  • Nowadays there has been great interest in using heat treated cast material for press dies due to several advantages like reduction in die production costs. However, in hot press forming processes H13 forged tool steel is mostly used. Cooling performance of dies in hot press forming processes is considered as an important factor of study and also the IHTC parameter between cast material die and sheet metal should be considered as an essential. In the present study, the IHTC was calculated for the sheet metal in the hot press forming process with cast and forged material dies. The temperature measurements were performed for the sheet metal, casting and forged material dies by applying various contact pressure in hot press forming. IHTC was calculated and studied by adopting the inverse heat convection method in DEFORM-2D. Each IHTC was considered as a function of contact time and contact pressure. The experimental data were compared with calculated data obtained from the proposed equation and references.

  • In-arm type hydropeumatic suspension unit(ISU) is an equipment of armed tracked vehicle to absorb impact load and vibration from the irregular ground. During the operation of ISU, main piston moves forward and backward and oil flowing through damper transmits the external impact load to floating piston. Heat is generated in ISU by the oil pressure drop through the damper orifice and the friction between cylinder wall and two pistons. On the other hand, internal heat dissipatis outside via heat convection. Occurrence of high temperature can deteriorate durability of major components and basic function of ISU. And, it can cause fatal problem in the ISU life time and the sealing performance of piston rings. As well, the spring constant change of nitrogen gas that is caused by the temperature rise exerts the negative effect to the vehicle stability. Therefore, in this paper, we analyze the heat transfer analysis of the entire ISU unit, by finite element method, with the outside flow velocities 8m/s and 10m/s.

  • The setting and hardening of concrete is accompanied with nonlinear temperature distribution caused by development of hydration heat of cement. Especially at early ages, this nonlinear distribution has a large influence on the crack evolution. As a result, in order to predict the exact temperature history in concrete structures it is required to examine thermal properties of concrete. In this study, the coefficient of air convection, which presents thermal transfer between surface of concrete and air, was experimentally investigated with variables such as velocity of wind and types of form. From experimental results, the coefficient of air convection was calculated using equations of thermal equilibrium. Finally, the prediction model for equivalent coefficient of air convection including effects of velocity of wind and types of form was theoretically proposed. The coefficient of air convection in the proposed model increases with velocity of wind, and its dependance on wind velocity is varied with types of form. This tendency is due to a combined heat transfer system of conduction through form and convection to air. From comparison with experimental results, the coefficient of air convection by this model was well agreed with those by experimental results.

  • Turbulent mixed convection in heated vertical annulus is investigated using Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) technique. The objective of this study is to find out the effect of buoyancy on turbulent mixed convection in heated vertical annulus. Downward and upward flows with bulk Reynolds number 8500, based on hydraulic diameter and mean velocity, have been simulated to investigate turbulent mixed convection by gradually increasing the effect of buoyancy. With increased heat flux, heat transfer coefficient first decreases and then increases in the upward flow due to the effect of buoyancy, but it gradually increases in downward flow. The mean velocity and temperature profiles can not be explained by the wall log laws due to the effect of buoyancy, too. All simulation results are in good quantitative agreement with existing numerical results and in good qualitative agreement with existing experimental results.

  • The design of a nuclear reactor core requires basic thermal-hydraulic information concerning the heat transfer regime at which onset of nucleate boiling (ONB) will occur, the pressure drop and flow rate through the reactor core, the temperature and power distributions in the reactor core, the departure from nucleate boiling (DNB), the condition for onset of flow instability (OFI), in addition to, the critical velocity beyond which the fuel elements will collapse. These values depend on coolant velocity, fuel element geometry, inlet temperature, flow direction and water column above the top of the reactor core. Enough safety margins to ONB, DNB and OFI must-emphasized. A heat transfer package is used for calculating convection heat transfer coefficient in single phase turbulent, transition and laminar regimes. The main objective of this paper is to study the possibility of power upgrading of WWR-S research reactor from 2 to 10 MWth. This study presents a one-dimensional mathematical model (axial direction) for steady-state thermal-hydraulic design and analysis of the upgraded WWR-S reactor in which two types of plate fuel elements are employed. FOR-CONV computer program is developed for the needs of the power upgrading of WWR-S reactor up to 10 MWth.

  • A hot forming of large thick Al plate using a grid-type hybrid die is a process to make a shell plate for the production of a spherical LNG tank. This process is characterized by using a grid-typed die with an additional air cooling system for reducing the cooling time of the heated plate after hot forming. The process consists of the plate's feeding, heating, forming and cooling in detail and each of them is continuously performed along the rail. This paper was designed to propose the analytical and experimental methods for determining the convection and interfacial heat transfer coefficients required in hot forming analysis of Al plate. These values in the analysis are to reproduce numerically the cooling performance of grid-typed die and cooling device. Interfacial heat transfer was obtained from the heat transfer experiments for different pressures and inverse analysis method. To verify the efficiency of the coefficient values obtained from above methods, FE analysis and experiment of the hot spherical-forming process were conducted for a small-scaled model. The convection coefficient was also calculated from flow analysis of air released by cooling device within grid-typed die using ANSYS-CFX.

  • Present study is concerned with an experimental study on the cooling characteristics of heat-generating components arranged in channels which are made by printed circuit boards. To assess the thermal performance of the heat-generating components arranged by $5\times11$ in flow channel, three variables are used: the velocity of the fluid at the entrance, the height of channel, and row number of the component. The cooling characteristics of the heat-generating components such as the surface temperature rise, the adiabatic temperature rise, the adiabatic heat transfer coefficient, and the effect of thermal wake are compared with the result of the experiment and the numerical analysis. Based on the experiment analysis, some conclusions can be drawn: First of all, the experiment and numerical analysis are identical comparatively; the heat transfer coefficient increases as H/B decreases. Howeve., when H/B is over 7.2, the effect of H/B is rather trivial. The effect is the biggest at the first component from the entrance, and it decreases until the fully developed flow, where it becomes very consistent. The thermal wake function calculated for each row decreases as H/B increases.

The heat transfer coefficient increases as the Reynolds number increases, while the thermal wake function calculated for each row decreases as the Reynolds number increases. In addition, it is found that Nu-Re correlation equation is Identical to the previous studies, and the empirical correlation equation between the thermal wake function and Re is presented.

  • This study was conducted on cooling systems in which, for the first time at home and abroad, cold water panels are embedded in the walls of small buildings for radiant cooling by heat absorption with cold water. In summer, cold water is circulated through cold water (chiller) circulation tubes embedded in three walls (two side walls and one rear wall) of a building to implement radiant cooling by the coldness of the water. From the results of this study, the experimental and theoretical natural convection heat transfer coefficients were relatively well-matched over the entire experimental range, thereby verifying the reliability of the experimental results. The surface temperature reduction rate of the walls in which cold water panels are embedded was large whereas that of the walls where no cold water panels are embedded was very small.
