Mobile scaffold is used as a work platform in construction sites. According to industrial accident data, 10 fatalities occur annually on average due to falling from mobile scaffold in construction sites. To prevent such fatal accidents, safety standards must be improved by analyzing the causes of fatal accidents related to mobile scaffold. Accordingly, we analyzed domestic and international safety standards for mobile scaffold and analyzed the fatalities (117 persons) caused by mobile scaffold accidents in domestic construction sites during 2011-2020 and found that fall, overturn, and collapse accounted for 88% (103 persons), 10.3% (12 persons), and 1.7% (2 persons) of fatalities, respectively. The main causes of fatal accidents were found to be non-installation or insufficient installation of safety rails and outriggers and incorrect sequence of work. Based on the analysis results, we proposed strategies for improving the safety standards, such as the use of advanced guard rails and wheel-attached outriggers, to enhance the safety and field applicability of the mobile scaffold. Technology development and improvements in the safety standards for the use of mobile scaffold will aid in the prevention of fatal accidents caused by mobile scaffold.

Scaffold is the most commonly used equipment in various types of construction works. Since various types of construction works use the same scaffold equipment, it becomes more difficult to be controlled and managed, thus resulting hazard frequently. According to the information announced in July 2012 by Council of Labor Affairs Executive Yan, the site collapse or incomplete anti-falling protection has led the site to accident frequently, and this is the main reason that causes construction industry occupational disasters. The labor death occupational hazard ratio rises up to 13% in scaffold activity, and the Council of Labor Affairs Executive Yan has showed that the death ratio is higher when using the scaffold in construction site, the total number of death has reached to 139 from 2005 to 2010. In order to ensure the safety of scaffold user, this study tends to build a wireless sensor monitoring system to detect the reliability and safety of the scaffold. The wireless sensor technique applies in this study is different with the traditional monitoring technique which is limited with wired monitoring. Wireless sensor technique does not need wire, it just needs to consider the power supply for establishing the network and receiving stable information, and it can become a monitoring system. In addition, this study also integrates strain gauge technique in this scaffold monitoring system, to develop a real-time monitoring data transfer mechanism and replace the traditional wired single project monitoring equipment. This study hopes to build a scaffold collapse monitoring system to effectively monitor the safety of the scaffold as well as provide the timesaving installation, low-cost and portable features.
Due to increased demand for remodeling and repair in construction market in recent year, the usage of horse scaffold is increasing in the indoor finish works. Injuries related horse scaffold are mainly caused by poor installation or of careless handling of scaffold. Approximately 300 workers are injuried at construction site every year, it is accounting for about 1.5% of the total construction sector and has increased on a year-to-year trends. But the main contents between national standards and speccifications related to the manufacture and usage of horse scaffolds are mutually inconsistent, In particular, the rules on occupational safety and health standards are the basis for the prevention of industrial injuries, there is no explicit application being made to the horse scaffold commonly used on construction sites. The purpose of this study was to analye the manufacture and usage situations in order to reduce construction injuries that occur at the horse scaffolds. It will be utilized the results of the analysis as the basis data for unifying the major domestic standards and specifications associated with the manufacture and usage of horse scaffold.

