핫셀의 방사성오염물질 운반장치 설계를 위한 분석 (Analysis for designing a device to transport radioactive contaminated materials in hotcell)

  • During demonstrations of a process conditioning spent nuclear fuels, it may be necessary to transport modularized parts of process equipment out of a hot cell because of modules' failure or completion of demonstrations. It may be not easy to transport modules because modules will be contaminated. For this purpose, we have developed a prototype of a device transporting radioactive contaminated materials. We have analyzed conditions of a hot cell and requirements of the device, designed and manufactured a scaled-down prototype of the device, and done some performance tests such as running on the rail, running on the flat floor, and carrying capability of a sliding upper part. From the tests, it has been shown that running on the rail and floor was smooth but the sliding part was deflected if the sliding distance was long. These result will be reflected to a design of the improved transporting device which will be used during demonstrations.

매립지 침출수로 오염된 토양의 측정주파수에 따른 유전특성 변화 (Complex Dielectric Constant of Soil Contaminated by Landfill Leachate with Measured Frequency)

  • 매립지 침출수로 오염된 지반의 오염도 조사에 유전상수 측정기법의 적용성을 평가하기 위하여 매립지 침출수로 오염된 간극수를 포함한 사질토 지반의 유전특성을 분석하였다. 본 연구에서는 75kHz-12MHz 범위의 주파수에서 유전 상수를 실수부와 허수부로 구분하여 분석을 수행하였다. 유전상수 실수부는 공간전하분극과 배향분극의 발현정도에 영향을 받기 때문에 침출수 농도가 증가함에 따라 저주파 영역에서는 유전상수의 실수부 값이 증가하는 경향을 나타내었으나, 고주파 영역에서는 감소하는 경향을 나타내었다. 유전상수 허수부의 경우에는 측정 주파수에 관계없이 침출수의 농도가 증가함에 따라 전류전도에 의한 에너지 손실량이 증대되어 유전상수 허수부가 증가하는 경향을 나타내었다. 유전상수의 실수부와 허수부가 간극수 내 침출수 농도에 따라 변하는 것에 기초하여 유전상수 측정기법이 침출수로 오염된 지반의 오염도 평가에 효과적으로 적용될 수 있음을 확인하였다.

The Allelopathic Effects of Lantana camara on Seed Germination and Growth of Selected Bioassay Species

  • The allelopathic effects of Lantana camara L. (Family:Verbenaceae) on germination and seedling establishment of some agricultural crops and weed species have been identified. Aqueous extracts of dry leaves and contaminated soil where L. camara is grown were used to verify allelopathic effect on seed germination of five bioassay species; Raphanus sativas, Capsicum annum, Lycopersicum esculantem, Crotalaria juncia and Chromoleana odorata. Fifty seeds from each bioassay species were placed in a petri dish containing leaf extracts or contaminated soil, and seed germination were examined after 3 days. The plant house experiments were carried out to evaluate the impact of L. camara contaminated soil and leaf debris using L. esculantem as the indicator plant. Seed germination of L. esculentem, C. junica and Capsicum annum was significantly inhibited by L. camara contaminated soil. However, the degree of inhibition varied among the bioassay species. The aqueous extract of dry leaves of L. camara was highly phytotoxic and it significantly reduced seed germination of all bioassay species. There was a decline in plant height, leaf area and shoot dry weight of tomato only in early growth stages when grown in L. camara contaminated soils. However, incorporation of leaf debris into soil affected the vegetative growth of tomato in early stages when the leaf debris concentration was increased. Growth recovered at the latter part of the life cycle. On the basis of these results it can be concluded that the allelochemicals in L. camara contaminated soils are harmful to the seed germination of crop species. The adverse effect was present only during the early growth stages and it did not suppress the latter part of the plant growth. These responses are attributed to allelopathic effects which need confirmation under field conditions.

