Fingerprints may be contaminated with ethanol solutions. In order to solve the case, the law enforcement agency may need to visualize the fingerprint from these samples, but the development method has not been studied. The paper with latent fingerprint was contaminated with ethanol solution and then the blurring of ridge detail was observed. As a result, when the copy paper was contaminated with ethanol solutions of less than 75 % (v/v), the amino acid components of latent fingerprint residue blurred but lipid components of latent fingerprint residue didn't blurred. On the other hand, when the paper was contaminated with ethanol solution of more than 80 % (v/v), the amino acid components of latent fingerprint didn't blurred but the lipid components of latent fingerprint blurred. Therefore, it is found that the paper contaminated with ethanol solutions of less than 75 % (v/v) should be treated by oil red O (ORO) enhancing lipid components, and the paper contaminated with ethanol solutions of 80 % (v/v) or more should be treated by 1,2-indandione/zinc (1,2-IND/Zn) enhancing amino acid components. The blurring of ridge detail was not observed when the fingerprints were deposited with fingers contaminated with ethanol solution. This fingerprints were treated with 1,2-IND/Zn or ORO to compare the latent fingerprint development ability, and using 1,2-IND/Zn was able to visualize the latent fingerprint more clearly than using ORO.
In general, three types of fingerprints could be found at the crime scene: visible, plastic, and latent fingerprints. Examples of visible fingerprint include those made by blood, paint or ink. Plastic fingerprint are made from an impression of the finger on soft material as soap, wax, etc. Latent fingerprint are those of the invisible one to the human eye. Oil-contaminated fingerprints remained in the evidence, that are contaminated with the soybean oil, engine oil, lubricating oil or grease. Oil-contaminated fingerprints are special types of fingerprint evidence but the research for developing method regarding oil-contaminated fingerprints is a few. In this study, ultraviolet light source was employed for untreated oil-contaminated prints and the freeze-dry method with liquid nitrogen for freeze oil residue on the surfaces with sequence of developing oil-contaminated fingerprints with black and magnetic powders, cyanoacrylate (CA) fuming, Basic Yellow 40. The types of oil chosen for the experiment were soybean oil, LSA oil, engine oil and material surfaces selected for the experiment were glass, plastic aluminum plates. The aims of this study were to determine the appropriate developing methods for oil-contaminated fingerprints.
There is a growing interest to develop a new cleaning technology to overcome the disadvantages of wet cleaning technologies such as environmental pollution and the cleaning difficulty of contaminants on integrated circuits. Laser cleaning is a potential technology to remove various pollutants on a wafer surface. However, there is no fundamental data about cleaning efficiencies and cleaning mechanisms of contaminants on a wafer surface using a laser cleaning technology. Therefore, the cleaning characteristics of a wafer surface using an excimer laser were investigated in this study. Fingerprint consisting of inorganic and organic materials was chosen as a representative of pollutants and the effectiveness of a laser irradiation on a wafer cleaning has been investigated qualitatively and quantitatively. The results have shown that cleaning degree is proportional to the laser irradiation time and repetition rate, and quantitative analysis conducted by an image processing method also have shown the same trend. Furthermore, the cleaning efficiency of a wafer contaminated by fingerprint strongly depended on a photothermal cleaning mechanism and the species were removed in order of hydrophilic and hydrophobic contaminants by laser irradiation.
Focusing on the rapid market penetration of smart phones, the importance of LBS (Location Based Service) is drastically increased. However, traditional GPS method has critical weakness caused by limited availability, such as indoor environment. WPS is newly attractive method as a widely applicable positioning method. In WPS, RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indication) data of all Wi-Fi APs (Access Point) are measured and stored into a huge database. The stored RSSI data in database make single radio fingerprint map. By the radio fingerprint map, we can estimate the actual position of target point. The essential factor of radio fingerprint database is data integrity of RSSI. Because of millions of APs in urban area, RSSI measurement data are seriously contaminated. Therefore, we present the unified filtering method for RSSI measurement data. As the results of filtering, we can show the effectiveness of suggested method in practical positioning system of mobile operator.
The advanced bioremediation of diesel-contaminated soil through the exploration of bacterial interaction with plants was studied. A diesel-degrading rhizobacterium, Rhodococcus sp.412, and a plant species, Zea mays, having tolerant against diesel was selected. Zea mays was seeded in uncontaminated soil or diesel-contaminated soil with or without Rhodococcus sp. 412. After cultivating for 30 days, the growth of Zea mays in the contaminated soil inoculated with Rhodococcus sp. 412 was better than that in the contaminated soil without the bacterium. The residual diesel concentrations were lowered by seeding Zea mays or inoculating Rhodococctis sp. 412. These results Indicate that the simultaneous use of Zea mays and Rhodococcus sp. 412 can give beneficial effect to the remediation of oil-contaminated soil. Bacterial community was characterized using a 16S rDNA PCR and denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) fingerprinting method. The similarities of DGGE fingerprints were $20.8{\sim}39.9%$ between the uncontaminated soil and diesel contaminated soil. The similarities of DGGE fingerprints were $21.9%{\sim}53.6%$ between the uncontaminated soil samples, and $31.6%{\sim}50.0%$ between the diesel-contaminated soil samples. This results indicated that the structure of bacterial community was significantly influence by diesel contamination.