In the construction industry, fatal accidents related to scaffolds frequently occur. To prevent such accidents, scaffolds should be carefully monitored for their safety status. However, manual observation of scaffolds is time-consuming and labor-intensive. This paper proposes a method that automatically analyzes the installation status of scaffold joints based on images acquired from a Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). Using a deep learning-based object detection algorithm (YOLOv5), scaffold joints and joint components are detected. Based on the detection result, a two-stage rule-based classifier is used to analyze the joint installation status. Experimental results show that joints can be classified as safe or unsafe with 98.2 % and 85.7 % F1-scores, respectively. These results indicate that the proposed method can effectively analyze the joint installation status in UAV-acquired scaffold images.
Temporary scaffold systems in the construction site play an important role for ensuring the safety of the workers and for constructing the stable structures. To assemble the scaffold, the pipe scaffolding system, the wedge binding scaffolding system and the particular materials have been utilized. To design the material arrangement of a scaffold, firstly the configuration was determined considering the construction geometry. Then, the strength of the scaffold was confirmed and the quantity of the material was accounted. In this paper, the design method of the temporary scaffold was proposed for intending the semi-automatic procedure. In the proposed design method, the geometric design and the safety requirement were specified by the safety standard and the design flow was followed by the designer's knowledge. The size and the quantities of the materials were calculated by referring to the relation between the scaffold and the constructing structure. In the calculating procedure, three dimensional positions of each scaffold materials were calculated and recorded simultaneously. Then, three dimensional scaffold structural was drawn semi-automatically on the CAD software by using the obtained material sizes, positions and directions. The proposed design method provides us the precise quantities of scaffold materials and enables us to reduce the design effort and the cost estimation processes. In addition, the obtained results can be applied to BIM software after converting to IFC format.
Designers and builders are omitting structural design and relying on workers' experience, due to the lack of awareness of the importance of scaffolding in domestic construction sites, and there is a high probability of collapsing accidents such as inappropriate wall joint installation and non-compliance with work procedures. Therefore, risk factors were analyzed in detail and major risk factors were derived from opinions of site managers and scaffolding experts in this study.
Formwork is a temporary structure that supports its weight and that of fresh concrete as well as construction live loads. Scaffoling is a temporary frame used to support people and material in the construction or repair of buildings and other large structures. It is usually a modular system of metal pipes, although it can be made out of other materials. Bamboo is still used in some Asian countries like China. The purpose of a working scaffold is to provide a safe place of work with safe access suitable for the work being done. In construction site, steel pipes are usually used as scaffolds. In this study, scaffolding systems which is changed according to sleeper and joist space were measured by buckling test. Buckling load of respective scaffolding system was analyzed by structural analysis program(MIDAS). Buckling load of scaffold with/without wall connection and footboard was got by test and structural analysis. According to these results,we know that scaffolding system of case 3 is suitable. Buckling load of scaffold with wall connection is higher than without wall connection. So wall connection is important in scaffoling systems. Footboard in the scaffolding systems is not effective against promotion of buckling load. Finally, the present study results will be used to design scaffolding systems safely in the construction sites.
Since the scaffold is composed of modular members, the total height of multi-story scaffolds does not often meet with the headroom of construction buildings. At this time, other supporting members need to be set up on the top of scaffolds. However, the mechanical behaviors of the combined system of scaffolds and other supporting members have seldom been discussed. This study explores the stability of the combined system of scaffolds and shores. The loading tests conducted in the laboratory show that the critical load of the combined system of two-story scaffolds and wooden shores is about half that of the three-story scaffold system with the same height. In the failure of both the "scaffold system" and the "combined system of scaffolds and shores' after loading, the deformation mainly occurs in the in-plane direction of the scaffold. The outdoor loading test shows that no failure occurs on any members when the combined system fails. Instead, the whole system buckles and then collapses. In addition, the top formwork of the combined system can achieve the effect of lateral support reinforcement with small lateral support forces in the outdoor loading test. This study proposes the preliminary design guidelines for the scaffolding structural design.
As a new kind of construction facility for high rise buildings, the integral steel platform scaffold system (ISPS) consisting of the steel skeleton and suspended scaffold faces high wind during the construction procedure. The lattice structure type and existence of core tubes both make it difficult to estimate the wind load and calculate the wind-induced responses. In this study, an aeroelastic model with a geometry scale ratio of 1:25 based on the ISPS for Shanghai Tower, with the representative square profile, is manufactured and then tested in a wind tunnel. The first mode of the prototype ISPS is a torsional one with a frequency of only 0.68 Hz, and the model survives under extreme wind speed up to 50 m/s. The static wind load and wind vibration factors are derived based on the test result and supplementary finite element analysis, offering a reference for the following ISPS design. The spacer at the bottom of the suspended scaffold is suggested to be long enough to touch the core tube in the initial status to prevent the collision. Besides, aerodynamic wind loads and cross-wind loads are suggested to be included in the structural design of the ISPS.

Unsafe actions and behaviors of workers cause most accidents at construction sites. Nowadays, occupational safety is a top priority at construction sites. However, this problem often requires money and effort from investors or construction owners. Therefore, decreasing the accidents rates of workers and saving monitoring costs for contractors is necessary at construction sites. This study proposes an unsafe behavior detection method based on a skeleton model to classify three common unsafe behaviors on the scaffold: climbing, jumping, and running. First, the OpenPose method is used to obtain the workers' key points. Second, all skeleton datasets are aggregated from the temporary size. Third, the key point dataset becomes the input of the action classification model. The method is effective, with an accuracy rate of 89.6% precision and 90.5% recall of unsafe actions correctly detected in the experiment.
