  • A novel vision-based scheme of extracting real-time traffic information parameters is presented. The method is based on a region classification followed by a spatio-temporal image analysis. The detection region images for each traffic lane are classified into one of the three categories: the road, the vehicle, and the shadow, using statistical and structural features. Misclassification in a frame is corrected by using temporally correlated features of vehicles in the spatio-temporal image. Since only local images of detection regions are processed, the real-time operation of more than 30 frames per second is realized without using dedicated parallel processors, while ensuring detection performance robust to the variation of weather conditions, shadows, and traffic load.

  • A numerical study on the similarity of the developing laminar flows between in a straight duct rotating about an axis perpendicular to that of the duct and in a stationary curved duct was carried out. In order to clarify the analogy of two flows, dimensionless parameters K/sub LR/ = Re/(equation omitted) and Rossby number, Ro, in a rotating straight duct were used as a set corresponding to Dean number K/sub LC/ = Re/(equation omitted), and curvature ratio, λ, in a stationary curved duct. For the large values of Ro and λ, it is shown that the flow field satisfies the 'asymptotic invariance property', that is, there are strong quantitative similarities between the two flows such as flow patterns, friction factors, and maximum axial velocity magnitudes for the same values of K/sub LR/ and K/sub LC/ if they are correlated with dimensionless axial distances Z/sub R/ = z/(equation omitted) for a rotating duct flow and Z/sub C/ = z/(equation omitted) for a stationary curved duct flow.

  • This experiment was carried out for estimating genetic parameters, such as heritabilities, the phenotrpic and genotypic correlations of major agronomic characters with 64 cultivars in wanggol. Heritabilities of leaf length, number of leaf, stem length, stem diameter, number of stem and dry weight of medulla were higher, but that of dry weight of cortical were relatively lower. The genotypic correlation coefficients between stem length and dry weight of medulla, and between stem length and dry weight of cortical showed highly positive correlation, and stem length, stem diameter and dry weight of medulla were significantly correlated with dry weight of cortical, those characters gave high direct effect as same level in path-coefficient analysis.

  • This paper sought to investigate pupil size variability, pupil size parameters in terms of time domain and frequency domain, the autonomic activity change induced by posture change, degree of sleepiness and cognitive task (math task). With a specially designed pupil image acquisition system in the dark room, these three kinds of experiments were performed to induce a dominant state of sympathetic or parasympathetic activation. Electrocardiogram and pupil size were measured in all the experiments. Based on three experiments, we calculated heart rate variability. In the pupil size analysis, we calculated the mean and standard deviation of pupil size (in time domain), and proposed several frequency bands that exhibit different autonomic activation between different sessions. The results indicate that in terms of heart rate variability, posture change exhibited significant differences but not between sleepiness level, or between cognitive task. Pupil sizes differed only during the postures. And we found some frequency bands that correlated with autonomic activation in each experiment. While heart rate variability reflects posture change that need cardiac control, pupil size variability reflects not only posture induced autonomic activation but sleepiness and cognitive load, which is processed in the brain, in time and frequency domain parameter.

  • Browning of tea infusion is an obstructive factor influencing shelf life of ready-to-drink green tea. Effects of temperature and illumination on the browning of green tea infusion were investigated. It was shown that both elevated temperature and illumination led to the browning of green tea infusion, but temperature had greater effect on infusion color and level of catechins than illumination. The levels of unoxidized catechins such as (-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCg), (-)-epigallocatechin (EGC), (-)-epicatechin gallate (ECg), (-)-epicatechin (EC), and total catechins remaining in the tea infusion were significantly correlated to color parameters of the tea infusion. Sodium ascorbate inhibited the infusion browning by suppressing the oxidation of tea catechins and it is considered to be a more suitable preservative for prolonging shelf life of ready-to-drink green tea than ascorbic acid because it has less effect on tea taste. The effects of temperature and illumination on the epimerization of catechins were also discussed.

  • Several benefits provided by white clover (Tnifoliurn repens L.) can be elevated as relationship between its morphological and physiological characteristics is clarified. The experiment was done to analyze the relationship between them in the clover with different leaf size. Individual plants of Osceola (large leaf), Grasslands Huia (medium leaf) and Aberystwyth S184 (small leaf) were grown in 15m plastic pot containing a 1:2:1 soil:sand:Promix mixture for 55 days, and then clipped to remove all fully expanded leaves every 7, 14 or 28 days. To measure the cultivar response, plants were sampled for morphological and physiological parameters on the date (0) after final harvest and 1, 3, 7, 14 and 28 days after the final harvest and then their relationship was analyzed. Osceola had greater leaf area per trifoliolate but less no. of leaves per plant to result in similar total leaf area per plant of all cltivars. Stolon length and no. of growing tips per plant declined with smaller leaf size although the result in biomass was reverse. Stolon of all cultivars showed the greatest fluctuation in total nonstructud carbohydrate during the regrowing period but nitrogen concentrations of all their fractions and dinitrogen fixation did similar patterns. Stolon and root of Osceola, moreover, were the highest ones. Biomass, stolon length and total leaf area per plant of all cultivars were positively correlated to carbohydrate concentration of all frauions and dinitrogen fixation. In Osceola relationship between nitrogen concentration of stolon and the characters showed in Osceola was positively done.

