This study was performed to determine the level of soybean meal (SM) or feather meal (FM) that could substitute for fish meal in fat cod(Hexagrammos otakii Jordan et Starks) diet. A control diet with fish meal as protein source was included. The amount of 5, 10, 15 and 20% of SM or FM substituted for fish meal in the control diet, respectively. Amino acids supplementation in the 20% SM diet was compared. In addition, combination of 5% SM, 5% corn gluten meal, 5% meat meal, 5% blood meal and 5% FM was substituted for fish meal in the control diet. Duplicate groups of the 40 fish averaging 21g were fed one of 11 isoproteic (45%) and isolipidic (15%) experimental diets to satiation twice a day for 2 months. No significant differences were found among fish fed the control, substituting up to 20% SM or 10% FM in weight gain, feed efficiency, daily feed intake, and protein efficiency ratio (P>0.05). It is concluded that SM or FM can be used as a partial substitute for fish meal up to 20% or 10% in the control diet, respectively.
This study was designed to determine the level of soybean meal (SM) that could be substituted for fish meal in the diet for Korean rockfish (Sebastes schlegeli). A control diet with white fish meal as only protein source was included, SM was substituted at levels of $5\%,\;10\%,\;15\%,\;and\;20\%$ for portions of the fish meal in the diet. Amino acids (met+lys) supplementation and two different SM particle sizes (0.5 mm and 0.25 mm) in the $20\%$ SM diet were compared. In addition, combination of $10\%$ SM, $10\%$ corn gluten meal (CGM) and $10\%$ meat and bone meal (MBM) was substituted for the fish meal in the diet. Duplicate groups of the 30 fish averaging 22.9 g were fed one of 8 isoproteic $(48\%)$and isolipidic $(7.5\%)$ experimental diets to satiation twice a day for 9 weeks. No significant differences were found among fish fed the control, substituting up to $20\%\;SM,\;20\%$ SM containing amino acids, and $10\%\;SM+10\%\;CGM+10\%$ MBM diets in weight gain, feed efficiency, daily feed intake, and protein retention (P>0.05). Feed efficiency, daily feed intake and protein retention in fish fed the diet containing $20\%$ SM with 0.5 mm particle size were not significantly different to those in fish fed the diets containing less than $20\%\;SM\;(P>0.05)$, however, weight gain was significantly lower than that of the control and $5\%\;SM\;diets\;(P<0.05)$. It is concluded that SM ran be used as a partial substitute for fish meal up to $20\%$ in the diet, and that the inclusion of SM with an adequate combination of several protein sources can replace larger amounts of fish meal in the diet.

A 15-week growth trial was conducted to evaluate the economical feed formulations for Korean rockfish (Sebastes sehlegeli). Three replicate groups of fish averaging 33 g were fed one of 8 isoproteic ($49\%$) and isolipidic ($8\%$) diets containing various practical ingredients such as fish meal, meat meal, feather meal, blood meal, soybean meal, corn gluten meal, and wheat flour with or without supplemental essential amino acids. A control diet with white fish meal and brown fish meal as the only protein sources was included. Practical ingredients were substituted from $40\%$ up to $65\%$ for portions of the fish meals in the control diet. Essential amino acids (EAA) were added to the diets for balancing EAA composition of each dietary protein source. In addition, these experimental diets were compared with raw fish-based moist pellet containing $50\%$ frozen horse mackerel and $50\%$ commercial binder meal. Results indicated that animal and plant protein sources could substitute for fish meal up to $55\%$ in diet without any adverse effects on growth and chemical composition of fish. Fish growth, body composition, nutrient utilization, and cost of fish production are discussed in relation to nutritional values of the dietary protein sources.

