In the high convective gas flow condition, irregular shaped water waves from which droplet entrainment occurs are generated under horizontally stratified two-phase flow condition. KAERI proposed a new mechanistic droplet entrainment model based on the momentum balance equation consisting of the shear stress, surface tension, and gravity forces. However, this model requires correlation or experimental data of several physical parameters related to the wave characteristics. In the present study, we tried to measure the physical parameters such as wave slope, wave hypotenuse length, wave velocity, wave frequency, and wavelength experimentally. For this, an experiment was conducted in the horizontal rectangular channel of which width, height, and length are, respectively, 40 mm, 50 mm, and 4.2 m. In the present test, the working fluids are chosen as air and water. The PIV technique was applied not only to obtain images for phase interface waves but also to measure the velocity field of the water flow. Additionally, we developed the parallel wire conductance probe for the confirmation of wave height from PIV image. Finally, we measured the physical parameters to be used in the validation of new droplet entrainment model.
The time-series resident solute concentrations, monitored at two field plots using the automated 144-channel TDR system by Kim (this issue), are used to investigate the dominant transport mechanism at field scale. Two models, based on contradictory assumptions for describing the solute transport in the vadose zone, are fitted to the measured mean breakthrough curves (BTCs): the deterministic one-dimensional convection-dispersion model (CDE) and the stochastic-convective lognormal transfer function model (CLT). In addition, moment analysis has been performed using the probability density functions (pdfs) of the travel time of resident concentration. Results of moment analysis have shown that the first and second time moments of resident pdf are larger than those of flux pdf. Based on the time moments, expressed in function of model parameters, variance and dispersion of resident solute travel times are derived. The relationship between variance or dispersion of solute travel time and depth has been found to be identical for both the time-series flux and resident concentrations. Based on these relationships, the two models have been tested. However, due to the significant variations of transport properties across depth, the test has led to unreliable results. Consequently, the model performance has been evaluated based on predictability of the time-series resident BTCs at other depths after calibration at the first depth. The evaluation of model predictability has resulted in a clear conclusion that for both experimental sites the CLT model gives more accurate prediction than the CDE model. This suggests that solute transport at natural field soils is more likely governed by a stream tube model concept with correlated flow than a complete mixing model. Poor prediction of CDE model is attributed to the underestimation of solute spreading and thus resulting in an overprediction of peak concentration.
Field scale experiments using an automated 144-channel TDR system were conducted which monitored the movement of solute through unsaturated loamy soils. The experiments were carried out on two different field plots of 0.54 ha to study the vertical movement of solute plume created by applying a square pulse of $CaCl_2$ as a tracer. The residence concentration was monitored at 24 locations on a transect and 5 depths per location by horizontally-positioning 50 cm long triple wire TDR probes to study the heterogeneity of solute travel times and the governing transport concept at field scale. This paper describes details of experimental methodology and calibration aspects of the TDR system. Three different calibration methods for estimation of solute concentration from TDR-measured bulk soil electrical conductivity were used for each field site. Data analysis of mean breakthrough curves (BTCs) and parameters estimated using the convection-dispersion model (CDE) and the convective-lognormal transfer function model (CLT) reveals that the automated TDR system is a viable technique to study the field scale solute transport providing a normal distribution of resident concentration in a high resolution of time series, and that calibration method does not significantly affect both the shape of BTC and the parameters related to the peak travel time. Among the calibration methods, the simple linear model (SLM), a modified version of Rhoades' model, appears to be promising in the calibration of horizontally-positioned TDR probes at field condition.
