  • In precision agriculture (PA), the differences of the agriculture related parameters such as temperature, humidity, soil moisture among different fields are considered and analyzed to precisely utilize water, pesticides, fertilizer, seeds, etc. in fields. Hence, it becomes possible to increase the profit, reduce waste and maintain quality products. This paper suggests a framework for RFID sensor network in view of PA, especially, associated with Container-grown seedlings(CGS), and presents the analysis and simulation by using Ultra High Frequency (UHF) RFID tag system. The simulation is divided into the transmitter and receiver part using Matlab/Simulink. The architecture of the model is flexible to achieve different modulation and encoding types. Finally, some results of the simulation are presents.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of container types on seedling growth of Chamaecyparis obtusa (2-year-old) in the container nursery culture. We used three container types [20 cavities (400 mL/cavity, $150seedlings/m^2$), 24 cavities (320 mL/cavity, $200seedlings/m^2$), and 35 cavities (240 mL/cavity, $260seedlings/m^2$)] and measured root collar diameter (RCD), height, biomass, root density and seedling quality index (SQI). The RCD, height, biomass, root density and SQI were the highest at 20 cavities/tray because this container has the largest volume and lowest seedling density. However, H/D and T/R ratio at all container types were not significantly different. The total biomass per unit area ($m^2$) were the lowest at 35 cavities/tray and those at both 20 and 24 cavities/tray were not significantly different. Container volume was positively correlated with RCD, height, biomass, root density and SQI except for H/D and T/R ratio, while seedling density negatively affected on them. Based on these results, 20 cavities/tray are optimal for container seedling production of C. obtusa. Usage of optimal container will make us get better quality seedlings and reduction of production costs in the container nursery as well as good field performances with higher survival rate in plantation.

  • This study was carried out to establish the informations on the optimum container for production of Larix leptolepsis container seedlings. Height growth of 1-year-old container seedling was highest in 250 mL of container (19.3 cm), and of 2-year-old seedling was in 500 mL (56.9 cm). On the other hand, the highest growth of root-collar diameter was observed in the both 1-year-old and 2-year-old seedlings grown in 500 mL. Dry mass production in both a whole seedling and each organs of 2-year-old seedling was significantly high in the container with larger volume and lower seedling density. According to the analysis using by WinRhizo program, the larger container in volume showed better root morphological traits such as total root length, root projected area, root surface area, root volume and average root diameter. Among the elements for analysis of root morphological traits, the root volume was the highest one affected by container volume. And it was observed that the root volume was 79.5% and 46.8% in 320 mL and 250 mL, respectively, compared to 500 mL.

  • This study was conducted to determine the optimum intervals of shelves and seed-tray layout in container for raising rice seedlings at automatic facility. The seedling characteristics were evaluated with 10-day to 20-day old seedling grown under the different intervals of nursery shelves and seed-tray arrangement in the containers. The plant height was increased as the shelf intervals in nursery containers from 17 cm to 23 cm. The difference in plant height was larger in seedlings seeded at May 10 than those at June 10 and in 20-day old seedlings as compared with 10-day old seedlings. The growth characteristics of seedlings was significantly varied with the layout intervals of nursery tray on the containers. The seedling height was shorter as the extension of layout intervals of the tray on the shelf of nursery containers, but the seedling quality was increased in the seedling which grown on the trays arranged at 3 to 5 cm intervals. The light intensity was remarkably different from the position of nursery tray in the container. The illumination intensity was the highest on the uppermost tray. However the seedling height was shorter as the raising of tray position from the lowest shelf to the highest it in nursery container. The best results based on the seedling characteristics was obtained from the seedlings which grown in the tray arranged at 3 cm interval on the ten-shelf container with 20 cm intervals.

