Purpose: The objective of this study was to measure emissions of gases (ammonia ($NH_3$), hydrogen sulfide ($H_2S$) and carbon dioxide ($CO_2$)), volatile organic compounds (VOC) and odor from two shallow pit pig nursery rooms. Gas and odor reduction practices for swine operations based on the literature were also discussed. Methods: This study was conducted for 60 days at a commercial swine nursery facility which consisted of four identical rooms with mechanical ventilations. Two rooms (room 1 (R1) and room 2 (R2)) with different pig numbers and ventilation rates were used in this study. The pig manure from both the R1 and R2 were characterized. Indoor/outdoor temperatures, ventilation rates/duration, $NH_3$, $H_2S$, $CO_2$, and VOC concentrations of the ventilation air were measured periodically (3-5 times/week). Odor concentrations of the ventilations were measured two times on two days. Three different types of gas and odor reduction practices (diet control, chemical method, and biological method) were discussed in this study. Results: The volatile solids to total solids ratio (VS/TS) and crude protein (CP) value of pig manure indicated the pig manure had high potential for gas and odor emissions. The $NH_3$, $H_2S$, $CO_2$ and VOC concentrations were measured in the ranges of 1.0-13.3, 0.1-5.7, 1600-3000 and 0.0-1.83 ppm, respectively. The $NH_3$ concentrations were found significantly higher than $H_2S$ concentrations for both rooms. The odor concentrations were measured in the range of $2853-4432OU_E/m^3$. There was significant difference in odor concentrations between the two rooms which was due to difference in pig numbers and ventilation duration. The literature studies showed that simultaneous use of dietary control and biofiltration practices will be more effective and environmentally friendly for gas and odor reductions from pig barns. Conclusions: The gas and odor concentrations measured in the ventilation air from the pig rooms indicate an acute need for using gas and odor mitigation technologies. Adopting diet control and biofiltration practices simultaneously could be the best option for mitigating gas and odor emissions from pig barns.

As the Kyoto Protocol will come into effect starting February 2005, 55 member countries of the Conference of Parties of the Framework Convention on Climate Change (FCCC) will be under obligation to reduce the emissions of Carbon Dioxide $(CO_2)$ by 5.2 Percent from the 1990 levels before the year 2012. Hence the development of technology to prepare for this has been accelerated in Korea. The effect of technology varies with market size of technology, and it is necessary to control technology development period, according to the size and trend of technology market. Moreover it is essential that market analysis be finished before technology development, because market on the $(CO_2)$ Reduction and Sequestration Technology expands internationally. For that reason, it is needed to analyze domestic market and to consider technology development strategy according to analysis results. In this paper, we analyzed the domestic industry and forecasted the market size, both related to the Reduction and Sequestration Technology on $(CO_2)$ emission, which is the major component of global Green House Gas(GHG).
BACKGROUND: Carbonized biomass is a carbon-rich solid product obtained by the pyrolysis of biomass. It has been suggested to mitigate climate change through increased carbon storage and reduction of greenhouse gas emission. The objective of this study was to evaluate carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) and nitrous oxide ($N_2O$) emissions from soil after carbonized biomass addition. METHODS AND RESULTS: The carbonized biomass was made from a pyrolyzer, which a reactor was operated about $400{\sim}500^{\circ}C$ for 5 hours. The treatments were consisted of a control without input of carbonized biomass and two levels of carbonized biomass inputs as 6.06 Mg/ha for CB-1 and 12.12 Mg/ha for CB-2. Emissions of $CO_2$ and $N_2O$ from orchard soil were determined using closed chamber for 13 weeks at $25^{\circ}C$ of incubation temperature. It was shown that the cumulative $CO_2$ were $209.4g\;CO_2/m^2$ for CB-1, $206.4g\;CO_2/m^2$ for CB-2 and $214.5g\;CO_2/m^2$ for the control after experimental periods. The cumulative $CO_2$ emission was similar in carbonized biomass input treatment compared to the control. It was appeared that cumulative $N_2O$ emissions were $4,478mg\;N_2O/m^2$ for control, $3,227mg\;N_2O/m^2$ for CB-1 and$ 2,324mg\;N_2O/m^2$ for CB-2 at the end of experiment. Cumulative $N_2O$ emission contents significantly decreased with increasing the carbonized biomass input. CONCLUSION: Consequently the carbonized biomass from byproducts such as pear branch residue could suppress the soil $N_2O$ emission. The results fromthe study imply that carbonized biomass can be utilized to reduce greenhouse gas emission from the orchard field.

Carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) is the greatest contributor among the major greenhouse gases covered by the Kyoto Protocol. Therefore, substantial efforts for the control and reduction of $CO_2$ emissions, including increased efficiency of fossil fuel energy usage, development of energy sources with lower carbon content, and increased reliability on alternative energy sources, are being performed worldwide. However, development and industrial application of $CO_2$ sequestration techniques are needed to meet the requirements of the Kyoto Protocol. Among the $CO_2$ sequestration methods developed, geological sequestration methods such as the storage in deep aquifers, deep coal seams and oil and gas reservoirs and the mineral carbonation is considered most favorable because of its stability and environmental effectiveness. In this review, geochemical concepts and technologic development of geologic sequestration technology, especially the storage in deep aquifers and the mineral carbonation, are discussed. The weakness and strengths for each of geologic sequestration methods, are also reviewed.

In the construction industry, we have set goals such as reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and reduction of energy use. In particular, reduction of CO2 emissions in the concrete manufacturing process, reduction of industrial waste and industrial wastes into concrete The zero-emission level of reuse as a resource is under review. On the other hand, the cost of stone is expensive due to small quantity production of domestic stone production in order, it is difficult to carry and construct with heavy material, and it takes long time to construct. In order to solve the shortage of supply and demand of natural stone, various kinds of stone powder, artificial stone made by putting stone texture on the surface of mortar or concrete, fiber reinforced plate, tiles and the like are increasingly used. In this study, the artificial stone using slag and recycled aggregate instead of natural stone was fabricated and the strength characteristics were evaluated for its applicability and feasibility.

To reduce the vehicular emissions of air pollutants, various traffic control programs (TCPs) have been used. In 2002, two TCPs have been implemented in Seoul and Busan, respectively. In this study, based on the study results on the effectiveness of the TCP in Seoul (Kim et al., 2005) and Busan (Lee et al., 2006), emission reduction by the TCP in Seoul was estimated and their contribution to the ambient air pollutants' concentrations was discussed. During the TCP period in 2002 at Seoul, emissions of air pollutants were reduced by 35% for CO and $NO_2$, 80% for HC, 23% for $PM_{10}$, and 24% for $SO_2$. Vehicular emission reduction affected the ambient concentrations significantly for $NO_2$. However, for $SO_2$, vehicular emission reduction did not affect the ambient concentration significantly. For $PM_{10}$, vehicular emission reduction did not affect the ambient concentration significantly if considering fugitive emissions.

