The feasibility for improving the cooling rates and mechanical properties of wet welding process is experimentally investigated by using new developed underwater wet electrodes and H.T. steel plates. Main results of this experimental study can be summarized as follows; 1) By shielding around weld arc surrounding, the cooling rates resulting from wet welds with developed electrodes on TMCP steel plates can be lower than of non-shielded wet welds. 2)A high quality of mechanical properties of wet welds on TMCP steel plates can be obtained with shielded weld arc surrounding.
An closed cooling tower is a device similar to a general cooling tower, but with cooling tower replaced by a heat exchanger. The purpose of this study is to evaluate thermal performance of heat exchanger at various conditions and to provide design datebase. The experimental study regarding heat exchanger for closed cooling tower was conducted. Experimental apparatus consists of constant temperature bath, water pump, spray nozzle, heat exchanger, fan, and date acquisition system. Heat transfer rates at various air velocitys, water flow rates, two different spray modes were measured and heat transfer coefficient were calculated to compare the thermal performances. This study provides that the heat transfer coefficient increases with increasing spray water flow rate and with increasing air velocity. The wet mode was more effective than dry mode for closed cooling tower to this study.
In order to analyze the quantitative characteristics of acoustic streaming, experimental setup of 3-D stereoscopic PIV(particle imaging velocimetry) was designed and quantitative ultrasonic flow fields in the gap between the ultrasonic vibrator and heat source were measured. Utilizing acoustic streaming induced by ultrasonic vibration, surface temperature drop of cooling object was also measured. The study on smart cooling method by acoustic streaming induced by ultrasonic vibration was performed due to the empirical relations of flow pattern, average flow velocity, different gaps, and enhancement on cooling rates in the gap. Average velocity fields and maximum acoustic streaming velocity in the open gap between the stationary cylindrical heat source and ultrasonic vibrator were experimentally measured at no vibration, resonance, and non-resonance. It was clearly observed that the enhancement of cooling rates existed owing to the acoustic air flow in the gap at resonance and non-resonance induced by ultrasonic vibration. The ultrasonic wave propagating into air in the gap creates steady-state secondary eddy called acoustic streaming which enhances heat transfer from the heat source to encompassing air. The intensity of the acoustic streaming induced by ultrasonic vibration experimentally depended upon the gap between the heat source and ultrasonic vibrator. The ultrasonic vibration at resonance caused the increase of the acoustic streaming velocity and convective heat transfer augmentation when the flow fields by 3D stereoscopic PIV and temperature drop of the heat source were measured experimentally. The acoustic streaming velocity of air enhancement on cooling rates in the gap is maximal when the gap agrees with the multiples of half wavelength of the ultrasonic wave, which is specifically 12 mm.
In order to investigate the fluctuation rates [FR] of phytoplankton after passage through a cooling system, the standing crops, chlorophyll a concentrations and carbon assimilation number of phytoplankton were surveyed at intake and outlet at Wolsong nuclear power plant [NPP] from July 2006 to June 2008. As a result, the total mean standing crops of phytoplankton were $1.0{\times}10^6\;cells\;L^{-1}$ and $7.3{\times}10^5\;cells\;L^{-1}$ at intake and outlet, respectively. The FR of phytoplankton by passage through the cooling system [PTCS] was 27.0%. Among them, the FR of microplankton and nanoplankton were 34.1% and 12.4%, respectively. In addition, the FR of diatoms and dinoflagellateswere 33.9% and 29.7%, respectively. These results showed the entrainment effects on microplankton and diatoms by PTCS were higher than those of nanoplankton and dinoflagellates. The FR of total chlorophyll a concentrations were 54.4%, and the FR of microplankton, nanoplankton and picoplankton were 58.9%, 38.5%, and 52.4%, respectively. So the entrainment effects on microplankton by PTCS were higher than those of nanoplankton and picoplankton. The mean FR of carbon assimilation number of phytoplankton was 57.6%, and the seasonal variations of FR of carbon assimilation number ranged from 47.5% to 76.8%. Our results indicated that the phytoplankton species responded differently to power plant operating conditions such as elevated temperature, chlorination, and mechanical impacts.
