In this study, an experimental investigation is performed for evaluation of a liquid pool spreading model with continuous release. The model considered in this study was developed based on a concept which means that the liquid pool spreading is governed by a balance between an inertia force from gravity and a frictional force from friction with the ground under the whole base of the liquid pool. For evaluation of the model, experimental study is performed. Experimental apparatus is setup for measuring release rate, spreading velocity, and evaporation rate from a liquid pool. The experimental results are compared with results from the model. By applying release and evaporation rates obtained from experiments to solving the model, liquid pool radius variation according to time can be obtained. For evaluation of an effect of friction force in the spreading model, results obtained from the models with and without the friction force are compared with those obtained from the experiments. As a result, it is shown that there exists a large deviation between the results obtained from the model without the friction force and the experimental results. On the other hand, the tendency of liquid pool radius variation according to time is similar between the results obtained from the model without the friction force and the experimental results.

Baker's yeast was disrupted in a 1.4-L stainless steel horizontal bead mill under a continuous recycle mode using 0.3 mm diameter zirconia beads as abrasive. A single pass in continuous mode bead mill operation liberates half of the maximally released protein. The maximum total protein release can only be achieved after passaging the cells 5 times through the disruption chamber. The degree of cell disruption was increased with the increase in feeding rate, but the total protein release was highest at the middle range of feeding rate (45 L/h). The total protein release was increased with an increase in biomass concentration from 10 to $50\%$(w/v). However, higher heat dissipation as a result of high viscosity of concentrated biomass led to the denaturation of labile protein such as glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH). As a result the highest specific activity of G6PDH was achieved at biomass concentration of $20\%$(ww/v). Generally, the degree of cell disruption and total protein released were increased with an increase in impeller tip speed, but the specific activity of G6PDH was decreased substantially at higher impeller tip speed (14 m/s). Both the degree of cell disruption and total protein release increased, as the bead loading increased from 75 to $85\% (v/v)$. Hence, in order to obtain a higher yield of labile protein such as G6PDH, the yeast cell should not be disrupted at biomass concentration and impeller tip speed higher than $20\%(w/v)$ and 10 m/s, respectively.
We have reported that hypoxia stimulates EDRF(s) release from endothelial cells and the release may be augmented by previous hypoxia. As a mechanism, it was hypothesized that reoxygenation can stimulate EDRF(s) release from endothelial cells and we tested the hypothesis via bioassay experiment. In the bioassay experiment, rabbit aorta with endothelium was used as EDRF donor vessel and rabbit carotid artery without endothelium as a bioassay test ring. The test ring was contracted by prostaglandin $F_{2a}\;(3{\times}10^{-6}\;M)$ which was added to the solution perfusing through the aorta. Hypoxia was evoked by switching the solution aerated with 95% $O_2/5%\;CO_2$ mixed gas to one aerated with 95% $O_2/5%\;CO_2$ mixed gas. Hypoxia/reoxygenation were interexchanged at intervals of 2 minutes (intermittent hypoxia). In some experiments, endothelial cells were exposed to 10-minute hypoxia (continuous hypoxia) and then exposed to reoxygenation and intermittent hypoxia. In other experiments, the duration of reoxygenation was extended from 2 minutes to 5 minutes. When the donor aorta was exposed to intermittent hypoxia, hypoxia stimulated EDRF(s) release from endothelial cells and the hypoxia-induced EDRF(s) release was augmented by previous hypoxia/reoxygenation. When the donor aorta was exposed to continuous hypoxia, there was no increase of hypoxia-induced EDRF(s) release during hypoxia. But, after the donor aorta was exposed to reoxygenation, hypoxia-induced EDRF(s) release was markedly increased. When the donor aorta was pretreated with nitro-L-arginine $(10^{-5}$ M for 30 minutes), the initial hypoxia-induced EDRF(s) release was almost completely abolished, but the mechanism for EDRF(s) release by the reoxygenation and subsequent hypoxia still remained to be clarified. TEA also blocked incompletely hypoxia-induced and hypoxia/reoxygenation-induced EDRF(s) release. EDRF(s) release by repetitive hypoxia and reoxygenation was completely blocked by the combined treatment with nitro-L-arginine and TEA. Cytochrome P450 blocker, SKF-525A, inhibited the EDRF(s) release reversibly and endothelin antgonists, BQ 123 and BQ 788, had no effect on the release of endothelium-derived vasoactive factors. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase inhibited the EDRF(s) release from endothelial cells. From these data, it could be concluded that reoxygenation stimulates EDRF(s) release and hypoxia/reoxygenation can release not only NO but also another EDRF from endothelial cells by the production of oxygen free radicals.

