Estimation of Corn Growth by Radar Scatterometer Data

  • Ground-based polarimetric scatterometers have been effective tools to monitor the growth of crop with multi-polarization and frequencies and various incident angles. An important advantage of these systems that can be exploited is temporal observation of a specific crop target. Polarimetric backscatter data at L-, C- and X-bands were acquired every 10 minutes. We analyzed the relationships between L-, C- and X-band signatures, biophysical measurements over the whole corn growth period. The Vertical transmit and Vertical receive polarization (VV) backscattering coefficients for all bands were greater than those of the Horizontal transmit and Horizontal receive polarization (HH) until early-July, and then thereafter HH-polarization was greater than VV-polarization or Horizontal transmit and Vertical receive polarization (HV) until the harvesting stage (Day Of Year, DOY 240). The results of correlation analysis between the backscattering coefficients for all bands and corn growth data showed that L-band HH-polarization (L-HH) was the most suited for monitoring the fresh weight ($r=0.95^{***}$), dry weight ($r=0.95^{***}$), leaf area index ($r=0.86^{**}$), and vegetation water content ($r=0.93^{***}$). Retrieval equations were developed for estimating corn growth parameters using L-HH. The results indicated that L-HH could be used for estimating the vegetation biophysical parameters considered here with high accuracy. Those results can be useful in determining frequency and polarization of satellite Synthetic Aperture Radar stem and in designing a future ground-based microwave system for a long-term monitoring of corn.

A Study on the Functional User Interface of the Korean Hisory Information System in the Knowledge Information Resource Management (지식정보자원관리사업 역사분야 정보시스템의 기능적 사용자 인터페이스에 대한 연구)

  • Since 2000, the Ministry of Information and Communication has spearhead the so-called Knowledge Information Resource Management Project to turn South Korea into an information-knowledge powerhouse. With the project, the ministry has digitalized major information content in various fields such as history, education, culture and science, enabling many people to benefit through the Internet. During the period,12 institutions have participated in the history fields, The participants are as follows: Muncheongak at Gyeongsang National University, Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, National Institute of Korean History, Independence Hall of Korea, Korean Classics Research Insitute, Korea Democracy Foundation, Gyujanggak Archives, Seoul National University, Jongyeonggak, Sungkyunkwan University, The War Memorial of Korea, Korean Studies Advancement Center, Korean Women's Development Institute, and The Academy of Korean Studies. Because the 12 information systems have different functional user interfaces, it is confusing for people to utilize them effectively That requires us to standardize the interfaces, which would improve the overall improvement in effectiveness. This paper compares each user interface of the 12 information systems to determine their similarities and differences in terms of how to search information and present results. This work will pave the way to build a standardized user interface .

A Study on the Development and Practical Application of LIS Textbooks (문헌정보학 교재개발방법 제안 및 실제적용에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to perform research on the development of core course textbooks in the LIS field. The process of textbook development proposed in this study can also be a useful reference for developing the textbooks for other, non-core courses. The textbook development procedure used was as follows; 1) investigating and analyzing the main textbooks of LIS core courses domestically and abroad, 2) deriving optimal curriculum content from job analysis results, 3) gathering comment and feedback from professors teaching core courses, 4) proposing a final, three-tiered table of contents for an optimal textbook. The textbook table of contents proposed as a result of this research relates to the core subjects of: Introduction to Library and Information Science, Information Services, Library Management, Information Organization, Information Retrieval, and Library Fieldwork. We suggested chapter and section levels for all subjects, and list all of the details that should be dealt with in each section; instructors are then able to select from these options at their discretion.

A Dynamic Internet Address Model for Providing Customized Information (사용자 맞춤형 정보 제공을 위한 동적 인터넷 주소 모델)

  • The referents of internet addresses are no longer limited to web sites. A new address service by the international organization for the internet address (ICANN) introduces an open space for the TLD (Top Level Domain) strings so that each service, content, product, and other linguistic expressions may be allowed. The open TLD addresses are more suitable for representing the address of service units, contents, or products. In this paper, as an alternative to static Internet address service to return a consistent mapping result regardless of a user-specific different requirements, we design a dynamic internet address mapping model that returns mapping result to suit user particular requirements. In addition, we propose a method for implementing a internet address service without any changes in the existing domain protocols. It may implement a dynamic internet address by attaching to a encoded user's metadata and environment data within a internet address representation, and adding the module for dynamic mapping to the name servers. Through this proposal, trying to expand the functions of internet address, it is expected to be able to provide customized informaiton retrieval services for each user by using just internet address.