The offshore industry created a need for quality wet weld repairs. Wet welding is a fast method of repair providing sound, structural quality welds. It requires less support equipment than a similar underwater dry weld repair or the alternative mechanical connections. Compared to welds made in air, underwater wet welds are plagued by increased hardness due to rapid quenching by the surrounding water. In this paper is described the experimntal study of improving the cooling rates of wet welds of TMCP steel plate by shielding around weld arc surroundings. The principal results of this experimental investigation can be summarized as follows : By shielding around weld arc surrounding, the cooling rates resulting from wet welds on TMCP steel plate could be lower than that of nonshielded wet welds and the fesibility on high quality of mecanical properties of wet weld on TMCP steel plate was carried out with shielded weld arc surrounding.
In the forming of an integrated system of radiant floor cooling and dehumidifying, chilled coil can be used for cooling and dehumidification. Therefore, it is necessary to find the efficient control method which can eliminates latent load efficiently. This study has been conducted to find this method by dividing the dehumidification system into 3 types according to the control variables and analyzing characteristics of each system. To prevent the floor surface condensation, the amount of condensation can be manipulated by water temperatures, water flow rates in chilled coil, and air flow rates passing by it. So dehumidification system control can be divided into constant air flow control and variable air flow control. Regarding dehumidification control, variable air flow control, which eliminates latent load rather than sensible load, is preferable to constant flow control.
The present study investigates the fire suppression characteristics using a water mist fire suppression system. The fire extinguishing times are measured for various fire sources, fuel types, and different total flooding rates of water mist. Pool fire with hydrocabon fuel is successfully extinguished within a minute under the operating conditions of the water mist system. Two different regimes of the smoke layer cooling are observed, such as rapid and slow cooling processes. The regimes are divided by threshold time which is calculated with auto-correlation function. The threshold time for the initial cooling decreases with increasing water flow-rates and fire sources. These initial cooling effects play an important role in preventing the occurance of flashover fire by the initial fire suppression.
The heat and mass transfer process between the falling liquid desiccant(TEG) film and the air in counter flow at the dehumidifier of desiccant cooling system were investigated. The governing equations with appropriate boundary and interfacial conditions describing the physical problems were solved by numerical analysis. As a result, the effects of the design parameters and the outside air conditions on the rates of dehumidification and sensible cooling were discussed. The results of the dehumidification and sensible cooling rates were compared with those of the cross flow at the same conditions.
The effects of the alloying elements and cooling rates on the formation of phosphide eutectics of compacted vermicular graphite cast irons containing copper, tin, molybdenum for producing pearlitic matrix, and also containing phosphorus and boron for increasing wear resistance, were investigated. The liquidus phosphide eutectic was found to solidify as a pseudo-binary phosphide eutectic, but with increasing of the cooling rate non-equlibrium phosphide eutectic with needle type carbide could be formed. However, the liquidus phosphide eutectic containing both phosphorus and carbide-forming boron was found to solidify always as a non-equlibrium phosphide eutectic with coarse carbide, independent from the cooling rate. It was also confirmed that the tiny isolated phase observed by SEM was gamma iron solid solution with phosphorus, silicon, molybdenum and the matrix containing these tiny islands was phosphide phase containing manganese and molybdenum. The addition of copper was found to decrease the tendency of forming ledeburitic carbides in the phosphide eutectic.
An experimental study has been conducted to measure the temperature fields and the local film cooling effectiveness for two and three staggered rows of the rectangular shaped-holes with various blowing rates. The hydraulic diameter of rectangular-shaped hole is 10mm. To compare with the film cooling performance of rectangular-shaped hole, two kinds of circular holes are tested. One has the same hydraulic diameter as the rectangular hole and the other has the same cross sectional area. Also, rectangular holes with expanded exit with same inlet area as rectangular ones are tested. Temperature fields are measured using a thermocouple rake attached on three-axis traversing system. Adiabatic film cooling effectiveness on the surface are obtained based on experimental results of thermochromic liquid crystals. The film cooling effectiveness is measured for various blowing rates and compared with the results for the cylindrical holes. In case of 2 rows, the rectangular holes has better performance than circular holes due to its slot-like geometry. In case of 3 rows, the effecta of hole shape is not clear.