Reconstruction and separation of explosive-contaminated overlapping fingerprints constitutes an analytical challenge of high significance in forensic sciences. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) allows real-time chemical mapping by detecting the light emissions from laser-induced plasma and can offer powerful means of fingerprint classification based on the chemical components of the sample. During recent years LIBS has been studied one of the spectroscopic techniques with larger capability for forensic sciences. However, despite of the great sensitivity, LIBS suffers from a limited detection due to difficulties in reconstruction of overlapping fingerprints. Here, the authors propose a simple, yet effective, method of using chemical mapping to separate and reconstruct the explosive-contaminated, overlapping fingerprints. A Q-switched Nd:YAG laser system (1064 nm), which allows the laser beam diameter and the area of the ablated crater to be controlled, was used to analyze the chemical compositions of eight samples of explosive-contaminated fingerprints (featuring two sample explosive and four individuals) via the LIBS. Then, the chemical validations were further performed by applying the Raman spectroscopy. The results were subjected to principal component and partial least-squares multivariate analyses, and showed the classification of contaminated fingerprints at higher than 91% accuracy. Robustness and sensitivity tests indicate that the novel method used here is effective for separating and reconstructing the overlapping fingerprints with explosive trace.

The effect of washing fingerprints deposited on glass that were contaminated with a flammable liquid (gasoline, kerosene, diesel, and thinner) was studied by washing with hexane or heptane. The fingerprints were visualized using fuming cyanoacrylate, followed by basic yellow 40 staining. After comparing the washing effect, by dividing one fingerprint into four sections, it was confirmed that the ridge detail was damaged by dissolving the fingerprints in flammable liquid. As a result of washing fingerprints contaminated with flammable liquids using hexane or heptane, fingerprints contaminated with gasoline, kerosene, and thinner did not show a washing effect because the ridge detail was damaged at the time of contamination, and only fingerprints contaminated with diesel exhibited improved ridge detail quality. Because hexane and heptane washing damage the ridge detail, it was found that fingerprints contaminated with gasoline, kerosene, and thinner were better enhanced directly without the washing process. In addition, it was found that the amount of the washing solvent and contact time should be minimized when washing fingerprints contaminated with diesel.

This research has been performed to clarify the relationship between hydrogeochemistry and bacterial community structure in groundwater contaminated with landfill leachate. We collected and analyzed samples from 5 sites such as leachate (KSG1-12), treated leachate (KSG1-16), two contaminated groundwaters (KSG1-07 and KSG1-08) and non-contaminated groundwater (KSG1-13). pH was 8.83, 8.04, 6.87, 6.87 and 6.53 in order; redox potential (Eh) 108, 202, 47, 200 and 154 mV; electric conductivity (EC) 3710, 894, 1223, 559 and 169.9 $\mu$S/cm; suspended solids (SS) 86.45, 13.74, 4.18, 0.24 and 11.91 mg/L. In KSG01-12, the ion concentrations were higher especially in $Cl^-$ and $HCO_3^-$ than other sites. The concentrations of Fe, Mn and $SO_4^{2-}$ were higher In KSG1-07 than in KSG1-08, and vise versa in $NO_3^{2-}$. In the comparison of DGGE fingerprint patterns, the similarity was highest between KSG1-13 and KSG1-16 (57.2%), probably due to common properties like low or none contaminant concentrations. Otherwise KSG1-08 showed lowest similarities with KSG1-13 (25.8%) and KSG1-12 (27.6%), maybe because of the degree of contamination. The most dominant bacterial species in each site were involved in $\alpha$-Proteobacteria (55.6%) in KSG1-12, $\gamma$-Proteobacteria (50.0%) in KSG1-16, $\beta$-Proteobacteria (66.7%) in KSG1-07, $\gamma$-Proteobacteria (54.5%) in KSG1-08 and $\beta$-Proteobacteria (36.4%) in KSG1-13. These results indicate that the microbial community structure might be changed according to the flow of leachate in grounderwater, implying changes in concentrations of pollutants, available electron accepters and/or other environmental conditions.
Effects of Pb and $CO_2$ on soil microbial community associated with Pinus densiflora were investigated using community level physiological profiles (CLPP) and 16S rDNA PCR-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) methods. Two-years pine trees were planted in Pb-contaminated soils and uncontaminated soils, and cultivated for 3 months in the growth chamber where $CO_2$ concentration was controlled at 380 or 760 ppmv. The structure of microbial community was analyzed in 6 kinds of soil samples (CA-0M : $CO_2$ 380 ppmv + Pb 0 mg/kg + initial, CB-0M : $CO_2$ 380 ppmv + Pb 500 mg/kg + initial, CA-3M : $CO_2$ 380 ppmv + Pb 0 mg/kg + after 3 months, CB-3M : $CO_2$ 380 ppmv + Pb 500 mglkg + after 3 months, EA-3M : $CO_2$ 760 ppmv + Pb 0 mg/kg + after 3 months, EB-3M : $CO_2$ 760 ppmv + Pb 500 mg/kg + after 3 months). After 3 months, the substrate utilization in the uncontaminated soil samples (CA-3M vs EA-3M) was not significantly influenced by $CO_2$ concentrations. However, the substrate utilization in the Pb-contaminated soil samples (CB-3M vs EB-3M) was enhanced by the elevated $CO_2$ concentrations. The results of principal component analysis based on substrate utilization activities showed that the structure of microbial community structure in each soil sample was grouped by Pb-contamination. The similarities of DGGE fingerprints were 56.3 % between the uncontaminated soil samples (CA-3M vs EA-3M), and 71.4% between the Pb-contaminated soil samples (CB-3M vs. EB-3M). The similarities between the soil samples under $CO_2$ 380 ppmv (CA-3M vs CB-3M) and $CO_2$, 760 ppmv (EA-3M vs EB-3M) were 53.3% and 35.8%, respectively. These results suggested that the structure of microbial community associated with Pinus densiflora were sensitively specialized by Pb-contamination rather than $CO_2$ concentration.