A Design of the Ontology for Enhanced Semantic Retrieval of Multimedia Contents (멀티미디어 콘텐츠의 강화된 의미 검색을 위한 온톨로지 설계)

  • In recent Information Environment, various Multimedia contents are getting noticed. But, since these contents have various formats of representation and very wide range of information, it was difficult to retrieve contents that user wanted and to utilize it. To solve these problems, many studies presented draft standards for adding metadata to contents, and then, semantic search for contents had become available. Unfortunately, as the number of metadata standards and contents increased, the lack of interoperability between contents was begun and users are faced with difficulty of search contents again. To improve these problems, this paper supports interoperability between metadata standards and expands the semantic relationship between elements and proposes an ontology which is named TOFIC(The Ontology For Imagery Contents) for enhanced semantic search. In TOFIC, the semantic relationships between MPEG-7 and TV-Anytime are classified, and extended new semantics are defined. As a result, semantic search for multimedia contents is enhanced and it is possible to retrieve most of the multimedia contents that exist on the current information environment consistently. In addition, it supports enhanced content-based search for multimedia contents.

  • Government Information Locator Service(GILS) allows the users to access and utilize government information by including the content description about the resource as well as the secondary information about the resources such as location and access method. The following problems have been identified, while analyzing the electronic government offered GILS to come up with the service improvement plan. Firstly, it was difficult to comprehend the record labels from the user interface point of view. There were errors in the retrieval result screens. Secondly, there were a number of missing items in the records. Thirdly, there was no explicit explanation on how to access the information. Lastly, there were no clearly explained reasons that certain information is non-disclosed or partially disclosed. Thus, it is necessary to deal with the identified problems by improving the information collection method; reorganizing the record items; heavily investing in the public relation activities; and improving the web-based access method if the revitalization of GILS is to be achieved.

Development of MPEG-7 Description-based Annotation Tool for Production of Semantic Multimedia Metadata (의미적 멀티미디어 메타데이터 생성을 위한 MPEG-7 기술기반 주석도구의 개발)

  • Recently, an increasing in quantity of multimedia data have brought a new problem that expected data should be retrieved fast and exactly. The adequate representation for the multimedia data is the key element for efficient retrieval. For this reason, MPEG-7 standard was established for description of multimedia data. In this paper, we propose a new approach to metadata production. The user can decompose a given content into units and easily annotate each unit by adding basic Information such as time, place, etc. as well as classification information such as event, relationship, etc. according to the MPEG-7 standard. The objective is to build automatically a pure semantic description; the nodes are the events and the links are the graphs which describe the relationships among the events. Finally, we have implemented an annotation tool(SMAT) for semantic description based on proposed technique and assess some of the experiment results. In conclusion, we ran say that the proposod annotation tool is characterized by two important proprieties : reusability and extendibility.

  • Gradual scene change detection is known as more difficult problem then abrupt scene change detection on video data analysis for contents based retrieval. In this paper, we present a new method for scene change detection far both abrupt and gradual change using the variable dynamic threshold arid cut frame difference (CFD). For this, We present the characteristics arid mathematical models of gradual transitions anti then, how can be detected by the CFD. And also we present new scene change detection algorithm based on cut frame difference. By the experimental result using real world video data indicate that the proposed method detect various scene changes both abrupt and gradual change efficiently without time-consuming computation and any dependency on a kind of gradual change effects.

  • Motion Information in a video clip often plays an important role in characterizing the content of the clip. A number of methods have been developed to analyze and retrieve video contents using motion information. However, most of these methods focused more on the analysis of direction or trajectory of motion but less on the analysis of the movement of an object. In this paper, we introduce the shape variation descriptor for describing shape variation caused by object movement along time, and propose a method to describe and retrieve the shape variation of the object using shape variation map. The experimental results shows that the proposed method performed much better than the previous method by l1% and is very effective for describing the shape variation which is applicable to semantic retrieval applications.

Design of Algorithm for Efficient Retrieve Pure Structure-Based Query Processing and Retrieve in Structured Document (구조적 문서의 효율적인 구조 질의 처리 및 검색을 위한 알고리즘의 설계)

  • Structure information contained in a structured document supports various access paths to document. In order to use structure information contained in a structured document, it is required to construct an index structural on document structures. Content indexing and structure indexing per document require high memory overhead. Therefore, processing of pure structure queries based on document structure like relationship between elements or element orders, low memory overhead for indexing are required. This paper suggests the GDIT(Global Document Instance Tree) data structure and indexing scheme about structure of document which supports low memory overhead for indexing and powerful types of user queries. The structure indexing scheme only index the lowest level element of document and does not effect number of document having retrieval element. Based on the index structure, we propose an query processing algorithm about pure structure, proof the indexing schemes keeps up indexing efficient in terms of space. The proposed index structure bases GDR concept and uses index technique based on GDIT.