This study was conducted to evaluate the apparent ileal digestibility (AID) and standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of amino acids in feed ingredients for use as protein sources in swine feed. A total of six weaned pigs (Landrace×Yorkshire×Duroc, 14.4±0.35kg) surgically fitted with a T-cannula in the distal ileum were used in this study and were randomly allotted to a 6×6 Latin square design. Corn germ, corn gluten meal (CM), corn gluten feed (CF), chlorella (CH), and lysine co-product (LC) were used for evaluation, and the experimental periods of each ingredient included 5 days for adaptation and 2 days for collection. CH and LC had significantly higher (p<0.05) AID of lysine (79.1% and 78.7%, respectively). The AID of methionine was not significantly different among all feed ingredients. The AID of threonine of CH was significantly higher (p<0.05) than those of other ingredients and was 81.8%. CH, LC, and CM had higher (p<0.05) SID of lysine (80.4%, 79.5%, and 77.0%, respectively). The SID of methionine showed no difference among all treatments. CH showed 81.8% SID of threonine, which was significantly higher (p<0.05) than LC and CF. In conclusion, chlorella and lysine co-product showed the greatest AID and SID of amino acids, which makes them potentially valuable feed ingredients for use as protein sources in swine feed.

A 15-week growth trial was conducted in flow-through aquarium system to develop practical feeds for growing Korean rockfish. Two replicate groups of the fish averaging 114 g were fed one of nine diets containing $45\~50\%$ crude protein from various practical ingredients such as fish meal, meat meal, feather meal, blood meal, soybean meal, corn gluten meal, and wheat flour with or without supplemental essential amino acids (EAA) or enzyme mixture. The dietary EAA were adjusted by considering EAA composition of each dietary protein source, A/E ratio (each essential amino $acid\times1000/total$ essential amino arid including Cys and Tyr) calculated using Ah composition of the Korean rockfish whole body and the EAA requirement of other fish. Results indicate that animal and plant protein sources could substitute for fish meal up to $50\%$ in the diets, and the supplementation of amino acids and enzyme mixture have no beneficial effects on fish performance. Fish growth, body composition, nutrient utilization, and cost of fish production are discussed in relation to nutritional values of the protein sources used in diets.

Inclusion effect of soybean meal (SBM) and fermented SBM (FSM) in extruded pellet for juvenile abalone (Haliotis discus) was compared in abalone farm. Dietary inclusion effect of the combined macroalgae (MA) (Undaria pinnatifida and Hizikia fusiforme) and a single Saccharina japonica on abalone was also compared. Three thousand six hundred juvenile abalone were purchased from a private hatchery and acclimated to the experimental conditions for 2 weeks. Six 5-ton flow-through raceway tanks were used, and abalone were randomly distributed into tanks (n = 600 per tank). Three experimental diets were prepared in duplicate. Fish meal, FSM, corn gluten meal, and shrimp meal and wheat flour and dextrin were used as the protein and carbohydrate sources, respectively, in the FSM diet. MA was also included in the FSM diet. FSM and MA in the FSM diet were substituted with SBM at the expense of wheat flour and S. japonica, referred to as the SBM and SJ diets. The experimental diets were pelletized by an extruded pelleter. Water stability of nutrients in the experimental diets was monitored at 12, 24, and 48 h after seawater immersion. The experimental diets were fed to abalone once a day to satiation with a little leftover for 120 days. The retained crude protein and lipid and ash content of the extruded pellets were changed over all period of time. Weight gain and specific growth rate (SGR) of abalone fed the SBM diet were greater than those of abalone fed the FSM and SJ diets. Weight gain and SGR of abalone fed the SJ diet were also greater than those of abalone fed the FSM diet. The longest shell length, widest shell width, highest shell height, and greatest soft body weight were obtained in abalone fed the SBM diet, followed by the SJ and FSM diets. Proximates of the soft body of abalone were not different among the experimental diets. In conclusion, SBM was a superior protein source to FSM in extruded pellet for growth performance of abalone. Dietary inclusion of a single S. japonica was superior to the combined inclusion of U. pinnatifida and H. fusiforme in the production of abalone.