This study aimed to investigate the effects of various soft steam treatments, namely, forced convection-boiler, forced convection-fan, and natural convection, on the pretreatment characteristics of potatoes. In this study, potatoes were exposed to various cooking conditions, including steaming method, treatment time (0-60 min), and temperature (60, 70, $80^{\circ}C$). Then, changes in temperature, cook value, ascorbic acid content, moisture content, and weight loss in the fresh and steam-treated samples were measured and evaluated. The results clearly showed that natural convective steaming was superior to other treatments in terms of heating characteristics, cook value (FC-b: $46.4{\pm}1.7$, FC-f: $21.8{\pm}1.1$, NC: $52.1{\pm}1.9min$ at $80^{\circ}C$), ascorbic acid content (FC-b: $36.5{\pm}2.7$, FC-f: $28.5{\pm}2.9$, NC: $48.2%{\pm}2.5%$ at $80^{\circ}C$), moisture retention (FCb: $74.6{\pm}0.8$, FC-f: $71.5{\pm}0.5$, NC: $77.6%{\pm}0.4%$ for 60 min at $80^{\circ}C$), and weight loss (FC-b: $13.9{\pm}0.8$, FC-f: $15.6{\pm}0.6$, NC: $10.6%{\pm}0.7%$ for 60 min at $80^{\circ}C$) for thermally processed potatoes.
Brewer's spent grain (BSG) is a by-product of beer manufacturing. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of dietary fiber extracts from brewer's spent grain on quality characteristics of chicken patties. The total fiber content of BSG dietary fiber extracts after extraction increased from 58.11% to 68.57%, and the extracted dietary fiber extracts were added to chicken patties at 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4%, respectively. The effects of the BSG dietary fiber extracts on pH, color, cooking loss, reduction in patty diameter, salt-soluble protein solubility, texture, and sensory characteristics of chicken patties were evaluated. The addition of BSG dietary fiber extracts decreased pH and lightness values, and increased redness and yellowness. Chicken patties formulated with 3-4% BSG dietary fiber extracts had the lowest cooking loss among all treatments (p<0.05). The diameter of chicken patties was not affected by the addition of BSG dietary fiber extracts. Additionally, no significant difference was observed in salt-soluble protein solubility after adding 3% BSG dietary fiber extracts compared to that in the control. Textural and sensory properties were different among the chicken patties, and the 3% BSG dietary fiber-added chicken patty had the highest acceptability. Our results indicate that 3% BSG dietary fiber extract can be used as a good source of dietary fiber for improving the quality characteristics of chicken patties.

The evaporation heat transfer coefficient of $CO_2$ (R-744) in a horizontal tube was investigated experimentally. The main components of the refrigerant loop are a receiver, a variable-speed pump, a mass flow meter, a pre-heater and evaporator (test section). The test section consists of a smooth, horizontal stainless steel tube of inner diameter of 4.57mm. The experiments were conducted at mass flux of 400 to $900kg/m^2s$, saturation temperature of 5 to $20^{\circ}C$, and heat flux of 10 to $40kW/m^2$. The test results showed the heat transfer of $CO_2$ has a greater effect on nucleate boiling more than convective boiling. Mass flux of $CO_2$ does not affect nucleate boiling too much. In comparison with test results and existing correlations, All of the existing correlations for the heat transfer coefficient underestimated the experimental data. However Jung et al.'s correlation showed a good agreement with the experimental data. Therefore, it is necessary to develope accurate predictions determining the evaporation heat transfer coefficient of $CO_2$ in horizontal tubes.
The western equatorial Pacific Ocean, where sea surface temperature is the warmest on the globe, is characterized by numerous convective systems and large annual precipitation. In this region, the cloudiness data with tops higher than 8km level obtained from the GMS-IR data are used to investigate the diurnal variation of cloudiness. The amplitude and phase of diurnal and semi-diurnal cycles are mainly investigated to examine details on the temporal and spatial structure of clouds. Cloudiness variation has typical cycles and each cycle is associated with the air-sea interactive phenomena. Spectral analysis on the cloudiness time series data indicates that 30-60 day, 17-20day, 7-8 day, diurnal and semi diurnal cycle are peaked. During Northern Winter and Southern Summer, the large cloudiness exsists over New Guinea, the adjacent seas of North Australia, and the open oceanic regions east of $160^{\circ}$E. Cloudiness diurnal variability over the lands and their adjacent seas is about 2.0 times larger than that over the open sea regions. That may be due to the difference of specific heat between the land and sea. The maximum and minimum cloudiness appeared at 18:00 and 09:00 hours over the land, and at noon and 21:00 hours over the sea, respectively. The amplitude of diurnal component over the land is 4,7 times larger than that of semi-diurnal component, and 1.5 times over the sea.
