This paper presents a new hypoelasticity model which was implemented in a nonlinear finite element formulation to analyze reinforced concrete (RC) structures. The model includes a new hypoelasticity constitutive relationship utilizing the rotation of material axis through successive iterations. The model can account for high nonlinearity of the stress-strain behavior of the concrete in the pre-peak regime, the softening behavior of the concrete in the post-peak regime and the irrecoverable volume dilatation at high levels of compressive load. This research introduces the modified version of the common application orthotropic stress-strain relation developed by Darwin and Pecknold. It is endeavored not to violate the principal of "simplicity" by improvement of the "capability" The results of analyses of experimental reinforced concrete walls are presented to confirm the abilities of the proposed relationships.

Based on the coupled elastic bending deformation features and relationships between the internal force and deformation of pre-twisted Euler beam, the generalized strain, the equivalent constitutive equation and the equilibrium equation of pre-twisted Euler beam are developed. Based on the properties of the dual-antisymmetric matrix, the general solution of pre-twisted Euler beam is obtained. By comparison with ANSYS solution by using straight Beam-188 element based on infinite approach strategy, the results show that the developed method is available for pre-twisted Euler beam and also provide an accuracy displacement interpolation function for the subsequent finite element analysis. The effect of pre-twisted angle on the mechanical property has been investigated.
The objective of this paper is to study the deformation in transversely isotropic thermoelastic solid using new modified couple stress theory subjected to ramp-type thermal source and without energy dissipation. This theory contains three material length scale parameters which can determine the size effects. The couple stress constitutive relationships are introduced for transversely isotropic thermoelastic solid, in which the curvature (rotation gradient) tensor is asymmetric and the couple stress moment tensor is symmetric. Laplace and Fourier transform technique is applied to obtain the solutions of the governing equations. The displacement components, stress components, temperature change and couple stress are obtained in the transformed domain. A numerical inversion technique has been used to obtain the solutions in the physical domain. The effects of length scale parameters are depicted graphically on the resulted quantities. Numerical results show that the proposed model can capture the scale effects of microstructures.
This study presents a new computational model to analyze the grain deformation in a polycrystalline aggregate in a discrete manner and based directly in the underlying physical micro-mechanisms. When scaling down a metal forming process, the dimensions of the workpiece decrease but the microstructure of the workpiece remains the similar. Since the dimensions of the workpiece are very small, the microstructure especially the grain size will play an important role in micro forming, which is called size effects. As a result, specific characteristics have to be considered for the numerical analysis. The grains and grain boundary elements are introduced to model individual grains and grain boundary facets, respectively, to consider the size effects in the micro forming. The constitutive description of the grain elements accounts for the rigid-plastic and the grain boundary elements for visco-elastic relationships. The capability of the proposed approach is demonstrated through application of grain element and grain boundary element in the micro forming.

Solutions of geotechnical engineering problems require calculation of deformation and stresses during various stages of loading. Powerful numerical methods are available to make such calculation even for complicated problems. To get accurate results, realistic stress-strain relationships of soil are dependent on a number of factors such as soil type, density, stress level and stress path. Attempts are continuously being made to develope analytical models for soils incorporating all such factors. The nature of stress-path dependency, the principle that governs deformations in sand, and the use of Lade's single work-hardening model for predicting sand response for a variety of stress-paths have been investigated and are examined. The test results and the analyses presented show that under some conditions sand exhibits stress-path dependent behavior. The strains calculated from Lade's single work-hardening model are in reasonable agreement with those measured, but some discrepancies occur. The largest difference between measured and calculated strains occurs for proportional loading with increasing stresses and for stress-path directions.
When approached using nonlinear finite element (FE) techniques, structural analyses generate, for real RC structures, large complex numerical problems. Damage is a major part of concrete behavior, and the discretization technique is critical to limiting the size of the problem. Based on previous work, the ${\mu}$ damage model has been designed to activate the various damage effects correlated with monotonic and cyclic loading, including unilateral effects. Assumptions are formulated to simplify constitutive relationships while still allowing for a correct description of the main nonlinear effects. After presenting classical 2D finite element applications on structural elements, an enhanced simplified FE description including a damage description and based on the use of multi-fiber beam elements is provided. Improvements to this description are introduced both to prevent dependency on mesh size as damage evolves and to take into account specific phenomena (permanent strains and damping, steel-concrete debonding). Applications on RC structures subjected to cyclic loads are discussed, and results lead to justifying the various concepts and assumptions explained.

This paper presents a deformable strut-and-tie model of determining the shear strengths and ultimate deformations of the shear-dominant reinforced concrete members. The proposed model originates from the strut-and-tie model concept and satisfies equilibrium, compatibility, constitutive laws, and the geometric conditions of shear deformation. This study attempts to apply deformation patterns to strut-and-tie models. The yielding of flexural reinforcements determines yielding states and the ultimate states of reinforced concrete coupling beam are defined as the ultimate compressive strain of struts and the degradation of compressive strength due to principal tensile strain of struts. The validity and accuracy of the proposed model is then tested against available experimental data. The parameters reviewed include the ratios of truss action and arch action, the reinforcement ratios, and the shear span-depth ratio. It is expected that this model can be applied to displacement-based design methods.
A theoretical study of the behavior of structured soils is presented herein. By introducing the effect of soil structure and loading history into the Cam Clay model, a new model was formulated. The concept of differing void ratios was modified to combine structural parameters and the over consolidation ratio, and an evolution law was proposed. Upon introducing the concept of the subloading yield surface, a new two-yield surface model was obtained. The predicted results were compared to the experimental data, demonstrating that the new model provided satisfactory qualitative modeling of many important features of structured soils.

The directions of further developments in the modeling of sintering are pointed out, including multi-scale modeling of sintering, on-line sintering damage criteria, particle agglomeration, sintering with phase transformations. A true multi-scale approach is applied for the development of a new meso-macro methodology for modeling of sintering. The developed macroscopic level computational framework envelopes the mesoscopic simulators. No closed forms of constitutive relationships are assumed for the parameters of the material. The model framework is able to predict the final dimensions of the sintered specimen on a global scale and identify the granular structure in any localized area for prediction of the material properties.
This paper deals with a novel application of the Generalized Differential Quadrature (G.D.Q.) method to the linear elastic static analysis of isotropic rotational shells. The governing equations of equilibrium, in terms of stress resultants and couples, are those from Reissner-Mindlin shear deformation shell theory. These equations, written in terms of internal-resultants circular harmonic amplitudes, are first put into generalized displacements form, by use of the strain-displacements relationships and the constitutive equations. The resulting systems are solved by means of the G.D.Q. technique with favourable precision, leading to accurate stress patterns.
