This study aimed to remove organic matter and heavy metals that could affect the recycling of soils contaminated by heavy metals, by means of electrolysis, carried out simultaneously with the leaching of the soil. To ensure better experimental equipment, a soil electrolysis apparatus, equipped with spiral paddles, was used to agitate the heavy-metal-contaminated soil effectively. The heavy-metal-contaminated soil was electrolyzed by varying the voltage to 5 V(Condition 1), 15 V(Condition 2), and 20 V(Condition 3), under the optimal operating conditions of the electrolysis apparatus, as determined through previous studies. The results showed that the pH of the electrolyte solution and the heavy-metal-contaminated soil, after electrolysis, tended to decrease with an increase in voltage. The highest removal efficiencies of TOC and $COD_{Cr}$ were 18.8% and 29.1%, 38.8% and 4.2%, and 33.3% and 50.0%, under conditions 1, 2 and 3, respectively. Heavy metals such as Cd and As were not detected in this experiment. The removal efficiencies of Cu, Pb and Cr were 4.7%, 8.3% and 2.1%, respectively, under Condition 1, while they were 42.9%, 15.2% and 22.1%, respectively, under Condition 2, and 4.7%, 23.0%, and 24.9%, respectively, under Condition 3. These results suggest that varying the voltage with the soil electrolysis apparatus for removing contaminants for the recycling of heavy-metal-contaminated soil allows the selective removal of contaminants. Therefore, the results of this study can be valuable as basic data for future studies on soil remediation.
Fundamental data was obtained to apply to the real contaminated soil of railroad by analyzing pollutant-elimination efficiency and process variables through electro-kinetic technology as well as by investigating Pollution sources of railroad soil contaminated by oil and pollution propensities.
A recurrent artificial neural network (ANN) model is developed to simulate hydrocarbon recovery process at petroleum-contaminated site. The groundwater extraction rate, vacuum pressure, and saturation hydraulic conductivity are selected as the input variables, while the cumulative hydrocarbon recovery volume is considered as the output variable. The experimental data fer establishing the ANN model are from implementation of a multiphase flow model for dual phase remediation process under different input variable conditions. The complex nonlinear and dynamic relationship between input and output data sets are then identified through the developed ANN model. Reasonable agreements between modeling results and experimental data are observed, which reveals high effectiveness and efficiency of the neural network approach in modeling complex hydrocarbon recovery behavior.

Acoustic intensity is usually estimated by the cross-spectrum of acoustic pressure at two adjacent micrphones. The cross-spectrum calculated by digital Fourier transform technique will unavoidally have leakage error since the period of signal will not be usually coincident with record length. Therefore, the acoustic intensity estimated by the conventional r]n analyzer will show distorted value. In this paper the expression of the Fourier transformed data of a harmonic signal is formulated when there is leakage error. The method to elimate the effect of leakage error from the contaminated data is also proposed. Some numerical examples show the validation of the proposed method.
The objective of the study, to develop adsorbent based purifier for removal of radiological and nuclear contaminants from contaminated water. In this regard, 3-aminopropyl silica functionalized with ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (APS-EDTA) adsorbent prepared and characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD). Prepared APS-EDTA used for adsorptive studies of Cs(I), Co(II), Sr(II), Ni(II) and Cd(II) from contaminated water. The effect on adsorption of various parameters viz. contact time, initial concentration of metal ions and pH were also analyzed. The batch method has been employed using metal ions in solution from 1000-10000 ㎍/L, contact time 5-60 min., pH 4-10 and material quantities 50-200 mg at room temperature. The obtained adsorption data were used for drawing Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms model and both models were found suitable for explaining the metal ions adsorption on APS-EDTA. The adsorption data were followed pseudo second order reaction kinetics. The maximum adsorption capacity obtained 1.3037-1.4974 mg/g for above said metal ions. The results show that APS-EDTA have great potential to remove Cd(II), Co(II), Cs(I), Ni(II) and Sr(II) from aqueous solutions through chemisorption and physio-sorption.

