  • Engineers in the construction field have been using bonded waterproofing sheets in an attempt to resolve the imbalance in the quality, the risk of fire, safety of workers, and environmental pollution, as well as to eliminate separate use of organic adhesives on the surface of concrete. Recently, self-laminated waterproofing sheets have been developed. The purpose of this research is to find an appropriate processing speed according to the changes in physical properties, and visual observation of the waterproofing sheets laminated by the aluminum thin-film and viscosity layer that can be attached through self-adhesiveness on the surface of concrete and waterproofing sheets. Therefore, this research is conducted using a physical performance test. Based on the result of the test, when the high-frequency inductive heating apparatus was used, an improved adhesion and bonding stability effect were confirmed after the anti-hydrostatic pressure and bond strength in the temperature condition, and the surface observation in the processing speed condition.

  • The present paper tries to contribute fill the gap of application of the component method to tubular connections. For this purpose, one typical joint configuration in which just one component can be considered as active has been studied. These joints were selected as symmetrically loaded welded connections in which the beam width was the same as the column width. This focused the study on the component 'side walls of rectangular hollow sections (RHS) in tension/compression'. It should be one of the main components to be considered in welded unstiffened joints between I beams and RHS columns. Many experimental tests on double-sided I-beam-to-RHS-column joint with a width ratio 1 have been carried out by the authors and a finite element (FE) model was validated with their results. Then, some different analytical approaches for the component stiffness and strength have been assessed. Finally, the stiffness proposals have been compared with some FE simulations on I-beam-to-RHS-column joints. This work finally proposes the most adequate equations that were found for the stiffness and strength characterization of the component 'side walls of RHS in tension/compression' to be applied in a further unified global proposal for the application of the component method to RHS.

  • In general, segment lining tunnel refers to a tunnel formed by connecting precast concrete segments as a ring and connecting such rings to each other in the longitudinal direction of the tunnel. As the structural properties of the segment lining is highly dependent on the behavior of the segment joints, thus correct modelling of joint behavior is crucial to understand and design the segment tunnel lining. When the tunnel is subjected to ground loads, the segment joint behaves like a hinge that resists rotation, and when the induced moment exceeds a certain limit of the rotation then it may enter into non-linear field. In understanding the effect of the segment joint on the lining behavior, a moment-rotation relationship of the segment joint was explored based on the Japanese practice and Janssen's approach commonly used in the actual design. This study also presents a method to determine the rotational stiffness of joint refer to the bearing strength. The rotation of the segment joint was estimated in virtual design conditions based on the existing models and the proposed method. And the sectional force of the segment lining and joint were calculated along with the estimated rotation. As the rotation at the segment joint increases, the joint contact area decreases, so the designer have to verify the segment joint for bearing strength as well. This paper suggests a consistent method to determine the rotational stiffness and bearing strength of joints.

  • The use of precast concrete segments facilitates quality control and reduces construction cost and period. However, as a construction method it has limited applicability, for it demonstrates structurally disadvantageous behaviors due to stress concentration and large displacement in the joint of assembled segments. This paper proposes a precast segment joint with improved structural performance, and experimentally assesses the structural performance of the proposed joint in terms of crack and failure modes, deformation, maximum load and displacement ductility. In consideration of constructability and structural performance, this paper suggests different types of joint with shear key, post tension and steel rods as variables, and performs a static loading test on them. The test results show that the performance of SGSP specimens is around 84% that of a monolithic specimen in terms of the maximum load, while their ductility behaviors are better than the monolithic specimen. This result confirms the improved structural performance and applicability of the proposed joint.

  • The masonry stone arch bridge, due to its superior durability and aesthetics, has been one of the oldest and popular types of short span bridges. In Europe, this type of bridges have been continuously constructed, and numerous related researches have been conducted until recently. However, there are few construction cases in Korea since the economic efficiency and the construction effectiveness is not contentable. Therefore, this study proposed the reinforced joint to improve structural performance of the conventional arch systems which is proposed by previous researchers. The structural performance of the proposed reinforced joint, which consists of the transverse loop joint and the longitudinal reinforcement, is validated by experimental test of an arch bridge which is constructed using precast concrete segments. Based on this results of the experimental test, it is concluded that the strength of arch bridges can be enhanced by applying the proposed reinforced joints since the reinforced joint restrains hinge behavior and relative displacement between segments with a little reinforcement.

  • A finite element analysis study was performed to investigate the behavior and strength of a Plate-Circular Hollow Section joint stiffened with Rib-plate, Since The strength of plate-Circular Section joint is reduced by joint of stress and local plastic deformation which is caused by wall moment, rib plates are attached to the upper and lower Plate-Circular Hollow Section joint for redistribution of stress. The behaviors of joints stiffened with Rib-plate according to shape of rib and reinforcing method, etc are different from those of joints which is not stiffened. However, the criterion of hollow structural section was limited on some parts. Therefore, this study intends to investigate the behavior and structural capacity of Plate-Circular Hollow Section joints stiffened with Rib-plate and compare the Finite element analysis with the Design Equation. Finally, this study proposes the reasonable ultimate strength formula through the comparisons with other design guide.

  • In this paper, it was performed the fatigue test to examine the effect of cyclic loading for the simple T-joint. Axial force of bolt by clamping and the change of the force by applied load were measured in the joint. And the bolt force, the failure mode and the fatigue strength under cyclic loading were investigated. The parameters of the tension joint were set to be the flange thickness and the diameter of bolt to a different stiffness of the joint in response to the combination. From the fatigue test, failure mode of tensile joints under cyclic loading could be evaluated using a static ultimate load of the specific failure mode in EC3. The fatigue strength of the tension joints was considerably higher than the fatigue strength of the EC3(36) that does not consider a lever action. However, the additional axial force by lever action occurs to an increase in the axial force of the bolt it requires a careful evaluation of the fatigue strength.

  • RC (Reinforced Concrete) member has varying service life due to varying diffusion characteristics with loading conditions even if it is exposed to constant exterior conditions. In the paper, quantitative parameters are obtained through adopting the previous results for effects of compressive, tensile, and cold joint on chloride diffusion in OPC (Ordinary Portland Cement) and GGBFS (Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag) concrete. Service life is evaluated in RC simple beam with 10.0m of span through increasing loading from self weight (2.5kN/m) to the loading to cracking moment (5.5kN/m). In OPC concrete without cold joint, service life changes to 89.4% for tensile region and 101% for compressive region with loadings while GGBFS concrete has 80.0% and 106%, respectively. For cold joint area, GGBFS concrete shows much reduced service life to 82~80% in compressive region and 69~61% in tensile region, which is caused by the lower diffusion in normal condition but relatively higher increasing cold joint effect than OPC concrete.
