  • The 5086-H116 Al-Alloy plate specimens having an edge through-thickness notch were investigated to find out the characteristics of the corner crack propagation by the plane bending fatigue. The experiments were also carried out in order to clarify the change of the corner crack propagation behaviour due to the various materials and their thicknesses. In addition, the retardation effect of overload on the corner crack propagation was quantatively studied. Main results obtained are as follows; 1. In the case of estimating the crack propagation rate of the corner crack, it is more reasonable to consider the growth rate of fracture surface area than that of crack length. 2. The shape of the corner crack growing in the plane plate under the bending fatigue can be estimated. 3. The crack propagation rate increases with the increasing of the thickness and the decreasing of the Young's modulus of materials. 4. Regardless of a thickness and kind of materials of specimen, the characteristics of the corner crack propagation can be concluded. 5. The retardation effect of overload is distinct in the corner crack propagation.

  • Nozzle corner cracks present at the intersection of reactor pressure vessels (RPVs) and inlet or outlet nozzles have been a persistent problem for a number of years. The fracture analysis of such nozzle corner cracks is very important and critical for the efficient design and assessment of the structural integrity of RPVs. This paper aims to perform an engineering critical assessment of RPVs with nozzle corner cracks subjected to several transients accompanied by pressurized thermal shocks. The critical crack size of the RPV model with nozzle corner cracks under transient loading is evaluated on failure assessment curve. In particular, the influence of cladding on the crack initiation of nozzle corner crack under thermal transients is studied. The influence of primary internal pressure and secondary thermal stress on the stress field at nozzle corner and SIF at crack front is analyzed. Finally, the influence of different crack size and crack shape on the final critical crack size is analyzed.

  • The objective of this paper is to obtain stress intensity factor solutions for a corner crack originating at bolt holes in a rotating disc. Initially two-dimensional finite element analyses of a rotating disc with bolt holes are performed to determine the maximum stress region. Subsequently three-dimensional finite element analyses of a rotating disc with a corner crack originating at the bolt holes are performed with a variety of crack geometries. According to the numerical results, the maximum stress intensity factor, with an increase in crack depth ratio, was observed at the surface of the plate due to the interference effect of corner crack and disc bore.

  • The behavior of corner crack propagation by unidirectional plane bending fatigue was investigated in the butt welded joints of SS41 and SM50 steel plates including an edge through-thickness notch. The properties of fatigue crack propagation were inspected in the weld metal, heat-affected zone, and base metal of the welded joints. Main results obtained are as follows; (1) When a plate with an edge through-thickness notch is loaded by plane bending fatigue in indirection, the 2 variant corner cracks on the upper and lower edge of the plate are initiated and propagated respectively from the notch. (2) In case of a specimen containing a corner crack, it is more reasonable to estimate the crack propagation rate by area of fracture surface than by crack surface length. (3) The rate of fatigue crack propagation becomes faster in the following order; weld metal, heat-affected zone, and base metal. (4) The specimen including reinforcement shape is rapidly failed throughout bond due to effect of its shape when the repeated load exceeds a certain cycle.

  • In this study, the three-dimensional finite element method is used to analyze the behavior of corner cracks in finite-thickness plates repaired with a composite patch. The normalized stress intensity factor at the crack front is used as fracture criterion. Comparison of stress intensity factor values at the internal and external positions of repaired quarter-elliptical corner crack was done, for three repair techniques. The influence of mechanical and geometrical properties of the adhesive layer and the composite patch on the variation of the stress intensity factor (SIF) at the crack-front was highlighted. The obtained results show that the application of double patch leads to a remarkable reduction of SIF at the crack front, compared to facial and lateral repairs.

  • To study the effects of corner braces on fatigue performance of the U-rib and roof weld in steel bridge decks, the fatigue experiment was carried out to compare characteristics of the crack shape with and without corner braces. The improvement of fatigue life and stress variation after setting corner braces were also analysed. Different parameters of corner brace sizes, arrangements, and detail types were considered in the FEM models to obtain stress distribution and variation at the weld. Furthermore, enhancement of the fatigue performance by corner braces was evaluated. The results demonstrated that the corner brace could improve the fatigue life of the U-rib and roof weld, which exerted even no influence on the crack shape. Moreover, stress of the roof weld was decreased and the crack position was transferred from the root weld to U-rib and corner brace weld. It was suggested no weld scallop should be drilled on the corner brace. A transverse rib with lower height which was set between U-ribs was favourable for improvement of fatigue performance.

  • It is conducted that study on corner crack protection for various thermal environment in a flat panel display. Most of the consumer electronics consist of a plastic and a metal structure. And different properties of materials could cause failure of structural reliability due to the various operating temperatures. Especially for front bezel with thin and slender structure, the effect of temperature is significant, and the design for crack protection is crucial for thermal reliability of displays. In this study, it is prescribed the behavior of the front bezel in flat panel display for various operation temperatures and proposed design parameters to ensure the structural reliability of displays.

  • Recently with the rapid development in marine and shipbuilding industries such as marine structures, ships and chemical plants, it takes much interest in the study of corrosion fatigue characteristics that was close up an important role in mechanical design. In this study, characteristics of corner crack propagation on the base metal and heat affected zone of 5086 Al-Alloy was tested by using of a rotary bending fatigue tester and was investigated under the environments of specific resistance, $\rho$=25$\Omega$ cm and air. The corrosion fatigue crack initiation and corrosion fatigue life sensitivity were quantitatively inspected for 5086 Al-Alloy in the specific resistance, $\rho$=25$\Omega$ cm. Main results obtained are as follows: (1) The corrosion sensitivity of heat affected zone under specific resistance, $\rho$=25$\Omega$cm shows approximately 1.69~2.22 and corrosion sensitivity of base metal is more susceptible than that of heat affected zone. (2) The corrosion fatigue life sensitivity on heat affected zone decreases eminently than that of initial corrosion fatigue crack. (3) The characteristics of quarter elliptical corner crack propagation shows that depth crack is more grown than surface crack at crack initiation, but the surface crack is more propagated than depth crack as the crack propagation is increased. (4) The surface crack and depth crack growth on heat affected zone by softness show delayed phenomenon than that of base metal.

  • There are two weak points in a high pressure vessel, one is a corner, the other is a crack on the base. In order to evaluate safety of a department of a corner and a crack like a starfish on the base in a high pressure vessel (working pressure: $130kg/cm^{2}$), which was made by Marison's Process, we analyzed stress by strain gauge, measured thickness and hardness by ultrasonic testing, and were able to test pressure by water pressure from nondestructive testing. Also destructive testings were applied to measure thickness and to observe microstructure and chemical composition of a corner on the base. From the results of the experiment, values of experiment were satisfied with a condition of application. But, it is considered that a crack on the base is to be investigated with more by Fracture Mechanics.

  • The butt lap joint structures which are usually designed by the concept of slow crack growth damage tolerance, show frequently the behaviors of multiple site fatigue crack growth around the fastener hole edges due to the fretting between the two jointed parts. In this paper, experimental tests of fatigue crack growth have been performed of a bolted butt lap joint structure having an initial corner crack at the fastener hole edge, with different fretting conditions under a flight load spectrum. The obtained test results were reviewed to investigate the effects of fretting fatigue cracks on the damage tolerance crack growth life. Computations of corner crack growth were also carried out using an existed model to compare with test results.
