  • This study presents the findings of the structural health monitoring and the real time system identification of one of the first large scale building instrumentations in Turkey for earthquake safety. Within this context, a thorough review of steps in the instrumentation, monitoring is presented and seismic performance evaluation of structures using both nonlinear pushover and nonlinear dynamic time history analysis is carried out. The sensor locations are determined using the optimal sensor placement techniques used in NASA for on orbit modal identification of large space structures. System identification is carried out via the stochastic subspace technique. The results of the study show that under ambient vibrations, stocky buildings can be substantially stiffer than what is predicted by the finite element models due to the presence of a large number of partitioning walls. However, in a severe earthquake, it will not be safe to rely on this resistance due to the fact that once the partitioning walls crack, the bare frame contributes to the lateral stiffness of the building alone. Consequently, the periods obtained from system identification will be closer to those obtained from the FE analysis. A technique to control the validity of the proportional damping assumption is employed that checks the presence of phase difference in displacements of different stories obtained from band pass filtered records and it is confirmed that the "proportional damping assumption" is valid for this structure. Two different techniques are implemented for identifying the influence of the soil structure interaction. The first technique uses the transfer function between the roof and the basement in both directions. The second technique uses a pre-whitening filter on the data obtained from both the basement and the roof. Subsequently the impulse response function is computed from the scaled cross correlation between the input and the output. The overall results showed that the structure will satisfy the life safety performance level in a future earthquake but some soil structure interaction effects should be expected in the North South direction.

  • As a result of the popularization of smart devices, smart phones or the tablets have become necessities in modern society. In this current of the times, the bring-your-own-device environment, in which personally owned smart devices are utilized in life, is attracting attention. In this context, this paper designed a Wi-Fi remote ordering system focused on the BYOD environment. If the Wi-Fi remote ordering system based on the BYOD environment is popularized, positive effects can be expected such as the enhancement of efficiency and the increase of customer benefits. As a typical example, real-time customer requests via smart devices enable the provision of fast services. This paper designed a mobile app for customers' remote ordering and web pages on which member stores can inquire details of orders, manage a menu, and register statistical data on sales. If the Wi-Fi remote ordering system designed by this paper is widely distributed internationally, it is expected that the system will be used usefully by many people.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate a process of change which was made by a science teacher for one-year long in-service education program in terms of constructivist teaching behaviors and beliefs. The in-service program was featured by the use of learning cycle model and Science-Technology-Society approach. One of science teachers, who attended an one-year long in-service program was selected for this study. She developed three teaching materials for the duration. The three teaching materials were analyzed to find components of Science-Technology-Society and the integration of science content and real life context. Also, an interview was performed to assess changes in her perspectives on science, science teaching and science learning through the program. The first material was constructed in the form of learning cycle with little emphasis on STS. The second material was embedded with personal matters such as a refrigerator. The final one was shown to be organized with science content in a personal context and with focus on the role play. The interview also showed that her perspectives on science and science teaching have changed toward the constructivist's during the participation in the in-service program. It is suggested that a long-term in-service program should be developed and implemented so that the science teachers may become constructivist teachers.

  • Practicality and value of mathematics can be verified when different problems that we face in life are resolved through mathematical knowledge. This study intends to identify whether the fraction teaching is being taught and learned at current elementary schools for students to recognize practicality and value of mathematical knowledge and to have the ability to apply the concept when solving problems in the real world. Accordingly, contextual problems and noncontextual problems are proposed around fractional arithmetic area, and compared and analyze the achievement level and problem solving processes of them. Analysis showed that there was significant difference in achievement level and solving process between contextual problems and noncontextual problems. To instruct more meaningful learning for student, contextual problems including historical context or practical situation should be presented for students to experience mathematics of creating mathematical knowledge on their own.

  • Ministry of Education has proposed storytelling in context of the actual or fantasy for the sake of fun and easy mathematics education. However most of school mathematics is not associated with the real life. In that case it could be one method for cultivating positive affects about mathematics that we make up and apply mathematics narrative with which we can reveal what makes mathematics interesting. In this study, among every problem in every examination in four regular examination that targeted the first-year of one ordinary high school in Seoul, I elected a total of four problems, and wrote a total 4 of mathematics narratives. I analysed a case on a few students with which I had conversations after teaching those 4 number of mathematics narratives, and studied mathematics narrative's influences on affects about mathematics of ordinary high school students. As a result, from one of a few students we could observe that his mathematical emotional mind had varied positively. From the student and the other students who had been engaged I discussed some implications and some points to be improved about making up and applying mathematics narrative for cultivating positive affects about mathematics.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the essence of ratio concept from educational viewpoint. For this purpose, it was tried to examine contents and organizations of the recent teaching of ratio concept in elementary school text of Korea from ‘Syllabus Period’ to ‘the 7th Curriculum Period’ In these text most ratio problems were numerically and algorithmically approached. So the Wiskobas programme was introduced, in which the focal point was not on mathematics as a closed system but on the activity, on the process of mathematization and the subject ‘ratio’ was assigned an important place. There are some educational implications of this study which needs to be mentioned. First, the programme for developing proportional reasoning should be introduced early Many students have a substantial amount of prior knowledge of proportional reasoning. Second, conventional symbol and algorithmic method should be introduced after students have had the opportunity to go through many experiences in intuitive and conceptual way. Third, context problems and real-life situations should be required both to constitute and to apply ratio concept. While working on contort problems the students can develop proportional reasoning and understanding. Fourth, In order to assist student's learning process of ratio concept, visual models have to recommend to use.