An 18-week growth trial was conducted in flow-through aquarium system to evaluate the practical dietary protein sources for juvenile abalone (Haliotis discus hannai). Three replicate groups of the abalone averaging 0.11g were fed one of ten diets containing casein, white fish meal (WFM), meat meal (MM), feather meal (FM), blood meal (BM), soybean meal (SM), corn gluten meal (CGM), cotton seed meal (CSM), Undaria powder (UP), or wheat flour (WF) as a dietary protein source. In addition, these dietary protein sources were cmpared with algae such as raw Undaria or dried Laminaria. Weight gain of abalone fed the diets containing casein, WFM, SM, CSM, or UP was significantly higher (P<0.05) than those of abalone fed other diets, and this value of abalone fed FM, BM, CGM, or algae was lower than other groups. Shell length, shell width, body wt./shell length ratio, and body wt./shell width ratio of abalone fed casein, WFM, SM, CSM, UP, and WF were also highe (P<0.05) than those of other groups. There were no significant difference (P>0.05) in moisture and protein contents of soft body among all diets. The data obtained in this study indicate that each of the casein, WFM, SM, CSM or UP is good dietary protein source for juvenile abalone.
A 15-week of growth trial was conducted to evaluate practical diets for growing Korean rockfish (Sebastes schlegeli). Two replicate groups of the fish average weighing 125 g were fed one of four experimental diets containing $41\~45\%$ protein and $6\~8\%$ lipid. A control diet with $58\%$ fish meal as protein source was included and practical form diets with $40\%$ fish meal and various practical ingredients such as meat meal, blood meal, soybean meal, and corn gluten meal were included. These experimental dry pellet diets were compared with commercial diets containing $51\~53\%$ protein and $5\~13\%$ lipid for marine fish or raw fish-based moist pellet (RMP) diet containing $58\%$ protein and $9\%$ lipid consisted of $50\%$ frozen horse mackerel and $50\%$ commercial binder meal. Weight gain, feed efficiency, daily feed intake and protein efficiency ratio in the fish fed the experimental diets and commercial diets were not significantly different to those in the fish fed the control diet. However weight gain, feed efficiency and protein efficiency ratio in the fish fed the RMP diet were significantly higher than those in the fish fed the experimental diets and commercial diets. These differences of growth performance between experimental diets and RMP diet may be reason for different dietary protein and energy levels. The experimental diet can save up to $20\%$ cost of fish production compare with control diet, whereas RMP diet is more expensive than other diets in the fish production.
Antifungal compound, KRF-001, was produced by Bacillus subtilis subsp. krictiensis isolated from soil. Physico-chemical factors affecting cell growth and bioactivity were examined to improve the production yield. Nutrient composition, temperature, pH and phosphate ion concentration were proved to be important factors for the production of KRF-001. Mutation was performed to select high yielding strains. First, mutation was performed with ultra-violet light, and the second mutation process was conducted by MNNG (N-Methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine) resulting in three high yielding strains.
Most medium formulations for improving culture of entomopathogenic nematodes (EPN) based on protein sources have used enriched media like animal feed such as dried egg yolk, lactalbumin, and liver extract, among other ingredients. Most results, however, showed unstable yields and longer production time. Many of the results do not show the detailed parameters of fermentation. Soy flour, cotton seed flour, corn gluten meal, casein powder, soytone, peptone, casein hydrolysates, and lactalbumin hydrolysate as protein sources were tested to determine the source to support optimal symbiotic bacteria and nematode growth. The protein hydrolysates selected did not improve bacterial cell mass compared with the yeast extract control, but soy flour was the best, showing 75.1% recovery and producing more bacterial cell number ($1.4{\times}10^9$/ml) than all other sources. The highest yield ($1.85{\times}10^5$ IJs/ml), yield coefficient ($1.67{\times}10^6$ IJs/g medium), and productivity ($1.32{\times}10^7$ IJs/l/day) were also achieved at enriched medium with soybean protein.
