  • The removal efficiencies of 2-methylisoborneol (MIB) and geosmin were investigated to reveal removal characteristics of typical organic compounds causing disagreeable taste and odor at the conventional water treatment plant installed with pulsator clarifier patented by the French company $Degr{\acute{e}}mont$. The injection rate of Powdered Activated Carbon (PAC) into water was changed step wisely as we conducted jar tests in the laboratory and water treatment in the actual plant. 2-MIB concentration decreased linearly while geosmin did exponentially along with the injection rate of PAC at our jar tests. The removal efficiency of geosmin by PAC injection was considerably higher than that of 2-MIB. In the real pulsator clarifier, 2-MIB concentration started decreasing as the injection rate reached up to 10 mg/L of PAC. On the other hand, the concentration of geosmin in water decreased proportional to the injection rate of PAC. In the sand filtration, removal efficiencies of 2-MIB and geosmin on July were much higher than those on March. It was carefully suggested beforehand and found afterwards that general microorganisms notably existed in the sand filter with no chlorine in filter influent and backwash water and the sand filter biologically activated removed much more odor compounds. It was considered as the reason why the removal efficiency of 2-MIB and geosmin was increased. The microbial activity maybe increased in summer with water temperature rising and low filtration rate possibly increased contact time between odor compounds and general microorganisms.

  • A study was performed to examine the effects of reclaimed-water irrigation on microorganism con-centration in ponded-water of paddy rice plots. Several treatments were used and each one was triplicated to evaluate the change of indicator microorganisms (total coliforms (TC), fecal coliforms FC), and E. coli) concentrations in 2003 and 2004 growing seasons. Their concentrations increased significantly right after irrigation, but decreased about $45\%$ in 24 hours. It implies that agricultural activities such as plowing and fertilizing should be practiced one or two days after irrigation considering health-risks. Treatments with UV-disinfected water irrigation demonstrated significantly lower concentrations than others including control plots where natural surface water was irrigated. The monitoring results from actual paddy rice fields and experimental paddy plots showed that concentrations of indicator microorganisms ranged from $10^2\;to\;10^5$ MPN/100mL. A comprehensive assessment of existing agricultural practices and a thorough monitoring in the field as well as treatment-plots are recommended to make more realistic national guidelines more applicable. UV-disinfected water irrigation reduced microorganism concentrations in paddy fields down to below the concentration of conventional paddy rice culture, and is thought to be an effective and feasible measure fur agricultural reuse of secondary effluent.

  • The results of investigation on the water quality of the unit watersheds in the Yeongsang/Seomjin River indicate that $BOD_5$, SS, T-P decrease in most of the unit watersheds. However, $COD_{Mn}$ and T-N increase since the Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs). It is thought that $COD_{Mn}$, which is included non-biodegradable matters, is difficult to decrease only using by conventional biological treatment facilities and T-N is affected by non-point source, etc. The results of assessment on 3 years $BOD_5$ indicate that most of the unit watersheds were being improved except Yeongbon A, Seombon C and Yocheon B. In addition, it was found that T-P were also being improved except Yocheon B and Hwangryeong A. Consequently, water qualities of the unit watersheds have been improved in many cases since the TMDLs.

  • In the present study, we evaluated the efficiency of the drinking water treatment unit processes controlled by targeting high pharmaceutical compounds that are likely to be released into the water supply. In the coagulation process, the removal rate of sulfonamide, an antibiotic, amounted to 22.6~42.1 %, that of naproxen to 28.2 %, and that of acetaminophen to 20 %. Trimethoprim has demonstrated a low removal rate (4.4 %), while the removal rate of erythromycin was 2.4 %; aspirin was not removed at all. When applying a mixture of chlorination and the coagulation process, the removal rate was increased with increasing the chlorine dosage. When the chlorine injection with the concentration of 3 mg/L was applied, sulfonamide antibiotics, acetaminophen and naproxen, were completely removed. Trimethoprim exhibited a high removal efficiency of ca. 98%, while the removal efficiency of erythromycin was about 55 %; at the same time, aspirin showed a lower removal ratio (ca. 10 %). When applying the powdered activated carbon adsorption process, the removal rate was increased with increase of the concentration of the powder activated carbon injection. Sulfonamide antibiotics showed about 18~50 % removal efficiency in the 1 mg/L, the removal rate was increased by at least 80 % in 25 mg/L. The evaluation results of the titration injection concentration of chlorine treatment and adsorption, coagulation process for the efficient processing of the remaining pharmaceutical compounds in the water treatment process, when applying the chlorine 3 mg/L, powdered activated carbon 10 mg/L and coagulant 15 mg/L were removed more than 90 %.

