  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare self-care behavior, diabetes-related stress and stress coping style among 3 blood glucose control groups (good, inadequate, and poor blood glucose control groups). Methods: Participants were 102 type 2 diabetic patients (good group: 41, inadequate group: 31, poor group: 30). Data were collected from Feb 19 to Mar 24, 2010 and were analyzed using Chi-square, Fisher's exact test and ANCOVA with SPSS/WIN 12.0. Results: Using ANCOVA with frequency of admission, and illness duration as covariates, significant differences were found among the 3 groups in self-care behavior (total score) and the exercise subscale. Using ANCOVA significant differences were found among 3 groups in diabetes-related stress (total score), emotional burden subscale and regimen distress subscale. Using ANCOVA no difference in stress coping was found among the 3 groups, but there was a significant difference in the problem-oriented coping subscale. Conclusions: Self-care behavior, diabetes-related stress, and stress coping style are factors influencing blood glucose control. The results of this study suggest that for improving blood glucose control, self care education program focused on diet and exercise in addition to stress management program for promoting problem oriented coping capability are recommended.

  • Objectives: Interpersonal stress is a major cause and aggravating factor of Hwabyung. The purpose of this study was to compare communication type and stress coping style between the Hwabyung patients group and non-Hwabyung patients group. Methods: The total number of study participants was 101. Based on the Hwabyung symptom scale, the study participants were divided into Hwabyung patients group (30 patients) and non-Hwabyung patients group (43 patients; control group), and the others were excluded from the study . All included patients were administered the Virginia Satir’s communication type questionnaire and stress coping scale based on Folkman & Lazarus’s theory. The independent t-test was used to determine the statistical significance between the features of communication types and stress coping styles in each group. In addition, Spearman correlation analysis was used to identify the relationship between communication types and stress coping styles. Results and Conclusions: 1. Communication types differed significantly between the Hwabyung patients group and non-Hwabyung patients group. 2. Hwabyung patients scored significantly higher in each dysfunctional communication type than functional communication type. Scores of placating stance and super-reasonable stance, which were subtypes of dysfunctional communication type, were high in the Hwabyung patients group. The non-Hwabyung patients group scored the highest in Congruent stance, classified as functional communication type. 3. Stress coping style was not significantly different between the two groups.

  • As the immigrant population is rapidly growing in South Korea, it is important for the next generation of Korean adolescents to foster unprejudiced attitudes towards immigrants. This paper thus seeks to shed light on adolescent prejudice towards immigrants, by addressing the following three questions: (1) Does a mother's prejudice towards immigrants and parenting style influence their adolescent children's prejudice towards immigrants? (2) Does an adolescent's prejudice towards immigrants influence his/her self-identity? (3) Does an adolescent's prejudice towards immigrants influence his/her coping styles? The sample consisted of 288 pairs of Korean adolescents and their mothers. According to hierarchical regression analyses, a mother's prejudice towards immigrants significantly predicted her adolescent's prejudice towards immigrants, after taking sociodemographic variables into account, whereas her parenting style did not. In addition, having a low level of prejudice towards immigrants among adolescents predicted high levels of self-identity (e.g. independence, proprioceptive, and mission orientation), and a greater use of positive coping skills (e.g. support-seeking and problem-solving). Overall, results showed that mothers played a significant role in shaping their adolescent's prejudice towards immigrants. Results also provided evidence that prejudice towards immigrants may interfere with the healthy development of self-identity and coping style during adolescence. In conclusion, this study suggests that multicultural education for adolescents can be more effective, when it is provided in partnership with a parent education program that is designed to raise parental multicultural awareness.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the effect of positive psychological capital, empathy ability, and stress coping style on psychiatric ward nurses' compassion fatigue. Methods: Data were collected using structured questionnaires for 140 psychiatric ward nurses. The data were analyzed using t-test, one-way ANOVA, and hierarchical regression. Results: The variable predictors of compassion fatigue were as follows: positive psychological capital (β=-.35, p<.001), empathy ability (β=.32, p<.001), and passive coping (β=.25, p=.004). These factors explained 27% of compassion fatigue, and psychological capital was found to have the greatest influence among these variables. Conclusion: Positive psychological capital, empathy ability, and passive coping are important factors influencing nurses' compassion fatigue in psychiatric wards. It is necessary to develop interventions and appropriate coping styles that strengthen positive psychological capital to prevent and reduce nurses' compassion fatigue in psychiatric wards. In addition, it is necessary to identify the required level of empathy ability to maintain a therapeutic relationship.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of social support on suicidal ideation among the elderly at welfare centers through the mediating effect of avoidance coping style. This is a descriptive research survey of 392 elderly people at four elderly welfare centers located in G city. Data were collected from October 21 to November 8, 2019, and analyzed using the IBM SPSS/win 26.0 program by t-test, ANOVA, and the Pearson's correlation coefficient. The mediating effect was analyzed by multiple regression analysis according to Baron and Kenny's 3-step analysis procedure. Social support of the subjects was found to be high with an average score of 5.73±1.23, avoidance coping style with 12.53±3.47 points, and suicidal ideations with 6.21±2.06 points. In the correlation between the variables, suicidal ideations were negatively correlated with social support (r=-.146, p=.004) and avoidance coping style (r=.315, p<.001), and these correlations were statistically significant. There was a positive correlation. The avoidance coping style of the elderly using the welfare centers was found to partially mediate the relationship between social support and suicidal ideation (Z=-.270, p<.001). Therefore, to prevent negative emotions such as suicidal ideations in the elderly, various policies and support programs at the local and government level should be continuously implemented.
