Damage in brittle rock due to stress increase starts from initiation of microcracks, and then results in failure by forming macro failure planes due to propagation and coalescence of these discrete cracks. Conventionally, continuum approaches using macro-failure criteria or a number of elasto-plastic models have been major solution to implement rock damage and failure. However, actual brittle failure processes can be better described in phenomenological approach if initiation and propagation of discrete fractures are explicitly considered. This study presents damage and failure process of rock using a boundary element code, FRACOD, which has been developed to model fracturing process of rocks. Through a series of numerical uniaxial compressive tests, the feasibility of the developed model was verified, and realistic rock failure process was reproduced considering scale effects in rocks. In addition, the fracturing process and the corresponding rock damage in the vicinity of deep shaft in rock mass were presented as an application of this approach. This approach will be expected to contribute to finding better engineering solutions for the analysis of stability problems in brittle rock masses.

In this paper, the seismic behavior of shear wal-frame systems is analyzed. The governing equations of the wall-frame systems with outrigger truss are formulated through the continuum approach and the whole structure is idealized as a shear-flexural cantileverwith rotational spring. The effect of shear deformation and flexural deformation of the wall-frame and outrigger trusses are considered and incorporated in the formulation of the wall-frame structures with and without outriggers are compared by using finite element analysis incorporated with the Newmark-${\beta}$ method. Numerical results are obtained and compared with the finite element package MIDAS. The proposed method is found to be simple and efficient, and provides reason ably accurate results in the early design stage of tall building structures.
For predicting magnetic signals due to the remanent magnetization distributed on a ferromagnetic ship hull, this paper presents an efficient methodology for solving inverse problems, where the material sensitivity analysis based on the continuum mechanics is combined with the equivalent magnetic models. To achieve this, the 3D magnetic charge model and the magnetic dipole moment model are introduced and material sensitivity formulae applicable to each equivalent model are derived. The formulae offer the first-order gradient information of an objective function with respect to the variation of the magnetic charge or magnetic dipole and so an optimal solution can be easily obtained regardless of the number of design variables. To validate the proposed method, the numerical results are comparison with the real measurements of a mock-up model.

Based on the continuum approach, an investigation is made to get the forces and displacements of laterally loaded outrigger braced structures with a pair of coupled cores, and to show the effect of stiffening outriggers on the behavior of the structure. From the condition that the rotation of the core at the outrigger level is matched with the rotation of the corresponding outrigger, the outrigger restraining moment is derived analytically. From this, the core moment diagram, the column axial forces, and the horizontal displacements of the structure may be determined. Comparisons with the results by the program MIDAS-GEN for the structural models, have shown that this analysis can give reasonably accurate results for outrigger-braced structures with a pair of coupled cores. And a lateral displacement at the top of the structure is influenced by the outrigger location than the core location. Although the formulae are accurate only for idealized outrigger braced structures, they have a useful practical purpose in providing a guide to the behavior, and for making approximate estimates of the forces and displacements, in practical outrigger braced structures with a pair of coupled cores.
The initiation and growth of microcracks or microvoids inside concrete results in the progressive degradation of concrete. This damage processing along processing along with plastic deformation is main cause of nonlinear behavior of concrete. In this study, a continuum damage model of concrete is developed for the analysis of the nonlinear behavior of concrete due to damage and elasto-plastic deformation. Anisotropic damage tensor is used to describe the anisotropy of concrete and hypothesis of equivalent elastic energy is used to define the effective elastic tensor. The damage model including the damage evolution law and constitutive equation is derived with damage variable and damage surface which is defined by damage energy release rate by using the Helmholtz free energy and dissipation potential based on the thermodynamic principles. By adopting a typical plasticity model of concrete, plasticity of concrete is included to this model. Afinite element analysis program implemented with this model was developed and finite element analysis was performed for the analyses of concrete subjected to uniaxial and biaxial loadings. Comparison of the results of analysis with those of experiments and other models shows that the model successfully predicts the nonlinear behavior of concrete.
Thermal flow through jointed rock mass was analyzed by numerical methods. The effect of a single set of joints on the heat conduction was analyzed by one-dimensional model and compared with the analytical solution. When a joint is completely dry, the joint behaves as a thermal break inducing jumps in temperature distribution even at steady state. Therefore when joints are completely dry, individual joint has to be taken into consideration to get a good result. When joints are partially or fully saturated, the thermal conductivity of the joints increases drastically and the jumps in temperature distribution become less severe. Therefore the effect of joint in heat conduction can be well absorbed by continuum anisotropic model whose thermal properties represent overall thermal properties of the intact part and the discontinuities. Since the effect of joints becomes less important as the degree of the saturation increases, the overall thermal response of the rock mass also becomes close to isotropic. Therefore it can be concluded that a great effort has to be made to obtain a precise in-situ thermal properties in order to get a good prediction of the thermal response of a jointed rock mass.
As the pulse heights from a NaI(Tl) detector vary with the temperature of the measuring environment a significant change in temperature may affect the energy calibration of the spectrometer. The auto-adjustment of the channel corresponding to a pulse heights can be achieved by introducing an external reference source to compensate the temperature dependency of pulse heights, but unfavorable increases of the Compton continuum are caused due to the external source. In this study, the total absorption peaks dominant in the typical environmental gamma spectrum-239 keV from $^{212}Pb$, 351 keV from $^{214}Pb$, 1460 keV from $^{40}K$ and 2614 keV from $^{208}Tl$ for examples - were used as reference in the correction of energy calibration. With these peaks, the program to calibrate the energy of the s spectrum was developed using Microsoft Visual Basic language. The program developed here was applied to the environmental spectra measured at intervals of 30 minutes in the temperature range of from $-20^{\circ}C$ to $10^{\circ}C$ to demonstrate the validity and applicability. As a result of the test, the correction scheme appeared to be effective in the temperature changes encountered in the usual environment.
We present a 1.1mm emission map of the OMC1 region observed with AzTEC, a new large-format array composed of 144 silicon-nitride micromesh bolometers, that was in use at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). These AzTEC observations reveal dozens of cloud cores and a tail of filaments in a manner that is almost identical to the submillimeter continuum emission of the entire OMC1 region at 450 and $850{\mu}m$. We perform Fourier analysis of the image with a modified periodogram and the density power spectrum, which provides the distribution of the length scale of the structures, is determined. The expected value of the periodogram converges to the resulting power spectrum in the mean squared sense. The present analysis reveals that the power spectrum steepens at relatively smaller scales. At larger scales, the spectrum flattens and the power law becomes shallower. The power spectra of the 1.1mm emission show clear deviations from a single power law. We find that at least three components of power law might be fitted to the calculated power spectrum of the 1.1mm emission. The slope of the best fit power law, ${\gamma}{\approx}-2.7$ is similar to those values found in numerical simulations. The effect of beam size and the noise spectrum on the shape and slope of the power spectrum are also included in the present analysis. The slope of the power law changes significantly at higher spatial frequency as the beam size increases.