  • 비오염양분(非汚染郞分)에로의 오염물질(汚染物質)의 확산(擴散)을 방지(防止)하기위한 격수방법(格水方法)이 하나의 연립방정식(連立方程式)으로 구해졌다. 입식(立式)에 있어서 기본개념(基本槪念)은 오염부분과 비오염부분의 사이에 주변보다 높은 수위를 가지는 고수위(高水位)부분을 형성하는 것이며, 이 부분의 형성은 항해(降害)우물의 유효이용으로 이루어졌다. 양수된 지하수의 수질(水質)은 우물 5와 6의 수위(水位)에 따라서 결정되었다 우물 5와 6의 수위변화에 따른 양수속도(楊水速度)와 수질의 결정은 용수(用水)의 수요(需要) 및 함유된 오염물질의 제거(除去)능력과 그에 따른 실용(實用)을 고려함에 의해서 주어질 수 있다. 본 연구의 결과는 기지(旣知)의 오염원(汚染源)으로부터의 오염물질의 확산을 방지하는 것 뿐만아니라. 용수공급을 위한 계획의 수립에도 이용될 수 있을 것이다.

폐금속광산 지역의 비소오염토양 처리를 위한 선별 기술 적용 (Application of a Soil Separation System for the Remediation of Arsenic Contaminated Soil in a Metal Mining Area)

  • After the law has been enacted for the prevention and recovery of mining damage in 2005, efforts of remediation have been started to recover heavy metal contaminated soils in agricultural land near mining sites. As part of an effort, the upper part of cultivation layer has been treated through covering up with clean soil, but the heavy metal contamination could be still spreaded to the surrounding areas because heavy metals may be remained in the lower part of cultivation layers. In this study, the most frequently occurring arsenic (As) contamination was selected to study in agricultural land nearby an abandoned metal mining site. We applied separation technologies considering the differences in the physical characteristics of soil particles (particle size, density, magnetic properties, hydrophobicity, etc.). Based on physical and chemical properties of arsenic (As) containing particles in agricultural lands nearby mining sites, we applied sieve separation, specific gravity separation, magnetic separation, and flotation separation to remove arsenic (As)-containing particles in the contaminated soil. Results of this study show that the removal efficiency of arsenic (As) were higher in the order of the magnetic separation, flotation separation, specific gravity separation and sieve separation.

VOLUME REDUCTION OF DISMANTLED CONCRETE WASTES GENERATED FROM KRR-2 AND UCP

  • As part of a fundamental study on the volume reduction of contaminated concrete wastes, the separation characteristics of the aggregates and the distribution of the radioactivity in the aggregates were investigated. Radioisotope $^{60}Co$ was artificially used as a model contaminant for non-radioactive crushed concrete waste. Volume reduction for radioactively contaminated dismantled concrete wastes was carried out using activated heavy weight concrete taken from the Korea Research Reactor 2 (KRR-2) and light weight concrete from the Uranium Conversion Plant (UCP). The results showed that most of the $^{60}Co$ nuclide was easily separated from the contaminated dismantled concrete waste and was concentrated mainly in the porous fine cement paste. The heating temperature was found to be one of the effective parameters in the removal of the radionuclide from concrete waste. The volume reduction rate achieved was above 80% for the KRR-2 concrete wastes and above 75% for the UCP concrete wastes by thermal and mechanical treatment.

지하수내 질산성 질소의 In-situ Bioremediation을 위한 최적 Electron donor 결정에 관한 연구

  • As a part of our research project for in-situ bioremediation of nitrate contaminated. groundwater, screening studies to determine an effective electron donor (EO) and/or carbon source (CS) such as acetate, ethanol, formate, fumarate, lactate, and propionate were conducted. To evaluate the feasibility for the biological degradation of nitrate, soil microcosm studies using nitrate-contaminated soil and groundwater were performed. The nitrate removal percentage in the order from the highest to the lowest was: formate, fumarate, and ethanol > lactate > propionate. Essentially no nitrate consumption was observed In acetate-fed microcosms. The order of nitrate removal rate from the highest to lowest was fumarate, formate, lactate, ethanol, and propionate. These results suggest that fumarate and formate are promising EDs/CSs for in-situ bioremediation of nitrate - contaminated oxygenated groundwater.