Objective : Fibrin sealants have been used for hemostasis, sealant for cerebrospinal fluid leakage, and adhesive barrier in neurosurgery. Further, as its clinical use and role of an effective drug delivery vehicle have been proposed. This study was performed to measure antibacterial activity and continuous local antibiotic release from different concentrations of vancomycin-impregnated fibrin sealant in vitro. Methods : Antibacterial activity was investigated by disk diffusion test by measuring the diameter of the growth inhibition zone of bacteria (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, ATCC29213) from vancomycin-embedded fibrin sealant disc diluted at five different concentrations (C1-C5; 8.33, 4.167, 0.83, 0.083, and 0.0083 mg/disc, respectively). Continuous and conditioned release of vancomycin concentration (for 2 weeks and for 5 days, respectively) were also measured using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method. To mimic the physiologic wound conditions with in vitro, conditioned vancomycin release in phosphate buffer solution (PBS) was measured and replaced PBS for five consecutive days, half a day or completely daily. Results : In the disk diffusion test, the mean diameters of bacterial inhibition zone were 2.54±0.07 cm, 2.61±0.12 cm, and 2.13±0.15 cm (C1, C2, and C3 respectively) but 1.67±0.06 cm and 1.23±0.15 cm in C4 and C5, respectively. Continuous elution test elicited the peak release of vancomycin from the fibrin sealant at 48 hours, with continued release until 2 weeks. However, conditioned vancomycin release decreased to half or more on day 2, however, the sustainable release was measured over the therapeutic dose (10-20 ㎍/mL) for 5 days and 4 days in assays of half and total exchange of PBS. Conclusion : This study suggests that fibrin sealant can provide an efficient vehicle for antibiotic drug release in a wide range of neurosurgical procedures and the safe and effective therapeutic dose will be at the concentration embedded of 4.167 mg/disc or more of vancomycin.
This study analyzed dispersion characteristics and toxic effect in the small-scale continuous release of chlorine gas. We found that the Gaussian model using the Briggs' dispersion coefficient and the effective release height was better predicting experiments than the BM model. From chlorine concentrations calculated by Gaussian model, simulation results showed that the dispersion of chlorine was more affected by atmospheric stability and wind speed than release rate and that the toxic effect of chlorine gas was similar to the effect of parameters on chlorine dispersion. From effected areas with toxic criteria, damaged areas could be estimated to protect human.

The importance of environmental water has been risen in terms of river ecosystem soundness with preventing stream flow depletion in rural area, while enlarging agricultural reservoir project is conducted under the 4 main river restoration project for supplying more water to 4 main rivers. The aim of this study was to estimate the amount of environmental water release and analyze the release pattern during non-irrigation season in enlarged agricultural reservoirs. The 4 reservoirs (Dansan, Samga, Geumbong, Changpyeong) located on the upper region of Nakdong river were simulated applying the operation rule which was determined by release criteria curves. The simulated results indicated that the more environmental water could be released than the spillway release and continuous release was achieved with smaller range of fluctuation. In case of Changpyeong reservoir, average 506.0 thousand $m^3$ environmental water could be released on Feb., and it was about twice as much as the spillway release before the enlargement, and also, the 18 thousand $m^3$/day environmental water could be supplied to a stream consistently after enlargement. From the results, it was expected that the additional environmental water release will improve stream water flow during dry season in terms of quantity and quality of water.
Organic drugs including aspirin, omeprazole, and naproxen with three different levels of octanol/water partition coefficient were examined for their release behavior from the amphiphilic PCL-b-PEO-b-PCL (PCEC) matrix. Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of PCEC illustrated a well defined two-phase morphology consisted of dispersed poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) domain and continuous polycaprolactone (PCL) phase. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffractometry (XRD) experiments veri tied that three model drugs are dissolved as a molecular dispersion in PCEC matrix. The release of hydrophilic aspirin closely followed the water absorption profile of the matrix indicating that its major fraction is present in PEO domain. However, substantial amount of aspirin present in less hydrophilic region displayed discontinuous biphasic release pattern. In the case of omeprazole with intermediate hydrophobicity consistent release behavior was observed for a period of 24 hrs after the rapid liberation of ca. 10% of the drug presumably partitioned in PEO phase. It was ascribed to the fact that the progressive hydration of PCEC matrix gradually increased the chance of drug/water exposure to compensate the exhaustion of device. Naproxen with the highest octanol/water distribution coefficient among three model drugs exhibited a limited release of 35% for 24 hrs. Finally, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose phthalate (HPMCP)/PCEC blend matrix demonstrated an accelerated and quantitative release of hydrophobic naproxen by generating high porosity and thereby expanding polymer/water interface.