Biochar is a carbon-rich solid product obtained by the pyrolysis of biomass. It has been suggested to mitigate climate change through increased carbon storage and reduction of greenhouse gas emission. The objective of this study was to evaluate carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) and nitrous oxide ($N_2O$) emissions from soil after various biochars addition. The biochars were produced by pyrolysing pear branch, rice hull and bean straw at $400{\sim}500^{\circ}C$. The treatments were consisted of a control without input of biochar and three type biochars input as 5.0 Mg/ha. Emissions of $CO_2$ and $N_2O$ from upland soil were determined using closed chamber for 8 weeks at $25^{\circ}C$ of incubation temperature. It was shown that the cumulative $CO_2$ were 207.1 to $255.2g\;CO_2/m^2$ for biochar input treatments and $258.6g\;CO_2/m^2$ for the control after experimental periods. The cumulative $CO_2$ emission was slightly decreased in biochar input treatment compared to the control. It was appeared that cumulative $N_2O$ emissions were $2,890.6mg\;N_2O/m^2$ for control, 379.7 to $525.2mg\;N_2O/m^2$ for biochar input treatment at the end of experiment. All biochar treatments were found to significantly reduce $N_2O$ emission by 82~87%. Consequently the biochar from byproducts such as pear branch, rice hull and bean straw could suppress the soil $N_2O$ emission. The results from the study imply that biochar can be utilized to reduce greenhouse gas emission from the upland field.
The objective of this work is to numerically reveal the effect of equivalence ratio change on the simultaneous reduction of NOX and soot emissions from the simulated-EGR compression ignition engine containing CO2. An experiment was conducted by using a single-cylinder common-rail injection system engine, an intake control system, and exhaust emissions analyzers. The numerical analysis results were validated under the same experimental conditions. To investigate the effect of equivalence ratio by simulated-EGR containing CO2, the O2, N2, and CO2 mole fraction were changed in the initial air conditions to the cylinder. The results were analyzed in terms of peak cylinder pressure, indicated mean effective pressure, indicated specific nitrogen oxide, and indicated specific soot. It was revealed that ignition delay characteristics and heat release rate (ROHR) characteristics were not significantly different according to the equivalence ratio. However, as the equivalence ratio increased from 0.68 to 0.83, the maximum combustion pressure and IMEP decreased by about 6.5% and 9.4%, respectively. In the case of ISFC, as is well known, the trend is opposite of IMEP. In the case of ISNO, as the equivalence ratio increased, less NO was generated, and as the equivalence ratio increased by 0.05, the ISSoot value of about 10% increased.
This paper attempts to estimate and compare environmental Kuznets curves (EKC) for$CO_2$ emissions of five regions constituting South Korea. For this, panel data of $CO_2$ emission for these regions are constucted for the period 1990 - 2007. Close inter-dependency among these five regions is considered by using a seemingly unrelated regression (SUR) model. In addition to real per-capita income, price index of energy sources and population dens ity are included as control variables. Results of estimates show the robust existence of EKC's in all these regions. EKC turning points of five regions range between 13.7 and 21.6 million Korean Won, showing a large variation. This difference among regions should be conisidered for the effective implementation of policies targeting the reduction of $CO_2$ emmission. In addition, the increase of energy price is found help reduce the $CO_2$ emmision while the rise of population density seems to lead to the increase of $CO_2$ emission.

In Korea, five major ports have been designated as sulfur oxide emission control areas to reduce air pollutant emissions, in accordance with Article 10 of the "Special Act on Port Air Quality" and Article 32 of the "Ship Pollution Prevention Regulations". As regulations against vessel-originated air pollutants (such as PM, CO2, NOx, and SOx) have been strengthened, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries(MOF) enacted rules that newly built public ships should adopt eco-friendly propulsion systems. However, particularly in diesel-electric hybrid propulsion systems, the demand for precise control schemes continues to grow as the fuel saving rate significantly varies depending on the control strategy applied. The conventional Power Take In-Power Take Off(PTI - PTO) mode control adopts a rule-based strategy, but this strategy is applied only in the low-load range and PTI mode; thus, an additional method is required to determine the optimal fuel consumption point. The proposed control method is designed to optimize fuel consumption by applying the equivalent consumption minimization strategy(ECMS) to the PTI - PTO mode by considering the characteristics of the specific fuel oil consumption(SFOC) of the engine in a diesel-electric hybrid propulsion system. To apply this method, a specific fishing vessel model operating on the Korean coast was selected to simulate the load operation environment of the ship. In this study, a 10.2% reduction was achieved in the MATLAB/SimDrive and SimElectric simulation by comparing the fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of the ship to which the conventional rule-based strategy was applied and that to which the ECMS was applied.