  • The effect of short term duration(1, 2 and 3 days) after urea foliar spray on leaf quality was investigated by chemical analysis of leaves and silkworm rearing with leaves treated with urea in autumn. Foliar spray increased water content by 0.4~0.7% and total nitrogen by 0.19~0.51% in leaves compared to the conventional treatment. Foliar spray increased NO3-N concentration in leaf 503~1107 ppm more than the conventional treatment. NO3-N concentration in leaf decreased with days after foliar spray. Whole cocoon weight and cocoon shell weight increased by 0.02~0.14g and 0.5~3.1 cg, respectively in foliar spray than in the conventional treatment. Though foliar spray raised NO3-N concentration in leaf, leaves harvested one day after foliar spray were no harmful to silkworm.

  • There is no certain definition about advanced drinking water treatment but it is generally known as activated carbon process, membrane process or ozone process which can remove non-conventional pollutants such as taste and odor compounds, and micro-pollutants. There are more than 20 processes related to activated carbon as adsorber or biological activated carbon in Korea. The saturated carbon by pollutants can be reused by reactivation. However, the effect of reactivation on activated carbon is not well-understood in terms of changing physical properties of carbon to adsorption capacity of natural organic matter (NOM). In this study, the effects of reactivation on physical properties of activated carbon were investigated by isotherm and breakthrough of NOM. Ash content was increased from 8% to 13.3%. Iodine number is commonly used as an indicator for performance of reactivation. The iodine number was decreased about 20% after reactivating twice. The degree of reactivation can be evaluated by not only iodine number but also apparent density.

  • Acetic acid can be removed from wastewater by esterification in a membrane reactor. Pervaporation membrane reactor (PVMR) is an alternative process to conventional separation processes. It is an environmentally friendly process. The main advantages of the PVMR are simultaneous water removal and production of an ester economically. In this study, the synthetic wastewater has been used. Esterification reaction of acetic acid with isopropanol has been studied in the presence of tungstosilicic acid hydrate as a catalyst in a batch reactor and in a PVMR. The effects of important operating parameters such as reaction temperature, initial molar ratio of isopropanol to acetic acid and catalyst concentration has been examined. Removal of acetic acid (conversion of acetic acid) was obtained as 85% using a PVMR by removal of water from the reaction mixture.

  • Biological process have the potential to remove pollutants such as biodegradable organic fraction, $NH_3-N$, ABS, etc. that may be partially removed by conventional water treatment. This study was performed to evaluate four different processes of biological pretreatment as Biological Fluidized Bed(BFB), Biological Filter(BF), Rotating Biological Contactor(RBC) and Honey Comb(HC). In a given condition it proved out that BFB and BF are prospective biological pretreatment processes because they were the most effective on the removal of organic matter and ammonia. Preozonation of raw water for biological processes increased in biodegradable organic fraction about 10-40% with 0.425-0.85 mg $O_3/mg$ DOC.

  • Velvet deer antler (VDA) is well known oriental medicine claimed to have tonic activities as improving bone mineral density (BMD), immune-enhancing, rejuvenating and many other medicinal activities. Ossified deer antler (ODA) is bony product produced by over-calcification of deer antler due to late harvesting. The extraction efficiency of ODA by conventional boiling in water must be very poor due to bony nature, hence the reputations for the medicinal efficacies of ODA has been highly under-evaluated compared to that of VDA without any experimental evidences. Employing our new efficient water extraction process ($135^{\circ}C$), the extracts of ODA and VDA were analysed to compare the contents of bioactive components and the potencies of pharmacological activities. The results showed that; 1) The $135^{\circ}C$ extraction (autoclaving) of ODA gave highly increased amount of biomass, 120% more than the conventional extraction by 100-boiling, whereas the same treatment for VDA showed only 15% increased amount of biomass. 2) Feeding the ODA- or VDA-extracts to oophorectomized rats showed very potent BMD-recovering activity. 3) During the ossification of deer antler, the total collagen content was found to be increased by addition of type-1 to pre-existing type-2 collagen, but not replacement of type-2 to type-1 collagen. High titer of peptide hormones like growth hormone and IGF-1 were detected in the ODA- and VDA-extracts and also in the serum of ODA- or VDA-treated oophorectomized animals dose-dependently. Present experimental data will give a conclusion that folkloric poor reputations on ODA must be concerned only with poor extraction efficiency of conventional $100^{\circ}C$ water extraction and not based on the composition of bioactive substances of ODA.

  • The coupling of anaerobic biological process and membrane separation could provide excellent suspended solids removal and better biomass retention for wastewater treatment. This coupling improves the biological treatment process while allowing for the recovery of energy through biogas. This review gives a basic description of the anaerobic wastewater treatment process, summarizes the state of the art of anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AnMBRs), and describes the current research trends and needs for the development of AnMBRs. The research interest on AnMBR has grown over the conventional anaerobic processes such as upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB). Studies on AnMBRs have developed different reactor configurations to enhance performances. The AnMBR performances have achieved comparable status to other high rate anaerobic reactors. AnMBR is highly suitable for application with thermophilic anaerobic process to enhance performances. Studies indicate that the applications of AnMBR are not only limited to the high strength industrial wastewater treatment, but also for the municipal wastewater treatment. In recent years, there is a significant progress in the membrane fouling studies, which is a major concern in AnMBR application.
