Investigation of Wood Species and Conservation Status of Wooden Seated Amitabha Buddha Triad and Wooden Amitabha Buddha Altarpiece of Yongmunsa Temple, Yecheon, Korea (Treasure)

  • The Wooden Seated Amitabha Buddha Triad and Altarpiece have not been the subjects of definitive species identification and scientific analysis. In this study, visual investigation, portable X-ray fluorescence (p-XRF), species identification, and lacquer layer observations were carried out to determine the original materials and conservation status. Cracks, exfoliation and discoloration were detected during the visual investigation. The p-XRF data indicated that chrome oxide green, malachite, gold, cadmium red, cinnabar, minium, hematite, lead white, ink stick (Carbon), and copper were used for pigments and the coronet accessory. Tilia spp., Abies spp., and Pinus spp. were identified from both the Buddha Triad and Altarpiece. Finally, lacquer layer analyses of the base layer, lacquer layer, orange pigment layer, and gold leaf layer observed modern synthetic pigments likely used in previous conservation. As the Korean Cultural Heritage Charter and the International Charter for the Conservation and Restoration of Monuments and Sites clearly state that objects of cultural heritage must be conserved using their original materials, future conservation of these objects should utilize the data obtained in this study to employ traditional materials. Furthermore, a deterioration map diagnosis can be applied together with the obtained analysis data to understand the conservation status of and inform an appropriate and authentic conservation treatment for the Buddha Triad and Altarpiece.

A Comparative Functionality Evaluation of Paulownia Wood Storage Boxes and Acid-free Archival Boxes to Store the Annals of Joseon Dynasty - Indoor and Outdoor Temperature and Relative Humidity Controls, and Heat Release Rate -

  • A paulownia wood has been widely used with various advantages as its low weight, permeability, convenient workability and aesthetic patterns for a long time. However, the related empirical researches and simultaneous evaluations of functionality are insufficient compared with acid-free archival boxes for now. In this study, the indoor and outdoor temperature and relative humidity control and heat release rate were evaluated under the controlled and uncontrolled circumstance in 2018. The paulownia wood storage box showed superior control effect of relative humidity than the acid-free archival box in constantly uncontrolled environment. Also, the possibility of the flame diffusion from the surface of the materials was higher for the paulownia materials, and the acid-free archival box showed more dangerous patterns in the early stages of the fire.

대규모 치수(治水) 사업이 주변 문화재 환경에 미치는 영향 (Impact of a Large Water Control on Environment of Surrounding Cultural Heritage)

  • 수변에 위치한 신륵사를 대상으로 대규모 치수 사업이 주변 환경(온 습도, 강수량, 풍속, 시정현천)에 미치는 영향을 모니터링 하였고, 문화재의 손상을 유발할 수 있는 환경 인자로 안개일수를 도출하였다. 보 건설 이후 여주 이천지역의 월별 상대습도가 최대 9.6% 감소하였는데 이는 해당 연도의 강우일수 및 강수량의 감소에 의한 것이다. 남한강에 인접한 신륵사는 100 m 이내의 수변과의 거리, 평균 풍속 0.5 m/s의 안개발생 요인들로 안개가 발생하고 유지되기 좋은 입지 환경을 갖고 있다. 신륵사의 안개 발생일수를 보 설치기간에 따라 비교한 결과, 설치 직후 발생일이 53일 감소하였다. 안개 발생시 공간에 따른 상대습도는 외부, 조사당 외부, 조사당 내부 순으로 높았고, 조사당 외부와 내부의 차이는 평균 5.4%로 확인되었다. 계절별, 공간별 모두 안개가 발생하는 날의 상대습도가 맑은 날 대비 평균 6.3% 높았다. 남한강의 강폭 면적이 보 건설 전 대비 건설 후 1.45배 증가하여 향후 증발량 증가에 따른 안개발생일수 변화가 예측됨에 따라 안개 발생과 상대습도에 대한 장기적인 모니터링이 요구된다.

Changes of Physical and Chemical Properties for Making Raw Materials and Reproductions According to Manufacturing Stages in Traditional Korean White Porcelain

  • We made a Korean white porcelain or Joseon Baekja jar and based on the raw materials used and reproductions of each stage, we aimed to compare and analyze the physicochemical changes of the raw materials such as clay at each manufacturing stage, as well as identify the characteristics and correlations. Although the basic main components of clay and glaze material are similar, their texture becomes denser in the process of bisque firing pottery (Chobeol-pyeon) and glaze firing pottery (Jaebeol-pyeon), and we confirmed that in addition to the tendency of increasing vitrification, low-temperature minerals such as mica and illite gradually disappeared, while high-temperature minerals such as cristobalite were newly created. This phenomenon has also been verified by the rapid decrease in absorption rate while the change in specific gravity was small. In addition, the color was greatly affected by the firing atmosphere, and the yellow-red chromaticity of the raw materials was higher during bisque firing but showed a rapidly decreasing characteristic during glaze firing. The value of magnetic susceptibility, which is related to iron (Fe) component, showed a tendency to decrease in glaze firing pottery. CT images were confirmed as a method that can indirectly estimate the change in the material properties of the object step-by-step for the entire object. In conclusion, the study of manufacturing stages of reproduction can provide basic data for scientific research on the estimation of porcelain and pottery making technology and changes in raw materials.

과학적 분석에 의한 은해사 괘불탱의 상태 및 재료 해석 (Scientific Study of Characteristics and Material Properties of Hanging Painting of Eunhaesa Temple)

  • 본 연구는 은해사에 소장되어 있는 보물 제1270호 은해사 괘불탱에 대한 과학적 조사와 분석을 실시하여 보존 상태, 재질 및 채색 안료 등에 대한 성격과 특징을 해석하고자 하였다. 대상의 미술사적 배경을 짚어보고 보존적 측면의 상태조사 및 안료 색상별 재료적 특성을 알기 위한 분석을 실시하였다. 그 결과 연백, 연단, 활석, 진사, 석황, 금, 녹염동광, 공작석, 회청 등의 무기안료와 먹 등의 유기염료를 사용하여 다채로운 색을 구현한 것으로 확인되었다. 바탕화면은 조선시대 불화의 재료로 흔치 않은 초(綃)를 사용한 것으로 확인되었다. 또한 백색 채색층은 여러 종류의 백색계열의 안료를 사용한 형태로 이는 괘불탱 백색 채색으로는 드문 사례라 할 수 있다.
