This paper presents a boundary element application to determine the optimal impressed current densities at defect position on the pipe line. In this protection paint, enough current must be impressed to lower the potential distribution on the metal surface to the critical values. The optimal impressed current densities are determined in order to minimize the power supply for protection. This inverse problem was formulated by employing the boundary element method. Since the system of linear equations obtained was ill-conditioned, including singular value decomposition, conjugate gradient method were applied and the accuracies of these estimation. Several numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the practical applicability of the proposed method.
This paper presents the simultaneous optimal design of structure and LQG control systems for the improvement of riding comforts of active vehicle suspension systems. The performance index of riding comforts is extended to include frequency-weighted acceleration in the quadratic cost functional. Janeway human response curve with respect to acceleration is used to verify the usefulness of the presented method. The method is applied to a half model of an active vehicle suspension systems with elastic body moving on randomly profiled road. The values of stiffness of suspensions are used for the structural design variables. The conjugate gradient method is used for optimization. The simulated results of simultaneous optimization with frequency-weighted cost functional are compared with those without frequency- weighted cost functional.
Recently, the problem associated with the achievement of desired trajectories for non-linear robotic manipulatory systems are researched. The control system which is designed for this robot manipulator, poses a number of severe problem. The methods proposed to deal with the problem fall loosely into three main classes : "direct" "adaptive", "anthropomorphic". Besides there is an approach which is described based upon the application of optimal control theory. In this paper, using the optimal theory, we choose error-coordinate, between the desired trajectories and the practical as the state values, and determine the control law U which minimize a corresponding performance criterion. Let's consider the robotic arm proposed by Freund and set up the deviations of it's trajectory as a measure of performance. To find the optimal control law $U^*$ and the next state value which need to obtain $U^*$ here, we should introduced the conjugate gradient algorithm and the Runge Kutta method.
For seismic imaging and inversion, the inverted image depends on how we define the objective function. ${\ell}^1$-norm is more robust than ${\ell}^2$-norm. However, it is difficult to apply the Newton-type algorithm directly because the partial derivative for ${\ell^1$-norm has a singularity. In our paper, to overcome the difficulties of singularities, Huber function given by hybrid ${\ell}^1/{\ell}^2$-norm is used. We tested the robustness of our new object function with several noisy data set. Numerical results show that the new objective function is more robust to band limited spiky noise than the conventional object function.
In this paper, we present an efficient way to determine a suitable value of the regularization parameter using the global generalized cross validation and analyze the experimental results from preconditioned global conjugate gradient linear least squares(Gl-CGLS) method in solving image deblurring problems. Preconditioned Gl-CGLS solves general linear systems with multiple right-hand sides. It has been shown in [10] that this method can be effectively applied to image deblurring problems. The regularization parameter, chosen from the global generalized cross validation, with preconditioned Gl-CGLS method can give better reconstructions of the true image than other parameters considered in this study.

The computational environment in which engineers perform their designs has been rapidly evolved from coarse serial machines to massively parallel machines. Although the recent development of high-performance computers are available for a number of years, only limited successful applications of the new computational environments in computational structural engineering field has been reported due to its limited availability and large cost associated with high-performance computing. As a new computational model for high-performance engineering computing without cost and availability problems, parallel structural analysis models for large scale structures on a network of personal computers (PCs) are presented in this paper. In structural analysis solving routine for the linear system of equations is the most time consuming part. Thus, the focus is on the development of efficient preconditioned conjugate gradient (PCG) solvers on the proposed computational model. Two parallel PCG solvers, PPCG-I and PPCG-II, are developed and applied to analysis of large scale space truss structures.

A tomography algorithm to maximize the entropy of image using Lagrangian multiplier technique and conjugate gradient method has been designed for the measurement of 2D spatial distribution of intense neutral beams of KSTAR NBI(Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research Neutral Beam Injector) which is now being designed. A possible detection system was assumed and a numerical simulation has been implemented to test the reconstruction quality of given beam profiles. This algorithm has the good applicability for sparse projection data and thus, can be used for the neutral beam tomography.
The objective of a cathodic protection system (CP) is to protect the buried metallic structure against the corrosion caused by chemical reaction between the buried structure and the surrounding medium, such as soil. This paper presents a boundary element application to determine the optimal impressed current densities in a cathodic protection system. The potential within the electrolyte is described by the Laplace's equation with nonlinear boundary conditions which are enforced based on experimentally determined electrochemical polarization curves. The optimal impressed current densities are determined in order to minimize the power supply for protection. The solution is obtained by using the conjugate gradient method in which the governing equations and the protecting conditions are taken into account by the penalty function method. Numerical example are presented to demonstrate the practical applicability of the proposed method.
In the present study, a parallel Taylor-Galerkin/level set based two-phase flow code was developed using finite element discretization and domain decomposition method based on MPI (Message Passing Interface). The proposed method can be utilized for the analysis of a large scale free surface problem in a complex geometry due to the feature of FEM and domain decomposition method. Four-step fractional step method was used for the solution of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations and Taylor-Galerkin method was adopted for the discretization of hyperbolic type redistancing and advection equations. A Parallel ILU(0) type preconditioner was chosen to accelerate the convergence of a conjugate gradient type iterative solvers. From the present parallel numerical experiments, it has been shown that the proposed method is applicable to the simulation of large scale free surface flows.