Thermal energy transport in a two-dimensional horizontal and vertical channel with an isothermal rectangular beam attached to one adiabatic wall is investigated from the numerical solution of Navier-Stokes and energy equations. The solutions have been obtained for dimensionless aspect equations. The solutions have been obtained for dimensionless aspect ratios of beam, H/B=$0.25{sim}4$, Reynolds numbers, Re=$50{\sim}500$ and Grashof numbers, Gr=$0{\sim}5{\times}10^4$. The mean Nusselt number, $\overline{Nu}$ for horizontal and vertical channels shows same value at Gr=0 and increases as Gr increases and decreases as H/B increases at Re=100. $\overline{Nu}$ of vertical channel shows higher in $0.25{\leq}H/B<1.1$ and lower in $1.1{\leq}H/B{\leq}4.0$ than that of horizontal channel at $Gr=10^4$, Re=100. $\overline{Nu}$ of vertical channel shows higher in $0.25{\leq}H/B<1.1$ and lower in $1.1{\leq}H/B=1.0$ than that of horizontal channel at Re=100, $0<Gr{\leq}5{\times}10^4$. A comparison between the experimental and numerical results shows good agreement.

We employed a Multi-Angle Snowflake Camera (MASC) to quantitatively analyze snow particles at the ground level in the Yeongdong region of Korea. The MASC captures high-resolution photographs of hydrometeors from three angles and simultaneously measures fallspeed. Based on snowflake images of the several episodes in 2017 and 2018, we derived statistics of size, aspect ratio, orientation, complexity, and fallspeed of snow crystals, which generally showed similar characteristics to the previous studies in other regions of the world. Dominant snow crystal habits of January 22, 2018 generated by northerly were melted aggregates when 850 hPa temperature was about $-6{\sim}-8^{\circ}C$. Average fallspeed of snow crystals was $1.0m\;s^{-1}$ though its size gradually increased as temperature decreased. Another snowfall event (March 8, 2018) was driven by the baroclinic instability as accompanied with a deep trough. Snow crystal habits were largely rimed aggregates (complexity ~1.8) and melting particles of dark images. Meanwhile, in the extreme snowfall event whose snow rate was greater than $10cm\;hr^{-1}$ on January 20, 2017, main snow crystals appeared to be heavily rimed particles with relatively smaller size when convective clouds developed vertically up to 9 km in association with tropopause folding. MASC also could successfully measure a decrease in snow crystal size and an increase in riming degree after AgI seeding at Daegwallyeong on March 14, 2017.
Measurements of vertical air motion and microphysics are essential for improving our understanding of convective clouds. In this paper, the author reviews the current research on the retrieval of vertical air motions using the cloud radar. At radar wavelengths of 3 mm (W-band radar; 94-GHz radar; cloud radar), the raindrop backscattering cross-section (${\sigma}b$) varies between successive maxima and minima as a function of the raindrop diameter (D) that are well described by Mie theory. The first Mie minimum in the backscattering cross-section occurs at D~1.68 mm, which translates to a raindrop terminal fall velocity of ${\sim}5.85m\;s^{-1}$ based on the Gunn and Kinzer relationship. Since raindrop diameters often exceed this size, the signal is captured in the radar Doppler spectrum, and thus, the location of the first Mie minimum can be used as a reference for retrieving the vertical air motion. The Mie technique is applied to radar Doppler spectra from the surface-based and airborne, upward pointing W-band radars. The contributions of aircraft motion to the vertical air motion are also described and further the first-order aircraft motion corrected equation is presented. The review also shows that the separate spectral peaks due to the cloud droplets can provide independent validation of the Mie technique retrieved vertical air motion using the cloud droplets as a tracer of vertical air motion.
