This study was conducted to determine the effect of controlled-release fertilizer on growth of Oncidium. Leaf and pseudobulb length increased with controlled-release fertilizer from 2 g to 3 g treatment compared to hyponex and controlled-release fertilizer I g treatment, while leaf width and number of leaf was not significant among treatments. Plant weight increased with controlled-release fertilizer from 2 g to 3 g treatment compared to hyponex and controlled-release fertilizer I g treatment. Flowering date(bloomed October early) did not show significant difference among treatments. The number of flowers showed the most in controlled-release fertilizer 3 g treatment as 62.4 ea/plant, but was not different significantly among treatments. Flower stem length and width were also non-significant among treatments. Branching numbers increased in the controlled-release fertilizer 2 g and 3 g treatments. Mineral elements of shoot increased from 2 g to 3 g treatment rather than the controlled-release fertilizer 1g treatment. Especially, K content was higher compared to N and P content. Therefore, appropriate controlled-release fertilizer amount for Oncidium was recommended as 2 g.
Recently we have interest on rice products developed by environment-friendly management. The technology of paper mulching was practised without herbicide in machine transplanting cultivation of paddy. A field experiment was conducted on Gangseo series (coarse loamy, mixed, nonacid, mesic family of Aquic Fluventic Eutrochrepts) at the National Institute of Crop Science (NICS), RDA, Suwon, Gyeonggi province, Republic of Korea in 2004. This experiment was carried out to evaluate rice growth, weed control and nitrogen efficiency by the different controlled-release fertilizer levels in paper mulching transplanting. Treatments consisted of conventional fertilization, controlled-release fertilizer (100%, 80%, 60%) compared with nitrogen amount ($110kg\;ha^{-1}$) of conventional fertilization and no nitrogen plot. Mulching paper consisted of recycled paper which was coated with biodegradable plastics. There were no differences between conventional rice transplanting and paper mulching on missing hills. Weed occurrence and control were diverse and low as fertilizer amount increased. Plant height and tiller number per hill increased as fertilizer amount decreased. There were no difference between controlled-release fertilizer 80% and conventional fertilization plot on rice growth traits. Leaf color and $NH_4{^+}-N$ in soil had similar trends. There was no difference in yield between controlled-release fertilizer 80% and conventional fertilization plot. Agronomic nitrogen-use efficiency was high as fertilizer amount decreased. Therefore, these results suggested controlled-release fertilizer 80% should be optimum amount under paper mulching transplanting of rice considering weed control, rice growth and nitrogen efficiency.
When a football field is constructed using sand medium, the fertilizer management has to be adjusted because of the low nutrient holding capacity and higher leaching rate. The objective of this study was to test the effects of slow release fertilizers on Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) growth in simulated sport field rootzones with PVC pipe pots. Data of turfgrass color, uniformity, growth rate, biomass above ground, and the nitrate content in the leaching solution was collected at different growing stages and during four simulated rain fall periods. The result showed that the nutrient release rate of urea was the highest and that of controlled release nitrogen fertilizer was the lowest. Effects of the controlled release nitrogen fertilizer lasted 14 days more than other lawn fertilizers and 28 days longer than regular urea with acceptable quality levels of turf. The slow release fertilizer also restrained excessive growth of the grass, reduced the times of mowing. Slow release fertilizer used in this study reduced $NO_3$-N leaching by almost 50% at the beginning of turf establishment.
The newly developed fertilizer is the slow-releasing fertilizer which can be used as a basal fertilizer without no additional fertilization at tillering stage. It has 30-4-6% of $N-P_2O_5-K_2O$ and was coated with mixture of LDPE (Low density polyethylene), EVA (Ethylene vinyl acetate), BDP (Bio degraded polymer), TALC and nonionic surfactant for the controlled release up to 50 days after application. Coating materials were designed to be decomposed naturally. This fertilizer can be applied directly to the seedling tray mechanically just before transplanting, resulting in significant labor saving effect. The developed slow-release fertilizer, which can replace both basal fertilization and top dressing at tillering stage by single application directly to seedling tray, showed the highest release at 14~21 days after transplanting. Considering the plant growth at different growth stages and yield, the optimal application rate of developed slow-release fertilizer was 300 g per rice nursery tray and the yield of rice at this application rate was 5.25 MT/ha. Rice quality in terms of head rice grain ratio, amylose content, whiteness, and taste value decreased as fertilization rate increased from 200 g to 500 g per nursery tray. Fertilization rate based on quantity of fertilizer ingredients (N, P, K) was reduced by 49.3% compared to the standard application rate and there was 49.2% reduction in labor input for fertilization.