  • The near-collapse performance limit is defined as the deformation at the 20% drop of maximum base shear in the decreasing region of the pushover curve for ductile framed buildings. Although monotonic pushover analysis is preferred due to the simple application procedure, this analysis gives rise to overestimated results by neglecting the cumulative damage effects. In the present study, the acceptabilities of monotonic and cyclic pushover analysis results for the near-collapse performance limit state are determined by comparing with Incremental Dynamic Analysis (IDA) results for a 5-story Reinforced Concrete framed building. IDA is performed to obtain the collapse point, and the near-collapse drift ratios for monotonic and cyclic pushover analysis methods are obtained separately. These two alternative drift ratios are compared with the collapse drift ratio. The correlations of the maximum tensile and compression strain at the base columns and beam plastic rotations with interstory drift ratios are acquired using the nonlinear time history analysis results by the simple linear regression analyses. It is seen that these parameters are highly correlated with the interstory drift ratios, and the results reveal that the near-collapse point acquired by monotonic pushover analysis causes unacceptably high tensile and compression strains at the base columns, as well as large plastic rotations at the beams. However, it is shown that the results of cyclic pushover analysis are acceptable for the near-collapse performance limit state.

  • The abrasivity of rocks results in tool wear in rock excavation or drilling projects. It can affect significantly the cost and schedule of the projects performed in abrasive rock massess. For this reason, the understanding of the mechanism of rock abrasivity is very important for excavation projects. This study investigates the effect of strength on the LCPC abrasivity coefficient (LAC) for igneous rocks. The LCPT test, the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) and the Brazilian tensile strength (BTS) tests were carried out on the igneous rock samples. The abrasive mineral content (AMC) was also determined for each rock type. First, the LAC was correlated to the AMC and a very good correlation was found between the two parameters. Then, the multiple regression analysis was carried out by including the AMC, UCS and BTS to the analysis in order to infer the effect of the strength on the LAC. It was seen that the correlation coefficients of multiple regression models were greater than that of the relation between the LAC and the AMC. It is concluded that the AMC is the dominant parameter determining the abrasivity of rock. On the other hand, the rock strength has also significant effect on rock abrasivity.

  • Objectives: To compare the metabolic indices, lipid profile, androgens, and prostate specific antigen between prostate cancer and BPH and between grades of prostate cancer in a cross-sectional study. Materials and Methods: The study enrolled 95 cases of prostate cancer and 95 cases of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Prostate gland volume was measured using transrectal ultrasound. We compared insulin, testosterone, dihydrotestosterone, prostate specific antigen levels and lipid profile between prostate cancer of different grades and BPH. Further, prostate cancer patients were classified into low grade and high grade. Unpaired t-test for normally distributed variables and Man-Whitney U test for non-normal variables were used to assess differences. Results: We found that prostate cancer patients had significantly higher levels of insulin, testosterone, PSA, cholesterol, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) in comparison to their BPH counterparts. Higher levels of these parameters also correlated with a higher grade of the disease. Conclusions: We conclude that higher levels of insulin, testosterone, PSA, and cholesterol correlate with a higher risk of prostate cancer, and also with a higher grade of the disease.

  • This paper proposes a speech enhancement algorithm to improve the speech intelligibility by suppressing both reverberation and background noise. The algorithm adopts a non-causal single-channel minimum variance distortionless response (MVDR) filter to exploit an additional information that is included in the noisy-reverberant signals in subsequent frames. The noisy-reverberant signals are decomposed into the parts of the desired signal and the interference that is not correlated to the desired signal. Then, the filter equation is derived based on the MVDR criterion to minimize the residual interference without bringing speech distortion. The estimation of the correlation parameter, which plays an important role to determine the overall performance of the system, is mathematically derived based on the general statistical reverberation model. Furthermore, the practical implementation methods to estimate sub-parameters required to estimate the correlation parameter are developed. The efficiency of the proposed enhancement algorithm is verified by performance evaluation. From the results, the proposed algorithm achieves significant performance improvement in all studied conditions and shows the superiority especially for the severely noisy and strongly reverberant environment.
