The methods of robust design optimization (RDO) and reliability-based robust design optimization (RBRDO) were implemented in the present study. RBRDO is an integrated method that accounts for the design robustness of an objective function and for the reliability of constraints. The objective function in RBRDO is expressed in terms of the mean and standard deviation of an original objective function. Thus, a multi-objective formulation is employed. The regressive approximate models are generated via the moving least squares method (MLSM) and constraint-feasible moving least squares method (CF-MLSM), which make it possible to realize the feasibility regardless of the multimodality/nonlinearity of the constraint function during the approximate optimization processes. The regression model based RBRDO is newly devised and its numerical characteristics are explored using the design of an actively controlled ten bar truss structure.

Dental trauma is very common in children and relatively young people, with the line of treatment depending on the time elapsed, age of the child, and tooth maturity. If the fractured segment is available and there is close approximation of the segment to the remaining tooth, reattachment of the fractured segment is a feasible option. This treatment offers several advantages, including the reestablishment of function, aesthetics, shape, shine and surface texture, in addition to the original contour and alignment of the teeth. The following cases present two different complex crown fracture cases that were treated using tooth fragment reattachment with fiber-reinforced composite post.

The heat conduction problem with discontinuous material coefficients generally consists of the conservative equation, boundary condition, and interface condition, which should be additionally satisfied in the solution procedure. This feature often makes the development of new numerical schemes difficult as it induces a layered singularity in the solution fields; thus, a special approximation is required to capture the singular behavior. In addition to the approximation, the construction of a total system of equations is challenging. In this study, a wedge function is devised for enriching the approximation, and the interface condition itself is embedded in the moving least squares(MLS) derivative approximation to consistently satisfy the interface condition. The heat conduction problem is then discretized in a strong form using the developed derivative approximation, which is named as the interface immersed MLS difference method. This method is able to efficiently provide a numerical solution for such interface problems avoiding both numerical quadrature as well as extra difference equations related to the interface condition enforcement. Numerical experiments proved that the developed numerical method was highly accurate and computationally efficient at solving the heat conduction problem with interfacial jump as well as the problem with a geometrically induced interfacial singularity.
This paper suggests a new criterion for testing the general linear hypothesis about coefficients in multivariate growth curve model. It is developed from a Bayesian point of view using the highest posterior density region methodology. Likelihood ratio test criterion(LRTC) by Khatri(1966) results as an approximate special case. It is shown that under the simple case of vague prior distribution for the multivariate normal parameters a LRTC-like criterion results; but the degrees of freedom are lower, so the suggested test criterion yields more conservative test than is warranted by the classical LRTC, a result analogous to that of Berger and Sellke(1987). Moreover, more general(non-vague) prior distributions will generate a richer class of tests than were previously available.
The effects of three mechanisms, calcium depletion, sulphate and carbonate penetration, on the concrete degradation have been studied. The shrinking core model (SCM) and the HYDROGEOC. HEM (HGC) model have been applied to evaluate how fast the mechanisms proceed. The SCM is an analytical approximation model and the HGC is a numerical mass transport model coupled with chemical reaction. The SCM leads to more conservative results than the HGC, and turns out to be very useful in the viewpoint of simplicity and conservatism. During 300 years, calcium has been depleted within 10 cm from the concrete outer surface, and sulphate has penetrated less than 13.5 cm into the concrete. Carbonate has not penetrated own 7 cm into the concrete in contact with the bentonite, and, furthermore, its penetration into the concrete with the groundwater is negligible. Conclusively, the concrete is expected to maintain its integrity for at least 300 years that are regarded as institutional control period of intermediate and low-level radioactive waste repository.
Stepped I-beams having increased moment of inertia at one end(singly stepped beam) or both ends(doubly stepped beams) can often be seen in construction of bridges due to material economy and easy fabrication of the section. This paper presents the results of the parametric study of lateral torsional buckling of monosymmetric stepped I-beams with constant depth subjected to equal and opposite end moments applied at the end of the beam. Design recommendations were made based on the finite element results of the models having different combinations of monosymmetric ratio, stepped length ratio, flange thickness ratio and flange width ratio,. The proposed approximation is acceptable based on the parameters given having mostly conservative results. The proposed equation can be further used to extend the study to different loading conditions.
This paper studies on the processing of spatial joins. The spatial join operation is divided into filters and refinement steps in general. The processing of spatial joins can be greatly improved by the use of filters that reduce the polygons in order to find the intersecting ones. As a result, three possible sets of answers are identified: the positive one, the negative one and the inconclusive one. To identify all the interesting pairs of polygons with inconclusive answers, it is necessary to have access to the representation of polygons so that an exact geometry test can take place. We introduce a bit-map approximation technique to drastically reduce the computation required by the refinement step during refinement processing. Bit-map representation are used for the description of the internal, the external and the boundary regions of the polygon objects. The proposed scheme increases the chance of trivial acceptance and rejection of data objects, and reduces unnecessary disk accesses in query processing. It has been shown that the reference to the object data file can be cut down by as much as 60%.
Water flow into unsaturated soils is most often modeled by Richards equation consisting of the mass conservation law and Darcy's law. Three standard forms of Richards equation are presented as the head (${\Psi}$)-based form, the moisture content (${\theta}$) based form, and the mixed form. Numerical solutions of these partial differential equations with highly nonlinear terms can cause poor results along with significant mass balance errors. The numerical solution based on the mixed form of Richards equation is known that the mass is perfectly conserved without any additional computational efforts. The aim of this study is to develop fully implicit numerical scheme of Richards equation for one-dimensional vertical unsaturated flow in homogeneous soils using the finite difference approximation, and then to perform sensitivity analysis of infiltration to the variations in the unsaturated soil properties and to different soil types.

For assessing significance of a defect in a component operating at high (creeping) temperatures, accurate estimation of fracture mechanics parameter, $C^{*}$-integral, is essential. Although the J estimation equation in the GE/EPRl handbook can be used to estimate the $C^{*}$-integral when the creep -deformation behavior can be characterized by the power law creep, such power law creep behavior is a very poor approximation for typical creep behaviors of most materials. Accordingly there can be a significant error in the $C^{*}$-integral. To overcome problems associated with GE/EPRl approach, the reference stress approach has been proposed, but the results can be sometimes unduly conservative. In this paper, a new method to estimate the $C^{*}$-integral for deflective components is proposed. This method improves the accuracy of the reference stress approach significantly. The proposed calculations are then validated against elastic -creep finite element (FE) analyses for four different cracked geometries following various creep -deformation constitutive laws. Comparison of the FE $C^{*}$-integral values with those calculated from the proposed method shows good agreements.greements.
Gaussian plume model is used to assess environmental dose for abnormal radioactive release in nuclear facility, but there has a problem to use it for complex terrain. In this report, MATTEW and WIND04 Codes which had been verified were used to calculate wind field in the complex terrain. Under the base of these codes principle, wind fields were obtained from the calculation of the finite difference approximation for advection-diffusion equations which satisfy the mass-conservative law. Particle concentrations and external doses were calculated by using PIC model which approximate the particle to radioactive cloud, and atmospheric diffusion of the particles from the random walk method. The results show that the adjusted wind fields and the distributions of the exposure dose vary with the topography of the complex terrain.
