  • This paper presents a method of constructing a large interlinked ontology network for the Web of Data through the mapping among typical ontologies. When an ontology is open to the public, and more easily shared and used by people, its value is increased more and more. By linking CoreOnto, an IT core ontology constructed in Korea, to the worldwide ontology network, CoreOnto can be open to abroad and enhanced its usability. YAGO is an ontology constructed by combining category information of Wikipedia and taxonomy of WordNet, and used as the backbone of DBpedia, an ontology constructed by analyzing Wikipedia structure. So a mapping method is suggested by linking CoreOnto to YAGO and DBpedia through the synset of WordNet.

  • For the purpose of building domain ontology, this paper proposes a methodology for building core ontology first, and then enriching the core ontology with the concepts and relations in the domain thesaurus. First, the top-level concept taxonomy of the core ontology is built using domain dictionary and general domain thesaurus. Then, the concepts of the domain thesaurus are classified into top-level concepts in the core ontology, and relations between broader terms (BT) - narrower terms (NT) and related terms (RT) are classified into semantic relations defined for the core ontology. To classify concepts, a two-step approach is adopted, in which a frequency-based approach is complemented with a similarity-based approach. To classify relations, two techniques are applied: (i) for the case of insufficient training data, a rule-based module is for identifying isa relation out of non-isa ones; a pattern-based approach is for classifying non-taxonomic semantic relations from non-isa. (ii) For the case of sufficient training data, a maximum-entropy model is adopted in the feature-based classification, where k-NN approach is for noisy filtering of training data. A series of experiments show that performances of the proposed systems are quite promising and comparable to judgments by human experts.

  • The core of the semantic web is ontology, which supports interoperability among semantic web applications and enables developer to reuse and share domain knowledge. It used a variety of fields such as Information Retrieval, E-commerce, Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence and Bio-informatics. However, the reality is that various errors might be included in conceptual hierarchy when developing ontologies. Therefore, methodologies and supporting tools are essential to help the developer construct suitable ontologies for the given purposes and to detect and analyze errors in order to verify the inconsistency in the ontologies. In this paper we propose a new approach for ontology error detection based on the Concept Lattices of Formal Concept Analysis. By using the tool that we developed in this research, we can extract core elements from the source code of Ontology and then detect some structural errors based on the concept lattices. The results of this research can be helpful for ontology engineers to support error detection and construction of "well-defined" and "good" ontologies.

  • The core study of semantic web is the efficiency of ontology parsing. The ontology parsing and inference is based on the significant information retrieval which is the ultimate purpose of semantic web. However, most existing ontology writing tools were not processing the efficient ontology parsing. Therefore, we design the two steps ontology parser for extracting the all facts, are included in the ontology, more fast in this study. In the first step, the token extractor collects the all tokens of ontology and the triple extractor extracts the statements in the collected tokens. In conclusion, we confirm that which is designed in this study, processes the ontology parsing more faster than the existing ontology parsers.

  • An ontology as the core element of Semantic Web is a formal specification of a conceptualization of shared domain knowledge. The use of well-defined ontologies can increase the quality of interoperable information systems in the area of Semantic Web. However, in practice, it is not easy to develop high-quality ontologies which have no errors. Therefore, with methodologies for ontology design, various methods or tools for ontology analysis supporting for error-detection might be very helpful for ontology developers. In this paper, we propose a novel approach for analyzing the core constructs of ontology based on the Formal Concept Analysis and develop a tool that supports error-checking ontologies. Our approach can serve not only as a guidance to modify the existing ontologies, but also as a valuable tool in developing high-quality ontologies.

  • We can organize, manage, search, and process the documents efficiently by a document clustering. In general, the documents are clustered in a high dimensional feature space because the documents consist of many terms. In this paper, we propose a new method to cluster the documents efficiently in a low dimensional feature space by finding the core concepts from a domain ontology corresponding to the particular area documents. The experiment shows that our clustering method has a good performance.

  • World Wide Web is not more meaningless sea of information but is becoming the Semantic Web that provides many users with meaningful information. The starting point is the XML and metadata, RDF is a stopover which gives technique to relate arbitrary web resources. And now, the semantic and logic of web resources can be settled in the Ontology. A lot of educational multimedia web resources in Korea have produced their metadata with KERIS's KEM(Korea Educational Metadata). Therefore our country have to start the study of the semantic and logic in web resources. But, many researchers in Korea are more eager to study Dublin Core's DC and SCORM's LOM metadata specification than KEM. Thus the study of method about sharing and integrating these three metadata specifications should be performed before the study of semantic and logic in web resources in Korea. We design the Ontology to integrate these three metadata specifications and implement the prototype system using this Ontology. These three metadata have some elements that have same labels and meanings, and other elements have different labels and same meanings. To match these different labels which have same meanings, we adapted the one-to-one mapping technique in designing our Ontology. This designed Ontology was imported as "integrated schema" in our prototype searching system to integrate three different metadata in databases. Moreover we know that the more specific property design of class in Ontology was needed in order to provide users with more informed searching results such as synonym, antonym, hierarchy and associations.

  • The standard metadata systems are very popular for the description of structures and semantics of information resources to realize sharing and exchanging information in global ubiquitous environment. In real application domain, various metadata elements are reused together with mix-and-match manner. An application system using diverse metadata systems is compelled with refinement and interoperability of metadata elements. Application profile is the general approach to resolve the various problems occurred in metadata application systems. This paper proposes Application Profile Core Ontology (APO) that can achieve the goals and functions of application profile, and describes metadata application system based on APO.

  • Nowadays, the study on e semantic web has been actively progressing for processing the web data semantically. For actualizing the semantic web environment, the core task is to build the ontology that defines the concepts and relations between concepts about the all things. Many ontology languages such as OWL, RDF(S), DAML+OIL were developed for building the ontology. And the many ontology tools were also implemented based on them. Although, many language and tools were researched, the practical use of the ontology tools is limited to the experts and researchers about the ontology because of the difficulty of the vocabulary, weak understanding about the ontology theory and the difficulty of the use of the ontology tools. And there are no studies on the reuse of constructed huge ontology. Therefore, in our study we design and implement the OWL ontology management tool that both the ontology experts and general users who want to build the ontologies are able to construct the ontology easily In this paper, we introduce the main modules used in our tool and features of our tool.

  • Background: To describe domain knowledge consistently and precisely, the establishment of a controlled vocabulary, a so-called ontology, is essential. Internationally, the plant ontology (PO) in the ecology field has been developed for the anatomy and developmental stages of plants in English, Spanish, and Japanese, but there is no Korean version of the PO due to a lack of knowledge on standardization for Korean plants. Objectives: We aimed to establish a Korean plant ontology with core PO architectures. Methods: The latest ontology web language (OWL)-formatted raw version of the PO was collected from the PO consortium site. A formal workflow process and OWL file-handing tools for efficient Korean content development were conducted and executed. Results: The macro- and micro-perspective frameworks of the PO were presented by analyzing the upper model and the internal OWL-leveled physical structure, respectively. We developed and validated Korean knowledge content for a total of 1,957 classes included in the PO and transplanted them into an ontology modeling system. Conclusions: A Korean plant ontology was established for international harmonization through improved compatibility and data exchangeability with multilingual environmental and ecological knowledge bases.
