Alkali-soluble extracts were prepared from barks of Japanese larch(Larix leptolepis). Siberian larch(Larix gmelineii) and Radiata pine(Pinus radiata) The effect of various factors, such as particle size, liquor ratio, extraction temperature, and reaction time, on the extracts yield was investigated. Particle sizes affected the alkali-soluble extracts; the finer the particle size, the higher extracts and extract efficiency. High temperature and high liquor ratio were more effective. In the range of 0.25% to 1% NaOH concentration, alkali extracts were increased with the increasing alkali concentration. However, extract yields were leveled off above 0.5% alkali concentration. Extractions with NaHCO3 were almost equivalent to those of NaOH extraction. 1% NaOH and 1% NaHCO3 resulted in the highest yields of alkaline extracts. Extracts from Japanese larch were lower than those from Siberian larch and Radiata pine barks. Siberian larch bark was the best raw material for tannin adhesives, because its extractive yield was higher than those of the other barks. Concerning pH of alkaline media during extraction, small increases of the extract yields were resulted at range of pH 7 to pH 9, while a large increases from pH 9.0 to pH 12. This phenomenon is attributed to higher alkalinity.
In order to inspect the danger of forest fires, the thermal characteristics and the ignitability of the dead leaves and the living leaves for the main species of trees in Youngdong areas have been studied by the TG/DTA and the group flammability tester. From this work, the thermal delay has been increased with the increase of the heating rate. The fractions of the thermal weight loss for the dead leaves and the living leaves of the coniferous trees were higher than those of the broadleaf trees. Also, it was confirmed that the ignitable dangers of the dead leaves and the coniferous trees were higher than those of the living leaves and the broadleaf trees, due to the low auto ignition temperature and thermal resistance.
Seasonal and spatial variations in propagule numbers of Trichoderma species were investigated every other month for one year in deciduous and coniferous forest soils and evaluated the relationships of Trichoderma spp. populations to soil environmental factors. The total population of Trichoderma spp. increased until summer and then declined until winter. The yearly mean frequency of Trichoderma spp. exceeded 1.4% of total fungal propagules in two sites. Decreases of absolute an relative propagule numbers of Trichoderma spp. with increasing soil depth were found and variation in Trichoderma spp. propagules caused by differences in soil depth ($0{\sim}50cm$) was greater than that caused by differences in sampling time. The most common species occurring in two sites was T. viride, followed by T. polysporum, T. koningii, and T. hamatum. Individual species of Trichoderma showed diferent abundance trend in accordance with sampling time. T. viride was dorminant from spring to autumn, while T. polysporum dominated over the other speicies in winter. Variations in propagule number of Trichoderma sppp. were principally mediated by the actions of biotic environmental factors rather than by the direct effects of abiotic factors. In multiple-regression analyses, 48% of the total vaiation in Trichoderma spp. propagules in deciduous site could be accounted for by total fungal propagules and soil CMCase actvity. In coniferous site, 65% of total variation could be accounted for by total fungal and bacterial propagules, moisture content and organic carbon content.
Phytoncide, which is emitted from plant against the insect species and bacterium, has been known as a health builder for human. Monoterpenes are major components of phytoncide. This study was conducted to investigate the distribution characteristics of phytoncide(monoterpene) depending on main species of tree, season, and meteorological factors in the 5 recreation forests, Chungbuk area. From the result of the study. it was shown that the annual concentrations of monoterpene are ranged in 236.0pptv - 698.3pptv depending on main species of tree. The variation of seasonal concentration was summer > spring > fall. The monoterpene concentration of coniferous forest was founded to be higher than broad leaved forest. In general, concentration of major components is ${\alpha}$-pinene > ${\beta}$-pinene > camphene > d-limonene. The concentration of terpene was founded to be greatly influenced by the meteological factors such as insolation and temperature.
The vegetation activity of the Korean peninsula has been monitored temporal variations through a satellite remote sensing and the vegetation index was used to set up the vegetation data map of Korea. The AVHRR data sent by the NOAA-14 satellite was collected for 8 months between April and November, 1997 to calculate the normalized difference vegetation index(NDVI) which was combined the MVC(Maximum Value Composite). Then this NDVI composite map was prepared to review the temporal variations in the vegetation activity. The NDVI has been subject to the unsupervised classification for the growing season between May and October. And the vegetation type is divided into five classes ; urban, bare soil, grass, farming land, deciduous forest and coniferous forest. The unsupervised classificaion of vegetation distribution in the Korean Peninsula shows that the urban and bare soil take 4.14% of total national area, grass 4.49%, farming land 27.54%, deciduous forest 25.61% and coniferous forest 38.22%.