MIRIS (Multi-purpose Infrared Imaging System) is the primary payload on the Korean science and technology satellite, STSAT-3, which was launched on 2013 November 21. It is designed to observe the near-infrared sky with a $3.67^{\circ}{\times}3.67^{\circ}$ field of view and a $51.6^{{\prime}{\prime}}{\times}51.6^{{\prime}{\prime}}$ pixel resolution. Using two narrow-band filters at $1.88{\mu}m$ (Pa ${\alpha}$ line) and $1.84+1.92{\mu}m$ (Pa ${\alpha}$ dual continuum), the Paschen ${\alpha}$ Galactic plane survey has been carrying out, and the area for the Galactic longitude from $+280^{\circ}$ to $+100^{\circ}$ (with the width of $-3^{\circ}$ < b < $+3^{\circ}$) has been covered by 2014 August 31. In this contribution, we present the preliminary results of the MIRIS Paschen ${\alpha}$ emission maps and compare them with other wavelength maps such as $H{\alpha}$ and dust maps. Many of the Paschen ${\alpha}$ features have been detected along the plane, and some of them are weak or invisible in the $H{\alpha}$ map and coincide well with dense cloud regions.

CS molecule as an important tracer for studying inward motions in dense cores is known to be adsorbed onto dusts in cold (T~10K) dense cores, resulting in its significant depletion in the central region of the cores which may hamper a proper study of kinematics stage of star formation. In this study we choose five 'evolved' dense starless cores, L1544, L1552, L1689B, L694-2 and L1197, to investigate how depletion of CS molecule is significant and how the molecule differentiates depending on the evolutional status of the dense cores, by using a rare isotopomer C34S. We performed mapping observations in C34S (J=2-1) and N2H+ (J=1-0) with Nobeyama 45 m telescope, and compared $850{\mu}m$ continuum data as a reference of the density distribution of the dense cores. Our data confirm the claim that CS molecule generally depletes out in the central region in dense starless cores, while N2H+ keeps abundant as they get evolved. All of integrated intensity maps show 'semi-ring-like' depletion holes in CS, and all of abundance radial profiles show decrease toward center. The CS depletion and molecular chemical differentiation seems to depend on the evolutional status in dense cores. The evolved cores shows low abundance at both central and outer regions, implying that in the case of highly evolved cores CS freeze-out occurs over the most area of the cores.