Hazardous substances produced from industrial sectors have caused serious contamination of soils and groundwater. The hydrophobic organic compounds in the subsurface are hard to be decomposed, and as they soil on the soil or last as a NAPL they might contaminate the groundwater for a long time. Although we recognize the danger of contaminated subsurface, very little was known about the effective remediation technique. This paper focuses on the remediation of the p-Cresol which contaminated subsurface by applying the surfactant-enhanced description technique. Sorption characteristics of soils and organic compounds are studied, and the applications of surfactant solution are studied for effective rededication. The results from this study could be used as some data for surfactant-enhanced rededication. The flexible-wall permeameter tests are performed in which in-situ remediation is simulated. Results show that triton X-100 at 2% solution disrobes p-Cresol 1.7 times as much as water description in the flexible-wall permeameter tests.
Groundwater development and use have been increasing in Korea causing frequent occurrences of related hazards such as groundwater level decline, land subsidence, and groundwater contamination. To tackle these groundwater problems, central and local governments have set-up and maintained many groundwater monitoring programs such as the National Groundwater Monitoring Network and the Groundwater Quality Monitoring Network, which collect very valuable data on the overall status of domestic groundwater to aid proper groundwater management. However, several problems mainly related to the remediation of contaminated groundwater remain unresolved. Recently, there have been some incidents related to the contamination of groundwater, and these have drawn the concern of the Korean people. Although groundwater contamination has been investigated in detail, actual groundwater remediation work has not yet been implemented. The remediation of the contaminated groundwater must begin immediately in order to sustain the eco-system service of clean groundwater and enhance the welfare of the Korean people.
Oil contamination soil has been one of the most environmental social issues for decades in the inside and outside of country. The law of soil environmental preservation was carried out in the 1990s and the government controlled not only soil environment management and the remediation of contaminated soil but also promoted the development of remedial technology and cleanup business of contaminated soil by national policy. In addition to agriculture areas, the main oil contaminated sites are a gas station, oil reservoir, petro-chemical complex, site of railway carriage base and military camp. The contamination-frequency of agriculture area and effect sites are low but it has significantly important area on account of producing food for human beings. Therefore, we should be concerned about oil contamination damage of agriculture area. The oil contamination damage of agriculture area influenced drop of birth and breeding since the oil directly adheres to seeds and farm products even diffusion of contaminated soil to cultivation area. The studies of the crops and the food vegetation has not enough detailed data caused by the incident of oil contamination. This study investigated the effect of oil in germination and growth of selected plant seeds. In this study, we try to verify whether the oil contamination by accidents on farmland influenced the damage of farm produce and the mutual relation both oil contaminated soil or the vegetation of crops. The impact of oil on plant development was followed by phytotoxicity assessments. The plants exhibited visual symptoms of stress, growth reduction and perturbations in developmental parameters. The increase of the degree of pollution induced more marked effects in plants, likely because of the physical effects of oil. The relationships between the phytotoxicity contents of plants and growth reduction suggest a chemical toxicity of fuel oil. In addition, while cleaned up the contaminated soil under the standard of contaminated soil we examined it was suitable for region standard and it may have practical possibility for fill material of construction of afforestation and molding soil of landfill.
To properly manage and remediate groundwater contaminated with chlorinated hydrocarbons such as trichloroethylene (TCE), it is necessary to assess natural attenuation processes of contaminants in the aquifer along with investigation of contamination history and aquifer characterization. This study evaluated natural attenuation processes of TCE at an industrial site in Korea by delineating hydrogeochemical characteristics along the flow path of contaminated groundwater, by calculating reaction rate constants for TCE and its degradation products, and by using geochemical and reactive transport modeling. The monitoring data showed that TCE tended to be transformed to cis-1,2-dichloroethene (cis-1,2-DCE) and further to vinyl chloride (VC) via microbial reductive dechlorination, although the degree was not too significant. According to our modeling results, the temporal and spatial distribution of the TCE plume suggested the dominant role of biodegradation in attenuation processes. This study can provide a useful method for assessing natural attenuation processes in the aquifer contaminated with chlorinated hydrocarbons and can be applied to other sites with similar hydrological, microbiological, and geochemical settings.

This paper introduces the 'Smart Scoping for Environmental Investigations Technical Guide' issued by the US Environmental Protection Agency in 2018, which describes the use of smart scoping during lifecycle of remedial investigation projects. This paper also briefly summarizes the guidelines of soil and groundwater contamination investigation of South Korea. The smart scoping practices can support the development of a robust and realistic conceptual site model that is very useful for investigations and evaluations of the contaminated site. The application of evaluation tools relevant for the site-specific characteristics is important for the development of a conceptual site model. The smart scoping recommends the use of previous investigation data and implementation of best proven strategies for successful remedial investigation project. The use of smart scoping in contaminated site investigation will provide better management of contaminated sites.