  • The combination of multiple antennas and multi-carrier code division multiple-access (MC-CDMA) is a strong candidate for the downlink of the next generation mobile communications. The study of such systems in scenarios that model real-life trans-missions is an additional step towards an optimized achievement. We consider a realistic MIMO channel with two or four transmit antennas and up to two receive antennas, and channel state information (CSI) mismatches. Depending on the mobile terminal (MT) class, its number of antennas or complexity allowed, different data-rates are proposed with turbo-coding and asymptotic spectral efficiencies from 1 to 4.5 bit/s/Hz, using three algorithms developed within the European IST-MATRICE project. These algorithms can be classified according to the degree of CSI at base-station (BS): i) Transmit space-frequency prefiltering based on constrained zero-forcing algorithm with complete CSI at BS; ii) transmit beamforming based on spatial correlation matrix estimation from partial CSI at BS; iii) orthogonal space-time block coding based on Alamouti scheme without CSI at BS. All presented schemes require a reasonable complexity at MT, and are compatible with a single-antenna receiver. A choice between these algorithms is proposed in order to significantly improve the performance of MC-CDMA and to cover the different environments considered for the next generation cellular systems. For beyond-3G, we propose prefiltering for indoor and pedestrian microcell environments, beamforming for suburban macrocells including high-speed train, and space-time coding for urban conditions with moderate to high speeds.

  • Health is an outset of psychological, social, financial, and physical state. Several macroeconomic factors are entangled with health and mortality. Infant mortality and life expectancy are two keyguard on demographic research context on last few decades. On the other hand, foreign inflows play an unprecedent role for raising economic circulation and providing more opportunities to build a better society. The study aims to investigate the relationship between foreign direct investment (FDI), economic growth, and Bangladesh's health. This study employs time-series data from 1980 to 2018. Results show, with Auto-regressive Distribute Lag (ARDL) model, that there is significant cointegration among variables. Foreign investment and economic output relate significantly and positively to health. On the contrary, education is quasi-linked with a different sign-on different model. For model validation, pitfalls of time-series multicollinearity, heteroscedasiticy, and autocorrelation are not present. Also, CUSUM and CUSUMSQ tests are validating the model as stable and fit for future prediction. Medical assessment and education need more attention from the government as well as the private sector. FDI can play a catalyst role for improving the health sector, raising opportunity in educating and creating a better lifestyle. In order to optimize foreign investment, the government should implement necessary reforms and policies.

  • Philosophical counseling, established by Achenbach in 1981, began as "philosophical practice" and emerged only recently as a new field of philosophy in its own right. It attempts, by recasting the philosopher as a counselor, to bring philosophy back from academia and recover the ancient notion of "doing philosophy," in a real-life context. Furthermore, it allows clients who are at a critical moment in their life a chance to revive their authentic selves and empowers them to pursue their own path. By engaging with philosophical counseling, clients are more likely to realize their hopes for their lives by examining their lives thoroughly and facing them anew. This paper first attempts to investigate philosophical counseling services for Korean women and to outline a new model of counseling based on the combination of two models of counseling, philosophical counseling and feminist counseling. In the second chapter, it seeks to introduce the history and characteristics of philosophical counseling and in the third chapter, the history and characteristics of feminist counseling are investigated, focusing on a counseling-activity entitled "Telephone for Women." Finally, in the fourth chapter, a comparative study is made by identifying the common aspects of each counseling type, in order to promote the shared outlooks of both counseling models. Although these two models of counseling emerged from different historical, social, and cultural contexts, they were founded according to four common beliefs, which are as follows: first, a focus on the importance of "practice," second, the establishment of an equal relationship between the counselor and the client, third, the importance of counselors listening attentively to the client and opening themselves up, fourth, the encouragement of clients becoming truly themselves and self-educated. Therefore, the writer believes that these two models of counseling are both aiming at the realization of an authentic "human life." It is hoped that philosophical counseling will give Korean women an opportunity to maintain a dialogue that will improve their "well-being" in the future.

  • Comparison of curriculum between various countries is a major research method for studying a course and content quoted on Korea's national curriculum. Therefore this research focuses on comparing and analyzing a new curriculum which Australia has announced on 2012 and conducting since 2015. From this research result, we found that Australia's curriculum achievement shows some unique characteristics. Such examples can be dealing a concept with real life context and proposing a mathematical content specifically. Also they introduce the definite integral by defining to the sum of series. There are other characteristics such as modelling motion, and numerical integration which Korea's highschool curriculum achievement doesn't deal with, and the content of vector calculus is handled more deeply. As a result of analyzing Australia's textbook, it fully deals with the supplementary notion to help understand mathematical definition. Hence further research will be needed later on to relieve the aspect of cognitive burden on Korean learners.
