  • The presence of voids under pavements or behind tunnel linings results in their deterioration. To detect these voids effectively by non-destructive tests, a method using radar was proposed. In this research, not only the detection of shape of voids, but also the location of reinforcing bars by radar image analysis is investigated. The experiments and image processing were conducted to detect voids and to locate reinforcing bars in or under concrete pavements (or tunnel linings) with reinforcing bars. From the results, the fundamental algorithm for tracing the reinforcing bars and voids, improving the horizontal resolution of the object image and detecting shape of objects, was verified.

  • Wind tunnel tests and analyses of the response of the concrete pylon for the Seo Han Grand Bridge were conducted using aeroelastic model technique. A 1/250 scale aeroelastic model was used to measure the responses of the pylon at the several critical locations and to find any possible vibrational behavior. In order to confirm the model design and fabrication, natural frequencies and mode shapes measured from the model were compared with those from the calculation. Tests were conducted under the various angles ranging from $0^{\circ}$ to $90^{\circ}$ to find the critical angle of the wind. In order to evaluate the sensitivity of the response to changes in structural damping, a series of tests were conducted with two different values of structural damping such as 0.2% and 1.0% of critical. Additional tests were also conducted considering construction sequence.

  • Steel FibreReinforced Shotcrete(SFRS) is one of the main tunnel support along with the rock bolt during the excavation and after the completion of the tunnel. In the standard qualification of the SFRS defined by Korea Highway Corporation, 28 day core specimen has to meet the compressive strength of 19.6 MPa and over 90 % fibre contents. Furthermore, for the 28 days brick shaped specimen made by shooting, flexural strength should be over 4.4 MPa and flexural toughness ratio which can be calculated from flexural toughness factor has to meet more than 68% of flexural strength. In shotcrete, accelerating agent is added for the rapid strength development. Silicate and aluminate type agents are known to develop shotcrete strength rapidly, however, has such problem to degrade the middle and long term strength. Hence, using poly carboxylic super plasticizer, it was aimed to enhance the quality of the shotcrete with the lower water-cement ratio and the same level of workability. The present paper shows the part of the field test result and its analysis.

  • Safety concern is one of the most important parameters in the design of explosive building demolition. Laboratory experiments were performed to investigate the failure behaviour of concrete columns and the effects of protection materials. Fourteen reinforced columns with two sizes were constructed and the effects of protection materials were tested for two kinds of materials: non woven fabrics and wire net. The results showed that control of gas effects is a key to the control of flying chips. It was recommended to use both wire net and non woven fabrics as primary and secondary protection materials. Such protection method was successfully applied to the explosive demolition of 16 and 17-strory apartment buildings.and the results of a simulation on a model tunneling workings using diesel equipments are introduced. In case of typical model of tunneling face, the gas concentration of human height is about one third of roof concentration and right side half of the tunnel shows better environment than left half. NOx concentration of workings can be estimated about 0.45ppm which is much lower than permissible level(5 ppm).

  • In NATM tunnel, the Ground-Lining Interaction model(GLI model) had been proposed a one of the numerical analysis as the ground load estimation method of the concrete lining. But this model was not applied with the interface mechanism between the ground and the support member or concrete lining. Therefor in this study, it is implemented as a model for closer than actual states that the interface element applied to the existing GLI model. And the modified GLI formula is proposed with the ground load estimation that is from the numerical results for each ground and rock cover conditions. Based on the numerical results, the ground load acting on concrete lining is reduced to ave. 88~106% in case of IV ground condition and ave. 47~57% in case of weathered soil condition comparing with the existing GLI model. It can be anticipated that the results obtained from this study can be applied to an estimation of the ground load on the concrete lining modeled like as real states, consistent and economical design.

  • Concrete lining in tunnel construction is used as secondary support for downward loads when primary support decays. The use of concrete lining varies greatly depending on the intentions of engineer and/or client. An engineer uses much smaller deformation modulus which determines the concrete lining thickness than of a pattern 3, when supporting patterns 4 and 5 are used in a weathered rock and soil. Considering these conditions, this study intends to suggest optimal construction procedures through a back analysis using a computer program(MIDAS-civil). Cases of Seoul Subway System line${\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}$ zone${\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}$ were selected to be examined for this study. The results show that it is possible to reduce the thickness of concrete lining. When results from this study were applied to Seoul Metropolitan subway construction projects, it is expected to bring economic benefits.

  • In this study, the existing methods proposed to estimate the relaxed load due to a tunnel excavation are compared and analyzed. Also a new approach, by which the stress relaxed zone around an excavated tunnel periphery can be systematically estimated, was suggested for the design of 2-arch tunnel lining. To this end, local factors of safety are calculated from the redistributed stresses after the excavation of a tunnel. The height of the relaxed load is inferred based on the assumption that the stress relaxed zone might coincide with the region corresponding to the local safety factor of 2.0 or 3.0. The new approach proposed in this study has the advantage of estimating the height of the relaxed load independent of the shape of a tunnel and the ground conditions, Since the height of the relaxed load is estimated according to the local factor of safety, which is a relatively clear criterion, the designer's subjectivity involved in the design of concrete tunnel lining might be reduced.

  • To determine the seismic applicability of a long-span railway concrete upper-deck arch bridge with concrete-filled steel-tube (CFST) rigid skeleton ribs, some fundamental principles and seismic approaches for long-span bridges are investigated to update the design methods in the current Code for Seismic Design of Railway Engineering of China. Ductile and mixed isolation design are investigated respectively to compare the structural seismic performances. The flexural moment and plastic rotation demands and capacities are quantified to assess the seismic status of the ductile components. A kind of triple friction pendulum (TFP) system and lead-plug rubber bearing are applied simultaneously to regularize the structural seismic demands. The numerical analysis shows that the current ductile layout with continuous rigid frame approaching spans should be strengthened to satisfy the demands of rare earthquakes. However, the mixed isolation design embodies excellent seismic performances for the continuous girder approaching span of this railway arch bridge.
