  • This paper reports the facile synthesis of microlamella-structured porous copper (Cu)-oxide-based electrode and its potential application as an advanced anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Nanowire-like Cu oxide, which is created by a simple thermal oxidation process, is radially and uniformly formed on the entire surface of Cu foam that has been fabricated using a combination of water-based slurry freezing and sintering (freeze casting). Compared to the Cu foil with a Cu oxide layer grown under the same processing conditions, the Cu foam anode with 63% porosity exhibits over twice as much capacity as the Cu foil (264.2 vs. 131.1 mAh/g at 0.2 C), confirming its potential for use as an anode electrode for LIBs.

  • In order to measure the minute amount of Cu(II) in our environment, cyclic voltammetry (CV) and square-wave stripping voltammetry (SWSV) were performed for a trace copper assay using bismuth immobilized on a carbon nanotube paste electrode. An analytical working range of 30 to $240{\mu}g/L$ Cu(II) was obtained for CV and SWSV. The SWSV precision obtained was 0.47 % (n = 15) RSD in $30.0{\mu}g/L$ Cu(II). The detection limit obtained was 3.1 ng/L Cu(II) using SWSV, while the CV yielded the nano-range detection limit through the pre-concentration step. By using this research method, Cu(II) value could be determined in the urine of human sample and in the brain of fish sample. This research can be effectively applied to other cases of measuring minute amount of Cu(II) in living organisms.

  • Copper phthalocyanine(CuPc) thick film solar cells were fabgricated byspin coating and their photovoltaic behavior was studied. Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVdF) was used for the binder. Aluminum and indium were employed as electrode metals to form Schottky contact to CuPc layer. The cells showed rectifying J-V characteristics in the dark and photovoltaic effect associated with white light irradiation. The photovoltaic performance of the cells strongly depended on contact metals, in which the formation of oxide layer between binder layer and electrode interface affected the solar cell. Influnce of the CuPc layer thickness, CuPc/PVdF ratio on the photovoltaic performance of the cells were also examined.

  • Heavy metals such as Cu, Ni, Cd, and Pb were chemically extract from the contaminated soils using the chelating agents, EDTA and DTPA. These chemical extraction have been focused on its applicability to a wide range of soils. Results of extractive efficiency for heavy metal follow the order : Cu-EDTA $\geq$ Ni-EDTA > Pb-EDTA > Cd-EDTA > Cu-DTPA> Pb-DTPA. This result is coincided with order of conditional formation constants(Kr) of metal-chelate agent. The second study involved the recovery of the metals and EDTA from complex solutions by an electromembrane process. The overall processes of regeneration, recovery, and reuse were evaluated. The electrochemical studies showed that copper could be chosen as an electrode to plate Cd, Cu, and Pb. At least 95% of 75 of EDTA and associated Cu or Pb could be recovered by the electromembrane process. Recovery of Cd by electodeposition was not possible with the copper electrode. The percent EDTA recovery is equal to the percentage of metal electroplated from the chelates.

  • Grounding insures a reference potential point for electric devices and also provides a low resistance path for fault currents in the earth. The ground impedance as a function of frequency is necessary for determining its performance since fault currents could contain a wide range of frequencies. A cower rod electrode is the most commonly used grounding electrode in electric distribution systems. In this paper, the ground impedance of cower rods has been measured in frequency ranging from 60[Hz] up to 100[kHz] and an equivalent circuit model, transfer function model of the ground impedance are identified from the measured values.

  • In this study, the effect of electrolyte addition on the removal of organics and nutrients in electrochemical wastewater using a copper electrode, and the characteristics of the by-product of electrolysis were investigated. The removal of organics increased significantly as shorter reaction times upon the addition of chloride ion, and most of the electrolysis reaction was completed within 20 min. The reaction rate gradually increased in proportion to the $Cl^-$/COD ratio, whereas the highest removed mass of organic matter per mass of added electrolyte was observed at a $Cl^-$/COD ratio of 1. After the addition of electrolyte, significant removal of ammoniacal nitrogen was observed as a result of the enhanced generation of oxidizers such as hypochlorite. Excellent phosphorus removal was also achieved in a very short reaction time (within 2 min) by electro-coagulation. As the electrolysis progressed, the amount of by-product increased gradually, whereas a decrease of sludge volume index was observed after the addition of electrolyte. This indicated that the settling performance of the by-products was better, and their removal would be easily achieved.

  • Biofilms of oral microbes can cause various diseases in the oral cavity, such as dental caries, periodontitis and mucosal disease. Electrolyzed water generated by an electric current passed via water using a metal electrode has an antimicrobial effect on pathogenic bacteria which cause food poisoning. This study investigated the antimicrobial activity of electrolyzed waters using various metal electrodes on the floatage and biofilms of oral microbes. The electrolyzed water was generated by passing electric current using copper, silver and platinum electrodes. The electrolyzed water has a neutral pH. Streptococcus mutans, Porphyromonas gingivalis and Tannerella forsythia were cultured, and were used to form a biofilm using specific media. The floatage and biofilm of the microbes were then treated with the electrolyzed water. The electrolyzed water using platinum electrode (EWP) exhibited strong antimicrobial activity against the floatage and biofilm of the oral microbes. However, the electrolyzed water using copper and silver electrodes had no effect. The EWP disrupted the biofilm of oral microbes, except the S. mutans biofilm. Comparing the different electrolyzed waters that we created the platinum electrode generated water may be an ideal candidate for prevention of dental caries and periodontitis.

  • Cu-Ti thin films were fabricated using a combinatorial sputtering system to realize highly sensitive surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices. The Cu-Ti sample library was grown with various chemical compositions and electrical resistivity, providing important information for selecting the most suitable materials for SAW devices. Considering that acoustic waves generated from piezoelectric materials are significantly affected by the resistivity and density of interdigital transducer (IDT) electrodes, three types of Cu-Ti thin films with different Cu contents were fabricated. The thickness of the Cu-Ti thin films used in the SAW-IDT electrode was fixed at 150 nm. As the Cu content of the Cu-Ti films was increased from 31.2 to 71.3 at%, the resistivity decreased from 10.5 to 5.8 × 10-5 ohm-cm, and the density increased from 5.5 to 7.3 g/cm3, respectively. A SAW device composed of Cu-Ti IDT electrodes resonated at exactly 143 MHz without frequency shifts, but the full width at half maximum (FWHM) values of the resonant frequency gradually increased as the Cu content increased. This means that although the increase in Cu content in the Cu-Ti thin film helps to improve the electrical properties of the IDT electrode, the increased density of the IDT electrode deteriorates the acoustic performance of SAW devices.
