수분산 공액고분자 나노입자의 합성 방법론 (Methods to Formulate Waterborne Conjugated Polymer Nanoparticles)

  • 공액고분자는 유기전자소자부터 바이오메디칼 응용분야까지 다양하게 적용가능한 차세대 반도체소재이다. 하지만 낮은 수용성으로 주로 유기용매에 녹여 사용하나 최근 유기 용매의 독성과 환경 문제 이슈로 공액고분자의 수분산 나노입자화가 주목받고 있다. 본 총설에서는 나노입자가 형성되는 두 가지 원리와 이를 이용한 대표적인 공액고분자 나노입자 합성방법들 및 관련 연구들을 소개하고자 한다.

New Semiconducting Multi-branched Conjugated Molecules Bearing 3,4-Ethylene-dioxythiophene-based Thiophenyl Moieties for Organic Field Effect Transistor

  • New $\pi$-conjugated multi-branched molecules were synthesized through the Homer-Emmons reaction using alkyl-substituted, 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene-based, thiophenyl aldehydes and octaethyl benzene-l,2,4,5-tetrayltetrakis(methylene) tetraphosphonate as the core unit; these molecules have all been fully characterized. The two multi-branched conjugated molecules exhibited excellent solubility in common organic solvents and good self-film forming properties. The semiconducting properties of these multi-branched molecules were also evaluated in organic field-effect transistors (OFET). With octyltrichlorosilane (OTS) treatment of the surface of the $SiO_2$ gate insulator, two of the crystalline conjugated molecules, 7 and 8, exhibited carrier mobilities as high as $2.4({\pm}0.5){\times}10^{-3}$ and $1.3({\pm}0.5){\times}10^{-3}cm^2V^{-1}s^{-1}$, respectively. The mobility enhancement of OFET by light irradiation ($\lambda$ = 436 nm) supported the promising photo-controlled switching behavior for the drain current of the device.

유기전계효과 트랜지스터의 반도체/고분자절연체 계면에 발생하는 비가역적 전하트래핑에 관한 연구 (Irreversible Charge Trapping at the Semiconductor/Polymer Interface of Organic Field-Effect Transistors)

  • 공액분자반도체와 고분자절연체 계면에서 전하트래핑을 이해하는 것은 장시간 구동가능한 안정성 높은 유기전계효과 트랜지스터(이하 유기트랜지스터) 개발을 위해 중요하다. 본 연구에서는 다양한 분자량의 고분자절연체를 이용한 유기트랜지스터의 전하이동 특성을 평가하였다. Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) 표면 위에 적층된 펜타센 공액반도체의 모폴로지와 결정성은 PMMA 분자량에 무관함이 나타났다. 그 결과 트랜지스터 소자의 초기 트랜스퍼 곡선과 전하이동도는 분자량에 상관없었다. 하지만, 적정한 상대습도 환경에서 소자에 바이어스가 인가되었을 경우, 바이어스 스트레스 효과로 불리는 드레인전류 감소와 트랜스퍼 곡선 이동은 PMMA 분자량이 감소할수록 증대됨이 관찰되었다(분자량 효과). 분자량 효과에 의한 전하트래핑은 회복이 매우 어려운 비가역적인 과정임을 밝혀 내었다. 이러한 분자량 효과는 PMMA 존재하는 고분자사슬 말단의 밀도 변화에 의한 것으로 판단된다. 즉, PMMA 고분자사슬 말단이 가지는 자유부피가 전하트랩으로 작용하여 분자량에 민감한 바이어스 스트레스 효과를 일으킨 것으로 판단된다.

Effects of Fused Thiophene Bridges in Organic Semiconductors for Solution-Processed Small-Molecule Organic Solar Cells

  • Three push-pull organic semiconductors, TPA-$Th_3$-MMN (1), TPA-ThTT-MMN (2), and TPA-ThDTT-MMN (3), comprising a triphenylamine donor and a methylene malononitrile acceptor linked by various ${\pi}$-conjugated thiophene units were synthesized, and the effects of the ${\pi}$-conjugated bridging unit on the photovoltaic characteristics of solution-processed small-molecule organic solar cells based on these semiconductors were investigated. Planar bridging units with extended ${\pi}$-conjugation effectively facilitated intermolecular ${\pi}-{\pi}$ packing interactions in the solid state, resulting in enhanced $J_{sc}$ values of the SMOSCs fabricated with bulk heterojunction films.