This study was conducted to examine the community structure of ground beetles between coniferous- and deciduous-dominant forest in agricultural landscapes, in Miryang-si, Yeongdong-gun, Icheon-si, and Cheolwon-gun during April to October in 2009. A total of 19 species belonging to 15 genera of 9 subfamilies were identified from 6,253 collected ground beetles. Dominant species from 4 regions were Synuchus nitidus (3,715 individuals, 59.4% of total) and Synuchus cyloderus (1,783 individuals, 28.5%) respectively. Non-metric multidimensional scaling based on Bray-Curtis similarity showed that ground beetle assemblage was not different between forest stands, but it was significantly different among regions. Overall, forest stands of secondary forests may not show a different community structure of ground beetle assemblages in our study. However, monitoring on the ground beetle fauna as well as other arthropods of secondary forests in agricultural landscapes is still important for the management and conservation of biodiversity, because forests provides important habitats for many predatory arthropods, such as ground beetles, spiders and rove beetles.
This study was carried out to investigate by the MGP analysis the composition of oribatid mite in coniferous and broad-leaved forests, Kwang Yng experiment plantation, Chola Nam Do Province, southern part of Korea. In these study area, 157 species of oribatid mites (Acari: Cryptogimata) were identified. Among them 6 species such as; Brachychochthonius jugatus JACOT, B hungaricus BALOGH, Eremulus translamealtus BALOGH et. MAHUNKA, Brachioppiella ctenifera GOLOSOVA, Striatoppia opuntiseta BALOGH et. MAHUNKA, Suctobelba perdentata baculifer BALOGH et. MAHUNKA have not been described in Korea. Species compositions were as follows; Among them 69 species were found in all the six sampling sites, 33 species scattered sporadically in all the area, 12 species found in coniferous forest, 10 species in broad-leaved forest only, and 33 species sampled at one site. According to the MGP analysis I, site B-1, B-2, and B-3 were found to be "Type G" and site C-1, C-2, and C-3 were "Type MG". According to the MGP analysis II, site B were found to be all "Type G". But site C-1 was "Type MG", C-2 was "Type M" and C-3 was "Type G" suggesting that "Group M" increased in the site C.e G" suggesting that "Group M" increased in the site C. in the site C.
The calorific value is the most significant factor in woody biomass utilization. We measured the calorific value by the wood parts (debarked parts and bark) and moisture content for 3 major tree species (Larix kaempferi, Pinus koraiensis, and Pinus rigida). Results showed that the calorific value decreased exponentially as the moisture content increased regardless of tree species and the wood parts. The bark had higher calorific values than woody parts (de-barked parts). In addition, Pinus koraiensis had the highest calorific values among 3 study species.
This study was carried out to analyze annual diameter growth characteristics for major 11 tree species using the data for Gangwon province of the National Forest Resources Inventory in 2007. The annual diameter growth of coniferous species was 5.02 mm, 4.70 mm, and 3.90 mm in Korean white pine, Japanese larch, and Korean red pine, respectively. In growths of the deciduous trees, dogwood, basswood, and cork oak had 3.55 mm, 3.48 mm and 3.01 mm, respectively. Average of the annual diameter growths for all species was 3.38 mm. The relationship between diameter growth and age class showed that the growth rate decreased for all species as age increased. The age class II had the highest annual diameter rate. In relation of the stand density(trees per hectare) and diameter growth, the diameter growth tended to decrease as the stand density increased for most species, especially Korean white pine, cork oak, and basswood. Finally age had the highest value in the correlation coefficients between measurement factor and growth rate regardless of species.
Background: The growing wild boar population has become a social issue and its feeding characteristics could affect the physical condition and the plant species composition in the South Korean forests. We aimed to reveal the preference of the wild boar on forest type and site condition as feeding grounds in two cool-temperate forested national parks, Odaesan and Seoraksan, in order to provide information to manage the growing population. Results: The 75 plots (53.6%) out of 140 plots were used as feeding grounds by the wild boar, implying a considerably large population. Especially, the observation frequency as feeding ground was the highest in Quercus forests (73.3%), and it was significantly more preferred than deciduous forest type (44.2%) and coniferous forest type (32.4%) (${\chi}^2=17.591$, p < 0.001). Significantly more and deeper pits were found in Quercus forests. Moreover, high elevation and gentle slope ridge were relatively preferred regardless of forest distribution. Conclusions: South Korean forests are growing qualitatively and quantitatively. Particularly, Quercus forest area has increased markedly, while coniferous forest area has decreased. Since the Quercus forest provides rich food sources for the wild boar, the enlargement of this forest type is expected to increase the wild boar population. The forests located at high elevations have high species diversity, and it is expected that these forests will be greatly affected by the increase in the wild boar population as preferred feeding grounds.
