  • This research aimed at developing a technique for estimating the tree height using BRF (Bi-directional Reflectance Factor) through the clarification of the relation between shape of the tree crown and the tree height and the relations between the shape of the tree crown and BRF. This paper, reports the results of analyses of data acquired by field measurements done to clarify relation between crown shape and tree height.

  • This study was carried out to find the relationship between anatomical characters and compression strength parallel to grain of Pinus densiflora S. et. Z., the representative conifer species in Korea. The results were as follows ; 1. The compression strength parallel to grain increased with the increase of tracheid length and wall thickness. The strength, however, decreased with the increase of height of uniseriate ray and microfibril angle. 2. The major factors affecting compression strength parallel to grain in heartwood were radial diameter of latewood tracheid and wall thickness of earlywood tracheid but length and tangential diameter of latewood tracheid were the important factors in sapwood.

  • The needled leaves of three conifer species were collected in Mt. Taehwa during different seasons of the year. Total 59 isolates and 19 species of endophytic fungi were isolated from the leaves and identified using morphological and molecular characteristics. As a result, Shannon index was different in its host plant; Larix kaempferi had a highest value of species diversity. According to the sampling season, 9 species of 19 species were isolated during fall season. The results suggest that the existing of host plant and sampling season are major factors of distribution of endophytic fungi.

  • Pollen analysis to clear vegetational history of korea was carried out on the deposite taken from the pit of the miruksa site, south-western korea(36o00'18'N, 127o1'12'E, 10m in alt.). This area has been known as the cool temperate zone(southern zone) according to yim and kira(1975). But, now we can not found the original vegetation because the area has been disturbed severely and almost area changed to cultivated land.the area is one of the most developd area in early agricultural stage of korea. By the pollen diagram, three local pollen zones are distinguished in this site, bottom to surface, as following. is-Ⅰ :pinus-quercus zone (140∼120 cm, sample 1 and 2) is-Ⅱ :ulmus+zelkova zone(120∼84 cm, sample 3∼6) is-Ⅲ :pinus zone(84∼0 cm, sample 7 ∼13) is-Ⅰ is characterized by high values in frequences of pinus, the temperate conifer and quercus the cool temperate oak, and is-Ⅱ zone by the decrease of quercus and increase of ulmus and increase of ulman+zelkova as ravine forest elements, isⅢ zone is characterized by pinus, especially, based on data of sample no.9.

  • Emission rate of monoterpene and isoprene was measured in five commonly growing tree species of conifers(Pinus thunbergii, Abies koreana, Cryptomeria japonica, Pinus densiflora, Chamaecyparis obtusa) at the Halla mountain sites. Dynamic flow enclosure technique was used and gas samples were collected into Tenax tube. The highest and lowest hourly emission rate was observed in Abies koreana (1.86 ${\mu}g$/gdw/hr) and Chamaecyparis obtusa (0.52 ${\mu}g$/gdw/hr), respectively. The major species of monoterpene from pine trees were ${\alpha}$-pinene, ${\beta}$-pinene, ${\beta}$-phellandrene, myrcene. Particularly, d-limonene was abundant in Abies koreana but ${\alpha}$-pinene, $d^3$-carene and sabinene was in Cryptomeria japonica. Emission rates of isoprene show less significant than those of monoterpene. And also seasonal emission rates of monoterpene were dependent on environmental factors such as temperature.

  • The study was emphasized on the applicability of Landsat data for vegetation classification of touch as small natural swamp areas Yujeon natural swamp in Haman-gun through image processing system. The image processing technique which was applied is maximum likelihood method. The classified types on the Landsat image are water, nelumbo, grass, agricultural field and conifer. The computer processed classification was compared the existed data for evaluating the result, but there are some difficulties on the exact comparison between them because of discordance of the temporal resolution. The result, anyhow, is quite remarkable that Landsat MSS data can be used for the quantitative estimates of vegetation type classification in such small area.

  • We found an unrecorded endophytic fungus, Dermea piceina J.W. Groves, isolated from alpine conifer Abies koreana. Until now only one Dermea species, D. cerasi, has been reported in Korea. In this study, we compared morphological characteristics and DNA sequences, including internal transcribed spacer and 28S ribosomal DNA, of D. piceina isolated from A. koreana with those of related species. Here, we present morphological and molecular characters of this fungus for the first time in Korea.

  • In this present study, the corrosion mitigation effect of conifer cone extract (CC) was examined in the cement mortar to improve the steel rebar (SR) corrosion resistance. The corrosion inhibition properties of the SR embedded in cement mortar (CM) admixed with different percentage (0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 %) of CC was studied by open circuit potential (OCP) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) tests. This result confirms that the CM with 0.5% of CC added has better corrosion resistance than the blank specimen (0 % of CC). Although, the percentage of CC increase above 0.5%, the CC could yield a negative impact on CM properties in terms of reducing the corrosion resistance due to the reduction of cement hydration reaction. It was highlighted that the SR embedded in CM containing 0.5% of CC had increased corrosion resistance.

  • The objectives of this study were to examine the amount of nutrient input by throughfall and stemflow, and the nutrient dynamics by throughfall, stemflow and soil solution among Piuns koraiensis, Larix leptolepis and hardwood forests including oaks at Kwangju-Gun, Kyonggi-Do. A total amount of rainfall during the study period was 1410.1mm. Of the total rainfall, 85% was from throughfall at the L. leptolepis stand, 84.5% at the thinned P. koraiensis stand, 83.2% at the unthinned P. koraiensu stand and 81.2% at the hardwood stand, showing greater throughfall at the conifer stand than at the hardwood stand. Stemflow showed 2.7% of rainfall at the hardwood stand, 1.3% at the unthinned P. koraiensis stand, 1.2% at the thinned P. koraiensis stand and 0.8% at the L. leptolepis stand, showing greater stemflow at the hardwood stand than at the conifer stand. Ion concentration of stemflow was greater than those of rainfall and throughfall. The conifer stand showed higher ion concentration than the hardwood stand both for cation and anion. The ion concentrations of throughfall and stemflow were higher in the descending order : $NH{_4}^+$-N > $K^+$ > $K^+$ > $Na^+$ > $Mg^{2+}$ for cations and $SO{_4}^{2-}$ > $NO{_3}^-$-N > $Cl^-$-N for anions. After the precipitation passed through the canopy, $K^+$ increased most at the hardwood stand, whereas $NH{_4}^+$-N did most at the P. koraiensis and L. leptolepis stands. The ion concentration of soil solution was higher in the descending order : $Ca^{2+}$ > $Mg^{2+}$ > $Na^+$ for cations and $NO{_3}^-$-N > $Cl^-$ > $SO{_4}^{2-}$ for anions. $NH{_4}^+$-N and $K^+$ seemed to be supplied primarily from atmospheric deposition while $Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$ and $Na^+$ from weathering.
