High throughput transcriptome investigations of immunity in plants highlight the complexity of gene networks leading to incompatible interaction. To identify genes crucial to resistance against Xanthomonas oryzae pv oryzae, functional genetic analysis of selected differentially expressed genes from our microarray data set was carried out. A total of 13 overexpression vector constructs were made using 35S CaMV promoter which drive constitutive expression in rice. Most of the genes are developmentally expressed especially during maximum tillering stage and are commonly highly expressed in the leaves. When screened against Xoo strain K2, the transgenic plants displayed shorter lesion length compared with wild type Dongjin which indicates partial resistance. The levels of ROS continuously magnified after inoculation which indicates robust cellular sensing necessary to initiate cell death. Elevated transcripts levels of several defense-related genes at the downstream of defense signal network also corroborate the phenotype reaction of the transgenic plants. Moreover, expression assays revealed regulation of these genes by cross-communicating signal-transductions pathways mediated by salicylic and jasmonic acid. These collective findings revealed the key immune signaling conduits critical to mount full defense against Xoo.

Nonlinear analysis of the reinforced concrete beam subjected to torsion is presented. Seventeen equations involving seventeen variables are derived from the equilibrium equation, compatibility equation, and the material constitutive laws to solve the torsion problem. Newton method was used to solve the nonlinear simultaneous equations and efficient algorithms are proposed. Present model covers the behavior of reinforced concrete beam under pure torsion from service load range to ultimate stage. Tensile resistance of concrete after cracking is appropriately considered. The softened concrete truss model and the average stress-strain relations of concrete and steel are used. To verify the validity of Present model, the nominal torsional moment strengths according to ACI-99 code and the ultimate torsional moment by present model are compared to experimental torsional strengths of 55 test specimens found in literature. The ultimate torsional moment strengths by the present model show good results.

The effect of porosity on the crack propagation is studied by using the cohesive zone model. Standard mode I fracture test were done by using compact tension specimens with various porosities. Load-load line displacement curves and ${\delta}_5$-crack resistance curves for various porosities were obtained from experiments. The cohesive zone model proposed by Xu and Needleman was employed to describe the crack propagation in porous media, and the Gurson model is used for constitutive relation of porous materials. These models were implemented into user subroutines of a finite element program ABAQUS. The fracture mode changes from ductile fracture to brittle fracture as the porosity increases. Numerical calculations agree well with experimental results.

Nickel base superalloys are widely used for high temperature applications due to heat resisting capability and corrosion resistance at high temperatures. Superalloys with many strengthening alloying elements are frequently used in powder form to alleviate harmful effects of alloy segregation. HIP (hot isostatic pressing) and DB (diffusion bonding) as a form of solid-state bonding process is used to make turbine components, such as integrated turbine rotors. HIP/DB process requires many technical overcomes related to dimensional changes as well as microstructural control. In this research, HIP/DB process for nickel base superalloys, Udimet 720 and MM 247, were investigated with a view to control the dimensional change during the consolidation process. Simple disc-shaped cans were used to select the conceptual die design for the control of the dimensional change especially in radial direction. The change in the shape of consolidated shape was investigated using commercial FE code with constitutive equations fur low temperature plasticity deformation.

The settlements of footings in send are often estimated based on the results of in-situ tests, particularly the standard penetration test (SPT) and the cone penetration test (CPT). In this paper, we analyze the load-settlement response of vertically loaded footings placed in sands using both the finite element method with a non-linear stress-strain model and the conventional elastic approach. Calculations are made for both normally consolidated and heavily overconsolidated sands with various relative densities. For each case, the cone penetration resistance qc is calculated using CONPOINT, a widely tested program that allows computation of qc based on cavity expansion analysis. Based on these analyses, we propose a procedure for the estimation of footing settlement in sands based on CPT results.
This paper predicted the thermal conductivity of spatially reinforced composites(SRC) by applying the volume averaging method and the thermal resistance method. The former method employs existing micro-mechanical theories and conventional transformation rules to obtain the constitutive relations for the unit cells of the composites and the latter one uses the analogy between the diffusion of heat and electrical charge. To verify the theoretical predictions, the thermal conductivity of 4-D(dimensional) SRC was examined experimentally. The comparison of the numerical results with those measured by the experiment showed good agreement.

To make a practical application of a micro-strain sensors with ultrahigh sensitivity, a strain on electrical properties of micro-patterned amorphous (Fe\ulcornerco\ulcorner)\ulcornerSi\ulcornerB\ulcorner films had influenced on the impedance over frequency range from 1 MHz to 1 GHz. Reflecting excellent magnetomachanical couping properties of films, high frequency impedance was subject to change sensitively by a strain : a change in impe-dance of 39% was observed at 200 MHz applied a strain of 224$\times$10\ulcorner. To determine a optimum shape of micro-patterned films, film impedance was analyzed by virtue of its constitutive components of resis-tance and reactance. Result was shown that reduction of the resistance term(hence increase of resultant reactance term) of impedance is more effective for enhancing the strain sensitivity of films at relatively low frequency range.

The purpose of this thesis is to derive a theoretical model of the hysteretic resistance of the visco-elastic damper based on test results of harmonic excitation and to investigate of the basis of theory and experiment the effect of vibration control and response characteristics of portal frames degree vibration systems provided with the damper. The behaviour of a visco-elastic degree under dynamic loading is idealized by a model of the theory of visco-elasticity, i.e. a four-parameter model formed as a parallel combination of Maxwell fluid and Kelvin-Voigh models and its constitutive equation is derived. The model parameters are determined for a tested damper from the datas of harmonic excitation tests. The theoretical model of the damper is incorporated in equation fo motion of single degree of freedom. A computer program for solving the equation is written using Runge-kuttas's numerical integration scheme. Using this analysis program test cases of the earthquake excitation are simulated and the results of the simulation are the results of the simulation are the results of the simulation are compared with the test results.

Concrete shear walls are one of the major structural lateral resisting systems in buildings. In some cases, due to the change in the occupancy of the structure or functional requirements like architectural and even mechanical ones, openings need to be provided and installed in structural walls after their construction. Providing these openings may significantly influence the structural behavior of the constructed wall. This paper considers the results of a nonlinear finite element analysis of shear walls with opening strengthened by carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) strips with different configurations. Details of bond-slip constitutive model of link elements to simulate the connections of FRP strips to concrete surface is presented. The proposed model in this research has been validated using experimental results available in the literature. The results indicated that the proposed configuration of CFRP strips significantly improved the lateral resistance and deformation capacity of the shear walls with opening.
