  • The response correction factor ( h) is a factor to convert the response of the chamber in solid phantom to the response in water. In RW3 solid phantom, the dependency of beam quality and depth for high energy X-rays are known characteristics, however the dependency of field size, SSD, and chamber type are unknown. In this work we have studied the unknown characteristics on the dependency of response correction factor. The farmer type chamber (FC65G) and small chamber (CC13) were used and two beam qualities of 6 and 15 MV were evaluated. The measured response correction factors at the depth of 5 cm and 10 cm were h = 1.015 and 1.021 for 6 MV X-rays, and h = 1.024 and 1.029 for 15 MV X-rays. In conclusion the response correction factor did not depend on the field size and SSD while depending on the beam quality and depth. In the chambers, there are small differences between the two chambers used in this study but we think additional study for more chambers should be required. The results in this study can be used for analyzing the measured values from ionization chamber dosimetry in RW3.

  • Currently, the response correction factor is calculated by comparing the response measured by the load test on a bridge with the response analyzed in the initial analytical model. Then the load rating and the load carrying capacity are evaluated. However, the response correction factor gives a value that fluctuates depending on the measurement location and load condition. In particular, when the initial analytical model is not suitable for representing the behavior of a bridge, the range of variation is large and the analysis response by the calibrated model may give a result that is different from the measured response. In this study, a pseudo-static load test was applied to obtain static response with dynamic components removed under various load conditions of a vehicle moving at a low speed. Static response was measured on two similar PSC-I girder bridges, and the response correction factors for displacement and strain were calculated for each of the two bridges. When the initial analysis model was not properly set up, it is verified that the response of the analytical model corrected by the average response correction factor does not fall within the margin of error with the measured response.

  • Manganese nodule abundance estimated based on operation of a Free Fall Grab(FFG) needs to be corrected to make up for its incomplete recovery of nodule, because FFGs can not recover all the nodules distributed on seabed. The correction factor for nodule abundance was proposed as 1.29 and 1.13 in 1994 and 2002, respectively, mainly based on the analyses of seabed images. In this study we collected manganese nodules using both FFG and Box Corer(BC) at same stations to examine the accuracy of the previous correction factors. It was found that the nodule recovery of the BC was 1.4 times greater than that of the FFG at the same sampling station, suggesting the necessity of re-evaluation of the previously proposed correction factor for FFG. More extensive sampling and improvement of image analysis method are required to improve the precision of nodule abundance correction factor for FFG.

  • The universal soil loss equation (USLE), a model for estimating the potential soil loss, has been used not only in research areas but also in establishing national policies in South Korea. Despite its wide applicability, USLE cannot adequately address the effect of seasonal variances. To overcome this limit, the ArcGIS-based Sediment Assessment Tool for Effective Erosion (ArcSATEEC) has been developed as an alternative model. Although the field-scale (< 100 ㎡) application of this model produced reliable estimation results, it is still challenging to validate accuracy of the model estimation because it only estimates potential soil losses, not the actual sediment yield. Therefore, in this study, a method for estimating actual soil loss based on the ArcSATEEC model was suggested. The model was applied to eight watersheds in South Korea to estimate sediment yields. Correction factor was introduced for each watershed, and the estimated sediment yield was compared with that of the estimated yield by LOAD ESTimator (LOADEST). Sediment yield estimation for all watersheds exhibited reliable results, and the validity of the proposed correction factor was confirmed, suggesting the correction factor needs to be considered in estimating actual soil loss.

  • The ButterStar Observatory at the Dongducheon High School has been working for photographic observations of the Sun since October 16, 2002. In this study, we observed the Sun at the ButterStar observatory for 3,364 days from October 16, 2002 to December 31, 2011, and analyzed the photographic sunspot data obtained in 1,965 days. The correction factor $K_b$ for the entire observing period is 0.9519, which is calculated using the linear least square method to the relationship between the daily sunspot number, $R_B$, and the daily international relative sunspot number, $R_i$. The yearly correction factor calculated for each year varies slightly from year to year and shows a trend to change along the solar cycle. The correction factor is larger during the solar maxima and smaller during the solar minima in general. This implies that the discrepancy between a relative sunspot number, R, and the daily international relative sunspot number, $R_i$, can be reduced by using a yearly correction factor. From 2002 to 2008 in solar cycle 23, 35.4% and 64.6% of sunspot groups and 35.1% and 64.9% of isolated sunspots in average occurred in the northern hemisphere and in the southern hemisphere, respectively, and from 2008 to 2011 in solar cycle 24, 61.3% and 38.7% of sunspot groups and 65.0% and 35.0% of isolated sunspots were observed, respectively. This result shows that the occurrence frequency for each type of sunspot group changes along the solar cycle development, which can be interpreted as the emerging and decaying process of sunspot groups is different depending on the phase of solar cycle. Therefore, it is considered that a following study would contribute to the efforts to understand the dependence of the dynamo mechanism on the phase of solar cycle.

  • In this paper, a novel utility connected photovoltaic power generation system with unity power factor and uninterruptable power system facility and its control strategy are proposed. The proposed photovoltaic(PV) system is connected in parallel between utility and load. The PV system provides an uninterruptable voltage to load, a maximum power tracking to solar array, and power factor correction to the utility. The proposed system has the following advantages compared with the conventional utility connected PV system. 1. Harmonic elimination Function 2. Feeding the photovoltaic energy to the utility 3. Providing the uninterruptible power source along battery to the load In case that the photovoltaic array system is on the poor power generation, the battery and capacitor of the PV system are charged by three phase utility source and the inverter in the PV system only provides the reactive current to eliminate the harmonic current exited on the utility. In the normal operation mode, the PV system supplies active power to load and reactive power to utility in order to maintain the unity power factor and to regulate ac load voltage.

  • Switching Mode Power Supply(SMPS) is widely used in many industrial fields. Power factor improvement and harmonic reduction technique are very important in SMPS. In this paper, we propose the circuit applied Flying Capacitor Snubber for improving power factor of boost converter on fast switching state. Snubber circuit consists of a inductor, two diodes and a capacitor. The losses of switching are reduced by inserting a snubber inductor in the series path of the boost switch and the rectifier diode to control the di/dt rate of the rectifier during it's turn-off. Prior to actual experiment, the circuit analysis Is implemented by PSPICE simulation.

  • An integrated zero current switching(ZCS) quasi-resonant converter(QRC) for power factor correction and high efficiency with single switch is proposed in this thesis. Boost integrated circuit operating discontinuous conduction mode(DCM) and QRC are used for power factor correction and reducing switching loss, respectively. A prototype converter has been designed and experimented. At rated condition, the THD in the input current waveform of this prototype has approximately 18%. The efficiency is obtained about 70%, the power factor is about 0.985 as well. Therefore, the proposed converter is suitable for a low power level converter with operating switching frequency above several hundred KHz.