To develop topical nitroglycerin (NTG) preparation far chronic anal fissure treatment, the release rate of NTG should be controlled carefully. For this, microemulsion was prepared from the phase diagram construction with Cremophor ELP, ethanol and Labrafil $M1944CS^{(R)}$ and the topical gel was prepared by dispersing NTG containing microemulsion into hydrophilic polymers. in viかo release characteristics were evaluated with Franz diffusion cell using cellulose membrane and compared with control hydrogels. The release rate of NTG was followed $1^{st}$ order kinetics and, when comparing the NTG release from control hydrogel with that from the microemulsion-based hydrogel, the NTG release rate was controlled by the content of polymers within continuous phase and the concentration of dispersed phase.
The present study was designed: (1) to determine whether or not hypoxia stimulates the release of endothelium-derived relaxing factors (EDRFs) from endothelial cells, and (2) to examine whether or not the hypoxia-induced EDRFs release is further augmented by previous hypoxia-reoxygenation, using bioassay system. In the bioassay experiment, rabbit aorta with endothelium was used as EDRFs donor vessel and rabbit carotid artery without endothelium as a bioassay test ring. The test ring was contracted by prostaglandin $F_{2{\alpha}}$$(3{\times}10^{-6}\;M/L)$, which was added to the solution perfusing through the aortic segment. Hypoxia was evoked by switching the solution aerated with 95% $O_2/5%\;CO_2$ mixed gas to one aerated with 95% $N_2/5%\;CO_2$ mixed gas. When the contraction induced by prostaglandin $F_{2{\alpha}}$ reached a steady state, the solution was exchanged for hypoxic one. And then, hypoxia and reoxygenation were interchanged at intervals of 2 minutes (intermittent hypoxia). The endothelial cells were also exposed to single 10-minute hypoxia (continuous hypoxia). When the bioassay ring was superfused with the perfusate through intact aorta, hypoxia relaxed the precontracted bioassay test ring markedly. Whereas, when bioassay ring was superfused with the perfusate through denuded aorta or polyethylene tubing, hypoxia relaxed the precontracted ring slightly. The relaxation was not inhibited by indomethacin but by nitro-L-arginine or methylene blue. The hypoxia-induced relaxation was further augmented by previous hypoxia-reoxygenation and the magnitude of the relaxation by intermittent hypoxia was significantly greater than that of the relaxation by continuous hypoxia. The results suggest that hypoxia stimulates EDNO release from endothelial cells and that the hypoxia-induced EDNO release is further augmented by previous hypoxia-reoxygenation.
We measured change of peripheral skin temperature and mean skin temperature when the upper arm and thigh are pressured in order to know the effect of skin pressure applied by clothing on blood circulation. After release from pressure, we observed also recovery condition. At the same time, we examined relation between pressure and a feeling of thightness. Three physiques of healthy females, namely slender, standard and plump, served as subjects. We used continuous restraint method with skin pressure applied by experimental fabric for 10 min. As a result of this experiment, we obtained following findings. 1. The significant difference was marked at the pressure, measuring time and physique with change of skin temperature under upper arm restraint. The peripheral and mean skin temperature decreased with the lapse of restraint time. A remarkable tendency observed according to the increase of restraint pressure. Recovery condition after release from pressure not yet recovered to original state, for all after a lapse of 10 min. 2. The significant difference was marked at the pressure, measuring time and physique with change of skin temperature under thigh restraint, especially different physique was remarkable among them. The peripheral skin temperature decreased or decreased. Recovery condition after release from pressure was the same upper arm. 3. Main factor affecting the evaluation of a feeling of tightness was restraint pressure. The value of pressure sensation made remarkable declined after a lapse of 10 min restraint time. Individual differences, however, were shown in pressure sensation.