As a basic study for reusing converter slag as slow-release potassium fertilizer by a sintering process, powdery converter slag and reagent grade $SiO_2\;and\;K_2CO_3$ were mixed with ball mill above 24 hours and sintered at $900^{\circ}C{\sim}1000^{\circ}C\;for\;10{\sim}60$ min. Basicity of the mixed powder was controlled to 0.7, 1.0 and 1.4 and content of $K_2O$ was fixed with 22 mass%. After sintering, property of the potassium fertilizer was investigated with X-ray diffraction pattern and ICP analysis. Also effects of basicity, sintering temperature and time on the making slow-release potassium fertilizer was investigated. Water solubility of KBO in sample were decreased with sintering time, temperature and decreased with basicity. Citric acid solubility of $K_2O$ were increased with basicity and decreased with sintering temperature.
The optimal application rate of a controlled release fertilizer (CRF) on the growth, yield, and seeding time of rice grown on seedling trays was investigated. The experimental field was located at $37^{\circ}22^{\prime}10^{{\prime}{\prime}}N$ latitude and $127^{\circ}03^{\prime}85^{{\prime}{\prime}}E$ longitude in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi-do, Republic of Korea. The soil in the paddy field was a clay loam. The CRF used in the experiment contained $300g\;kg^{-1}$ of nitrogen, $60g\;kg^{-1}$ of phosphate, and $60g\;kg^{-1}$ of potassium, respectively. The CRF was applied at the rate of 0, 200, 300, 400, 500, and 600 grams on rice seedling tray compared with the field application based on soil testing (control), respectively. The CRF can be applied as single application(which can replace basal fertilizer application and two top dressing application) directly to the seedling tray, and showed the minimum release at the seedling period. Considering the plant growth, nitrogen use efficency and yield of rice, the optimal application rate of developed CRF was 500 g per seedling tray and the yield of rice at this application rate was $4.92{\sim}5.04Mg\;ha^{-1}$. The regression formula between the rice yield and application rates of CRF was as follows ; "$Y=0.0002{\chi}^2+0.0963{\chi}+411.6$($R^2$ : 0.9922) in 2010 and $Y=8E-6{\chi}^2+0.2723{\chi}+344.04$($R^2$:0.9864) in 2011, Y : Rice yield ($Mg\;ha^{-1}$), ${\chi}$ : Application rate (grams) of controlled release fertilizer". The optimum application rates of CRF per rice seedling tray by regression formula was 498 grams in 2010 and 513 grams in 2011.
This study was conducted to gain basic data for alleviation of gas emission and conservation of healthy soil environment by investigating an aspect of gas emission and microbial diversity due to the supplement of different fertilizers after application with a livestock manure compost in greenhouse soils. Green pepper was cultivated in clay loamy soil from April to August. Before planting, a livestock manure compost was applied with $741mg\;ha^{-1}$ on the basis of the phosphate content contained in compost. And then, deficient nitrogen for cropping was supplemented with either quick-acting fertilizer of urea or a controlled slow release fertilizer made from urea formaldehyde(U/F). $NH_3$ and R $NH_2$ gases emitted from soil showed a low concentration in the early stage but a maximum in 27 days after planting, then decreased rapidly and not detected after 33 days. Their average concentrations were 42% and 85% lower in the treatment of slow release fertilizer than that of urea fertilizer, respectively. $CO_2$ gas emitted under urea fertilization was ranged from 1,200 to $3,200mg{\ell}^{-1}$ and that in slow release fertilizer was $900{\sim}2,650mg\;{\ell}^{-1}$. The average concentration of urea treatment was $2,260mg{\ell}^{-1}$ and 30% higher than that of slow release fertilizer. The treatment of slow release fertilizer with the lapse of cropping time populated larger in numbers of bacteria, actinomycetes, nitrate bacteria and nitrate reduction bacteria, and ratios of bacteria and actinmycetes to fungi than that of urea fertilizer. But the number of fungi was higher in the treatment of urea fertilizer and denitrifying bacteria showed a similar trend in both treatments. The microbial diversity index, which calculated with numbers of 6 species of microorganisms, was decreased with increasing of growing stage in the range of 0.1 to 0.35 and that was higher in the tratment of slow release fertilizer than urea.
