This study is an effort to develop a series of empirical procedure for the determination of design flood for a small watershed based on the unit hydrograph theory. It is shown that a flood discharge of a watershed with a specific return period can be expressed as a product of its watershed area, rainfall factor, runoff factor and flood peak reduction factor. Since the procedures for the determination of rainfall factor and runoff factor were already developed in the previous study (13) a series of step-by-step procedure is devised to empirically determine the flood peak reduction factor in the present study. Using the methodology developed herein the 50-year design flood, which is of concern in the drainage of agricultural lands, is estimated for a watershed on upper Kyungan River and compared with the design floods by the existing methods now in use. The flood peak reduction factor was correlated with the dimensionless parameter consisted of the rainfall duration divided by the basin lag time, which was computed from the derived unit hydrographs by the method of moment. The unit hydrographs of various durations were synthesized by the method of build up and S-curve. A multiple correlation was also made between the basin lag time and the physiographic parameters of the watershed, i.e., the stream length and the average stream slope.

Because cable-supported bridges have long spans and large members, their movements and geometrical changes by temperatures tend to be bigger than those of small or medium-sized bridges. Therefore, it is important for maintenance engineers to monitor and assess the effect of temperature on the cable-supported bridges. To evaluate how much the superstructure expands or contracts when subjected to changes in temperature is the first step for the maintenance. Thermal movements of a cable-stayed bridge in service are evaluated by using long-term temperatures and displacements data. Displacements data are obtained from extensometers and newly installed GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) receivers on the bridge. Based on the statistical data such as air temperatures, each sensor's temperatures, average temperatures and effective temperatures, correlation analysis between temperatures and displacements has been performed. Average temperatures or effective temperatures are most suitable for the evaluation of thermal movements. From linear regression analysis between effective temperatures and displacements, the variation rate's of displacement to temperature have been calculated. From additional regression analysis between expansion length's and variation rate's of displacement to temperature, the thermal expansion coefficient and neutral point have been estimated. Comparing these parameters with theoretical and analytical results, a practical procedure for evaluating the real thermal behaviors of the cable-supported bridges is proposed.

Simultaneous field measurements of short-period and long-period waves were made at five stations inside or outside Okkye Harbor, which is located in the east coast of Korea. Based on the measured data, spacial and temporal variations of the long-period wave energy were examined. Three smoothing methods were examined for the spectral estimates: fixed interval averaging method, incremental interval averaging method, and moving averaging method. It was shown that a proper smoothing method should be chosen depending on the period of first resonant mode and the length of data being used. By comparing the results obtained using the long-term data with those obtained using two-day data, we showed that it is necessary to analyze the data of calm seas and storm seas separately. The Helmholtz resonant period in Okkye Harbor was found to be about 9.6 minutes with its relative amplification ratio of 9 to 10, and local amplifications were apparent at the periods of 1.2 to 1.3 minutes and 0.7 minute. During calm seas, both at the harbor entrance and inside the harbor the energy of the waves of 9 minutes or longer period was larger than the infra-gravity wave energy by more than 100 times. However, during storm seas the energy level was very high all over the period band, and local amplification was larger than that during calm seas by more than 100 times, especially inside the harbor, Finally it was shown that the energies of the Helmholtz resonant mode and the infra-gravity waves of 1 to 2 minutes are proportional to the storm wave height.
In order to measure the inter- and intraspecific genetic divergences within the genus Alexandrium, the variations within the internal transcribed spacer (ITS1 and ITS2) regions and 5.85 ribosomal RNA gene of eight Alexandrium species were examined for 33 strains from diverse geographical locations by direct sequencing. Five isolates of A. tamarense (AT-2, AT-6, AT-10, AT-A and AT-B) from Jinhae Bay, Korea were found to be completely identical to a Japanese strain OFX151-A. The length of the amplified ITSI-5.85-ITS2 region varied from 481 nucleotides (in A. margalefi) to 528 nucleotides (in A. affine CU1-1). ITS1 and ITS2 nucleotide lengths were negatively correlated, whereas a positive correlation was found between their G+C content. The degree of sequence divergence ranged from 0.3% (1 bp) to a maximum of 53% (305 Up). Pairwise sequence comparisons revealed a small degree of divergence between A. tamarense and A. Pundyense isolates (1.2 - 2.3% = 6-12 bp), but a high degree of divergence between A. tamarense and A. catenella (19.8% = 102 bp), and between A. catenella and A. Pundyense (19.7%). Although most nodes were weakly supported by bootstrap values, some types tend to form independent molecular groups. A. catenella isolates also formed an independent molecular sub-group, with relaticula strong bootstrap values (94% or 85% and 79% or 98%, respectively in PAUP and NJ trees). Interestingly, A. cohorticula and A. frateculus always clustered within the same sub-group, this result being supported by strong bootstrap values. Our results indicate that the ITS regions provide useful informations on hierarchical population genetic structure and a high phylogenetic resolution in intraspecific and interspecific Alexandrium population.

