In In this study, we compared the results of a ball bearing life prediction model based on rolling element loads with the results of fatigue life prediction of ball bearings when a stress-based contact fatigue life prediction technique is applied to the ball bearing. We calculate the load acting on each rolling element by the external load of the bearing and apply the result to the Lundberg-Palmgren (LP) theory to calculate ball bearing life based on the rolling element. We also calculate stress-based ball bearing life through contact and fatigue analyses based on contact modeling of the ball and raceway while considering the fatigue test results of AISI 52100 steel. In stress-based life prediction, we use three high-cycle fatigue-determination equations that can predict the fatigue life when multi-axis proportional loads such as rolling-slide contact conditions are applied. These equations are derived from the stress invariant and critical plane methods and the mesoscopic approach. Life expectancy results are compared with those of the LP model. Results of the analysis indicated that the fatigue life was predicted to be lower in the order of the Crossland, Dang Van, and Matake models. Of the three, the Dang Van fatigue model was found to be the closest to the LP life.

The objective of this paper is to study the structural behavior of Composite Basement Wall (CBW) according to shear span-to-depth ratio through an experiment and predict the nonlinear behavior of CBW by using ADINA program widely has been being used for FE analysis. Especially, this study focuses on the part of CBW in which the Reinforced Concrete (RC) is under compression stress; At the region of CBW around each floor, RC part stresses by compressive force when lateral press by soil acts on the wall. The contact condition between RC wall and steel (H-Pile) including stud connector is main factor in the analysis since it governs overall structural behavior. In order to understand the structural behavior of CBW whose RC part is under compressive stress, an experimental work and finite element analysis were performed. Main parameter in the test is shear span-to-depth ratio. For simplicity in analysis, reinforcements were not modeled as a seperated element but idealized as smeared to concrete. All elements were modeled to have bi-linear relation of material properties. Three type of contact conditions such as All Generate Option (AGO), Same Element Group Option with Tie(SEGO-T) and Same Element Group Option with Not tie(SEGO-NT) were considered in the analysis. For each analysis, the stress flow and concentration were reviewed and analysis result was compared to test one. From the test result, CBW represented ductile behavior by contribution of steel member even if it had short shear span-to-depth ration which is close to "1". The global composite behavior of CBW whose concrete wall was under compressive stress could be predicted by using contact element in ADINA program. Especially, the modeling by using AGO and SEGO-T showed more close relation on comparing with test result.
PURPOSES : The applicability of the mechanics-based similarity concept (suggested by Feng et al.) for determining scaled variables, including length and load, via laboratory-scale tests and discrete element analysis, was evaluated. METHODS: Several studies on the similarity concept were reviewed. The exact scaling approach, a similarity concept described by Feng, was applied in order to determine an analytical solution of a free-falling ball. This solution can be considered one of the simplest conditions for discrete element analysis. RESULTS : The results revealed that 1) the exact scaling approach can be used to determine the scale of variables in laboratory tests and numerical analysis, 2) applying only a scale factor, via the exact scaling approach, is inadequate for the error-free replacement of small particles by large ones during discrete element analysis, 3) the level of continuity of flowable materials such as SCC and cement mortar seems to be an important criterion for evaluating the applicability of the similarity concept, and 4) additional conditions, such as the kinetics of particle, contact model, and geometry, must be taken into consideration to achieve the maximum radius of replacement particles during discrete element analysis. CONCLUSIONS : The concept of similarity is a convenient tool to evaluate the correspondence of scaled laboratory test or numerical analysis to physical condition. However, to achieve excellent correspondence, additional factors, such as the kinetics of particles, contact model, and geometry, must be taken into consideration.
Recently, PM-high speed steel(PM-HSS) has reportedly been a good alternative material for rolling mill because of its superior performance to conventional HSS. This paper has been aimed to investigate the possibility for application to rolling contact element for PM-HSS by X-ray diffraction technique. The X-ray elastic constant for PH-HSS has been found by X-ray diffraction during the four-point bending test. Residual stress and half-value breadth on the contact surface during rolling contact fatigue process by X-ray diffraction have also been measured. The result of this study shows that the application of X-ray diffraction technique to PM-HSS could be as possible alternative material as conventional HSS. Half-value breadth on rolling contact surface by X-ray diffraction is not changed during rolling contact fatigue process. On the other hand, the residual stress is changed. This suggests that dislocation reaction has been hardly occurred in rolling contact, depending on super-saturated carbon in PM-HSS.