쌀, 콩나물, 물고기의 수세(水洗) 및 조리(調理)중 수은(水銀) 함량의 변화 (Changes in the Mercury Content of Some Foods during the Washing and Cooking Processes)

  • 식품에 수은이 오염(汚染)되었을 경우 수세(水沈) 및 조리(調理)중 수은함량에 어떠한 변화가 일어나는가를 알아보기 위해 수은 오염이 우려되는 쌀, 콩나물, 물고기가 사용되었으며 수은의 검출은 무염화(無炎火) 원자흡광법에 의해 측정되었다. 수은을 인위적으로 1ppm수준으로 오염시킨 쌀을 3회 수세시 전체 수은량의 24%가, 4회 수세시 31%가 감소되었으나 취반(炊飯)에 의해서는 유의적인 함량변화를 보이지 않았다. 수은 80ppm으로 오염된 콩나물을 3회 수세한 경우 수은잔류량의 약 26%가 감소하였으나 가열조리에 의해서는 전체 수은량의 감소가 없었다. 콩나물의 가열조리시 수은은 고형물에서 국물로 용출(溶出)되었으며 용출량은 가열시간, 소금농도와 첨가하는 물의 양에 따라 23-41%의 범위에서 다르게 나타났다. 수은 1ppm으로 오염된 물고기의 가열조리시 전체 수은량의 감소는 없었으나 이때 수은은 고형물에서 국물로 용출되었으며 용출량은 조리용수(調理用水)의 소금농도에 의해 2-10%의 범위에서 달리 나타났다. 물고기를 조리후 비가식부(非可食部)를 버리는 경우 오염(汚染)된 수은의 32%가 제거되었다.

A Source-Related Approach for Discussion on Using Radionuclide-Contaminated Materials in Post-accident Rehabilitation

  • Background: In the process of discussion on the possibility of using radionuclide-contaminated soil and debris generated by radiation disasters, a strategy for the proper management of radiation exposure protection while considering the source of the contaminated materials is necessary. Materials and Methods: The radiological protection criteria that are likely to be applied to the source-related approach based on the International Commission on Radiological Protection recommendations and the International Atomic Energy Agency safety standards are summarized. We proposed five interpretations of radiation protection to contribute to the promotion of discussion on the possibility of using a part of low-level-radionuclide-contaminated soil and debris in the post-accident rehabilitation. Interpretations I to III are based on the idea of "using a reference level to protect the public in post-accident rehabilitation," whereas IV and V are based on the idea of "using the dose constraint to protect the public in the post-accident rehabilitation when the sources are handled in a planned activity." The former idea is subdivided into three based on the definition of the source, which is managed by the reference level, and the latter idea is divided into two depending on whether or not additional dose from using contaminated materials is deemed acceptable. Results and Discussion: To confirm the applicability of the five interpretations presented, we suggested the concrete values of protection criteria via two feasible cases. In this case study, we proposed radiation protection by the dose constraint based on the Interpretation IV and chose 1 mSv/yr for the public and 20 mSv/yr for workers dealing with radionuclide-contaminated materials. Conclusion: We concretely and systematically demonstrated how the concept of radiation protection can be applied to the process of discussion on the possibility of using radionuclide-contaminated materials within the framework of an international system of protection. This study's findings can provide necessary information to discuss the possibility of using radionuclide-contaminated materials as an alternative option for recovery and reconstruction after a radiation disaster from the viewpoint of radiation protection.

습식 제염장치의 성능시험 (Performance Test of Wet Type Decontamination Device)

  • 방사성 물질 취급시설인 핫셀을 출입하거나 핫셀 내의 장비 반출 등으로 인하여 핫셀 뒤편에 위치한 서비스 구역은 오염이 발생할 수 있다. 오염이 발생된 서비스 구역을 법령이 정한 표면허용오염도 이하로 제염 관리하기 위해서는 많은 방사성폐기물이 발생할 뿐만 아니라 제염하기 위한 소요인력 및 시간 또한 많이 요구된다. 이러한 문제점을 해소하기 위한 습식 제염장치는 부착된 오염원을 바닥 면으로부터 분리시키는 브러시를 회전시키는 부분, 회전브러시에 제염액 또는 세제를 공급하는 부분, 바닥 면에서 분리된 오염원과 제염액 또는 세제를 흡입하는 부분 그리고 주행하는 부분으로 구성되며, 스테인리스 재질로 제작하여 내부식성 뿐만 아니라 장치 자체의 제염도 쉽게 제작하여 조사후시험시설의 서비스 구역에서 제염장치의 성능시험을 수행하였다.