Recently we are interest in organic farming of rice. The technology of paper mulching was practised without herbicide in machine transplanting cultivation of paddy. A field experiment was conducted in Gangseo series (coarse loamy, mixed, nonacid, mesic family of Aquic Fluventic Eutrochrepts) at the National Institute of Crop Science (NICS), RDA, Suwon, Gyeonggi province, Republic of Korea in 2004. This experiment was carried out to evaluate soil redox potential, weed control and rice growth by the different organic matter in paper mulching transplanting. Compost, rice straw and soiling rye were incorporated as organic matter. The nitrogen amount of controlled-release fertilizer (CRF) plot was 80% compared with nitrogen amount ($110kg\;ha^{-1}$) of conventional fertilization. Mulching paper consisted of recycled paper which was coated with biodegradable plastics. There were no difference between conventional rice transplanting and paper mulching on missing hills after organic matter application. Weed control were the highest at added soiling rye plot. The redox potential of soil was the lowest in rice straw + CRF 80% plot at tillering stage. The $NH_4{^+}-N$ in soil was the highest at soiling rye + CRF 80% tillering stage. There was no difference in yield between soiling rye + CRF 80%, compost + CRF 80% and conventional fertilization plot.
Long term cultivation crops like tomato, capsicum, melon etc. demand much amount of continuous supplying of nutrition during the whole growing periods. It is not easy to cover satisfactorily the nutritional demands for them by splitted top dressings, slow release fertilizer applications and fertigation systems. To overcome these problems, the "CULTAN" (Controlled Uptake Long Term Ammonium Nutrition) Beaker Deposit techniques have been developed and it was put into PVC beaker with the combined nitrogen fertilizer type mixed with the ratio of one-third of ammonium sulfate-N and two-thirds of urea-N, in which nitrogen was loaded on the demanding amount of a tomato plant during the growing period. Gypsum was mixed as a binder, and loamy soil and compost were used as a diffusion regulator. It was placed upside down into root zone of tomato at the transplanting. Tomato roots were spreaded into the Deposit beaker by ammonium ions which attract root growth. The tomato fruit yield and nitrogen uptake by plant were increased by application of $NH_4$-Beaker deposit fertilizer rather than those of common fertilizer treatment. In conclusion, it was able to improve economic and ecological benefits through CULTAN system compared with common fertilization systems. CULTAN system was estimated as a prospective alternative to enhance productivity and minimize nutrient lose. In addition, it shows further developing possibility of CULTAN system by the supplement of micro-nutrients and pesticides in the macro-nutrient beaker deposits.
The installation of subsurface drainage equipment is required for generalized use of paddy field and to improve soil productivity. The internal drainage of paddy field has improved root condition from the increasing of oxygen supply and removing noxious elements. This experiment was carried out to determine the effects of fertilization and drainage system on soil characteristic, growth and lodging trait of rice in paddy soil. A subsurface drainage system was installed a depth of 0.8m. Three fertilizer treatments were applied : 1) Conventional fertilized plot, 2) Controlled-release fertilized plot, 3) No-fertilized plot. In conventional plot, 110 kg N (as urea 46%), 45 kg P (as fused phosphate 20%) and 57 kg K (as potassium chloride 60%) per hectare fertilizers were applied. Controlled-release fertilizer was applied by 70% of N compared to the conventional plot. During the rice cropping, the water depth decrease was two times higher in subsurface drainage(SD) plot than non-drained(ND) plot. After harvesting of rice, the bulk density of sub-soil(10-20cm depth) was lower in SD plot than ND plot. After the experiment, the surface soil pH was high at SD plot but sub-soil was high at ND plot. Organic matter content was higher in all soil layer for SD plot than fro ND plot. Available $P_2O_5$ was not different between SD and ND plot for surface soil, but was high for SD plot for sub soil. The $NH_4{^+}-N$ content of soil, shoot dry matter, total nitrogen and $K_2O$ of rice plant were greater after panicle formation stage in SD plot. Total nitrogen content, $P_2O_5$ and $K_2O$ of rice root were high in SD plot after heading. Though the gravity center and 3rd internode length were greater, pulling force of rice root was higher in SD plot than ND plot. Rice yield in SD plot were low at conventional and controlled-release fertilized plot because of the greater field lodging, but yield in SD plot was high at no-fertilized plot. This study indicates that the fertilization level should be decrease on subsurface drainage system for rice cropping.