A simple computational model for modeling of subsurface crack growth under cyclic contact loading is presented. In this model, it is assumed that the initial fatigue crack will initiate in the region of the maximum equivalent stress at certain depth under the contacting surface. The position and magnitude of the maximum equivalent stress are determined by using the equivalent contact model, which is based on the Hertzian contact conditions with frictional forces. The virtual crack extension method is used for simulation of the fatigue crack growth from the initial crack up to the formation of the surface pit due to contact fatigue. The relationships between the stress intensity factor and crack length are then determined for various combinations of equivalent contact radii and loadings.

This paper presents development of the nine-node co-rotational(CR) planar element applicable for elastoplastic and contact analysis. The CR formulation is one of the efficient geometrically nonlinear formulations. It is based on the assumptions of small strain and large displacement. Further, it is extended to both elastoplastic analysis and contact analysis in this paper. For accurate plastic analysis, nine-node quadrilateral element, which can provide accurate stress prediction, is chosen. Bi-linear hardening rule based on Newton- Raphson return-mapping is employed. Also, Lagrange multiplier is used in order for constraints regarding the contact analysis. The present development is validated via the time transient problems. The present results are compared with those obtained by the other existing software.

Dynamic characteristics of a catenary that supplies electrical power to high-speed railway is investigated. The catenary is a slender structure composed of repeating spans. Each span is in turn composed of the contact and messenger wires connected by the hangers in regular intervals. A finite element based dynamic model is developed, and numerical simulations are performed to determine the dynamic characteristics of the catenary The influence of the structural parameters on the response characteristics is investigated. The structural parameters considered include tension on the contact and messenger wires, stiffness of the hangers, and the hanger and span spacing. The hanger characteristics are found to be the dominant factors that influence the overall dynamic characteristics of the catenary.

The finite element method is applied to analyze the mechanism of metal cutting. This paper introduces some effects, such constitutive deformation laws of workpiece material, friction of tool-chip contact interfaces, tool rake angles and also simulate the cutting process, chip formation and geometry, tool-chip contact, reaction force of tool, cutting temperature. Under the usual [lane strain assumption, quasi-static analysis were performed with variation of tool-chip interface friction coefficients and rake angles. In this analysis, various cutting speeds and depth of cut are adopted. Some cutting parameters are affected to cutting force, plastic deformation of chip, shear plane angle, chip thickness and tool-chip contact length and reaction forces on tool. Cutting temperature and Thermal behavior. Several aspects of the metal cutting process predicted by the finite element analysis provide information about tool shape design and optimal cutting conditions.

Using hyper-elastic material has been increased gradually and its range was extended all over the industrial. In addition, the performance prediction of this material was required not only experimental methods like metal material but also numerical methods. In this study, we presented the process how to use numerical method for hyper-elastic material and then, it was applied for seat-ring of butterfly valve by using this process. The finite element analysis was executed to evaluate the mechanical characteristics of hyper-elastic material and search the optimum model considered conditions and features. According to that model the coefficient was obtained by using Contact analysis.
Superplastic forming/diffusion bonding (SPF/DB) processes were analyzed using a 3-D rigid visco-plastic finite element method. A constant-triangular element based on membrane approximation and an incremental theory of plasticity are employed for the formulation. The coulomb friction law is used for interface friction between tool and material. Pressure-time relationship for a given optimal strain rate is calculated by stress and pressure values at the previous iteration step. In order to improve the contact searching, hierarchical search algorithm has been applied and implemented into the code. Various geometries including sandwich panel and 3 sheet shape for 3-D SPF/DB model are analyzed using the developed program. The validity fer the analysis is verified by comparison between analysis and results in the literature.
