  • Growth and flowering of Cymbidium 'Red Fire' and 'Yokihi' plants were examined in a greenhouse with cooling systems in summer, and with night interruption (NI) lighting in winter as a forcing culture system. The greenhouse was divided into two sections with separate cooling controls during the summer season. One section was cooled by a mist system (mist), while the other section was cooled by a shade screen (shade). During the winter, the greenhouse was redivided into three sections within each cooling system. Plants were grown with NI either at a low light intensity of $3-7{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$(LNI) or a high l ight intensity of $120{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$(HNI) u sing h igh-pressure sodium l amps during the 22:00-02:00 HR. The control plants were grown under 9 h short-day condition. NI for 16 weeks and cooling for 9 weeks were employed twice during the 2 years of the experimental period. The air temperature was approximately $2^{\circ}C$ lower in the mist than in the shade and the relative humidity was 80 ${\pm}5%$ in the mist compared to $55{\pm}5%$ in the shade. The daily light integral in the mist section was 48% higher than in the shade section. The time from initial planting to flowering pseudobulb emergence decreased with both LNI and HNI for both cultivars, regardless of the cooling treatments. Under NI conditions, however, between 60% and 1 00% of plants of both cultivars flowered in the mist, whereas no or 20% of 'Red Fire' or 'Yokihi' plants, respectively, flowered in the shade treatment over 2 years. Plants grown under the mist had bigger pseudobulbs than those grown in the shade under both NI treatments. These results show that commercial use of NI in winter and a mist cooling system in summer would decrease crop production time to 2 years and increase profits in Cymbidium forcing culture.

  • Bacterial blossom blight of kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa) has been mainly controlled by antibiotics. Among 15 candidate chemicals, streptomycin sulfate oxytetracycline WP, streptomycin copper hydroxide WP and oxolinic acid WP were selected as preventive bactericides against bacterial blossom blight of kiwfruit through in vitro and in vivo test. Spray of streptomycin sulfate oxytetracycline WP and streptomycin copper hydroxide WP at flowering period was most effective in controlling bacterial blossom blight of kiwifruit. Among the various combinations of spray times at different spray periods, optimum spray program of the preventive bactericides for the control of bacterial blossom blight of kiwifruit was turned out to be 3 times application with 10 day-interval from early May during the flowering season of kiwifruits.

  • This study was conducted to examine the effects of defoliation treatment on the growth and yield of strawberry ($Fragaria{\times}ananassa$ cv. Maehyang and Seolhyang) during nursery period. Leaves of strawberry plantlet had been removed except two, three and four fully expanded leaves until planting date. As the intensity of defoliation was strong, the petiole length was reduced and overgrowth of strawberry plantlet was suppressed. Outer diameter of crown in defoliation treatments significantly decreased but inner diameter of crown was not significant. Number of primary roots of the 3 leaves or 4 leaves defoliation treatment generally tended to increase, but there was not significantly different among treatments. Fresh weight and leaf area in the defoliation treatments significantly decreased and the root weight were higher in partial 3 leaves or 4 leaves defoliation treatment but was not significantly different among treatments. Because T/R ratio decreased significantly as growth inhibition of above-ground part compared to underground part, it is considered easy to take rooting after plantlet plating. As the intensity of defoliation was strong, chlorophyll contents tended to decrease significantly. Reduction of the endogenous nitrogen by defoliation effectively led to promote floral differentiation at low temperature and short day condition. This promoted timing of budding and flowering and also induced uniform flowering after plantlet planting. Marketable fruit yield of 3 leaves defoliation treatment tended to be higher than the control.

