  • Silicatein-${\alpha}$, the enzyme extracted from silica spicules in glass sponges, has been studied extensively in the way of chemistry from 1999, in which the pioneering work by Morse, D. E. - the discovery of the enzymatic hydrolysis in Silicatein-${\alpha}$ - was published. Since its reaction conditions are physiologically favored, synthesis of various materials, such as gallium oxide, zirconium oxide, and silicon oxide, was achieved without any hazardous wastes. Although some groups synthesized oxide films and particles, they have not achieved yet controlled morphogenesis in the reaction conditions mentioned above. With the knowledge of catalytic triad involved in hydrolysis of silicone alkoxide and oligomerization of silicic acid, we designed the novel peptide amphiphiles to not only form self-assembled structure, but also display similar activities to silicatein-${\alpha}$. Designed templates were able to self-assemble into left-handed helices for the peptide amphiphiles with L-form amino acid, catalyzing polycondensation of silicic acids onto the surface of them. It led to the formation of silica helices with 30-50 nm diameters. These results were characterized by various techniques, including SEM, TEM, and STEM. Given the situation that nano-bio-technology, the bio-applicable technology in nanometer scale, has been attracting considerable attention; this result could be applied to the latest applications in biotechnology, such as biosensors, lab-on-a-chip, biocompatible nanodevices.

  • Heteroepitaxial growth remains as one of the continuously growing interests, because the heterogeneous crystallization on different substrates is a common feature in the fabrication processes of many semiconductor materials and devices, such as molecular beam epitaxy, pulsed laser deposition, sputtering, chemical bath deposition, chemical vapor deposition, hydrothermal synthesis, vapor phase transport and so on [1,2]. By using the R.F. sputtering system, ZnO thin films were deposited on graphene 4 and 6 mono layers, which is grown on 400 nm and 600 nm $SiO_2$ substrates, respectively. The ZnO thin layer was deposited at various temperatures by using a ZnO target. In this experimental, the working power and pressure were $3{\times}10^{-3}$ Torr and 50 W, respectively. The base pressure of the chamber was kept at a pressure around $10^{-6}$ Torr by using a turbo molecular pump. The oxygen and argon gas flows were controlled around 5 and 10 sccm by using a mass flow controller system, respectively. The structural properties of the samples were analyzed by XRD measurement. The film surface and carrier concentration were analyzed by an atomic force microscope and Hall measurement system. The surface morphologies were observed using field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM).

  • Oxidation behavior and microstructural characteristics of nano-sized Sn powder were studied. DTA-TG analysis showed that the Sn powder exhibited an endothermic peak at $227^{\circ}C$ and exothermic peak at $560^{\circ}C$ with an increase in weight. Based on the phase diagram consideration of Sn-O system and XRD analysis, it was interpreted that the first peak was for the melting of Sn powder and the second peak resulted from the formation of $SnO_2$ phase. Microstructural observation revealed that the $SnO_2$ powder, heated to $1000^{\circ}C$ under air atmosphere, consisted of agglomerates with large particle size due to the melting of Sn powder during heat treatment. Finally, fine $SnO_2$ powders with an average size of 50nm can be fabricated by controlled heat treatment and ultrasonic milling process.

  • Palladium has been used as a catalyst not only in Suzuki and Heck cross coupling reaction in organic chemistry, but also in automobile industry for the reduction of vehicle exhausts. The catalytic activity of Pd nanoparticles depends strongly on their size and exposed crystalline facets. In this study, the single crystalline palladium nanocubes/nanorods were prepared in the presence of polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) and potassium bromide (KBr) using the polyol method. Selected area diffraction pattern and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were performed by TEM. The result shows that the ratio of KBr/PVP is the key factor to determine whether the product is cubes or rods. The as-prepared Pd nanocubes were highly uniform in both size and shape. The ordered packing structures including monolayer and multilayer can be fabricated via the rate-controlled evaporation of solution solvent. The catalytic activity of these Pd nanocubes towards heck reaction of iodobenzene with acrylate or acrylic acid was found to be higher than that of Pd nanorods. We suspect it is caused by the difference of energy state while Pd nanocubes is {100} plane and nanorods is {111} plane.