Controlling Intermolecular Interactions, Optical Property, and Charge Transport in Conjugated Polyelectrolytes for Applications in Opto-electronics Devices

  • Recently there has been significant interest in utilizing functional semiconductor polymers for electronic and opto-electronic devices such as Light-emitting diodes, thin film field effect transistors, solar cells, displays, and chemical and biosensors. However, better materials and further understanding of their electronic properties are critical for devices based on these materials. In this work, we use various scanning probe techniques, spectroscopy, and device fabrication to study the molecular interactions, optical and charge transport properties in conjugated polyelectrolytes. Using chemical synthesis approach, we are able to tune the molecular packing and interactions in these materials, which in turn, influence their electronic properties and device performance.

  • Conjugated oligomers have been already used as active layers in field effect transistors, photodiodes and electroluminescent devices. Particularly thiophene oligomers such $\alpha$ -sexithiophene($\alpha$-6T) attract great interest for its prospective app1ications in large-area flexible displays. In this study, we investigated the contact properties between the organic semiconductor $\alpha$-6T and metals such as Au(Gold), Ag(Silver), Cr(Chromium), Al(Aluminum), Cr(Chromium). Using the Transmission Line Model(TLM) method, specific contact resistances of the metal lines in contact with the $\alpha$-6T were determined. From the current-voltage characteristics, electrical conductivity of the $\alpha$-6T films is found.

Impedance Spectroscopy of ${\pi}$-Conjugated Organic Materials

  • AC electrical properties of organic light-emitting diodes with poly(2-methoxy-5-(2'-ethyl-hexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene) (MEH-PPV), poly[2,5-bia(dimethyloctylsilyl)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] (BDMOS-PPV), and tris-(8-hydroxyquinolate)-aluminum $(AlQ_3)$ as light-emitting materials are studied. The frequency-dependent real and imaginary parts of impedance were fitted using an equivalent circuit. We found that the conduction mechanism is a space-charge limited current with exponential trap distribution.

Electronic structure of potassium-doped copper phthalocyanine studied by photoemission spectroscopy and density functional calculations

  • The metal intercalation to an organic semiconductor is of importance since the charge transfer between a metal and an organic semiconductor can induce the highly enhanced conductivity for achieving efficient organic electronic devices. In this regard, the changes of the electronic structure of copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) caused by the intercalation of potassium are studied by ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy (UPS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Potassium intercalation leads to the appearance of an intercalation-induced peak between the highest molecular occupied orbital (HOMO) and the lowest molecular unoccupied orbital (LUMO) in the valence-band spectra obtained using UPS. The DFT calculations show that the new gap state is attributed to filling the LUMO+1, unlike a common belief of filling the LUMO. However, the LUMO+1 is not conductive because the ${\pi}$-conjugated macrocyclic isoindole rings on the molecule do not make a contribution to the LUMO+1. This is the origin of a metal-insulator transition through heavily potassium doped CuPc.

  • Conducting polymers have band structures similar to those of inorganic semiconductors such as silicon. Several electronic devices have been constructed with conjugated polymers, mainly Schottky diodes and Metal-Insulator-Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistors (MISFET's). Organic semiconductor has been reported as active materials in MISFET's.$^{1.4}$ In our laboratory, $\alpha$-Sexithiencyl ($\alpha$-6T) has been synthesized and purified by sublimation method. In this study, thin films of $\alpha$-Sexithienyl were prepared on various substrates in ultra-high vacuum chamber by vacuum evaporation method, so called OMBD(Organic Molocular Beam Deposition).$^{7.9}$ The $\alpha$-Sexithienyl thin films were deposited with various deposition conditions. The crystalline structure, and molecular orientation of these films have being studied by using UV/Vis. spectroscopy and X-Ray Diffractometry.