Recent Experimental results show that the J integral can be effectively used to obtain a valid parameter for predicting plane strain and plane stress fracture. However, only a few research results have been reported for the effect of thickness where the plane strain state can not be assumed. A purpose of this study is to find the behavior of fracture touhness and tearing modulus varing the specimen thickness. The type of specimen in the present study is compact tension (CT). The thicknesses of the low carbon steel specimens that are used in the experiments are 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25mm. The measurement of crack length is taken by optical measurements method. From the study, the followings are found; 1) The fracture toughness and the tearing modulus which are obtained by using Yoon's and Simpson's formula show more conservative than that by using Rice's and Merkel's. 2) The fracture toughness is increase in specimen thickness which is reached 15mm. Beyond this thickness the fracture toughness is decreased in specimen thickness. 3) In the case of CT specimen with the thickness ranging from 5 to 25mm, the tearing modulus which is applied the same J integral equation is almost constant. 4) By using Yoon's formula, the correlation of the plane slress fracture toughness J sub(C) with specimen thickness B is expressed as the following formula. J sub(C)/J sub(IC)=1.7-15.1(B/W)+112.9(B/W) super(2) -301.3(B/W) super(3) +260.6(B/W) super(4)
Giardia intestinalis infections arise primarily from contaminated food or water Zoonotic transmission is possible, and at least 7 major assemblages including 2 assemblages recovered from humans have been identified. The determination of the genotype of G. intestinalis is useful not only for assessing the correlation of clinical symptoms and genotypes, but also for finding the infection route and its causative agent in epidemiological studies. In this study, methods to identify the genotypes more specifically than the known 2 genotypes recovered from humans have been developed using the intergenic spacer (IGS) region of rDNA. The IGS region contains varying sequences and is thus suitable for comparing isolates once they are classified as the same strain. Genomic DNA was extracted from cysts isolated from the feces of 5 Chinese, 2 Laotians and 2 Koreans infected with G. intestinalis and the trophozoites of WB, K1, and GS strains cultured in the laboratory, respectively. The rDNA containing the IGS region was amplified by PCR and cloned. The nucleotide sequence of the 3' end of IGS region was determined and examined by multiple alignment and phylogenetic analysis. Based on the nucleotide sequence of the IGS region, 13 G. intestinalis isolates were classified to assemblages A and B, and assemblage A was subdivided into A1 and A2. Then, the primers specific to each assemblage were designed, and PCR was peformed using those primers. It detected as little as 10 pg of DNA, and the PCR amplified products with the specific length to each assemblage (A1, 176bp; A2, 261 bp; B, 319 bp) were found. The PCR specific to 3 assemblages of G. intestinalis did not react with other bacteria or protozoans, and it did not react with G. intestinalis isolates obtained from dogs and rats. It was thus confirmed that by applying this PCR method amplifying the IGS region, the detection of G. intestinalis and its genotyping can be determined simultaneously.
After investigating the developmental process of galls forming on leaf of Zelkova serrata and analyzing the composition and contents of the free amino acids in leaves, galls and haemolymph of aphids, we have come to the following results. Galls induced were mostly distributed on the middle of lower part of leaf to the petiole along vein and most of investigated leaves had one gall only. The growth of galls continued in length and width until Paracolopha morrisoni habitants which transformed into alate adult left the gall. These results also indicate that galls are closely connected with a portion of plant tissues as well as foods and habitats of aphids. 26${\sim}$29 kinds of free amino acids such as proline, alanine and valine and so on, detected in leaves, gall and haemolymph of aphids. The composition of free amino acids were similar in three materials examined, but proline and asparatic acid showed the highest quantity in the leaves and falls, respectively. In case of aphids, alanine was extremely higher as 18.4% of total contents of free amino acids, in 1st instar of fundatrix stage. Total contents of free amino acids in the apteral adult stage of aphid were also increased than in the 1st instar stage. This investigation implies that nitrogen source such as free amino acids is apparently a major growth-material like carbohydrates during development of galls in Zelkova serrata.

It has been reported that the femoral morphology has a major correlation to femoral neck fractures(FNF). Previous studies to analyze these correlations have relied on mechanical testing and finite element methods. However, these methods have not been widely applied to various femur samples and models. It is because of the availability of the samples from both patients and cadavers, and also of the geometric limitations in changing the shape of the models. In this study we analyzed femoral neck fractures using a parameterized femoral model that could provide flexibility in changing the geometry of the model for the wide applications of FNF analysis. With the parameterization a variety of models could be generated by changing four major dimensions: femoral head diameter(FHD), femoral neck diameter(FND), femoral neck length(FNL), and neck-shaft angle(NSA). We have performed FEA on the models to compute the stress distributions and reaction forces, and compare them with the data previously generated from mechanical testing. The analysis results indicate that the FND is significantly related with the FNF and the FHD is not significantly related with the FNF.
The purpose of this study is to identify the status of school health and analyze affecting factors of school nurses' self confidence and nursing activities of the secondary school in Seoul. The data was collected from 13th of August to 30th of October. The self reported questionairs were distributed during one of the school nurses seminars held in Seoul and 93 secondary school nurses answered. Factors affecting self confidence and nursing activities of school nurses The general characteristics of the school nurses and the school health resources were related to self confidence and nursing activities. The most significant variable to nurses' self confidence was type of the school ownership and the presence of school health organization was the most significant factor to nursing activities.
Field experiments were conducted to study the effect of amendments such as lime and organic matter for mulberry trees on the newly reclaimed sandy loam soil for three years. The results are summarized as follows. 1. Compared to the N.P.K check plot with treatments, leaf yield was increased by 20 to 80%. Leaf yield was higher in the order of NPK+magnesia lime < NPK+compost > NK+fused phosphate NPK+green manure > NPK+barley straw> NPKplot. 2. Mulberry leaf yield showed high significant positive correlation with total weight and volume of root, length and number of wattles and the content of CaO or MgO in leaf respectively. 3. It is known that dead part sympom of top branch during cold season is associated with unbalance magnesium to potassium in mulberry leaf. It is estimated that such symptom was deminished when the ratio of $K_2O/MgO$ in leaf becomes 6.0 or higher. 4. In establishing a mulberry field on hilly reclaimed soil, application of magnesium and calcium with compost was essential but higher amount of potassium fertilizer should be followed in order to prevent dead part symptom of top branch of mulberry trees.
