  • A constitutive model was proposed to analyze creep densification and grain growth of alumina powder compacts during high temperature processing. Theoretical results from the constitutive model were compared with various experimental data of alumina powder compacts in the literature including pressureless sintering, sinter forging and hot pressing. The proposed constitutive equations were implemented into finite element analysis program (ABAQUS) to simulate densification for more complicated geometry and loading conditions. High temperature forming processing of alumina compact with complicated shape was simulated. Processing of Alumina Powder Compacts

  • Anisotropic constitutive equations for sintering of metal powder compacts have been formulated from a linear viscous transversely-isotropic model in which an anisotropic sintering stress has been introduced to describe free sintering densification kinetics. The identification of material parameters defined in the model, has been achieved from thermomechanical experiments performed on 316L stainless steel warm-compacted powder in a dilatometer allowing controlled compressive loading.

  • This paper addresses a viscoplastic constitutive model that allows a consistent way of modeling positive and negative rate sensitivities of flow stress concerned with dynamic strain aging. Based on the concept of continuum mechanics, a phenomenological constitutive model includes the use of a yield surface within the framework of unified viscoplasticity theory. To model negative rate sensitivity, rate-dependent back stress is introduced and flow stress in fully developed inelastic deformation regime is thus decomposed into the plastic contribution of rate independency and the viscous one of rate dependency.

  • This paper is concerned with modified integration algorithm on the strain-space for rate and temperature dependent elasto-plastic constitutive relations in order to obtain more accurate results in numerical implementation. The proposed algorithm is integrated analytically using integration by part and chain rule and then is applied to the 2-stage Lobatto IIIA with second-order accuracy. It has advantage that is able to consider the convective stress rates on the yield surface of the strain-space. Also this paper is carried out the iteration procedure using the Newton-Raphson method to enforce consistency at the end of the step. And the performance of the proposed algorithm for rate and temperature dependent constitutive relation is illustrated by means of analysis of adiabatic shear bands.

  • For the proper analysis of soil excavation problems through FEM, a constitutive model should be able to simulate the real soil behavior, especially around the excavated section. In this study, the nenlinear finite element analysis is performed using an anisotropic hardening constitutive model based on 'generalized isotropic hardening' rule. Furthermore, in order that the implementation of this constitutive model is performed consistently with the iterative algorithm for the numerical analysis, stresses are implicitly intergrated by the closest point projection algorithm, and a consistent tangent modulus is evaluated. An excavation example including various loading esquences is analyzed, and the results are compared with the Cam-clay model.

  • In this study, a plastic hardening constitutive equation for steels of polar class vessels at low temperature is proposed. The equation was derived using the experimental data obtained from tensile tests at room and low temperatures. Tensile tests at low temperature are both costly and time consuming because an expensive cold chamber is necessary and it takes too much time to cool down a specimen to set temperature. Using the proposed plastic hardening constitutive equation the plastic hardening characteristics of steels for polar class vessels at low temperature can be easily predicted from the tensile test results at room temperature.

  • This paper focuses on the finite element (FE) response sensitivity and reliability analyses considering smooth constitutive material models. A reinforced concrete frame is modeled for FE sensitivity analysis followed by direct differentiation method under both static and dynamic load cases. Later, the reliability analysis is performed to predict the seismic behavior of the frame. Displacement sensitivity discontinuities are observed along the pseudo-time axis using non-smooth concrete and reinforcing steel model under quasi-static loading. However, the smooth materials show continuity in response sensitivity at elastic to plastic transition points. The normalized sensitivity results are also used to measure the relative importance of the material parameters on the structural responses. In FE reliability analysis, the influence of smoothness behavior of reinforcing steel is carefully noticed. More efficient and reasonable reliability estimation can be achieved by using smooth material model compare with bilinear material constitutive model.

  • The mechanical behavior of a commercially pure titanium (CP-Ti) is investigated at high temperature Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) compression test with high strain-rate. Tests are performed over a temperature range from room temperature to 1000$^{\circ}C$ with interval of 200$^{\circ}C$ and a strain-rate range of 1900 ∼ 2000/sec. The true flow stress-true strain relations depending on temperature are achieved in these tests. For construction of constitutive equation from the true flow stress-true strain relation, parameters for the Johnson-Cook constitutive equation is determined. And the modified Johnson-Cook equation is used for investigation of behavior of flow stress in vicinity of recrystalization temperature. The Modified Johnson-Cook constitutive equation is more suitable in expressing the dynamic behavior of a CP-Ti at high temperature, i.e. about recrystalization temperature.

  • A constitutive model was implemented in ABAQUS code. The constitutive equation can model the behavior for overall range of strain level from small to large deformation, which is based on anisotropic hardening rule and total stress concept. The formulation includes (1) finite strain formulation on the basis of Jaumann rate, (2) implicit stress integration and (3) consistent tangent moduli. Therefore the mathematical background was established in order that large deformation analysis can be performed accurately and efficiently with the anisotropic constitutive model. In the large deformation analyses, geometric nonlinearity was considered and the result of analyses with the proposed model was compared with that of Mises model for the overall strain range behavior.

  • This paper presents results of a parametric study for a constitutive model (Lee et ai, 1989) for particle-reinforced composites considering weakened interfaces and crack nucleation. Eshelby's tensors for particles with imperfect interfaces (Ju and Chen, 1994) and microcracks (Sun and Ju, 2004) are incorporated into a micromechanical formulation. A parametric study for the microcrack nucleation parameter ${\phi}_{{\upsilon}0}$ and ${\epsilon}^{th}$ is conducted to investigate the sensitivity of the parameter to the constitutive model.