  • The electrochemical behaviors of lanthanide ion(La and Nd) and lanthanide complexes with 2, 2, 6, 6-tetramethyl-3, 5-heptanedione(THD), sym-hydroxydibenzo-16-crown-5(HD16C5) and sym-dibenzo-16-crown-5-oxyacetic acid(D16C5A) ligands in acton solution have been investigated by the use of cyclic voltammetry and direct current polarography. The peak potential and peak current, their dependency on the concentration, temperature, the reversibility of the eleotrode reactions are described. The reduction of the lanthanide ions and complexes in 0.05 M TEAP proceeded one-electron step in first step and one two-electron step in second step. These reduction step was irreversible and the reduction current was diffusion controlled. Macrovcyclic crown ethers, sym-hydroxydibenzo-16-crown-5(HD16C5) and sym-dibenzo-16-crown-5-oxyacetic acid(D16C5A), were prepared from 1, 5-bis-(2-hydroxyphenoxy)-3-oxapentane with epichlorohydrin. The voltammetric behaviors of Ln(III)-HD16C5 and Ln-D16C5A complexes in aceton solution have been investigated by the voltammetric method. The composition and stability constants of lanthanide complexes were determined.

  • With the discovery in plants of the proteinaceous forisome crystalloid (Knoblauch, et al. 2003), a novel, non-living, ATP-independent biological material became available to the designer of smart materials for advanced actuating and sensing. The in vitro studies of Knoblauch, et al. show that forisomes (2-4 micron wide and 10-40 micron long) can be repeatedly stimulated to contract and expand anisotropically by shifting either the ambient pH or the ambient calcium ion concentration. Because of their unique abilities to develop and reverse strains greater than 20% in time periods less than one second, forisomes have the potential to outperform current smart materials as advanced, biomimetic, multi-functional, smart sensors or actuators. Probing forisome material properties is an immediate need to lay the foundation for synthesizing forisomebased smart materials for health monitoring of structural integrity in civil infrastructure and for aerospace hardware. Microfluidics is a growing, vibrant technology with increasingly diverse applications. Here, we use microfluidics to study the surface interaction between forisome and substrate and the conformational dynamics of forisomes within a confined geometry to lay the foundation for forisome-based smart materials synthesis in controlled and repeatable environment.

  • Nano-structured polyaniline have been synthesized by interfacial polymerization method at room temperature. An aqueous solution of aniline in chloroform and another solution of ammonium peroxydisulfate in doping acid were prepared at different times terminated with methanol at room temperature. SEM, UV-vis were used to characterize the polyaniline with regard to their morphology and structure. The diameter and length of polyaniline can be controlled by the reaction time. Nano-structured polyaniline were found to have superior sensitivity for volatile organic compounds(VOCs). As the reaction time to increase from 30minute to 2hours the sensitivity were decreased to VOCs vapors. The sensitivity of Nano-structured polyaniline sensor appeared to VOCs better than the sensitivity of chemical synthesis sensors. The sensitivity of Nano-structured polyaniline sensor improved benzene vapors.

  • Microalgae produce not only lipids for biodiesel production but also valuable biochemicals which are often accumulated under cellular stress mediated by certain chemicals. While the microcarriers for the application of drug delivery systems for animal cells are widely studied, their applications into microalgal research or biorefinery are rarely investigated. Here we develope dual-functional magnetic microcapsules which work not only as flocculants for microalgal harvesting but also potentially as microcarriers for the controlled release of target chemicals stimulating microalgae to enhance the accumulation of valuable chemicals. Magnetic microcapsules are synthesized by layer-by-layer(LbL) coating of PSS-PDDA on $Fe_3O_4$ nanoparticle-embedded $CaCO_3$ microparticles followed by removing $CaCO_3$ sacrificial templates. The positively charged magnetic microcapsules flocculate microalgae by electrostatic interaction which are sequentially collected by the magnetophoretic separation. The microcapsules with a polycationic outer layer provide efficient binding sites for negatively charged microalgae and by that means are further utilized as a chemical-delivery and flocculation system for microalgal research and biorefineries.