  • This research was performed to investigate the effect of light source and light quality in night break treatment on the growth and flowering of standard chrysanthemum. It was processed 4 hours (22:00-02:00) night break using LED 590, 610, 630, 660, 680nm and fluorescent lamp (mixed light of 480+540+610nm) in standard chrysanthemum 'Baekma' and 'Jinba' for 40 days from transplanting. The days to flower budding from short-day treatment of 'Baekma' were the longgest at fluorescent treatment (21.3 days) and were the shorttest at LED 590nm treatment (15.8 days) among all treatments. The days to flower budding from short-day treatment of 'Jinba' was longger with 18.0 days, 17.8 days, and 17.7 days at the fluorescent, LED 610nm, and 660nm treatments. And it was the shortest with 15.1 days in LED 590nm treatment. Similarly, the days to flowering from short-day treatment of 'Baekma' was the longgest with 56.9 days at fluorescent treatment, and was the shorttest in 51.6 days about LED 590 nm treatment. The days to flowering from short-day treatment of 'Jinba' was longer at fluorescent (56.0 days) and LED 660nm (56.7 days) treatments and was shortest at LED 590nm (52.9 days) among all treatments. Therefore, inhibition of flower bud initiation and flowering were the most effective under fluorescent treatment in case of 'Baekma', and fluorescent and LED 660nm treatments in case of 'Jinba'. The length and weight of cut flower of 'Baekma' and 'Jinba' were most excellent in fluorescent treatment in which the floral differentiation suppression effect was the best. Consequently, as to the growth and flowering of standard chrysanthemum, the treatment which was suitable as the light source and light quality for night break is regarded as the fluorescent lamp, and also under LED 660nm up to a certain level.

  • An interspecific hybrid lily cultivar 'Green Star' was bred in 2005 at the National Institute of Horticultural and Herbal Science (NIHHS), Rural Development Administration (RDA), Korea. The crossing and in vitro embryo rescue was conducted between Lilium FA97-2 (L. ${\times}$ formolongi 'Silky White' ${\times}$ L. Asiatic 'Sunray') and L. Asiatic 'Bomi (Byeongga ${\times}$ Connecticut King)' by cut style pollination method (CSM) at Suwon in 2000. The first selection was done and was tentatively named as 'FA03-5' in 2003. After in vitro multiplication and bulbing production of 'FA03-5' line, growth and flowering characteristic tests were conducted from 2003 to 2005. The evaluation of characteristics and consumer preferences were surveyed at a lily flower show of NIHHS in 2005. 'Green Star' flowered in the middle of June and grew more than 120 cm stem in length. Flowers bloomed facing upward, unspotted in petals and greenish yellow (RHS, Y6D). 'Green Star' was male sterile. Year-round flowering can be done by storing the bulb under $-1.5^{\circ}C$ conditions. It was needed to control the Botrytis disease in wet season.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of uniconazole (Sumiseven), an existing expensive growth retardant, and diniconazole (Binnari), used as a cheap germicide, on the growth and flowering of Vinca major and Salvia splendis for the possibility of substitution for expensive growth retardants. The growths of V. major and S. splendis were retarded by Binnari treatment. The effect of Binnari 100 mg/l treatment was higher than that of Sumiseven 5 mg/l treatment in both plants. The length of leaves was remarkably retarded by Binnari treatment, however, the width of leaves was only slightly retarded, giving the leaf a round shape. The number of days to flowering was increased by Binnari treatment in both in V. major and S. splendis. The number of days to flowering in V. major showed no significant difference compared to the control except by treatemtn with Binnari 400 mg/l. The number of florets of S. splendis increased with treatment with Binnari 100 and 200 mg/l.

  • This study investigated the antioxidant activity of ethanolic extracts of 1~20 kGy-gamma irradiated flowering cherry fruit (Prunus serrulata L. var. spontanea Max. wils.). The total phenolic compound content was highest (30.35 mg/g) in the 10 kGy sample, but there was no consistent trend matching the increase or decrease of gamma irradiation. Radical scavenging activity using DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) showed that gamma-irradiated samples were better than non-irradiated samples and that the 10 kGy-gamma irradiated sample was the best ($IC_{50}$ 327.52 ppm). In reducing power, gamma-irradiated samples induced higher activities than non-irradiated samples at concentrations below 2.5 mg/mL, and the sample with the highest activity was the 20 kGy-gamma irradiated sample. In nitrite-scavenging ability, both gamma-irradiated and non-irradiated samples showed high activity (73~94%) at pH 1.2, 3.0, and 4.2. Also, the nitrite-scavenging ability of gamma-irradiated samples was significantly different from that of the control at pH 1.2. The FRAP value of the 3 kGy-irradiated sample also showed the highest value of 0.38 mM. Our results indicate that gamma irradiating the ethanolic extracts of flowering cherry fruit increases the antioxidant activity at some of the radiation doses. Therefore, it suggests that gamma irradiation could increase biological activity and be used effectively in food manufacturing and related industries.