  • This study was aimed to establish the most effective approach for the cultivation of Veronica rotunda var. subintegra (Nakai) T.Yamaz. plants, which was expected as new ornamental plants. We conducted an experiment using plug seedlings, varied the seeding container type and seeding rate. We also varied seedling quality, planting container, soil type, and shading ratio. Seedling quality was used seedlings produced from different seeding containers and seeding rates. The seedling quality were seeding growth using 162, 200, and 288 trays, and seedings rate was used seedlings produced by sowing 1, 2, 4 and 6 seeds. As a result, 162 trays of seedlings were suitable for use in this study. Plants grown with one seed per cell in individual cells exhibited increased individual growth, but those grown with four seeds per cell exhibited better growth for the whole plant. According to seedling quality, seedlings produced in the 162 trays or with four seeds per cell showed higher growth than other seedlings. In the cultivation of V. rotunda var. subintegra (Nakai) T.Yamaz., seedling growth increased depending on container capacity for both shoot and root parts. Container material had no significant impact on seedling growth. Seedlings grew the best on horticultural substrate, and showed better growth on mixed soils with high decomposed granite content than on peatmoss.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of container types on physiological characteristics of Zelkova serrata, Fraxinus rhynchophylla and Quercus serrata in the container nursery stage. We used 16 container types [4 growing densities (100, 144, 196 and $256\;seedlings/m^2$)${\times}4$ cavity volumes (460, 380, 300 and $220cm^3/cavity$)] and performed two-way ANOVA to test the differences in photosynthesis, photochemical efficiency and chlorophyll content among container types. Also, multiple regression analysis was conducted to correlate container dimensions with photosynthetic rate. Container types had a strong influence on photosynthesis of three species seedlings. Growing densities and cavity volumes had a significant interaction effect on photosynthetic rate, water use efficiency, stomatal conductance and chlorophyll contents except stomatal conductance of Q. serrata. In all three species, however, interactions between the two factors of container type were not found with regard to photochemical efficiency. Growing density was negatively correlated with photosynthetic rate of F rhynchophylla and Q. serrata, while cavity volumes positively affected on those of three species seedlings. The range of optimal container types was determined by multiple regression analysis based on photosynthetic rate. Consequently, optimal growing density and cavity volume of container by each tree species were found to be approximately $160{\sim}210\;seedlings/m^2$ and $430{\sim}460cm^3/cavity$ for Z. serrata, $130{\sim}150\;seedlings/m^2$ and $390{\sim}440cm^3/cavity$ for F. rhynchophylla and $130{\sim}170\;seedlings/m2$ and $420{\sim}460cm^3/cavity$ for Q. serrata, respectively. Application of adequate container will induce higher quality seedling production in nursery stage, which will also increase seedling growth in plantation stage.

  • This study was conducted to optimize the amount of drip irrigation for Prunus×yedoensis Matsum., one of the major medium-sized landscaping trees used mainly for streetscapes and as ornamentals. The experiment was conducted in a container nursery, where we assessed the growth and physiological characteristics of 4- and 8-year-old seedlings watered at different rates (x) by a drip irrigation system. The relative growth rates (based on height and root collar diameter (RCD) measurements) were highest at 288 and 416 L/year/tree for the 4- and 8-year-old containerized seedlings, respectively. These age and treatment combinations also produced significantly different dry weight and seedling quality index values, indicating good growth. The two age groups had significantly different total root lengths, root diameters, and root volumes under these respective irrigation treatments. In addition, the 4-year-old containerized seedlings irrigated at 288 L/year/tree and the 8-year-old containerized seedlings irrigated at 416 L/year/tree had the highest activations in their chlorophyll contents. Overall, the results (differences in irrigation amounts affect the seedlings morphological relative growth, biomass growth, seedling quality, and physiological reaction) indicate that the optimal irrigation amounts for container-grown Prunus×yedoensis are 288 L/year/tree for 4-year-old (RCD class, 3cm) and 416 L/year/tree for 8-year-old (RCD class, 7 cm) containerized seedlings.

  • This study was conducted to investigate effects of fertilization treatments (non-fertilizing, deep-fertilizing 20g, 50g, 100g, and surface-fertilizing 20g) on survival rate, growth performances, and seedling quality index (SQI) of container seedling and bare root seedling of Pinus densiflora in the field. There were no significantly differences in survival rate among fertilization treatments in the field. Besides, there was no toxic effect on seedling by over 100g fertilization in deep-fertilizing treatment. The root collar diameter and height of P. densiflora in both seedling types were the highest at 100g fertilization in deep-fertilizing treatments, and the biomass products and SQI were the same as above growth of root collar diameter and height. In most of the treatments, container seedlings showed better growth performances than bare root seedlings. In optimal fertilization, effect of fertilization was higher in container seedling than bare root seedling.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the growth response of Pinus densiflora seedling to relatively high day temperature during the container culture in summer season. The experiment was performed with three maximum day temperature regimes, 30~35$^{\circ}C$, 35~40$^{\circ}C$ and above 40$^{\circ}C$ in the PE house. The reduction in plant height was observed since 6 weeks after germination in the seedlings grown at relatively high day temperatures, especially the seedlings at above 40$^{\circ}C$. High temperature also reduced the root collar diameter during growth of the seedlings, therefore 17.3% of the reduction was observed in the seedlings grown at above 40$^{\circ}C$ compared with the seedlings at 30~35$^{\circ}C$. The dry weight of the seedlings grown for 16 weeks was apparently reduced by elevated dat temperature in the PE house, and the seedlings at relatively high day temperature resulted in increased T/R ratio.

  • Containerized Quercus acutissima seedlings were inoculated with vegetative mycelial inoculum of Pisolithus tinctorius and were grown in a green-house. The ectomycorrhizal fungus, P. tinctorius (Pt) increased growth of the container-grown oak seedlings. Of three treatments, Pt inoculation stimulated remarkably primary lateral roots, shoot growth, and root collar diameter and leaf area development, compared with either non-inoculated or natural soil treatment. In addition, Pt-inoculated seedlings produced ectomycorrhizae, by 71.1 percent. However, noninoculated and naturally grown seedlings were free of natural ectomycorrhizal. Ectomycorthizal roots developed more abundantly in the middle portion of the container than in the top or bottom portions.
