  • Conductive polymer composites (CPCs) consist of a polymeric matrix and a conductive filler, for example, carbon black, carbon fibers, graphite or carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The critical amount of the electrically conductive filler necessary to build up a continuous conductive network, and accordingly, to make the material conductive; is referred to as the percolation threshold. From technical and economical viewpoints, it is desirable to decrease the conductive-filler percolation-threshold as much as possible. In this study, we investigated the effect of polymer/conductive-filler interactions, as well as the processing and morphological development of low-percolation-threshold (${\Phi}c$) conductive-polymer composites. The aim of the study was to produce conductive composites containing less multi-walled CNTs (MWCNTs) than required for pure polypropylene (PP) through two approaches: one using various mixing methods and the other using immiscible polymer blends. Variants of the conductive PP composite filled with MWCNT was prepared by dry mixing, melt mixing, mechanofusion, and compression molding. The percolation threshold (${\Phi}c$) of the MWCNT-PP composites was most successfully lowered using the mechanofusion process than with any other mixing method (2-5 wt%). The mechanofusion process was found to enhance formation of a percolation network structure, and to ensure a more uniform state of dispersion in the CPCs. The immiscible-polymer blends were prepared by melt mixing (internal mixer) poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF, PP/PVDF, volume ratio 1:1) filled with MWCNT.

  • Encapsulation is required since organic materials used in OLED devices are fragile to water vapor and oxygen. Laser sealing method is currently used where IR laser is scanned along the glass-frit coated lines. Laser method is, however, not suitable to encapsulating large-sized glass substrate due to the nature of sequential scanning. In this work we propose a new method of encapsulation using Joule heating. Conductive layer is patterned along the sealing lines on which the glass frit is screen printed and sintered. Electric field is then applied to the conductive layer resulting in bonding both the panel glass and the encapsulation glass by melting glass-frit. In order to obtain uniform bonding the temperature of a conductive layer having a shape of closed loop should be uniform. In this work we conducted simulation for heat distribution according to the structure of a conductive layer used as a Joule-heat source. Uniform temperature was obtained with an error of 5% by optimizing the structure of a conductive layer. Based on the results of thermal simulations we concluded that Joule-heating induced encapsulation would be a good candidate for encapsulation method especially for large area glass substrate.

  • The development of next generation displays such as flexible display is a major challenge. Most materials and processes in current flat panel display industry cannot be transferred to flexible substrates. Typically, indium tin oxide (ITO) thin films are brittle and need to be deposited at high temperature to achieve an optimal opto-electrical property, therefore ITO films cannot be used as a flexible electrode. Up to date, many alternative materials to ITO have been proposed such as conductive polymers, nanometals, solution deposited transparent conductive oxide(TCO) and carbon nanotubes(CNTs). CNT based transparent conductive films are fabricated on glass and polymer substrates. CNT thin films exhibit a sheet resistance ($R_s$) of nearby $10^3\;{\Omega}/sq$ with a transmittance of around 80% on the visible light range, which is attributed by excellent dispersion and interaction among CNTs, solvents and polymeric binders. This talk will present the current studies, opto-electrical properties, design criteria and its applications for CNT-based transparent conductive films.

  • Micro-conductive patterns were microfabricated on an insulating substrate ($SiO_2$) surface by a selective electroless nickel plating process in order to investigate the formation of seed layers. To fabricate micro-conductive patterns, a thin layer of metal (Cu.Cr) was deposited in the desired micropattern using laser-induced forward transfer (LIFT). and above this layer, a second layer was plated by selective electroless plating. The LIFT process. which was carried out in multi-scan mode, was used to fabricate micro-conductive patterns via electroless nickel plating. This method helps to improve the deposition process for forming seed patterns on the insulating substrate surface and the electrical conductivity of the resulting patterns. This study analyzes the effect of seed pattern formation by LIFT and key parameters in electroless nickel plating during micro-conductive pattern fabrication. The effects of the process variables on the cross-sectional shape and surface quality of the deposited patterns are examined using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and an optical microscope.

  • Recently, studies on the development of flexible electronic devices by combining flexible materials and a conductor have been actively performed as interest in wearable devices. Especially, carbon nanotubes (CNT) or graphene coating have been used to construct a circuit to induce improvement in flexibility and rigidity. Various technologies have been developed in the surface coating of conductive materials, which are key to the manufacture of flexible electronic devices. Surface coating products with 3D coating and micro-patterns have been proposed through electrospinning, electrification, and 3D printing technologies. As a result of this advanced surface coating technology, there is a growing interest in manufacturing gradient conductive surfaces. Gradient surfaces have the advantage that they are adapted to apply a gentle change or to inspect optimum conditions in a particular region by imparting continuously changing properties. In this study, we propose a manufacturing technique to produce a continuous gradient conductive surface by combining a partial stretching of elastomer and a conductive material coating, and introduce experimental results to confirm its performance.

  • This study is carried out to develop the new process for the fabrication of ultra-fine electrodes on the flexible substrates using superhydrophobic effect. A facile method was developed to form the ultra-fine trenches on the flexible substrates treated by plasma etching and to print the fine metal electrodes using conductive nano-ink. Various plasma etching conditions were investigated for the hydrophobic surface treatment of flexible polyimide (PI) films. The micro-trench on the hydrophobic PI film fabricated under optimized conditions was obtained by mechanical scratching, which gave the hydrophilic property only to the trench area. Finally, the patterning by selective deposition of ink materials was performed using the conductive silver nano-ink. The interface between the conductive nanoparticles and the flexible substrates were characterized by scanning electron microscope. The increase of the sintering temperature and metal concentration of ink caused the reduction of electrical resistance. The sintering temperature lower than $200^{\circ}C$ resulted in good interfacial bonding between Ag electrode and PI film substrate.

  • Recently, new types of wearable devices such as textile electronics are considered as the next generation wearable electronics. To realize the textile electronics, conductive fibers are required to supply the power and for signal processing. Conventionally, silver nanowires (Ag NWs) have been attracted as one of the conductive additives in the fibers, however, using the Ag NWs may lead to high production cost since it is a noble metal. Many researches have been done to replace the Ag NWs into a cheaper materials such as copper nanowires (Cu NWs). Here, we synthesized ultra-long Cu NWs for a conductive filler material in conductive fibers, taking advantages of their structural features. To investigate the effect of capping agents on the aspect ratio of the synthesized Cu NWs, we used various capping agents such as hexadecylamine, butylamine, ethylenedilamine and oleylamine in the Cu NW synthesis. In this research, the effects of capping agents on the structure and the synthesis of Cu NWs are presented.
