSE estimator improves relative to the correlator.We also consider case that the exact statistics of the channel are unknown It is shown that when the mismatch is not too large, the MMSE estimator with mismatch still does better than the simple correlator, but if the mismatch is large, then the correlator can do better.

Design of lumped six-port phase correlator and performance of lumped direct conversion receiver (집중 소자형 6단자 위상 상관기 설계와 집중 소자형 직접변환 수신 성능)

  • The six-port phase correlator using lumped elements was designed and fabricated in this paper, also the receiving performance of L-band direct conversion receiver using lumped six-port phase correlator element was analyzed. The proposed L-band lumped six-port phase correlator element was composed of a resistive power divider and the twist-wire coaxial cables. The proposed lumped six-port structure provides the small-sized configuration and wide-band characteristics. The performance of the L-band lumped direct conversion receiver structure was measured under the conditions of 1.69 GHz frequency for LO-CW signal and RF-QPSK signal, which are input signals for the lumped six-port phase correlator element. The direct conversion receiving structure using the proposed lumped six-port phase correlator element can recovered the good digital I/Q signal.

  • In this paper, we introduce the performance evaluation and development of Raw VLBI Data Buffer(RVDB) system for the synchronized playback processing of observed data in Korea-Japan Joint VLBI Correlator(KJJVC). The high-speed correlation processing system is under development so that the radio data obtained with 8192 channels and 8 Gbps speed from 16 stations will be able to be processed. When the recorded data of each station are played to correlator, the time synchronization of each station is very important because the correlator should process the data obtained with same time and condition. There are many types of recorder systems in the East Asia VLBI Network (EAVN). Therefore it is required to prepare the special time synchronized playback processing system to synchronize the time tag of observed data. The developed RVDB system consists of Data Input Output(DIO), 10GbE switch, and Disk Data Buffer(DDB). It can record the data with maximum 2 Gbps speed, and can play back the data to correlator with nominal 2 Gbps speed. To enable to play back the data of different playback system to the correlator, we developed the high-speed time synchronized playback processing system. We carried out the experiments of playing back and correlation for gigabit correlator and VCS trial product so as to confirm the performance of developed time synchronized playback processing system. In case of online and offline playing back experiment for gigabit correlator, we confirmed that the online and offline correlation results were the same. In case of playing back experiment for VCS trial product, we verified that the wide band and narrow band correlation results were also the same. Through the playing back experiments of RVDB system, the effectiveness of developed RVDB system was verified. In this paper, the system design, construction and experimental results are shown briefly.
